Dr. Folker is very talkative, funny, and friendly. However, if you are considering to get contact lenses, he's not your optometrist. He's geared more towards prescribing and selling glasses. He'll lean you towards his products and I have no problem with that since that's the business he's in. I do feel that he leaned me a little too hard towards glasses more so as contact lenses are not as much of a money maker for him from my benefits allowance standpoint. He's friendly when he's marketing his products and doesn't come off as a hard sell, but I think there is a bit of ulterior motive (not necessarily deceitful) from him to scoot you towards glasses. So much so that he will transition you from the exam room to his showroom seamlessly. :) One extra tip. Have them contact the insurance for a pre-estimate of your exam and glasses/prescription(s) before you commit so you won't get sticker shock. All too often, we skip this step only to find out at checkout that our out-of-pocket is way more than we expected. By the time he adds in all the different coatings for your prescription, to try to max out your benefits allowance, you might not realize that you've gone way over your covered benefits. Don't assume they know what the final cost will be since they don't often check ahead and as a result you will get stuck with the difference. Suggestion to the practice, if you're reading this. Be transparent about the cost of things and how much is actually covered UP FRONT so your clients can make an informed decision. Even if you don't know the cost at the time, offer to make an inquiry with the insurance before providing the clients with a quote. This due diligence, honesty and integrity will net you many more return clients. I'm sorry to say that I won't be one of them. read more

Two members of our family - 1 adult and 1 child - have seen Dr. Folkers in 2024 and unfortunately here was our experience. Dr. Folkers: - Rushes patients - Talks the whole time. He's funny! But he - Does NOT listen to the patient! (e.g. we said twice at the beginning of the visit what kind of frames we are interested in, but he proceeds to have us try on many others and NONE of the kind we said we were interested in) - Pushes glasses/contact sales (I have been getting glasses for 30 years and never done the whole order orally, with nothing to sign or confirm for "add-ons" such as photochromic or anti-reflective, etc.) - Puts holds on your insurance for glasses/contacts without your consent (so you cannot shop around since no one else can quote you with the hold on your insurance claim) - Uses your insurance without your explicit knowledge (again, no paperwork saying you approve of said glasses/contacts to be ordered through him - he just does it automatically after your eye exam without you realizing, since you never signed anything) - Gives overt guilt trips about "how much time" he has insisted on spending with you... while he was the one talking the whole time, and giving you things you didn't ask for! - Does not check your vision for satisfaction upon receipt of new glasses (he literally pulled the glasses off my son's head - twice! - while I had put them back on to ask our son to read something across the room) - Does not return emails (although his wife says email him b/c she doesn't know) - Delays putting in his patients' glasses orders (he said he's been "faster recently at putting them in" and that it should only be 2-3 weeks... it was 4 weeks without a word from him until we got our glasses). And, sadly and worst of all, gave our son a grossly INCORRECT PERSCRIPTION. He was quite off! My son was excited to read street signs upon picking up the new glasses from Dr. Folkers... the same glasses Dr. Folkers would not check for 20/20 vision inside his office. So we are reading signs outside as soon as we leave his office. And my son cannot read the same street signs I can read at a distance, with his brand new glasses! We make another appointment with PAMF optometry, get a very different prescription, and have to redo the lenses (which takes another 1-2 weeks elsewhere). VSP had to approve a new exam and new lenses for this year, voiding Dr. Folkers's. We are sad that going to Dr. Folkers cost our son WEEKS of good vision. But at least we caught it and corrected it so it wasn't a whole year! It wasn't even pleasant interacting with him, due to the stressful rushing and then guilt trips when we didn't make decisions "fast enough" for him. His wife/receptionist: - Is unable to answer simple questions about insurance and what your co-pay will be - Has to wait for Dr. Folkers to "figure out" and let patients know co-pays, but he is very busy - Assures patients that if we email Dr. Folkers he's "very good" about emailing back right away. We have 3 emails to Dr. Folkers (all sent with his wife's encouragement before the incorrect glasses were picked up i.e. while current patients) that he never responded to in any manner. read more

I'm happy with Dr. Folker, though he was running quite late for my morning appointment. He's super chatty which can be overwhelming, but he knows what he's doing. He was diligent in making sure my prescription was correct, taking a long time testing both eyes. He also took the time to understand what I needed from a pair of glasses and told me which options to get. I was taken aback by his approach but I'm glad that I accepted his decisions. The glasses are perfect! He also took a long time to bend the frames into shape so that they would sit correctly, which I've never seen an optometrist do before. read more

I don't know if it's my awful luck with optometrists, but I really didn't enjoy my experience at Dr Folkers office. I really feel I did my research before choosing his office--he only has top marks on all the sites, which I vehemently disagree with...hence this review. Short story: I was having headaches from my contacts and the doctor's diagnosis was that I've been overprescribed the past few years. Okay, not fun, but at least I know now. He lowered my prescription and gave me some trial contacts. I came back the following week and told him my eyes are now really unequal...one eye saw significantly less and I walked around looking like I was winking at everyone for the week--waiting for my eyes to "adjust" as he assumed they would. Instead of giving me another trial pair, Dr Folkers raised the power on that eye just a bit and rushed to order the contacts--I should have insisted on doing a trial, but I assumed his experience would account for this and I didn't want to waste time either. Obviously, it still wasn't enough power, and now I have a worthless year's supply of contacts for one eye and Dr Folkers won't return my calls. I understand these mistakes can happen, but I can't understand not returning a patient's call after their prescription wasn't accurate. read more

Here's the deal; I have good eyesight. No, seriously, really good eyesight. Before seeing Dr Folkers, I hadn't had an eye exam in over 15 years, and I never felt the lack. However, I had some time off work, and the spouse & I are paying for vision care, so I figured I should take advantage of the health coverage we're paying for. Turns out I didn't need to. (My vision is as great now as when I was a kid. For once, I got the good genes!) I did have a great experience figuring out that I didn't need to have gone in. Dr Folkers and his staff were a delight to work with. They're in a converted house near the Target. The office equipment looks old, but it really isn't. The tests were a snap, and Dr Folkers & his staff made every effort to keep me in the loop as to what was going on/about to happen. What I really liked about him was that he didn't just look at my eyes. He took a detailed medical history, including medications I'm on. Eye issues can often be either a precursor or a side effect of other medical problems. Any good optometrist will make sure to have an understanding of your entire medical history, not just your eyes. He's also quite funny, and we spent some time chatting about doctors (we both go to the same PcP). If I need an optometrist in the future, I'd certainly come back here. read more

Dr Folker is AMAZING. Pretty small office in downtown Sunnyvale on Murphy Ave. I first saw Dr Folker about 8 years ago, but he made me feel like I've been seeing him all this time. He is a very friendly and funny guy and jokes with you throughout the visit so there's not any awkward silence like any other medical appointment you would normally go to. He thoroughly explains the reasons for doing what he is doing and makes sure you understand the purpose of why. I would definitely recommend Dr Folker if you need to see an optometrist!!! read more

Dr. Folkers is great, I've been his patient for quite a long time now, over ten years (probably approaching 15). He's very thorough, asking questions about your eye health and really studies your situation very carefully. I feel like he really tries to get to know me and my situation. And he does this in a fairly unimposing way. He interrogates you in detail each time, which with some doctors I think I wouldn't like - but he does so in a very friendly and personal way that makes it enjoyable, even when, after ten years or so, the questions become a little predictable. Most importantly, I feel like he's been a master at dialing in a comfortable and effective prescription for me -- my vision has been great. If I have any reservation whatsoever, it's that I sometimes feel like I'm waiting in his office well past my appointment time waiting for things to get started. But I'm a big fan, in general, and I'm happy to have been his patient for so long. I considered rating a 4 for the wait times, but nah, the guy's just great; some things are worth the wait. read more

This biz owner is dishonest and just wants to earn your money. I went to get glasses prescription and decided to get a pair of glasses for driving. I asked him several times about high index. I have been wearing 1.74 due to high power so I specifically asked him if there is anything that's even thinner. I told him that my company made me one pair that is not 1.74, which just didn't work out for me. He said 1.74 is highest. So I asked him to give me the price after insurance coverage before deciding to get the glasses or not. He gave me the price but didn't explain anything on the print-out; he started to sell me LASIK non-stop. They rushed me to pay and I left the office around 5:45. I asked them to email me the statement for FSA reimbursement. The staff said ok. 5 min I got in my car to check my email. Nothing so I decided just take a photo of the print-out and found out that it's listed index 1.71sv. I called the office right away; no one picked up. I drove back around 6:05 and the light was off. I called next day morning and left the message said that I wanted to know what 1.71sv means and needed all information about the lenses (brand, certification listed index info) because that's what I always got before with other places. The staff called back to understand my message and said that she will email me the statement as promised yesterday and will ask dr. I didn't hear anything or gotten Email, so I called around 3pm. She said that somehow the system says 1.71 but it is actually 1.74. She didn't get any other information I requested and said she will. I started to feel fishy so i said I don't want the glasses made until I know the information because I don't want to pay almost $300 for a pair of glasses with poor quality than what I can get elsewhere. No email about the statement until I called around 4:45 and still no information from the doctor. About 5:45 I got message from staff said that the dr said the lenses were already ordered yesterday. Now, so the lenses were ordered at 6pm yesterday? 1.71 or 1.74? Or, after I called him out today, he ordered ones with 1.74 today? Either way, dishonest! I had to follow up myself and still no information? And the biz owner didn't bother to explain? The experience is so bad, I have to write my first revIew, and unfortunately, a bad one! Glasses are important to anyone, especially for driving. I am writing this first review hoping no one to be lied to by this biz owner again. read more

Dr Folkers is fantastic and his staff is very friendly. I had some issues getting my insurance information straight but they really worked with me on it. The office is small and I felt like I actually mattered, like I wasn't just a number. During my visit (no wait by the way) he explained everything very thoroughly. Honestly, he has a great attitude and a wonderful sense of humor. He really seems to know what he is talking about when it comes to choosing glasses too. Most times the person who does my exam is a different person than the one who helps me with frames. I believe having him do both was far superior. He knew my situation and how I would be using them and was able to explain pros and cons of different frames as they related to my needs and did not break the bank on frame cost. read more

Dr. Folkers has been my optometrical doctor for at least 20 years. He is very thorough and dedicated to good eye care. All my questions he takes the time to answer and he explains what he is doing during his exams. He asks a bunch of questions and enjoys conversation while he is working. Dr. David is amazing. He is the best optometrist I've ever been to. He took his time and explained everything that he was doing to check my eyes. He explained what test does, thus making clear its purpose. Even with glasses, he is mindful about what insurance will be permitting, and gave me suggestions so as to keep my out of pocket expenses to the minimum. The only thing you need to keep in mind is to have enough time, because appointments with him can last up to an hours, and that is not a bad thing at all. read more

He is super personable, takes his time, so yes the appointment can take longer than what you are used to but it is because he explains EVERYTHING. I just had a great experience with Dr. Folkers. This is a very small office: one doctor, one receptionist/assistant. Dr. Folkers went into a lot of detail explaining what the tests all meant, and how my eyes were doing, what part the brain plays in interpreting visual information, etc. He also dialed into a deeper level of detail than any other eye doctor I've had has done. Other glasses have always given me a headache after a few hours of use (I don't use them very often) and he took that into consideration and made really fine-toothed adjustments to my prescription and diagnosed a mild astigmatism I didn't know I had. He is a young-feeling doctor with a lot of energy. Unrelated to the quality of care, but I totally want to sample the sounds from his Dicon visual field test machine. read more

I have been in glasses since I was 8 (more than 25 years now) and have never had a better optometrist than Dr. Folkers. He is professional and knowledgeable, but is also funny and great with my kids. He has done an exceptional job of addressing my family's actual needs rather than just rushing us out the door with a pair of frames and a prescription. It is a small family practice, so the office is not much to look at,and things can move a little slowly at times, but the level of care and attention to detail more than outweigh any downside. read more

If you want to have an expensive pleasant conversation then be my guest and visit here but if you want a working prescription then don't go anywhere near this place. I am wearing lens for 7 years and never had an any problem. Dr.Folker changed my lens (from B+L soflens 59 to B+L soflens 38)WITHOUT INFORMING me and I can't see anything out of them. When I contacted them they don't want to take responsibility and are asking me to wear it for 2 weeks...I CAN'T SEE THROUGH THEM HOW CAN YOU TELL ME TO WEAR THEM FOR 2 WEEKS!! I had a great experience with Dr. Folkers. He spent a lot of time dialing in my prescription and clearly cared about getting the perfect glasses for me. He seemed much more knowledgeable than previous optometrists about getting the right prescription for my activity (which is mainly computer work). He has a great sense of humor and makes the sessions fun. He is very friendly - great with people. A couple of notes about Dr. Folkers to help set expectations. First, he is super tall (like 6'8"). The outside of his office looks like a converted house, so it can be a little confusing on the first visit. But, the inside is very modern, with up-to-date equipment. Regarding Dr. Folkers attitude and knowledge , unquestionably there is no doubt that he is a good doctor. But his staff seriously needs to be more proficient and the communication with the doctor himself needs to be better. The receptionist Dina seems to be hard of hearing. When I said her 3 times that its a 'T' not a 'D' and that I have repeated it thrice, she says "don't be nasty with me" and hangs up! Also I am trying to make an appointment with the doctor to get my newly made glasses checked, she takes me off the appointment list! This is so much of PITA to keep calling in 4-5 times in the same busy day. I wish there was a email that doctor would respond to at his time and schedule the appointments if required. Also parking space sucks big time , careful if your car's ground clearance is not good. read more

Dr Folkers is awesome. If I had a sixth star to give for a Yelp review, Dr. Folkers would be the recipient. Dr. Folkers should be the example by which all doctors are measured. With most doctors I feel like I'm annoying them when I ask a question that causes them to spend more than the budgeted 120 seconds they planned on spending with me. It was refreshing to have a doctor actually take interest and time in their work. Not only is Dr. Folkers a nice guy who enjoys what he does and approaches everything with enthusiasm and energy, but he also goes out of his way to be certain you are comfortable with, and understand, all of the tests and procedures being done. I really love Dr. Falker! I've had poor eyes sight since I was in middle school and I've been to a lot of eye doctors that made me feel really terrible about my eyesight (especially because one eye is much more dominant than the other.. and I wear contacts). Dr. Falker was the first doctor to actually make me feel good about my eyes and feel optimistic about my eye future (instead of feeling like I'm going down a terrible dwindling spiral of losing my vision). He ordered my contacts rapidly for me as I was going out of town and really gives 5 star service. When I go to Dr. Falker I feel like I'm getting an eye test from my best friend, I never thought going to an optometrist could be so enjoyable!! Plus he is super knowledgeable and has given me great tips to take better care of my eyes and my contacts :) read more

The Dr is very professional, very courteous and extremely friendly. No problem with that. However the prescription he wrote was not right for me because when i got the glasses my eyes hurt like hell and reading experience was very bad. SO i reverted back to my old prescription/glasses from my former optometrist. I called up, met him and told him exactly what i wrote here - but i got the impression he was humoring me hinting that i was imagining and takes time to "fit-in". There was no follow up after that. Giving 1 star for the lack of responsibility, commitment and customer care. David Folkers gave me a prescription which didn't work for me. I had a lot of strain after wearing the glasses for a week. I had pain in one of my eyes because I was wearing the prescription he gave me. I contacted his office three times. I was never able to talk to him directly. The secretary told me that the optometrist would call me regarding my problem but it never happened. The secretary told me to wear the glasses for a few months so my eyes get used to it. I went back to the place I ordered my lenses from and they confirmed that the lenses were made to the prescription. I've worn glasses for many years and I've never had such a problem. After calling in several times and not getting anywhere I visited another optometrist who confirmed that my prescription was wrong. What struck me the most about this optometrist is the lack of care and responsibility for customers. What am I supposed to do when I clearly have a problem with the prescription? The least he could do was to call me and take care of the issue. Please for the sake of your own health, time and money go find someone else and don't trust the five star reviews on here. read more

Dr. Folkers is probably the most honest eye doctor I've ever met, and he really cares about his patients. I came to him after a chain of relatively evil eye doctors who unnecessarily prescribed me progressives for a very weak prescription. I think those doctors found an excuse to make a few extra dollars from a poor sob. Now I wear a much simpler prescription that works much better than any of the progressives. read more

I agree with the 2 reviews posted ahead of mine. I was referred to Dr. Folkers via a co-worker who has been going to him for years. Dr. Folkers is extremely detailed and really honest when it comes to determining what type of eye glasses or contacts would suit you and your budget the best. I like his office because it feels like a home, which goes along nicely with the very welcome feeling you get when you go for an appointment. My regular optometrist had to cancel at the last minute so I checked out some alternate doctors near my home in Sunnyvale. After managing to make an appointment for my wife with on office that had good reviews on Yelp. I ended up coming across Dr. Folkers on Yelp so I made an appointment for myself. I had such a good experience that I called the other office and cancelled my wife's appointment so she could she Dr. Folkers as well. Now I'm glad my original appointment was cancelled by my regular doctor because Dr. Folkers is going to be our regular doctor from now on. All the reviews are accurate. My husband and I are both long-standing patients of Dr. Folkers. I should have submitted a review long before this. He is not only a wonderful eye doctor, but an outstanding human being. My husband is diabetic, so Dr. Folkers takes extra precautions with his eyes. He is extremely thorough in explaining everything! He is not only interested in our eyes, but our general health as well. His office is small and he has one staff member, Darlene -- who is one of the nicest ladies you could ever hope to meet. Because of the size of the office, Dr. Folkers knows ALL of his patients -- and in our case, knows our family who he has never met!
