I love ski towns. They are always so charming. This was my first time visiting the town of Vail and skiing at the resort. I loved waking up each morning to mountain views and snowfall. Around 5,000 people are residents here. Vail was founded as a ski resort in 1962 and then became its own town in 1966. From hiking in the summer to skiing in the winter, there is a lot to do here. But like most ski towns, nothing is cheap here as Vail caters more to the wealthier crowd. At the base of the mountain is Lionshead district and Vail Village. Both have lodging, retail shops, and restaurants with mostly pedestrian only streets. The ski resort itself is the third-largest single-mountain ski resort in the U.S. I did some of my best skiing ever on this mountain and had so much fun. The town of Vail is host to many special events each year like the Vail Film Festival.

Just walking around makes you feel like you are in a European town with walkable mixed development (even though most are probably vacation homes), free and comfortable public buses that run every few minutes, lots of bike rentals, and a lot of Germanic buildings in both the village and the Lion's Head. Beautiful spot to just walk around if you're in the area in the summer/fall. I was waiting for Rocky Mountain National Park to open its roads due to snow the previous night so stopping by Vail was just worth it. I didn't stay for very long but the layout was pretty cool and the walkable streets make it a very nice place to stroll. I do wish that there are more building that aren't just super high end shops, extremely pricey restaurants and real estate offices, but it's still gorgeous to walk around for most of it. Overall, cute spot that just needs a few more things like a bigger diversity of cafe choices, shops, and it'll be perfect.

Super fun ski town! Great runs for intermediate and advanced skiers. Less interesting for beginners. The town is so charming and big for a ski town at the base. Lots of shopping and restaurant options. The new game creek bowl chair is open and is running great. The parking situation is crazy expensive here compared to anywhere else I've been. Even beaver creek has a cheaper outdoor lot. Overall so fun though! The views here are so gorgeous and so many options with all the different bowls and areas to ski!

Vail is a small town set within the White River National Forest. I have only visited in the winter time when it's bustling with winter activities but have heard the summer is just as enjoyable. It takes about an hour and forty five minutes to drive to Vail from Denver. Vail Village is well known for its high end shopping and places to eat. The cobblestone streets are heated and there is a skating rink in the center of town. Lionshead Village is about an eight minute walk from Vail Village and offers more eating and dining options. If you do not want to walk a bus runs between them daily.

Amazing place to visit. The glory of this town is how it has been made. Pedestrian only roads in vail village and one of my favorite place till date of all my expeditions. Colorado trip without vail will be incomplete. Ski all around and lot of restaurants to eat. There is some charm in this town. People are also very nice in this town.

Having been to a number of mountains on the east coast and Rockies, I will have to admit Vail is one of my favorites. There's a lot of variety among all bowls and peaks. You'll find some lift bottlenecks here and there but you're out skiing so life's good. It takes a while to get there but Blue Sky Basin is definitely worth checking out. Watch the cliffs on the way back though. While you're at the back of the resort, it's worth checking out a little BBQ (when that's a thing and it's not COVID season, of course). Got the brisket when I was there last year and there's something special about a brisket sandwich with fries and chili when it's chilly out there. For those reading this when it's still COVID times, I'm sorry we can't enjoy the warm food. For those reading this after, enjoy and be at least a little glad you're able to spend that $20 or more.

Vail... I could definitely get used to it! My family and I stayed there for a few days and it was a dream! Keep in mind that it was during the summer, so if you're reading this looking for info on wintertime, this review might only be partially relevant. I watched a video (via YouTube) prior to visiting Colorado and it said that Vail was not worth visiting. I completely went against it during my next CO visit and absolutely loved it. There were fun hiking trails at the top of the mountain (via gondola), Vail Village was just lovely - with restaurants, shops and the cutest buildings. Because of COVID, it was not super busy, but there was some crowds. I loved the walking paths, parks and the creek that runs through the town. It was so beautiful during the summer months and I hope to return to stay longer in the future. Colorado is so lovely.

Before we came, we'd heard a mix of praise and disdain for this well-known resort. A lot of our local friends boasted its incredible ski terrain, but also remarked that lines, especially at the base areas, could be long and time consuming. After skiing several days here, I can honestly say the lift lines were nowhere near as bad as we had heard. What's really nice is that most major trafficked areas have estimates as to how much time the line takes, so you can plan your decent accordingly. Of note, you can also download the app with the EPIC pass to achieve the same benefit, plus predictions for later times. The point is: don't let the "overcrowded" rumors discourage you: Vail is Vail. This is some of the best skiing I've done with plenty of skiable terrain and parks. My personal favorites are Avanti (frontside) and Dragonsteeth (back bowls). Of course, you can't go wrong with Blue Sky Basin if you're up for skiing the catwalks to get there. Game Creek Bowl is also a lot of fun if you're craving some bowl skiing a bit closer to the frontside. The vibe at Vail is what you'd expect at a classy mountain resort. The food on the mountain, for the most part, is fairly decent and no more pricey than you'd generally find at most other resorts. The vistas are unbeatable. We will definitely be back!

Is that...?

Vail is beautiful, but my heart is with the Smokies. I love being outdoors, so I'm surprised I haven't fallen in love with CO. But if it's not there, it's not there. I think this might relate to ski runs in the mountains whereas the Smokies is mostly all natural (all trees).

Vail Village - Bummed out about missing that one thing back home? Nope, not exactly.

For some reason, I expected some changes, but the place looked exactly the same as I remembered it from over 10 years ago! Every square inch is just so picturesque! I did feel that there were a few negatives...for me (the non-skier). I just wished they had more boutiques that weren't so ski-oriented...and nicer coffee shops. Despite being such a swanky village, they also seemed to run short on nice bakeries and coffee shops. In fact, I was nearly shocked how basic some places were! Plenty of nice restaurants though...and many had cool European ambiance. Again, I'm not a skier, but I had no problems spending my time (up to 6 hours or more) walking around this pretty village. It truly felt as if I was in Germany or Switzerland. LOVE this place!!

We did a family trip up to the mountains for a couple of days and on our way back home, we stopped by the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens because I knew my mother in-law loved flowers and I thought she would enjoy it here. We parked in the parking lot next to the big open field. Unfortunately there was an event that day and we had to pay I think $10 (can't remember the exact amount). I guess it evened out since the garden is free? Anywho, the garden was a short walk from the parking lot. It's named after the former first lady who preferred Vail as their vacation spot and helped the community flourish to what it is today. There's signage throughout the garden to read about Betty Ford, the plants, and wild life. It's a small garden, but there are plants from all over the world and we enjoyed strolling through the various paths. My mother in-law enjoyed it as well, so mission accomplished! If you're in the area and love plants and flowers, it's worth a quick stop, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Vail Mountain Club

With this year's ski season rapidly approaching, and my upcoming winter trip to Utah finally…read morebooked, I thought it'd be worthwhile to reflect on my past few excellent years at Vail with some tips: 1 - If you do nothing else for the rest of your life, SKI THE BACK BOWLS (maps here: http://www.vail.com/mountain/explore-mountain/mountain-trail-map.aspx). Don't ever leave...Seriously! Vail's whole claim "like nothing on earth" comes to life once you've skied here. Blue Sky Basin is pretty badass too if you're looking for untouched powder, tree skiing, and plenty of rocks/cliffs to jump off. These areas are what distinguish Vail from almost every other ski resort in the U.S. (European skiing above the tree line is very similar in experience to Vail's back bowls). Both areas are also much quieter than the front side, which has a tendency to always crowd up by the lodge area...this brings me to #2... 2 - If you must ski the front side of Vail, get as high up as you can, and take small runs down (ie. from the summit to Mid-Vail). Rinse and repeat, and you'll stay away from the sometimes overwhelming base-area crowds. 3 - If you're not staying in Vail or Lionshead Villages, hang out there for a round after the ski day. Vail is known for their apres ski scene, and you'll see why once you get out of your skis and boots after your last run. There are a plethora of restaurants and bars, many with live music and drink specials. Certainly, you can probably get cheaper food/drink if you're willing to drive out of the village, but the scene and people alone make everything worth it. 4 - Regardless of where you're staying, utilize the free in-town shuttle buses. Vail Village is typically more expensive than Lionshead, so we end up staying in Lionshead (same proximity to the slopes, walking distance to both Born Free and Eagle Bahn gondolas). You're already spending $120+ a day on skiing and even more on food and drink, so if you're looking to shave cost without really sacrificing much, this is the way to do so.

I am proud to say that because of vail I can now snowboard with ease. If you are debating between what mountains to board when in Colorado, I would say vail is a perfect option. The mountain runs are a good 30 to 45 minutes. The lifts up the main mountains are called gondolas and they are insulated and warm. Once you hit the main slopes in order to get to the top upper slopes you need to take the regular lifts. The regular lifts are cold, as expected. Lift tickets are about 160$ per a person for a whole day pay. It's $80 per a person for half a day. The vail village makes this a must. It's a quaint town with loads of shopping, dinning and ski/ boarding related stuff. As a boarder, I do have to mention that this mountain is way more skier friendly than boarder friendly. But overall, it's a great place to board.
