We did a family trip up to the mountains for a couple of days and on our way back home, we stopped by the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens because I knew my mother in-law loved flowers and I thought she would enjoy it here. We parked in the parking lot next to the big open field. Unfortunately there was an event that day and we had to pay I think $10 (can't remember the exact amount). I guess it evened out since the garden is free? Anywho, the garden was a short walk from the parking lot. It's named after the former first lady who preferred Vail as their vacation spot and helped the community flourish to what it is today. There's signage throughout the garden to read about Betty Ford, the plants, and wild life. It's a small garden, but there are plants from all over the world and we enjoyed strolling through the various paths. My mother in-law enjoyed it as well, so mission accomplished! If you're in the area and love plants and flowers, it's worth a quick stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

It was so peaceful and enchanting to walk around the garden. In addition to plants and flowers, we also saw lots of butterflies and hummingbirds. One of the owners greeted us and immediately made us feel at home. We asked if he could make something akin to a vodka sprite (I know, basic) while we looked at the menu. When he returned with the best vodka sprite ever. At Archetype, explained the owner, they make their vodka from grapes. During the distillation process, they infuse their vodka with different flavors. For the vodka sprite, he used a lemon/lime infused vodka, a lil simple syrup, and some spritz. And when I say he explained this process, trust that he explained it throughly. We decided to have a tasting. We ordered the lavender, the earl grey, and the Serrano. Taken neat, each was incredibly smooth. Our host explained, that made with grapes this vodka has much less of a bite than traditional vodkas. Also, you might think the Serrano would have been hot hot, but it was not. Because they introduce the flavoring elements (fruits, peppers, what not) during the distillation process only the essence of the flavors remain in the vodka, so no sugars or whatever it is that makes biting into a pepper burn. Do yourself a favor and visit this place on your next trip to Denver!

I decided to make a long past due visit to Archetype to check out their distilled spirits. In addition to their vodka and gin, they make a long list of small batch distilled spirits of various flavors. When you walk in there are a few high top tables and a long bar. My recommendation is to sit at the bar and chat with the bartenders. They are knowledgeable and will craft a cocktail based on what your favorite flavor profile is. As my friend C says, "if it's muddled N will drink it!" She's not wrong. She speaks the truth. I told the bartender that a cocktail with either the blackberry or strawberry spirits would be a great start. He mixed strawberry with their mint spirit, added soda, and ice in a tall glass. It was really refreshing. Because they have so many different flavored spirits they can craft almost anything. If you like a dirty martini, they have blue cheese and olive flavored spirits. I tasted the blue cheese spirit separately and it was hmmm...interesting by itself but mixed with the olive spirit and "ta-da!" - you've got your dirty martini. Their vodka and wine are made from wine grapes. I didn't get a chance to try either the vodka or gin this time but will definitely be back on my next ski trip to Vail. The distillery is located just a few doors down from Mountain Standard near the bridge over Gore Creek.

We had the AMEX upgrade deal, and our suite in the 180's was awesome. Considering we were coming in on Thanksgiving, having that awesome room was convenient since not much would be open in town. Our suite had two bathrooms, a reclining sofa (which we will be shopping for at home and was SO relaxing), a murphy bed, really comfortable main bed, a fireplace, and a big patio. Our fireplace had a problem in getting going, but Jacob came immediately and helped us out...on the holiday night. We needed some food, but were over Thanksgiving food for the day, and Amanda and Ben helped us out in Fitz's lounge in getting some mac and cheese off the shown menu. They have two heated pools. The other one had a waterfall feature, but we never really went to that one just because of convenience. We liked ours with two hot tubs of varying levels of heat, and apparently redone in the last year. The steam room was busted during our visit, but they have that and a sauna available, along with a spacious fitness facility that we never used. Their cool ceiling fans are pictured below also...very unique looking ones in each of our rooms. The parking onsite is underground, and I liked it because I didn't have to ask to get something in or out of my car through a valet person. We had an included breakfast, and it was high quality food, and even had an omelette station. The lobby had a great Christmas tree, along with a side room with a piano (which they allowed me to play at night). I love everything about this place, and it was a short walk to Vail Village and anything you needed or wanted to partake in. I highly recommend this place, and see you there next time...

Note: Hyatt did reach out and make things as right as could be done after the fact, so I'm happy…read moreabout that. Their staff are typically great, and their awards program destroys the other major hotel chains, so I'll stay loyal even though I have some bad experiences from time to time. They also say they're going to get the issues with this unit repaired. If you're considering renting a unit in the Vail 21 building, in summer, do yourself a favor and don't. Hyatt does not bother to put this on their site, but the units have no air conditioning. Coloardo is not exactly the moderate climate state it once was 30 or 40 years ago when this building was likely constructed; it gets pretty hot in the summer even up in the mountains. Temps hit 88 two of the four days I was there in June 2022, 82 and 87 the other two days. Next up; at least in unit 601, you have a total of four openings to the outside for cooling. The sliding doors on the main and master level, and the two guest bedrooms each have a window that only opens about four inches. If the wind doesn't blow the right direction, there is little to no movement inside. If you do have everything opened up, you get to listen to I70 all night long as the big rigs roll by, you may get a helicopter or two from either the Vail trauma center or the national guard training, and at 4am the birds start going crazy outside since sunrise is a bit after 5am. So we arrive, the unit is blazing hot. We attempt the 'natural air conditioning' procedure documented in the check-in pamphlet, i.e. open the windows at night, close and curtain during the day so you can't see the view you paid to see. Got zero sleep because the lower rooms were ~79, the master up top was a crisp 85 until about 4-5am when it hit 79. I was up all night because of the aforementioned issues, which is how I know. Toughed it out the second day, but changed my mind late afternoon and wanted a different room anywhere. Front desk didn't answer nor return my voicemail. I then discovered the floorboard radiators were on and super hot. Yes, 88 outside and the heaters were on... Call the emergency maintenance line, they can't send someone until the morning. Seriously. Maintenance shows up at 11am after repeated calls. They show me a secret panel you can remove from the wall to expose the hot water valves that allow you to shut down all the radiators, because the thermostat-controlled valves are broken, hence the heat even when I had everything set to off. So, with little sleep, days one and two were write offs. With the temps tolerable, we at least made the most of days three and four. Aside from the above, unit 601 is a good choice for 20 somethings in the winter ski season, but not much else. It's an odd mix of random things that were probably 'modern' a decade or two ago, but now just look out of place, and were not meant for commercial use, so they're mostly all beat up. You can't close the master, it just has a curtain down to the living room. The spiral stairs to it are impossible to walk quietly. It has a sink that splashes you when you use it because of the angle the faucet hits the slab style counter. The shower either blasts you with high pressure from the ceiling, or has a hand held that won't stay upright in its holder. Most of the outlets in the kitchen don't work. The guest bath has a 'modern' sink no one will be able to figure out. You'll never guess which light switches control what. There's no less than four separate thermostats. The TV's are super tiny and dated. Just a big disappointment.
