I had a terrific experience with Sun Rays. Signing up and scheduling was straightforward and easy, and I was able to start on my preferred date. Dana is very meticulous and would always send me reminders the day before my lesson. The staff is communicative and would always let me know ahead of time if there were any changes to my lessons, so I always knew what to expect. The road test was booked for me well in advance so I could make the proper arrangements and take the day off work. Now I want to give a huge shout-out to Ray. Many reviews here have already sung his praises, but I will say it again that he is the best instructor I could have ever asked for. I remember the first day when I was nervous as heck having never been behind the wheel in my life before, and he was just so patient, so chill, so kind, and telling me what I needed to know on the road. I learned a lot, such as good tips for parking and turning, ensuring sound judgment on the road, and many things that go beyond what is needed for the road test. Ray is very attentive to detail and would always point out my bad habits to help me improve. He never yelled or made me feel worse than I already did about my mistakes, and instead always provided constructive criticism on how to avoid them in the future. He taught me to become a better driver and not just to pass the test. Ray is also very flexible and accommodating. Not only did he pick up and drop me off at my address, but he was also willing to drop me off at nearby locations when I needed to go somewhere after my lesson. Before I forget, I must mention that Ray is very punctual, and that is so important to me because our lessons start on time and I always get my hour's worth of practice. I took my test at Coney Island and passed. :) I was so anxious and didn't even think I would make it, but once the test started I was able to calm down and did what I was taught during my lessons. I'm glad we got to the site early so that when the examiners arrived I was able to start my test right away. This is such an amazing place, and I would highly recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a driving school. I passed my road test on my first attempt with ten lessons. I was extremely nervous during my first lesson because I never drove before, however the minute I got into the car for the first time, instructor Ray believed in me and taught me the things that I needed to know. He was always very patient with me and always supported me. Even before my road test I was very nervous, however Ray believed in me and was like "You got this!" Every time I had a lesson with him, we would practice everything: turning, parking, and 3 point turns. Every time I did something wrong, he was very honest with me and gave me suggestions so that I can do better and also how to be prepared for my road test. Over the course of the driving lessons, I also had another instructor: Dennis, and he was also very nice, and another awesome excellent instructor. I had a lot of parking issues at the start, however Dennis gave awesome suggestions on how I can improve my parking and do better. Both Ray and Dennis are awesome instructors, and they will truly prepare you for your road test and set you up for success. The driving school also comes to pick you up and also drop you off after your lesson. The office is very nice and organized as well, and the people in the front desk are super nice, and they will know who you are when you call them, so it's truly a wonderful place because they truly care about the success of each and every person that is there. The organization and also the scheduling of classes is very awesome, they can work around your schedule and find the best time for your classes that week and they are very good at communicating with you, and also reminding you a day before if you have a class. Trust your instructors and ask any questions that you may have and they would be glad to answer them. If I could give 10 stars, I would. I took almost 14 lessons with another driving school around 8th ave before knowing about Sun Rays driving school. I failed the road test in Staten Island twice with the previous school, and I cried every time because Staten Island was supposed to be the easiest location as the roads were wider, yet I still failed. I almost gave up. But many people told me switching schools could help. So I started looking around, and another person's review on Yelp also had the same experience. I went to Sun Ray's offices to visit the place and inquired about the classes. I've never seen an office so clean and neat. The girl at the front desk was very nice. I decided to give it a try. The office confirmed all my appointments via text the day before the lessons and always knew who I was when I called. They are very well organized. During my first weekday lesson, Ray was very patient and friendly. I told him my story, and he reviewed my driving skills and was able to point out why I was having difficulties. He provided me with excellent techniques and things to observe when driving and how to improve them. On the weekends, I had a different instructor, Derek, with a different car. I intentionally wanted a different instructor and car to gain more experience and confidence. Derek is an excellent instructor. He is very young and patient. He is a pro at driving and instructing students. Don't let his youthful appearance fool you! He is very respectful and always taught me how to drive safely. I enjoyed my classes, and every penny I paid them was worth it. The only regret I have was I didn't know about them before. I probably would have saved money and time by not going to 8th ave and walking up to 55 st. At SunRay, they pick up the students if they live around the area. They also have students drive around different areas of the neighborhood to practice. I learned pretty well how to turn and drive in very narrow streets. They charge $480 for 10 driving lessons meanwhile nearby schools are charging $300 for 10 driving lessons WITH BETTER/RELIABLE SERVICE. The owners and instructors DO NOT CARE if you pass or not. They do not give a single damn. They are not detail-oriented at all. Their plan is to keep scheduling you for lessons and they keep telling you that people rarely pass on the first try. For the previous students that have passed first try, they are the ones who frequently drove with their families/friends in addition to Sun Ray's USELESS driving lessons. If you are NOT a skilled driver already, you are simply WASTING YOUR MONEY by coming here. The positive reviews are all FAKE - they BEG you to write reviews for them when you finally pass. During the lessons, the instructors will make the student double park and wait for them to smoke cigarettes and buy food/coffee. The owner (Ray) even asked me to drive his wife somewhere DURING my PAID lesson. They have no respect whatsoever. This happened to me personally and many of my friends as well with MULTIPLE instructors from this place. Completely UNPROFESSIONAL. Michael is one of the best instructors! He is super nice and trusts you with his car by not breaking so much. This builds up your confidence. He was super helpful with tips and tricks when it comes to parallel parking and k turns. He also gave me advice on stop signs that helped a bunch. Sometimes I would make mistakes and he would always call me out on it nicely and tell me, "If you were to do that on the test, automatic fail." This helped put me in my damn place hahah. Him telling me this made me more cautious and aware of my surroundings while driving. He was also super fun to talk to and that's such an awesome quality for an instructor to have. The scheduling was also great when it came to making my schedule for lessons and the test. Guys, I cannot stress this enough, BUT PLEASE TAKE YOUR LAST LESSON ON THE DAY OF YOUR TEST!!! LITERALLY 2 HOURS BEFORE YOUR TEST! You will not regret it. Just wake up a little early for one day that will change your entire future with independence! I did this and I passed. I did great! Sun Ray's Driving School is amazing! If you want a fabulous, patient and nice instructor, pick RAY! He is also the principal of the school. He is ALWAYS on time to pick me up sometimes even early but always calls you in advance to make sure it is ok with you. He mainly drops me off right in front of my house but if he is in a rush to pick up another student, he drops me off half a block away from my house which I think is extremely fair. He always responds quickly when you text him. He answers all your questions if you have any while you are driving. They are a very busy school so I was only scheduled one lesson per week which I think is pretty good since I was able to get time to practice in between lessons. I was looking for an instructor that was fluent in English, to my surprise, that was pretty hard to find, but Ray from Sun Rays Driving School speaks excellent English! On the day of the road test, I was able to get a lesson in before the test which really helped. I took the test at Coney Island and passed the first time. My friend and I just passed my drivers exam after the first try. My friend and I took classes together with instructor Ray at Sun Rays Driving school for just 5 lessons. Every lesson is 1 hour per student and much needed for a noob driver like us. Ray is very patient and laidback, and stern where needed. He helped me build confidence in my driving skills and doesn't helicopter you and gives you the space to take in information without panicking. Any questions were answered promptly and gives tons of tips on turning, stops, parallel parking, K/U-Turns. Don't hesitate to ask any questions and ask for feedback. I mentioned that I needed more pointers on turning and parking and Ray is very accommodating. Sun Rays gives you your lesson schedule on the first day for your following lessons. On the day of the exam, the instructor brings you to the exam and lends you the car for the driver's test. Communication is great and punctual, appreciated that. I had no previous driving experience but managed to pass my exam thanks to my instructors. The instructors I've had were all patient, informative, and encouraging. The driving instructors will do their best to try to alleviate tension and build your confidence while also ensuring your safety. Matthew helped me become familiar with turning and practicing road rules. Michael (or Mike as others may know him) helped me practice k turns, parallel parking, and practicing under various road conditions. Even if I continually made errors or regressed or almost crash the car multiple times during the time in between lessons, he remained calm and would give various tips to improve where you are weakest in your driving. I was able to learn a lot to practice good habits and test them in various road conditions, building confidence and efficiency. I just passed my test! This was the first driving school I went to. I was skeptical of the school at first, but the staff was nice and they were helpful. I never drove a car before, so I went into the lessons blind, but my instructor (Michael) was understanding and informative of the things that I should/needed to be doing. Overall, it took me roughly 15~ hours of lessons (Do not be overly confident that you will pass the road test with only single digit hours like I originally thought I would, unless your instructor thinks you are ready) and 3 road test(s) (The first two tests I was in a rush to take them even though my instructor told me I was not ready; but I did not listen to him, but he was still supportive of my decision anyways). I registered for 16 classes which was 8 lessons, 1hr and 30 mins once each week with the instructor Ray. I never drove or been in the driver's seat ever so I was really nervous. He made me really comfortable and was straightforward with everything. I learned how to make a U-turn the first day and parking the third lesson. Then the rest was just practice. Ray taught extremely well and I liked the fact he cracked jokes. My experience overall was amazing and was worth every penny. I took my road test and I passed with one deduction. I recommend this place to any beginner. My brother and his friend are also taking classes with him too. I haven't have a license in over 20 years, since being in NYC but had driven for years before. I did the classes and a 1 hour driving lesson with Mike, observed two others before we took our test. Mike is the greatest! Got me up to speed with the traffic rules, different stop signs, proper turning and always check your blind spots. What I was most nervous about and seems most people are is parallel parking. He taught me a perfect system to put the car right in the spot, right next to the curb with no hits! The whole experience from start, getting my learners permit, didn't know I had to schedule and wait til early Feb, I stopped by in early Dec to steps along the way and finish was nice and easy. In a dire need to learn how to drive I came to sun rays driving school and I'm glad to say that I don't regret it one bit. The staff at the school are really nice and supportive as they helped me get my schedule down for the 5 lessons I needed and an instructor who would be willing to teach me in short time to how be a great safe drive. I took 16 lessons (8 classes) and passed on my first try. My instructor was pretty relaxed which is what I prefer. He also gave me a lot of different tips on how to pass the road test and how to drive in real life situations. Def recommend this school- the admin is also super efficient. She schedules me on the fly and sends me a follow-up text to confirm each and every time. It's also nice to know that they enforce covid precautions (masks and gloves at every lesson). If I had to do it all over again (which I'm glad I don't have to!), I'll choose them over and over again. Pricing is super reasonable compared to other schools in the area). Best driving school I went to. Tried 2 other schools and the instructor was quiet and kept hitting the brakes. Went to this school and the instructor is great. Very hands on and tells you what you need to be seeing on the road. Very knowledgeable. Irons out any issues you have and has diagrams for you to know what to do to be safe on the road. If you mess something up you will do it and fix it till you master it. Passed the test 2nd try no problem. Pricing is very good honestly I got the package #2 and I got more knowledge from this package than any package from any other school. 10/10 recommend. Easily the best driving teacher out there! He's very calm, relaxing, and fun to be with in the car.
