DO NOT BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY that they pressure you into purchasing! Bought a 2017 vehicle from them in 2018 I purchased the extended warranty becuase I was told it covered almost everything except for tires and brake pads. I even purchased the highest grade warranty. Here I am 3 years later with a total of 84,000 miles on my car and the valve burnt out and the cylinder head and valves need to be replaced. Only for the extended warranty company to say nope they don't fix it due to a value issue. Even tho the first page of the extended warranty that the finance department shows you, says it covers it. I'm a single mother of 2 kids 1 which has special needs. I opened a nail studio right before the pandemic started only to be shut down the whole year. I'm out $20,000 cash that was paid for the vehicle, $1,800 for an extended warranty and left with a car 3 years later that need $4,500 worth of work. I was completely scammed and lied to by this dealership only to make more money. read more

So far so good.... I take my Subaru here for regular oil changes and required maintenance. The area is not the best... but this dealership is pretty convenient, consistent and very friendly. The thing I really appreciated was that they offer Lyft for transportation while you wait to and from where you want to go. Overall pretty impressed by this dealership. So far it's probably the best Subaru dealership in San Diego for service and creature comforts like coffee etc.... but selection of cars for doesn't seem that expansive. read more

I talked to Rick over phone and through emails and I told him exactly what lease terms and the rate I'm looking for. He told me he can make it happen and he won't waste my time if I go to the dealership. I drive 30 minutes to El Cajon to sign the deal. He gives me some paperwork with quotes that are completely different from what we discussed over phone. He tells me rudely that this is give or take and he just walked past me not even saying goodbye. I was completely respectful with him and the way he treated me in this process was very unprofessional and unacceptable. I'm very disappointed and don't recommend this dealership. read more

I had contacted this dealership when looking to purchase a vehicle, but ended up purchasing a car from another dealership. I recently received a follow-up call from Subaru of El Cajon, which I answered in order to inform them that I had purchased a car (I feel like this is a courtesy to the salesman, so that they don't have to waste sales time calling me). The salesman hung up on me as soon as I told him that I had made a purchase, and while this doesn't reflect on this dealership's ability to complete a transaction, it IS very poor customer service. My wife and I both bought our Subarus at this dealership and have owned and enjoyed them for over 9 years, We even suggested that our daughter buy one because she lives in Ohio and often drives home from work late at night in bad weather. Overall, we love the cars. My wife's 2015 Forester has been trouble free and our daughter is very happy with her Ascent. My 2020 Forester has been problematic and Subaru of El Cajon (now named Summit Subaru of El Cajon) has failed repeatedly to address a serious lingering problem: Overall, once the car starts, it is a pleasure to drive. However occasionally the after market security system that was installed by the dealership goes haywire and will not allow me to start the car. After trying to start the car several times and the starter not working, I open the door to leave the vehicle and the alarm goes off. I hit all of the buttons on the key fob and nothing happens. When this happens and the alarm goes off, if I leave the car alone for about an hour the system seems to re set itself and I can drive away. I have brought this up to the service department every time I have brought the car in for service but it has not bee resolved. The last two times I brought the car in and they failed to address the problems, I have wrote up negative reviews when I received a follow up questionaire. Amazingly, no one from the dealership ever called me to talk about the reason I was not satisfied. Before today, I had given up all hope that Subaru of El Cajon would ever take my complaints seriously and make an effort to resolve this ongoing problem. Last time I changed the oil, I went to another dealership and had very satisfactory service. Today, the car again refused to start and when I opened the door to exit the vehicle, the alarm went off again. This time I was stuck in shopping center parking lot for a couple of hours. Finally, the problem resolved itself and I was able to get the car started but I decided that because the problem was ongoing, I should take it to the dealer once again. Subaru of El Cajon has been purchased and re named Summit Subaru of El Cajon so I decided give them another try and to drive over there and see if they could simply disable the alarm system and while they were at it, do a routine service. The service rep I spoke with was friendly and tried to be helpful but when he enter the VIN number of my car into their system, he told me that there was no record that my car had ever been serviced there. He left me standing in the service lobby for a couple of minutes while he sent to talk to the service manager about the problem with my records. When he returned, he told me that the service manager wanted to speak with me, Thinking that my problem was at last going to be resolved, I happily followed him to the service manager's office. When I entered the office, the service manager ORDERED me to sit down and proceed to tell me that they would no longer service my vehicle. He said some malarkey about having to protect the business and the employees and told me again, in no uncertain terms that I was no longer welcome to have my car serviced there. I couldn't believe what he was saying but he made it very clear that I was no longer welcome in the service department. I'm not proud of this, but upon hearing him say this if did suggest that he "F#$*k Off". Obviously I will no be having our cars services at that dealership in the future nor will I ever consider buying another car from these guys. I am concerned, however about how I can retrieve my service records and get them transferred to another dealership. read more

Imagine being banned from a business you've been loyal to for 5 years for leaving an honest review. That's what happened to my husband and me a few days ago. The short story: Subaru of El Cajon will no longer service our car because my husband left a negative review on the survey that they asked him to complete about his last experience here. The long story: We bought our car in 2019 and have had it serviced there for the entirety of owning it. We paid it off early. We get all of the suggested maintenance. We have taken good care of our car, and we've had no problems until now. Several months ago, we had a mechanical issue that needed immediate fixing. My husband brought it in and was told it would not be covered under our warranty. After being given the run around by several employees, he was finally referred to Joel, the service manager. Not only did Joel assure him that the warranty would cover the issue, but he also helped us get a fob replaced for free (something we had been told wasn't covered under warranty months prior when it broke). We were happy with the way Joel handled the situation, however, my husband had been very frustrated with the experience as a whole. His time had been wasted running around looking for answers. Nobody except Joel could explain what our warranty is actually good for, and he was understandably irritated. So, after being emailed several times by Subaru asking for a review of his experience, my husband left an honest one. Fast forward to this past Thursday (months later) when I showed up for a scheduled oil change. Joel met me at my car and explained that because of the situation that occurred with my husband last time, they will no longer be servicing our car at all, and we are free to take our business elsewhere. I was absolutely flabbergasted; I actually thought he was joking. There was zero communication given about this decision, so showing up today was a complete waste of my time. Additionally, my interaction with Joel was upsetting. Firstly, he didn't even take the conversation into his office. We had it out at the service desk outside, in front of his employees. Secondly, he was cold and unfeeling in the way he spoke to me, and it honestly felt like he was just on a power trip. After talking in circles, he admitted that the reason they're refusing our business is because my husband left a negative review on the Subaru survey. He said my husband was "demanding" of them (I'm sure he was since nobody was doing their job), and after all they did for him, they were expecting he would "take care of them" by leaving positive remarks. YES. You read that right. We are no longer welcome here because of the one negative review we've left in 5 years. It's like Joel thinks he personally deserves a 5-star rating for just doing his job. He wouldn't have even been involved if the rest of the Subaru employees actually knew what they were doing! When I then expressed that he should have at least informed us immediately after deciding to blacklist us, he said I was right, and that he dropped the ball and was "sorry." If he was sorry, he could have at least given me the oil change as a means of honoring my time--time that was wasted because he didn't communicate with us. And then he would have been assured that we would never return. He's not sorry, and quite honestly, I don't think he ever intended to give us a heads up about this. I actually think he made this decision on the spot when I pulled up to the service desk and he looked at our file. I think he didn't want to deal with a customer like my husband, who would ensure that Subaru gets the job done right. Of course, it's their right to refuse our business. It's also our right to speak our minds about our experience. If you don't want to hear what people have to say, don't request feedback from your customers. It's that simple! As a manager, don't you want to know how you can improve your business? How does one do that without receiving criticism? Why not call my husband to try and better understand his thoughts? You'd think they'd want to keep our business when we have had absolutely no history of issues before. Joel's handling of this situation was incredibly unprofessional and rude, especially given our loyalty. Joel continuously told me this is "nothing personal" and "it's just business." Well, it's hard not to take it personally when we're being banned for exercising our right to speak. So thank you, Joel and Subaru of El Cajon, for embarrassing me in front of your service department. You made me look like a crazy person when in reality, you blindsided me, so I was understandably upset. You made it personal, and YOU should be embarrassed for your inability to take honest feedback. We would never recommend this dealership to anyone, which is such a shame considering that up until a few days ago, we'd had nothing but a positive experience here. But hey--it's nothing personal. Staff is nice but double check your rig after it has been serviced. I took my rig in for the 30k service. On my way home, my car smelled of hot oil. Once I had stopped, I opened hood to find spilled brake fluid all over the place. Fluid was dripping off master cylinder, hoses, and brake lines. The fluid is replaced at 30k miles but did the tech even attempt to just dump the fluid into the master cylinder?!? Brake fluid is corrosive to paint finish, so it blows me away the tech just made such a mess. Luckily a few days ago I received an email from Subaru of America wanting me to rate this shop. Will be interesting to see what comes of it after I let them know of this experience. read more

I am writing about the service dept. I came in for maintenance on my new Subaru. They take pictures of your car when you first arrive. All went well until I got home and noticed a deep scratch on the drivers side rear rim The tire was also damaged some. I immediately called and the manager (who never got on the phone with me) said I must have done that on the way home. I am not sure how that could happen but this was pure fantasy. He refused to take any responsibility. If I did do it I would own up to it. I am disappointed. I have been to the Carlsbad Subaru dealer and the previous owners of this business and had excellent treatment. Will never go back. read more

I bought my 2022 Outback XT Limited from Subaru of El Cajon (sales experience was great and no complaints there). There was a loose screw in the B pillar side curtain airbag on the driver's side causing a buzzing sound. I took it in and no problem, they would replace it. It would require them to take out the headboard and replace the unit. I get a call a few days later that my car is ready to be picked up. When I inspected the car, the head board was broken. On top of this, there were grease stains on my beige interior on the a pillars, the sun visors and all along the head board. I was mind blown that on a brand new $45K+ car that the technicians could treat a new customer with such disrespect. The service adivsor was understanding and said they would order a new head board for me. I bring it back and they keep my car for the day only to inform me that this head board was now broken as well. They keep it for another day and install a 3rd head board and found out that in the process of everything they had broken the eyesight housing as well and needed to replace that. Once everything was finished the service adviser stated he personally looked over the car and that everything looks great. When I come in again to pick it up, to my dismay, I find additional grease stains in the car and that my sun visor also needed to be replaced. Additionally, the headboard was not installed properly. There were gaps in the trim in certain areas and when I raised my concerns about this to the adviser (different one this time as my original adviser was on lunch) she brushed off my concerns and said she'd get a manager. When I explained to the manager that the head board was not installed properly for the 3rd time and that I did not want them to do any more work (that I would take it to a reputable shop) he did not believe me that the gaps in trim I was pointing out were in fact real. He stated he wanted to check another car to see if those gaps existed and came back agreeing with me after doing so. I take my car, which had been 95% cleaned up and restored, and think great I am done with this shop and this nightmare. A few days later while driving around the driver's side A pillar pops down (which is a part that needed to be reinstalled when installing the headboard). I take it back and ask them to fix it and they do, apologizing for the inconvenience. Now the passenger side A pillar fell down again and I took it to a new shop. The new technician looked at it and was perplexed on what happened. He said it looked like whoever did this simply shoved the A pillar back into place without minding if the clips or trim was fitted properly. Mind you when Subaru of El Cajon fitted my last headboard and fiddled with those A pillars, I was assured that they had put their best technician on the job - and they still did not complete the job properly and left grease stains on my car. The dealership should have fired any technicians that have the audacity to leave greasy handprints on a brand new car's interior and then try to pawn it off back to the customer. Be warned in handing off your car to this service department - the technicians who worked my car did not give a s**t about my car. read more

Yesterday I service my car at Subaru of El Cajon. I was greeted quickly and warmly. I was surprised to find out that with a major service I was able to get a complementary loaner car. The process for getting a loaner car was prompt and efficient. All of the people that I met today were courteous. They were even concerned about the color of the complementary loaner car. I was not, until I saw it. It was this bright P green color. Initially it kind of grossed me out, but as the day grew on I liked it. Recently I had a recall on my 2016 Subaru for a defective brake light switch and while they were replacing it they did an inspection on my car and told me that they had found a damaged CV boot, a gasket leak in the timing chain cover and a gasket leak in transmission and manifold, totaling $6500 and they were urgent problems that needed to be addressed immediately! They said on a scale of 1 to 10 my leaks were a 7. I have never seen not even one tiny drop of any kind of fluid in my driveway where I park my car so I was immediately suspicious. What a bunch of crooks! By the way they did say they had some great deals on their new 2020 Subaru's and I could use my car in a trade-in but of course because of all the mechanical problems it's trade in value would be less by $6500. I think Subaru's are great cars but when purchasing a new one please make sure you go to a reputable dealership! I have now have zero confidence in Subaru of El Cajon, do yourself a favor and stay away from that place I took the same vehicle down the street to Autocity's service center and after a thorough inspection they determined that I could use a new set of wiper blades! They found none of the damage I was told that the car had, NONE! This is the kind of stuff that scares less mechanically inclined people into parting with their hard earned dollars even when they really can't afford it. read more

So, I was a little disappointed when I had two recalls on my Subaru, but I waited until it was time for a scheduled oil change and made my service appointment. Jeremy Hickman was my service advisor and was so great at his job that I would actually request him by name next time. Jeremy was great at accommodating my request to try to get out a little earlier than estimated, called me when he promised to give me an update, and was overall a great communicator. Update! The service manager agreed to replace the glass...of course they used an unauthorized cheap windshield (non-OEM glass, against Subaru's own policy) which caused the eyesight system to go haywire. The service manager also LIED and said that the eyesight system doesn't need to be recalibrated after a windshield replacement (again, against Subaru's own policy, seeing a theme here?). I literally just got my car back after two and half weeks waiting for an OEM windshield from another service center ALL BECAUSE OF AN OIL CHANGE. Next time do the right thing and replace parts that YOU BROKE with OEM parts and maybe you won't have to pay another dealership to clean up your mess. These guys literally cannot be trusted with even the most basic repairs. read more

I have never had worst service In my life. The El Cajon dealership if filled with crooks. I purchased a forester from them summer of 2022 and they lied and made me get the windshield protection plan. After confronting them, they offered to refund me. After calling them at least once a month in the past year and a half, dealing with various managers and employees whom do not call me back nor have problem solving abilities I still have not received my refund even though I have documents and emails stating they would. I even spoke with a district manager for a period of time whom promised to help me. She eventually stopped responding and said she quit. Absolute crooks who steal. read more

Subaru of El Cajon drives me nuts to be quite honest, I have visited twice before and probably won't be returning. WHY?? Well to put it simple it is due to the service department staff having poor customer service. And to be honest I only receive dirty looks, eye rolls, or get treated indifferently from the female service department staff (more specifically skinny blonde female & a mexican lady). SOO...I was just expecting concerns I had about my car (hoping she could include it in her notes) and these ladies just could care less. When I asked questions about my tire pressure one lady replied to my concerns my saying "yeah we do that anyway" (while rolling her eyes and scolding). Hands down the worst decision I've made. I went in to get an appraisal... they took the keys and would not give them back although I asked multiple times. This was not only the sales rep but the general manager. I would recommend women go to any other dealership other than this one. I walked out losing thousands of dollars because they refused to let me leave without making a purchase. I should have listened to the other reviews here which warned how unethical this company is. Horrible experience. First off, They had invalidated my warranty for putting the vehicle in antitheft mode that was not their own because my car could not move, having a transmission blown. I went to them to fix it, and it took three months to complete while still having to pay out of pocket. When I received my vehicle the day they said it was ready. I still had to pay Little over $6k and the transmission is still not fixed with heavy whining sounds coming from the transmission. They had insured that the vehicle would be ready and safe for operation knowing I was moving out of state they are not reliable on the phone nor they reliable in person. I will never return nor do I think anyone else should for their sanity in their car sake. I should have trusted the reviews online before putting down so much money for something that is still broken. I do not recommend service from this location. read more

Have made my new 24 crosstrek purchase nothing but stressful. I have been in there twice now to make a deal happen. We had agreed to a purchase price after tax title reg. We had agreed on my trade in value. Everything was a done deal. I got the vin # and exact mileage , got a loan through my credit union for the exact car and the price we agreed upon. When I arrived the sales manager pretended to act clueless about my agreed pricing. Saying that there was a miscommunication, I was completely lied to, they dinged my credit and wasted my time. This has been the most unprofessional experience I have ever witnessed in a car dealership. I was told "it is what it is you can buy the car or not." I would never recommend anybody to buy a car here. There are plenty of other reviews saying the same thing. Geeze this place is a disaster! From car sales to service to the parts department. Must have terrible management that trickles down! I tried to buy a car here earlier this year. The salesman gave me his direct line and even cell phone. I called and texted and left messages... no call back ever. I was paying cash and doing a trade in, should've been the easiest 1.5 hour sale of his life. Clearly no time for me to spend my money though. Fast forward to months later after I have purchased a new Subaru from Frank Subaru in National City (amazing dealership) I needed service done on my car and live near this dealership in El Cajon. They tell me at service that a simple part to replace that's not under warranty will take 2 mechanic flag hours plus the part for a total of $200. I call Frank Subaru and they said half of that! I ended up getting the part ordered at Subaru El Cajon and figured I could do it myself. The parts guy orders the part and says a few days. Here it is weeks later, no call. Luckily I didn't have to pay or put down a deposit for the cheaper part! Even ordering parts and calling customers is hard for this dealership. I ended up finding a generic rubber hose part for $3.99 and doing the fix on my own for my windshield wipers, took me 15 min and under $5. Subaru of El Cajon wanted nearly $200. What a joke this place is. From now on I'll only drive to National City to trust Frank Subaru who is responsive, professional and on top of their stuff! read more

I've purchased 2 cars from Subaru of El Cajon, and I can say things have changed quite a bit since I purchased my first Subaru 16 years ago. Back then I would have rated them a 5 star, but today, the atmosphere in sales has turned more predatory and sketchy. It basically boils down to how wiling you are to haggle and if you enjoy that sort of thing, which I don't in particular. I came in to the dealership with a particular 2019 WRX Limited in mind, and had a TrueCar price that I felt seemed reasonable. When I arrived, I found that the Limited they had in stock had undergone some additional modifications at the dealership, so I needed to adjust my math a bit to come to a fair price. I dealt with Tony, who was very friendly and the only reason this review didn't get 1 star. But once the car talk was done and it was time to buy, I began to deal with the sales manager. His initial offer was insanely high, and I feel bad for anyone who hates to haggle and accepts the first offer they're given (we're talking multiple thousands over MSRP high). We continued to bargain, and all the typical high-pressure sales tactics were employed in order to get me to buy the car that day. And one pet peeve of mine was he spoke in terms of monthly payments instead of total cost for the car, that old trick to obfuscate the value and trick you into paying more than you need to. Eventually I walked out with a somewhat reasonable deal; honestly if I had more time to do the math I could have saved a few hundred bucks probably, but the sales manager took every opportunity to try and prevent that. So buyer beware! It's a shame, to sully the reputation of a quality car company with such a terrible buying experience.
