I'm so sad this place has gone downhill with the rest of them over the past 6 years. We noticed the time before this past time the tuna smelled funky, fresh sushi should never have fishy smell only fresh like the ocean. This past time we went I ordered it again thinking maybe it was a fluke and it not only smelled bad but tasted awful. This is the first time ever sending sushi back, I immediately felt sick too. The ultimate salad portion was also cut in half, shrinkflation hit here too I guess. We sadly won't be back after a decade of going regularly. They did take the sushi roll off my bill but the quality and quantity has gone so it's not worth it anymore. read more

I ordered the salmon sampler and my partner the sushi and sashimi combo. We were offered the choice of soup or salad as an appetizer. Other sushi places in the area that we have visited offer both the soup and salad but here you have to select one. Food was ok until I found a fish bone in my sashimi while I was eating it. I mentioned it to the server who returned back to the table and asked me if I wanted a discount. That was followed by someone else who didn't identify her role. She informed me that sometimes bones can happen when they are preparing the fish but that she would speak to the kitchen. I informed her that I've never found any bones in any sashimi I've had in my life. When our bill came they added a 10% off to our bill. Our first and last visit to this place. read more

I love this place. I come here probably every week or two and have a few drinks with some sushi. Every time I come in, the sushi chef gives me a different special roll on the house and it's always delicious. The atmosphere is relaxing, the staff are always welcoming, and the food is awesome. I got chicken pad Thai delivered and was very disappointed. The pad Thai had a maraschino cherry and a ton of lime juice on it. The lime isn't out of the ordinary for pad Thai but the cherry was. Together they coated everything in sweet fruit flavors instead of the savory taste I would normally associate with chicken pad Thai. I will not be giving this place another chance. read more

I've been here probably over a hundred times now. Service could be friendlier. During the lunch service I often find myself thinking the music is not quite right for the venue, should be something upbeat, easy for all to listen to, and not too high a volume. There are some great restaurant playlists online. The food is really good most of the time. But like any business, I have seem them through some off-days. Here's some feedback I have for the business from those not so great experiences. I suspect some of the food storage containers and cutting boards have absorbed the citrus detergent. I noticed this taste sometimes in the teriyaki sauce, and sometimes with sushi. There is a one-star review here from about a year ago that also mentions a strange taste, and someone I was with experienced it in a sushi roll sauce. Recommend reviewing cleaning practices by staff, switching detergent for something approved for porous services, and checking all the plastic and wood being used, as it may be impossible to get the previous detergent out. On Hibachi lunch takeout, meats are sometimes overcooked. There are other reviews with this complaint. Take-out hibachi lunch is the only time I experience this issue, when I order in-house or a teriyaki lunch the meats are perfectly cooked. Really really unpleasant to get rubbery shrimp. One time I got a piece of metal wire like from a pot scrubber in my spicy tuna roll, but that was a one-time thing. Overall, my experiences here have been positive and I'll continue to be a return customer. read more

Hibachi is comparable and even better to masa in Manchester but without the fire and utensil tossing show which I don't particularly care for especially the force of alcohol consumption even after you say no. Nothing against masa, their food is good just not my cup of tea and after I found sumo I haven't been back to masa Sumo is where it's at for hibachi read more

My friend and I had dinner at Sumo Sushi recently. The place was renovated into a nice modern casual Japanese restaurant and bar (still in the same spot in the restaurant). The far space at the Hood Commons was formerly occupied by other Asian/Chinese restaurants including Derry Kang's Kitchen and Power Wok. Anyways, upon arrival we were promptly seated and given the option of being seated in the bar area or dining room, we chose the latter being seated in a booth. The waitress arrived shortly after being seated and took our drink order. We placed our dinner order when the drinks arrived, Green Tea ($1.29), Hot Sake ($8.50) and ice waters. For an appetizer, the Calamari ($8.95) consisted of rings and tentacles lightly fried in tempura batter and served with sweet & sour sauce for dipping. The calamari presentation looked good, but the calamari was very chewy and rubbery. Next the hot miso soup and clear soup (with mushrooms & onion) came out, both pretty good. The side salad had crisp iceberg lettuce, red cabbage with a tangy ginger dressing, standard type. For dinner, my friend ordered the Sashimi Deluxe ($21.95) which was presented in a big bowl filled with 16 assorted pieces of raw fish on top of crushed ice, shredded radish garnish, lemon slice, and a fresh flower. He thought his sashimi was pretty decent, middle of the road. I ordered the Hibachi Chicken & Salmon Dinner ($18.95) which was a generous portion of food with pieces of tender chicken breast teriyaki, grilled salmon teriyaki, fried rice (with traces of egg), and mixed fresh vegetables. The taste of the food was slightly salty, but otherwise a good dinner. There is no hibachi grill in the dining room here, hibachi meals cooked in the kitchen. For dessert, the Banana Tempura with Ice Cream ($5.95) consisted of 5 banana pieces lightly fried in tempura batter, topped with chocolate syrup, whipped cream and cherry, and a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. This dessert was pretty good, best part of the meal, IMO. Overall, the food we had for dinner was pretty decent for the most part. The service here was acceptable with prompt delivery of the food to our table. I was given a refill on the green tea once, but no refills on the ice water. Sumo Sushi is currently the only sushi and Japanese restaurant in Derry, which is a good place to go for Japanese fare if you happen to live close by. I agree with Darren that I also can't see people making this place a destination restaurant, which is kind of similar to the smaller Jay House in Londonderry. For the best sushi in the area, I make the drive to Dynamite Sushi in Hudson and also Masa Japanese Steakhouse in Manchester for a fun hibachi dinner. . read more

Derry finally has the sushi place it deserves. I visited Sumo about a week ago on a whim and a prayer. It occupies the space of an old Chinese restaurant that had some notorious health violations and it's hard not to take that experience in with you. Sumo sushi is tucked away deep inside the Hood Commons Plaza near Shaw's and a froyo place (it's a little hard to find if you never visited the area, make sure to check Maps before you go). Dark (almost black) wood floors and booths are set against a relatively minimalist style of decor. The lighting over the booths is set off by shades of various colors which gives the place a clean, cozy ambiance. There is both a bar and a sushi bar. The sushi was excellent. We had the Fantasy roll and the Spider roll with a side of crab rangoon (pictures attached). My only complaint was that the rice could be a little more firm. The meal was nicely complimented with a saki-martini (something that I would normally never order but was compelled to after reading the description). The drink was pleasantly unsweet and very refreshing. The service was very cordial and attentive. Sumo will probably become my regular sushi place if they keep up this level of quality. read more

This spot is an amazing place for cheap sushi and fast service. The inside is clean and nicely decorated. I got the spicy tuna which was absolutely amazing and the fried rice is to die for . The only issue that is withholding me from giving it the full five was that the staff seemed very full of attitude. I even saw my waitress roll her eyes when I asked for an extra side of spicy Mayo! Finally! A sushi place close to home. We did take out and tried the seaweed salad, pork gyoza, spicy salmon roll, spicy, find roll, eel and avo roll, and the Derry roll. The seaweed salad and pork gyoza were standard and as expected. What I didn't like was that they served the seaweed over some bulky hunks of iceberg. So the salad looked deceptively large at first. The eel roll was as expected and quite good. The spicy salmon and tuna rooms were decent. The fish was chopped quite fine and mixed with such mayo. It was hard to tell the difference between the two rolls. The Derry roll was a shrimp tempura roll topped with what looked to be shredded imitation crab meat. The inside if the restaurant has been completely renovated and upgraded from the Chinese restaurant that was there previously. The ambiance is quite nice and modern. All in all I'm excited that there is a sushi place so cloae to us and we look forward to trying more of their menu. read more

So far this place just seems OK. I have been twice now and it is only for the sushi, so that is what my review is on. So the rolls are OK but I feel like they're very stingy with the fish. Example: I ordered a spicy tuna roll. The inside was made up of tuna, spicy mayo, and tempura crunchies. Usually I feel like this combination works, but there is an excessive amount of the tempura and not nearly enough fish. The ratio was way off. I went back again and I got the red dragon roll, which is filled with spicy tuna on the inside and then topped with tuna sashimi and avocado. I found it to be true in this one as well except worse, I could barely even detect tuna inside the role, very disappointing. Based on these two experiences I would go to the place down the road, it's a farther drive but their sushi is superior. read more

Excellent place to eat! The food, the presentation and service is five stars all the way around! The staff is friendly and very efficient. The interior is very nice too. My family has eaten at Sumo Sushi twice in the past eight days and we'll be back again soon! Today my husband had the chicken teriyaki dinner and I had the beef teriyaki. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. My mother in law (who is 91) said she wasn't that hungry before we ordered. She got the dumpling soup. She ate it all! Next time we plan trying something different - like one of the hibachi combo dinners. We have found a new favorite restaurant. I ordered the pad Thai and after two bites sent it back because it had a strange and concerning taste. Ordered a sushi roll instead that was mediocre. Charged for all of it. I've been in the service industry for many years and have never witnessed a customer paying for a dish that was sent back. Bad customer service all around. read more
