I just moved out to Gilbert, AZ about eight months ago. I've been to another mechanic place in the past six months, but let me say this, Sun Devil Auto is my favorite place to take my car to be fixed. I spoke mainly with a service rep named Travis. He was friendly, knowledgable, and helpful. A+ service and my car runs wonderfully because of them. I seriously can't say enough good things about Travis and Sun Devil Auto. They had to order a part for me and they had it within an hour and my car was fixed quickly, but, most of all, with top notch quality. Shout out to a company that values customer service. We had previously been using another business to get our car fixed. Every time I went I was talked down to and as though I knew nothing about my car. I was raised by a mechanic and felt that the repair they wanted me to get made no sense. I called Sun Devil and they said we could bring it in for a no obligation inspection at no cost. I have mixed feelings about this shop. I will say their oil changes are cheapest in town and they offer very speedy service. However I have been going here for almost three years and over that course of that time my trust and faith in sun devil auto has greatly diminished. First complaint is regarding my key fob no longer functioning on my Camry even though I switched the battery and tried to reprogram it. I was informed by sun devil auto that the receiver on my car was broken and that it would need replacing. The nice thing was that they were willing to allow me to bring in a part I could buy cheaper on eBay and they would just charge me installation fee. I chose not to have it fixed due to cost. I took it to a local mechanic my family has used for 30 years in California, he informed me it wasn't the car receiver, but the fob itself. Instead of paying $300 for a new receiver and work as sun devil suggested I paid $80 for two new fobs, programmed them and now it works fine. Secondly, I had my front breaks changed by my local mechanic because they were squeaking. He told me that he estimated my rear breaks had about a year left before they should be changed. Next trip to sun devil auto, just three months after the mechanic trip in California, I was told my rear breaks should be changed immediately and that the pads would be completely gone soon (the front desk associate tried to tell me that I was not only putting myself in danger, but everyone else on the road in danger by not replacing my rear breaks therefore to keep others around me safe the breaks really should be changed, mind you my front ones are brand new). I told the front desk associate I had not heard my breaks squeaking, as my front breaks did, and that I was recently told they should last another 9 months at minimum. I had them changed 9 months after that appointment by sun devil and not only were they not squeaking at that point, but they showed me the pads and there was still a little wear to go. I appreciate the concern, but seemingly attacking my character to get my to pay for unnecessary service is suspect. Thirdly, on my last appointment I was informed that my cabin air filter was missing completely, and no one has touched my car except sun devil auto in that time. When I notified them, not even an apology was offered. Lastly, and most concerning, is last month I took my car to get my oil changed. And they told me my rack and pinion needed to be replaced and that if I didn't do it, my car would most likely suffer further and more expensive damage. I consulted several friends that work on cars in California, my mechanic in California, and the internet. All of which advised getting a second opinion. Not to mention the "discounted" quote they offered being $300 more than multiple shop I called and asked how much it would cost for the same service. I was going to be able to take my car to California to see my long time mechanic soon so I opted to wait. My California mechanic informed me that he did a thorough inspection and no such issue was found with my rack and pinion and that some other (not to mention much cheaper pieces) were actually what could be replaced but was not completely necessary. I will admit, I know next to nothing about cars and I trusted sun devil auto had my best interest in mind. Like I said, you can't beat their oil change price and turnover time, but obviously they use that to get you in to try and convince you to get more work done. I wouldn't fault people for going there for the cheap oil change, just be very wary of their extra recommendations. read more

This place is the best! I've taken my car here for everything - they've replaced a belt in my car and told me about an axle I needed replaced. They didn't pressure me or try to sell me on it, just told me it was needing replacement. They don't try to upsell you on repairs you don't need and the prices are more than fair. But their customer service is good so they offered to honor the appointment. What they didn't tell me is that I'd be waiting nearly 2 hours for it. It all started with some clear green viscous goop on the floor of my garage. I cleaned it up a few times and it would reappear a few days later. So I decided to run my car down to Sun Devil Auto. They're pretty close to the house and I'm not a fan of taking it to the dealer. I was promptly greeted and the guy behind the desk took the time to ask me questions and listen to my concerns. I should probably mention that I had also been meaning to replace my Serpentine belt for a few weeks and had actually bought a belt at Autozone in anticipation of having a buddy put it on for me. Unfortunately that fell through and the belt had been just sitting in my car. The guy at the desk saved me the hassle of having to return the belt (without a receipt) and agreed to put the belt on for only the cost of the labor. They called me a couple hour later to report that they had narrowed the dripping fluid problem to two possible options. I needed to replace all my cooling hoses which were starting to show signs of aging and I needed to replace something related to my a/c compressor. The only reason I give them 4 stars instead of a 5 is because they weren't sure which of the two was actually the problem. They wanted me to do both for over $700!! Which was about $400 over my budget. I shared my budget and asked him to choose which of the two problems was the most pressing and the result of the dripping fluid. He was either unable to answer or unwilling because he wanted so much for me to do both.. I couldn't tell. Eventually I decided to go with the hose replacement. We go to San Diego pretty frequently and I'm always nervous going over that mountain range near Jacumba with all the "beware of car over-heating" signs. Unfortunately, within a few days I realized that wasn't the problem as the fluid still leaks on my garage floor. A follow-up trip to NAPA revealed that my A/C compressor is leaking oil and needs to be replaced. So kudos to Sun Devil Auto for identifying that as a problem, but bummer that they couldnt narrow it down to just that. Edit: I saved the money to have the A/C fixed and went back in to the same Sun Devil Auto in September (4 months after the initial inspection and bid). To my surprise they upped the price on the repair by more than 70%. On top of that, they held my car for the entire day before telling me. I took it someplace else and wont return to Sun Devil Auto. read more

I went to this shop because of the great Yelp reviews. But after going here, I thought I should offer a second opinion. I took my Honda CR-V in because my AC went out (in July of course). They looked at it and told me that I need to replace my AC compressor, receiver drier, evaporator expansion valve, one of my cooling fans and it's assembly, and my AC condenser. They told me a price of $2,500. I told them there was no way I was going to pay that much to repair my $3,000 car and to just forget it I would come pick it up. Then he said, let me crunch some numbers and see what I can do. I told them to give me a price to do the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM that would get the AC running. They called back and said they could do it for $1,500 but wouldn't replace the AC condenser (but they highly recommended that I replace the condenser). I told them that I would have to think about it and could tolerate the heat while I saved up my pennies. Anyway, I decided to take it to another shop for a second opinion. $400 dollars later my AC is blowing nice and cold. I just had to replace the AC coil and one of the cooling fans. Sure it probably would be nice to replace all that other stuff (compressor, drier, valves, condenser), but if I don't need it, I don't want to pay for it. On the plus side, they were very friendly, fast and polite. But either they don't know much about cars, or they were just trying to screw me into buying a bunch of stuff I didn't need. It would be one thing if I brought in a new car and wanted it to be kept in tip-top shape...maybe then I would spend my money replacing all that stuff for the fun of it. But when I ask them to do the minimum to get me back on the road, I would expect them to do the minimum to get me back on the road. I don't really leave reviews, but when I was talking to a friend about how I choose this shop because of the good reviews she said, "It's probably because people who have experiences like yours don't really leave reviews." So here you have it. They have good customer service, and obviously lots of people have had good experiences there, but that's not the case for me. I like having the extra $2,100 I saved in my pocket. read more

So, here's what happened: I scheduled an appointment for just an oil change to take place at 2 pm yesterday afternoon. I called at around 11:00 in the morning and spoke to Travis to make sure that I had a spot. I get there, and my appointment was not scheduled and had to give my info again for another gentleman and was promised 45 minutes. I was on a time constraint and this happened to be a little closer to the mechanics I usually take it too (by the way, I go to Sunland Auto on Broadway and Val Vista--please go check them out). 40 minutes after I dropped the car off, I get a call regarding the hydraulics of the brakes of my car and that they were leaking. I told them, I have never had problems concerning the brakes of my car and they said that it was unsafe to drive; basically they were at the point that if I pressed on the brakes, they wouldn't go and that I would get into a car accident if I decided to drive it. I said "No, thank you. But I'll get just get oil change done and get a second opinion." I was given this look like I was stupid and crazy but I was not about to shell out 439 dollars and some change for work that I did not need to be done. Paid for my oil change, left, took it to Sunland Auto (I am compelled to tell Yelp that for those who have not been to Sunland Auto, they have a perfect 5 star rating and you will see why if you haven't been there already) and spoke to my trusted mechanic who has looked at 2 of the 3 family cars, including my own. He looked at my brakes for free and said that my brakes were nowhere near being close to being too dangerous to drive. So, don't take anything here. Supposed to be uneventful and pick up the car for an oil change, not have to argue so that I don't get ripped off and spend almost five hundred dollars for a twenty-five dollar visit. read more

I have always gone to this sun devil for my typical maintenance issues. About six months ago I needed to replace my coolant system which I did. I had issues a couple months later with the system leaking fluid and it ended up being a faulty radiator cap which I replaced, they did comp my next oil change. At my most recent oil change they told me I should replace my radiator cap so I was obviously frustrated. They did a warranty check and the brand new radiator they put in was cracked. They did replace that under warranty. The second I drove my car off the lot I was having issues with the transmission. I called them the next morning and they basically said that they never touched that system and I would have to bring it in to get it checked but that was a completely different system. I had no desire to bring it back so had it checked by AAA and I had zero transmission fluid. After it was all disconnected for the radiator repair it drained and clearly they never checked it again. Luckily I got it checked out somewhere else within a few days before my transmission failed. I'm giving 2 stars because overall my history with them was fine until I needed something other than an oil change. I'm definitely done there. I started to call to update them and hung up because I imagine they don't really care which is how I felt about the whole experience there. read more

Let me first say that the guys behind the counter are always very helpful. I take all of my vehicles here for regular oil changes and I ask questions frequently in regards to any issues I think that I may have with these vehicles. There is never any pressure from these employees to fix things that are minor issues. They have done estimates for me, even when I've told them I am just trying to fit it into a budget and want to get an idea of what it would cost. Their estimates are accurate when I do have them do the work as well. They don't jack up the prices after doing the work. That all being said, let me just say, that this place is not a Jiffy Lube. These guys are REAL certified mechanics. So if you are expecting them to get your oil change done in 15 minutes or less, this is the wrong place for you. If you want to establish a relationship with a great mechanics shop and make sure your oil change, etc. is done right, then this place is as good as they come. I've been coming here for about two years now with three different vehicles. I've had them do brakes on a couple vehicles, coolant lines, suspension and cv joint work. I bring my vehicles in for regular oil changes and I'm always amazed that there price for regular maintenance is so good. They have even towed my vehicle from my house to their shop and the tow operator was extremely professional. So what I'm trying to say is they have had plenty of opportunities to try to rip me off, if thats what they were going to do. They absolutely have not. In fact I feel like they are always looking for ways to keep my business and they will. read more

Service was friendly and they were able to honor a coupon I found. However it took an hour for an oil change, even with an appointment. I figured middle of the week they wouldn't be too busy but they had several other vehicles they were working on. It was a good experience, just very time consuming. Glad I went in the morning. Two stars is stretching it for me, but ultimately my oil was changed so at least there's that. Otherwise, my entire experience was terrible. I walked in and went up to the counter, where Eli was just finishing up a call. Before he could say much to me the phone rang again. He "asked" me to give him a moment and answered the phone. At this point I was fine with all this - but then he started chatting with the caller about family vacation plans, etc. I'm not sure if he was talking to another employee or a supervisor, but I sat there for over five minutes listening to this call that was clearly not another customer. I was almost about to leave but someone else walked out and assisted me. Took my keys, told me how much it'll be, that it includes an oil change and a full vehicle inspection and asked if I would be waiting or would I like a call? I requested a call as I had someone picking me up. I verified he had my number and he said "it'll be an hour." And I left. Fast forward to two hours later, I finally give them a call. Answered by my pal Eli who informed me that yes my car is complete. That it had been sitting there in the "complete" bin. What happened to my call? "Oh I'm sorry about that." Great. So I get back to the shop and walk in. Eli was finishing up with a customer and I stand there waiting to he helped. He finished their transaction but then pulled out his phone to show the woman who I assume was his children. And for a few minutes I stood there while he talks about his children with this woman. I again was "saved" by another man who walked out and assisted me. He pulled out paperwork and read off my total. I paid. He handed me paperwork and the receipt and told me to have a nice day. I walked out and got in my car and looked over the paperwork... while it says there was a vehicle inspection, there was no notes about what they found. And I know for a fact that my breaks are getting close to needing replaced and that my air filter needs to be changed. These were the obvious things that would have come up in any inspection by any other shop I've been to. I turned my car on to find the oil meter hadn't been reset, and the tire pressure hadn't been fixed. These are also things that I've never experienced as not having been done. In the end, I did get the oil change. But overall, the services and experience was dismal and I will not be going back. read more

They were prompt, very thorough, and not only did they not try to sell me all the "extras" that most places try to sell, they also told me I did not need the cabin filter and the windshield wipers changed, that I thought may be needed. Very frustrating experience, they had my car for 3 days thinking they were working on it, no call to say what was wrong, so I decided to go by and find out.. then was told my car was next in the mechanic line up... guess since they weren't inconvenienced having no car for 3 days and relying on other people to take and pick you up from work, it wasn't a priority. I will never take my car back to them again. Peace of advice, if your that busy, stop taking in customers cars that you don't plan on getting to for a of couple days. The workers are friendly and seem professional but they had my car for more than 24 hours longer than they were suppose to and when I got it back there was grease all over the door handle on the outside and when I got in it there was grease all over the inside handle of the door and on the armrest as well as the floor. It also smelled like someone had spent the whole day sweating inside the car. To me this is basic stuff that should never happen when you work on someone's car and very unprofessional. read more
