i was initially thrilled when a friend suggested this restaurant. having moved from Dallas recently, i had been searching for a quality handroll spot for some time. i thought i had prepared myself for the sticker shock in advance, noting that a simple salmon temaki was marked up four times more than in other major US cities i have visited. i figured each roll might come as a set of 2, or perhaps was heftier than a typical roll. nope...see attached photo LOL. i also ordered an onigiri. while both were absolutely delicious, they were not filling. and i truly did not want to order another $22+ temaki, so i left starving. although the service here was impeccable, and the ambience vibey, the juice just isn't worth the squeeze

What a great experience!!! In the love of everything Asian....this food was soooo good and fresh. Ok we did a walk in on a Thursday evening and it wasn't packed at all. We were seated at the bar. (It's mostly bar seating) Our waitress greeted us quickly and went over the specials and the menu. Made some suggestions on how to order and gave us space to peruse the options. She stopped in moments later to see if we had questions and provide any assistance we may have needed. For drinks we had mizu (water) and a Chu Hi cocktail which is a ginger shochi and sparkling yuzu juice (lemon). Such a refreshing beverage. For an appetizer we gave the salmon sashimi a try. It was so cute and petite (seriously Asian style). Lol. But wow what great flavor!!! On to the temaki (hand roll). If you're afraid to try the raw fish go with a vegan friendly roll. Might I suggest the shiitake temaki. It was soooooo good and flavorful. It's like it had magical shiitake inside. Lol. So good I had 3! Hey don't judge me! We also tried the kyurizuke and salmon temaki and both were great but that shiitake was hands down our favorite of the evening! I can't wait to return. As a reminder sushi in general isn't cheap so be prepared. It's all so very worth it. Hats off to the chef and owner Jacqueline. #chefskiss

I was looking for a new-to-me sushi restaurant - new year, new sushi - but Sukeban left me disappointed. The location is perfect for me, as I love the riverbend, but that's kind of where the high point lies. My husband and I parked across the street on Oak, paid the meter, and made our way inside. We were welcomed and shown to our seats at the bar area. No tables available - this is a counter seating concept. No good for conversation with friends, business associates or family members. The menus were on the bar and I was surprised that hand rolls were really the only offered entrees. It was lunchtime and I was hungry. As very few of the hand roll ingredients were familiar to me, the server/hostess answered the questions I had about the menu items. I got tired of asking questions. I felt dumb and like a bother, so I just shut my mouth and moved on. The server/hostess explained that each handroll would be equal to a sushi roll in size and quantity, and that they could not be cut by the sushi chef so my husband and I could just take turns biting into them. Seriously? I'm still so confused. Thank goodness I was having lunch with my husband because I certainly wouldn't eat after anyone else. Gross. We initially ordered 3 rolls - Blue crab - super smushed crab - and not like snow crab. More like blue crab after you pick it, but imagine it all smushed and gray. Blue fin Toro - it was ok, but not great Salmon - not too bad, but not great These rolls were so small and sparsely filled that we were left very hungry. We ordered another roll - the Shiitake. It was by far our favorite of the four, but unfortunately it was extremely salty. The prices are outrageous. We had the four rolls mentioned and stuck with tap water. Our bill was 85.90. Keep in mind that the total includes the 18% gratuity that is added to all checks. I've attached a pic. Sooooo, prices are high, flavors weren't great, portions were small, no tables, so no conversation. If the sushi chef had been near us and we could have seen him work, maybe, but that wasn't the case. We were seated in the last two seats on the left and he was working at the far right section of the bar. We were literally the only two customers the entire time we were there. Pluses: friendly service, very clean restaurant, lovely decor, cool location We headed back to the office to raid the pantry for something else to eat.

Love love love this place!!!! Not sushi but hand rolls are their specialty. The service was on point too...very friendly and knowledgeable. I had the blue crab hand roll, scallop hand roll and blue toro hand roll. I had a delicious sake too. The sorbet for dessert was so divine!!!! Perfect cap to a fantastic dinner. I definitely wanna go back...they have something called the Gatsby roll and it's $100 and I def wanna save up for it. Great place! Check them out!!!!

A fancy expensive spot for really fresh seafood! I went at a really late hour near closing and thus a few popular items were sold out. I appreciated this though, as it really showed me how fresh their stock is. Their items won't always be the same day to day, depending on what they get in their shipments which is a very good sign. I'm pretty sure they use horseradish though instead of actual wasabi. The stuff that I did have was delicious. The salmon was very good quality, some of the best quality I've had. Same with the tuna and uni. This place is expensive as there's no direct competition for this specific niche (as far as I know) and won't be filling unless you drop a lot of money. This is a dining experience, not a place to get your fill. The inside is small but cute. It's a traditional bar seating but I think there were one or two tables near the entrance. The staff were very friendly and all were attentive and gave good recommendations. I recommend this spot for locals that have never had omakase before or those that want a fancy food experience, not for tourists as there will likely be more traditional omakase experiences elsewhere. 5 stars!

Came here for dinner to try their hand rolls. The sushi rice was fantastic, other ingredients excellent, fish incredibly fresh, and seaweed so crisp. The restaurant is located in a small shop on a relatively busy street away from downtown New Orleans but is pretty easy to get to. Service was friendly and welcoming, eager to help you with any questions you might have. My only complaint is the options can start racking up quite a bill. The food is delicious but can cost a pretty penny. You might need to come multiple times to try everything on their menu (though it changes seasonally) and might also need to go elsewhere after to fill yourself up.

Potato salad

One of the best restaurants I've been to in a while! Sit at the bar, order 1 small plate at a time, and get to taste many delicious things in a relaxed environment. If you come with a larger (4+) group, make a reservation because the place is small. The potato salad is incredible. The sashimi is soooo fresh. My favorite hand rolls are spicy shrimp, shiitake, and sweet potato. All sooo good and unique! (One downside--I didn't enjoy the cocktail I ordered but the sake and wine and whiskey are great!)

I was really excited to try Sukeban but I left pretty disappointed. While the handrolls were good (not great), I felt like they were extremelyyyyy overpriced. I also ordered their take on onigiri, filled with snapper. It was just okay. The space is small with mainly bar seating and one table in the front. I went right when they opened at 4:30 for happy hour, which was 25% off certain items. Again, everything was extremely overpriced. I ordered 2 hand rolls and 1 onigiri. The final tab was $40...... :/ the service was friendly and helpful. But I won't return because of how dang expensive it was!

Uni + Rice Bowl
Tina T.

The waitresses were great, but if you are looking for some chef interaction like other sushi bars, it isn't something you'll get. It is on the pricier side. Everything was OK. My sushi rice was cold with every dish. I'm not sure if it was because I came at opening or if it was usually how they serve their dishes? I got the following dishes: spicy cabbage, sashimi bluefin tuna, sashimi ora king, uni bowl w rice, spicy tuna + mango handroll, blue crab handroll, and scallop handroll. It is a very simple, yet aesthetic place with plenty of street parking.

Finally able to get here. Had to go solo and also get carry out. Server walked me through several sake options and let me try one to see if I liked it. Started with the Addictive cabbage and the potato salad. Cabbage is killer and tough to stop eating but did and packaged the remainder same with potato salad. Then on to blue fin tuna sashimi outstanding. Miso Eggplant Hand roll was a revelation and awesomely delicious. Hand roll of Hokkaido scallop with chopique caviar was great texturally. Flavor and exactly on point. Got another eggplant and spicy shrimp hand roll to go. Tasted a pickled pompano mini hand roll as a bit of lagniappe which was a flavor bomb. Enjoyed talking knives with Jaclyn. Can't wait to get back.

Ikura over Rice @phidingthefam

New sushi restaurant calling itself an izakaya. They specialize in making sashimi and hand-rolls. All of which is what we ordered: the King Salmon Sashimi, Bluefin Toro handroll, ikura & uni over sushi rice. Everything tasted delicious and the place has such a clean, modern look to it. Keep in mind, that they only have a 16seat bar top; so there's not a huge seating area. There are some things they need to work out; so below, are some tips that may help you prepare for your adventure. 1. There's no reservations, so only walk-ins. You may have to wait. 2. Scan the QR Code and order off your phone. (if multiple people but 1 check, order off 1 phone) 3. The bottle on the counter is NOT hand sanitizer; it's shoyu for the sushi. So spritz the food not the hands. @phidingthefam

Shiitake Tsukudani Temaki (hand roll)

In Japanese, 'Izakaya' translates to something along the lines of 'stay-drink-place;' and no term more aptly describes how it feels to visit Sukeban for a bite to eat. Located across the street from Blue Cypress Books on Oak, you'd almost miss the place if you were just walking by; it's small, but in a way that feels welcoming, inviting and intimate if you were looking for somewhere to have a drink with friends, bring someone on a date, or just have a few temaki- or hand rolls - and a Japanese strawberry soda by yourself on a weekday night. I've done the latter twice now, and seeing as how they just opened this summer, I really do think that Sukeban has a lot of potential. My favorite item on the menu (apart from strawberry soda) is their Izakaya potato salad. Made with fresh vegetables, Japanese mayo and topped with crispy niboshu, I would go back to Sukeban just to get this again; and I'm not joking. I remember, on my first visit, sitting at the bar and actively texting my friends about how incredible this potato salad was. I've also had their shiitake tsukudani hand roll, as well as their lafitte blue crab hand roll, and both were amazing. I still want to try everything else on their menu. The bar was stylish, well-organized and clean; and the cooking staff were disciplined in their work yet friendly, and even talkative if you ask a few questions about what they're doing. I'd never used an online ordering system like theirs before, but the host working the first time I visited was super helpful and walked me through the process. As someone who can teeter between introverted and extroverted depending on the day of the week, I really appreciated how flexible the experience was - I could see someone spending the whole night conversing with friends as strangers just as much as I could see someone having a nice, quiet and calm experience - probably while sitting next to eachother on the same night. Altogether, this place is wonderful; and in its early days already as a 'hidden gem.' A selfish part of me hopes it's stays that way - so I can just walk in and get a seat at the bar anytime I want - but I also really want to see Sukeban and its team succeed in the vision they have to bring this unique dining style to people in New Orleans.

Blue crab handroll

My first time here and I'll be back. The atmosphere is bright. it's a great after-work place to grab a bite with friends or for a solo trip. The service was 10/10. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. Everyone took the time to explain the menu and make delicious recommendations. It's also a bonus that you're able to watch your rolls being prepared. This was also my first time trying hand rolls and they were DELICIOUS. Must try the blue crab and shrimp hand rolls (they're cooked). The seafood was also so fresh, no super fishy aftertaste. Ordered the cabbage , so crunchy , fresh and well seasoned. The potato salad was well seasoned and came garnished with fried sardines (not my favorite) but they added a more dimension to the texture of the salad. The desert?! Amazing. It took a lot of restraint to only order one bowl of each. The pear and ginger sorbet was mild but so deeply flavored. The miso caramel ice cream was rich and sweet. Side note: There are plenty of cooked items , so if you're easing in to raw sushi, it's perfect. I highly recommend, you won't be disappointed.

Kenji Omakase will be a new annual special occasion go to. Japanese Omakase experience and style, a one of a kind food experience where every course is a harmonious blend of flavors, textures and eye appeal. The sushi chef talks you through each course after he places it on you platter. I asked if these were supposed to be eaten by hand if you wanted to, he agreed most people traditionally eat these that way. The flavors were buttery and tangy, textures delicate and sometimes a small crunch with fried scallions etc. We had tuna, ocean trout that was Similar to salmon but a different shade of orange, scallops and finished with waygu beef. It was amazing with each course the flavors seem to improve. A great experience, if you are any type of sushi fan or even on the fence, this could easily make you a sushi lover. I give this a complete recommendation. Try Kenji you will be very happy you did. The ambiance was fun also traditional Japanese. I'm sorry but I'm not sure if I agree with the current ratings of 4.7 this place has (as of Feb 2,…read more2025.) To me, based on our experience tonight, it's none other than a super over-hyped sushi restaurant that only has a high end feel to it. Service: was decent. We arrived at the place 11 minutes before our reservation time of 5pm. Since my daughter works in the restaurant industry, as a politeness, we didn't go inside until 4:59pm even though one of the workers came to the door and unlocked it at 4:51pm. Once inside he knew we were the 5pm reservation. He was polite but somehow his whole demeanor lacked friendliness. Menu: Even though the drink menu was an actual physical one, the food menu is online. How strange. After scanning the QR code, we were hoping to see a good selection of food items. But to our surprise, the food menu is/was very small. Actually this place's main thing is nothing but "omakase" where if you choose to order from the a la cart section, the choices are so limited (we were here in town from Denver, CO. After eating some deep-fried stuff for the last few days, we felt that we were truly healthy food or salad depleted; just to clarify, we didn't show up to to this restaurant just to eat salad because after all, this is a sushi restaurant. We love sushi. And yet we were hoping for some decently sized salad. Unfortunately none is/was found on the menu. I even personally asked the guy to see if the sushi chef could whip up something but he gave me a nonchalant no.) We still believed this place could do some magical things so we ordered a bowl of miso soup, oyster tarter (lobster tarter replacement), tuna, salmon and yellowtail nigiris. Miso soup, for the price of $10, was extremely small. Also the entire soup was lukewarm to a point where the center of the small tofu pieces was still cold. Ugh... All the nirigis tasted fresh but I didn't care for the sweet sauce (mainly used for unagi/eel) on the salmon nigiri. Why?? I've never had a salmon nigiri prepared this way.) The only item that was impressive was the oyster tarter (not on the menu as this was the replacement item for the lobster tarter.) This was excellent where we could have easily ordered another one but at this point, we didn't want to spend anymore $$ as all items on the menu are not cheap here. We are a fan of yuzu. The only dessert item (once again, there is only one dessert on the menu) is yuzu tart or something like that. One of the sushi chefs informed us though that the online menu hadn't been quite updated for this so he said it would be a yuzu sponge cake type thing. We decided to give it a try. This, however, failed to impress us either as it was a very much average sponge cake, nothing more at all. We didn't order any drinks besides the water so the final bill was about $75 with some change. Well, tonight's overall experience of ours didn't justify this amount in any way possible. There was another sushi restaurant that had the similar ratings with similar location (when we searched it yesterday.) Maybe we should have chosen that one instead. Disappointed....

My spouse and I made a reservation and came in a on Sunday night. The restaurant is setup with a…read morelarge sushi bar. The main chef was not present, but the staff was terrific. We started with cocktails which had fun twists in flavor. We ordered the Omakase and upgrade one fish dish to the Wagu beef ($50). I dug in, forgetting to take a photo. Each dish was beautifully presented and tasty, including some unique ingredients like ginger imported from Japan. My only complaint is that there wasn't enough. If the chef is reading reviews... switch the miso soup with a mini-ramen to give the meal more substance.
