We made a special visit to this restaurant in Derry. We have been looking for quality Asian restaurants.. we are still looking. I'll start with the positives, the restaurant interior is quite attractive and the service was fine. If you are not a local, the street that the restaurant resides on is very busy and it's hard to see the restaurant so be prepared to turn quickly into the lot. There's two fundamental problems with this place. First, the prices are very high. Secondly, the food was just average. The meat quality wasn't good and the flavor was weak. I have ordered twice. The first time, I ordered chicken Pad Thai. Most of it was noodles. Barely any chicken or vegetables. I gave them a second try because you should. I finally got back for a second visit to Sun and it was every bit as good as my first. They have a really good parking at the left side of the building, so I recommend parking there when you arrive instead of in front of the building. The interior is spacious and comfortable with both booths and tables. The food is the highlight though. I had both the chicken vermicelli bowl and the tofu banh mi and both were stellar. The tofu in the banh mi was generous and well flavored, and the vermicelli bowl large and well balanced with nicely seasoned chicken. Service was awesome. We were greeted as we entered, offered drinks immediately and our orders taken promptly. The server double checked when I ordered the tofu banh mi to see if the pork pate spread it contained would be ok - a nice touch that should reassure vegetarians they will be taken seriously. We've been here twice and can't recommend it. Although there has never been a wait because there are only 2-3 patrons inside at a time, this last trip left us with the runs, not even an hour after arriving home. The food is decent for being in a small NH town, but not enough to chance getting another stomach bug. Our first visit, presentation on the ramen wasn't typical but seemed like there was an attempt at plating. The dessert coconut sauce had a tangy sour taste instead of creamy and sweet. I'm rating it a 3 and that's being generous because the flavor of many dishes is authentic but the servings are very tiny for the price you pay. I'm used to Vietnamese restaurants in Dorchester, San Francisco and Chinatown (Manhattan) where you get a ton of food and large servings of spring rolls with lettuce and all the garnishes (without having to ask) at reasonable prices. I cannot begin to express how happy I am that this place is now here. The location tends to be somewhat cursed for restaurants, but I believe it's because the places never do it justice. Pho Golden bowl is closed on Sundays which is when I want pho 99.9% of the time so I was delighted to see this place was open; with an interesting menu to boot. We got the BBQ chicken banh mi, bun bo hue (not on menu but ask for it anyways), and crab rangoons. Truly a transcendental experience for reasonably priced take out Asian fare. It was better than the places in the Asian supermarkets my wife and I would go to in Malden all the time. I have wanted nothing more than somewhere with that type and caliber of food to come to the Manchester area and finally my prayers have been answered. The crab Rangoon had real crab in it, perfectly fried, and overall amazing texture and flavor. So much better than the immitation cream cheese blends you usually get The banh mi was packed with an inordinate amount of meat and tasted exquisite. It even had the paté which most places don't include nowadays. And the bun bo hue had all the meats you would hope for (fish cake, brisket, pork ball, and I think tendon) and the broth tasted exactly as I hoped it would. This dish also came with way more proteins than you'd normally ever see in these types of to go phos. Overall, I love this place. The Thai waitress very friendly and awesome smiley customer service. Unfortunately, I ordered the pork yellow curry entree which Thai cuisine is famous for curry dishes. It didn't even taste like a Thai dishes as the owner, chef is Vietnamese/Chinese. I had to return that awful dish. The waitress asked me if I wanted anything else besides my Singha beer. I ordered the salt & pepper calamari. It was delivered hot but the batter was disgusting terrible. When you do fried calamari it's a must to use fresh oil ****not used oil****as it won't taste the same for the dish outcome. Went on a Friday night for dinner, inside wasn't too crowded but throughout our meal they seemed to have a steady wave of customers. Based on the other reviews, the pho was the item to get! We started with salted edamame (which have a bit of a garlicy taste just FYI) and a couple of drinks. I got the mango bubble tea which was delicious! My vegetarian pho came with a side of add ins; bean sprouts, basil leaves and a lime. The broth was flavorful and the noodles were plenty. They even give you the option to get GF rice noodles or egg noodles. The only downside to this experience would be that the restaurant itself was very cold, we didn't take our coats off during our stay. Also, the parking situation is less than ideal. I have come to Sun Asian Bistro a few times over the last year. Every time I come, whether for dine-in or take-out, I have great experiences. The food is always fantastic. I am a big fan of the steak fried rice, pad thai, and Pho. All of their options are fresh, delicious, and made to order. The staff is always very friendly. They are courteous and patient. I think the prices are fair and give great value. Their selection of adult beverages is quite good as well. The owner is the nicest, most genuine woman you could imagine. She remembers the names of her guests, cares about your experience, and does an excellent job with her staff. Their genuine care for your experience cannot be understated. I'm sorry to even have to write this, it's more of your employees. Rather than the food. I love your food it's great. Especially the pho. I go in to order 1 drink. You're homemade limeade. I haven't had one since July of last year. I made it out tonight to grab one. I go in a woman with red dyed hair probably in her 50's takes my order, that's all I order just the limeade. She was so quick to make this drink I knew already when she brought it back something was off. So was her attitude. Clearly there to just get paid and act like she's annoyed of anyone who walks in. I finish paying for my $5.36 total politely thanked her and farewell assuming nothing would make me have to walk back in. I got to my car and take a sip of what I was hoping that would taste so sweet and refreshing. I take a sip of what was acid reflux and carbonation. My lungs are being cleared out like I just put draino down my pipes. I go back in and ask her if she could add more simple syrup, she tells me while she sitting at the end of the bar with her mask off. "I AdDeD SyRuP" I reply "IM SURE YOU DID. BUT NOT ENOUGH FOR ME!!" I swear to god, there wasn't any at all. My throat is still on fire. It's been an hour now. My drink this time was nothing like how the owner made it. The owner made a point to tell me that this drink takes time to make she even put fresh limes in it last time. This place has some great Vietnamese Food. The portions are good size, the prices fair, and the food is delicious. The owners are a husband/wife team and they are very personable. They have visited my table every time I have gone. Han (the wife) even helped me make rolls with one of the dishes I had. I had one time that I went that the service was slow, but it has improved quickly in last couple weeks. Expected a couple hiccups since they just opened, but they seem to have addressed them. Not crowded but a good stream of people coming in and out- seems everyone was ordering the Pho. I went with the vegetable curry with tofu after starting off with the edamame with sea salt- only inconsistency was the overwhelming garlic salt that was not mentioned but ok. Great experience overall! The food and service was excellent. The owner stopped at our table and was very polite and genuine. I overheard him talking to one of his employees and he was treating her with the same genuine and respectful attitude, a sign of a good leader. I got the feeling that he would be a great boss! I've had all of these dishes before at various Vietnamese restaurants and Sun did not disappoint. My first banh mi was from a food truck in D.C. and it was amazing. I have been waiting to have another Banh Mi just like it! The Banh Mi at Sun was the closest one I've had to the one in D.C. The bread was perfect and everything on the sandwich complimented each other. It has a surprising kick of spice, but it wasn't overpowering. I loved the subtlety of the pate, too. I would say that it's THE dish to try when you go to Sun. I love Pho, but a good Banh Mi is hard to come by. The Pho was just what you'd want from that dish. A delicious flavorful hot broth and slurpy noodles topped with crunchy bean sprouts finished with basil and lime (I do wish they gave more bean sprouts!) . The spring rolls were also delicious. I just wish more were included in the order! I'm so glad that Sun offers many of my favorite Vietnamese dishes as most of the restaurants I have gone to don't often sell both. The owner gave all of the credit to his wife who he said is "the mastermind". He was right to do so! She nailed her cuisine and I'm grateful for her sharing it with all of us in the area! If you go into a restaurant and their menu is small, truth is you should stay. The reason is this restaurant specializes in these items and the cooks only care about making them as good as they possibly can. Will you get a bad played here and there? Sure we've all had our bad days. Truth be told, I haven't had a bad meal here. Yes! When I think of Vietnamese food, the last place I'd think is Derry, NH. After years of dragging myself down Mammoth Road to Dracut or Lowell, I have finally found a place in NH that does Pho right. This place, Sun Bistro does Pho right. From the home made pickled Jalapeno to just having fish sauce and hot oild on the tables, I felt right at home and forget that I live in a town that used to be known for it's porn theater. While everything I've had has been spectacular, Pho is King. The warm beef broth coats out insides like a warm hug and you get that feeling that no matter how bad your day's been, it's gonna be alright. The brisket melts in your mouth, the meatballs burst with flavor and the fresh Asian herbs deliver the right balance of the familiar and the exotic. I'm sure they'll be some "World Traveler" on here that'll say, "I've been to Vietnam and this isn't nearly as good." And they may be correct! But this is Derry, NH. Thousands of miles away from Vietnam and in Derry, NH, this is the best place to sit down. My only reservation about this place if I can even call it that is that the portions I've been getting are quite large and filling. This is the common place for all new restaurants that just opened. As the owners start to see the numbers, I'm sure that will change. For now, sit down and enjoy a bowl of pho and the Vietnamese iced coffee with some good people. Do yourself that favor. read more

Their menu was misleading and mislabeled in regards to dishes being vegetarian. I went there recently after looking at the menu online and seeing many dishes with the vegetarian symbol. Once I was there and looking at the menu more closely, almost all of those dishes are not vegetarian. I mentioned this to the waitress - said she knows and shrugged. The restaurant then seems to be aware of this and doing it intentionally. The food itself was pretty good and I would consider getting takeout, but wouldn't bother going in again.
