This place seems to have mixed reviews but I was pretty happy with the service. I have a brand new mazda and it didn't start on Friday night, right on the corner of Belmont and Damon. I was able to push it to the shop and leave it over the night. On Saturday morning I went there at 7:45am with my bike to see if they can fix my car before anyone else. They arrived few minutes before their start time at 8am, which was a big plus. I thought the problem will cost me $$$+ since I assumed it was the started or rely.. They were very careful investigating the issue and found out that it was a minor problem and were able to fix it within less than an hour. Just a couple of days before I needed to drive my son to college, my car started smoking and smelling like burning oil. I was afraid it was something horrible. Visions of head gaskets needing to be replaced danced through my head. I took the car to Sun on a recommendation from a friend and because they had Saturday hours, and I'm really, really glad I did. Hugo was friendly, helpful, and -- since I live about 90 blocks away -- he suggested I hang in the neighborhood for a bit and give him time to look at it, he might be able to get it back to me by noon. So that's what he did, and that's what he did. He had my problem fixed and back to me 2 hours after I had dropped it off. And for a fraction of what I thought I was going to get hit for. I've now had my wheel bearing and one of my belts replaced by Sun Auto in addition to the free inspection they do. They are top notch when it comes to their willingness to investigate and take a look at what's causing noises/sounds. They have even offered to stop by (I live down the street) when I can only re-produce the noise when the car starts for the first few minutes. This shop does pretty much anything auto related and will always check your fluids and let you know if they see anything else that is odd when they put the car up on the rack. If you are in the area, I highly recommend taking it to this shop. They are quick, very reasonable, and always willing to fit you in the same day. read more

Hugo was my lifeline a few weeks ago. I as on my way to Costco on a Saturday morning when the man in the car next to me pointed to my front tire. Turns out it was almost completely flat. I decided to just try to get home (about 2 miles away) and deal with it then . As I approached Sun Auto I decided to pull in. It was 12:05 & they close at noon. Hugo was awesome. He had his assistant, check out the tire, repair, and I was on my way. At that point I would have paid anything. Sun Auto came through for me again. I brought my pretty and newish PT Cruiser to Sun Auto because besides an oil change (and fluids) I thought I had some pot hole damage since my car was listing to the left. They took it for a test drive and called me to say it was the tire that was bad and gave me quotes on tires, retail price. I asked if I could call around for tire prices and bring tires to them the next day. Okay, so I found the Chrysler dealer having a sale and got the Eagles for $60 each instead of the $115 list price on the internet and quoted from the mechanic. I picked them up and had them installed at Sun Auto for $25 each. This was a big Wooohoo! Also, they will not build on damage like tell me yes it was a pothole and we have to replace a ball bearing or something. read more

So we had our car towed here (about a block from our home) on a Saturday night when the alternator in our car decided to give out. The one star is that Sun doesn't have gates around their lot, so you're able to get it towed there on a weekend to be fixed on Monday (other places, you can't really do that). For $500+ dollars, they replaced the alternator and battery. I have no idea if that's really expensive for what they did or really cheap, but here I am 7 months pregnant, it's a 100 degrees outside, and I really hoped that they wouldn't take advantage of the downtrodden and desperate like myself, so I left my car with them. You know how you hear about those mechanics who fix one thing only to break something else so that you've got to go back to them? I had heard about that, but I figured that I'd take my chances and hope that Sun wouldn't stoop so low for someone in the neighborhood who could drop a baby any minute and needed that car to get to the hospital. I was wrong. Less than 24 hours after I get my car back, it's running, but guess what? Weird sounds are coming from my car. Sounds I had never heard before. Not good sounds. Like something's loose or broken type of sounds. Sounds where I don't want myself or a newborn baby in the car for any extended period of time. I wait for my husband to get home and listen to it and drive it around, he hears it too, and 48 hours after we received the car back, my husband goes back to Sun. Sun disclaims all liability. Apparently the alternator tension belt has come loose (probably due to them actually changing out the alternator, hello?), but they want more money to fix what they admit, after a lot of hemming and hawing, is tied to the work that they just did. Like $100+ more. I don't think so. If you're going to treat people like that, then I'm going to take my business somewhere else and let karma fall where it may. Shame on you, Sun Auto. It's one thing to choose not to do good deeds in this world, but to try to take advantage of them? That's just evil. read more

I found these guys to be crooks, and as I woman I felt they thought they could pull some BS over on me. I grew up in the motor city and my dad worked in the industry so I know more than most of those repair men would think. I took my car there and they told me what I needed to replace, I believe it was my alternator and he quoted me twice what my regular guy did, but he was a block from my house so I thought I'd give them a try. They also charged me 75.00 just for looking at my car and normally when you pay for an estimate they will adjust your bill if you have them do the job. Not this place he wanted the cost of the repair and estimate and I have never heard of that anywhere. I told him I would NOT pay the 75.00 or have them work on my car and I had it towed out of their lot. They didn't try too hard to get me to pay the 75.00 estimate fee. I may have let them do the work but not with having to pay the estimate fee on top of the work. read more

I have brought three different cars for varying needs to Hugo and his shop. A friend of mine loves this place, and my wife also trusts him. I don't. Here's why. Over the winter our exhaust became slightly separated from the cat-converter, and was making noise. I bought the necessary replacement pipes, cone fitting, brackets, bolts etc. to make the repair. Before I get to it, my wife takes it to Sun, and they "fix" it for $150. It's my wife's car, so I don't even check up on the work. It fails emissions the next month, and despite having the code from the state she pays $95. to get it from Sun. Finally, i go under the car to look at the O2 sensor, and see what we just paid $150. for. They merely cut the bolts, scabbed on a bracket and bolted the pipe back together with untreated bolts! Material cost= $4. Time= 15 minutes. Work= substandard. Then he quotes a $900. replacement of our catalytic converter and oxygen sensor, when the computer code clearly indicates a lean mix to one side= vacuum leak at the front end, like a fail of the mass air flow, upper intake, etc. Same code popped up three years ago, and after much money to dealer, was told it is a computer error. I think he wanted a chance to get back underneath and cover his tracks with something easy, because once the battery is disconnected, the computer re-boots, and I pass regardless what was really wrong. read more

No star for this one. One of the worst experience ever. I Took the car over for an oil change and also asked him to take a look at the check engine light that came on. I spoke to him on the phone prior to picking the car and he never mention anything about charging me extra for just checking it out. When i came to pick up the car to my surprise i was charged about $240 for an oil change and a diagnosis. Stay away from this shop. IT'S A COMPLETE RIP OFF. read more

My in-laws have been taking their 4 cars to Sun Auto for years and I didn't have a mechanic in the city so I went off of their recommendation. My brakes were squeaking and grinding so when I took my car in they said I needed new brakes and rotors for $700+. This seemed about right, they got me in that day and when I picked up the car and drove away they were still squeaking. I called the next day and Hugo said that they may squeak for a day or two as they are wearing in. A couple weeks later they were still making noise and I brought the car back in and took one of the mechanics for a ride and he clearly heard the sound so they said they would put new brakes on. After they put new brakes on the same thing happened. I called in again and they said I probably need a different kind of brake that would cost anywhere from $300-$400. So they supposedly replaced my old brakes with the same brand as previously on the car and are now trying to sell me a different type of brake that they 'think' is the problem. I spent $700 there and left with the same problem I went in with. Myself and my in-laws will not be taking any of our 5 cars there in the future. read more
