The restaurant is beautiful. I've had the mole brisket and cheese enchiladas twice. They were good both times if a little salty - and I love salt. My wife has had a burger (dry) and the hot chicken po-boy (meat was borderline underdone). She won't go back. The last time we were there on a Sunday during brunch, the music was horrible pop ballads. It was the most depressing music. I've never said a restaurant has horrible music until this review. It was so bad that we couldn't get out of there fast enough. Between the mediocre food and bad music playing too loud, we won't be going back. The wait on a Friday evening is not worth it in my eyes. I just think they are trying too hard to be fancy. It's almost as if each dish has an ingredient that it could just do without. They have local beers on tap and quite a few options but no cider on tap. However, I can do without. We ordered two sandwiches and shared them both. One was the turkey melt. The cheese was cold...no melt going on in there. Boyfriends half had tomato, mine did not...I also hear there was bacon on it... Served with french fries and pickles. I am not a fan of sweet pickles, personally. The french fries were amazing though. However, boyfriend got about 2x as many on his plate than mine. Second sandwich was the fish sandwich. It was good but bread far outweighed everything else combined. Wasn't crazy about either or really with going back with that kind of wait. The family and I found this place through Yelp after trying to go to Rye Craft Food & Drink and finding out they were closed on Mondays :( Sugarbacon just sounded delicious (instant hit w/ my daughter) so we decided to try it out after seeing reviews on Yelp. We ordered, collectively, the tater tots, smashed potatoes, Sugarbacon (of course!), Shrimp 'n Grits, and Fish Tacos. Here is the breakdown Tater Tots - Not too bad, but you can barely taste the potatoes in the tots and it was a bit overpowered by the BBQ. Wouldn't order this again. Sugar Bacon - Kids LOVED this. I enjoyed it but the meat was a bit tougher than I'd like for something like Pork Belly. I believe it's the caramelizing process to get it to sweeten but it seems to be killing the meat a bit. Still enjoyed it and would definitely order next time. Garlic Smashed Potatoes - Everyone loved this. I'm usually not a potatoes fan but this was delicious Shrimp 'n Grits - The grits were amazing and the shrimp were plentiful and fresh. Everything was delicious except, again, the bbq sauce was overpowering. If I order this again I will ask for it to be removed. Fish Tacos - My wife ate this and she loved it. I had a bite and enjoyed it as well but was too busy with my own shrimp 'n grits. As we were eating, the owner stopped by to ask how we were doing and said that they would give us some banana pudding to try out (on the house!!!). I'm generally not a huge sweets person but my kids were excited and I really appreciated the kind gesture. The banana pudding probably ended up being the best part of the meal. It was fantastic. I would go back just for the banana pudding alone. Overall the experience was great. The food was great. Some negatives are that the inside is just too dim. As new diners to the resaurant, I could barely see the menu. I had to turn on the flashlight on my phone to see what to order. Our waiter also seemed to be too busy to take our order, check on us or get our check. I believe he was triple sat w/ the 2 other parties being 8+ tables, but still, it was a damper on our experience and I need to mention it. 100% plan to go back again! read more

Ridiculous owner, I have never been to a place where a family of 5 that was ready for dinner and a few drinks get turned away in a deserted restaurant. So unwilling to accommodate a simple request like being able to enjoy happy hour. Apparently they don't do happy hour all over the restaurant just at the bar and the patio. Which was not full at all. Just had an ok valentine meal at sugarbecon. The apps were great, my wife's dinner was also great and the desert was outstanding. At the bar we ordered cocktails. My wife ordered a martini but not served in a martini glass. I order Gentleman Jack on ice and had to pay an additional $2.00 for the ice. I ordered pan seared tuna and it was ice cold. I ordered Mexican Coffee and the server or the bartender had no idea how to make it. I gave them the recipe. When the bill came I paid $2.00 for the coffee, $7.00 for kaluha and $7.00 for tequila. Total of $16.00. I didn't know Mckinney was charging New York prices. Actually I've paid less in New York. read more

As a long-time McKinney resident I was excited to try Sugarbacon. My family and I went for lunch and decided to sit on the patio. The atmosphere both inside and out was great and the service was good - if not a little over-attentive. The menu was full of mouth-watering options that we were excited to try. Mckinney mamas beware, there is no kids menu. Here is the run-down of what we ordered: crab cake appetizer - small but fresh and yummy, pulled pork sandwich - slaw had no flavor, meat was good but not great. Salmon sandwich - they should warn you that the salmon is practically raw, it was ok but again there wasn't much flavor. Grilled cheese sandwich - ok but a little heavy on the pesto. Shrimp and grits - yummy. Butterscotch Banana pudding - disappointing. Overall the food was good but not great. You could tell they were working with quality product but were lacking in flavor, big time. I wouldn't go out of my way to return. Harvest & Rick's are a better bet. read more

Was excited to try this awesome new place in downtown McKinney since we are in the area quite often. Well.... The drinks are delicious. Most of the food is good. However, they served me canned green beans with my chicken. I would expect at least fresh veggies for a $17 meal. The manager assured me they were just "braised" which is why they were soft. Don't care about the softness, you can't hide the canned green bean taste!!!! Also, hubby's "steak special" was $34!! It wasn't even a filet. Just a ribeye. It was right at $100 for 2 kids meals, a sandwich, a chicken plate and 2 glasses of wine (they don't have a house btw, so don't ask for it bc they'll bring you he regular overpriced glass of what they have). Wow the reviews here are harsh, we almost passed, but decided to give it a try. Assistant manager Jason checked in with us right away, so I asked him what we should have. He said happy hour was the way to go with half off all appetizers, so we ordered one of each. Very good! The hummus was notably great, and not my usual. The sugar bacon cubes were fun. Good call! Wife has been here. This red-meat-and-potatoes guy had not. Asked our waiter, Sam, about several menu items. His knowledge was solid, his joyful attitude infectious. I ordered grilled swordfish with spaghetti squash. This was one of the most memorable meals I've had in years. Why, you might ask? The fish was perfect, just the right spices and over the grill long enough to keep the meat moist and flaky. That "outside" grilled flavor enhanced the texture. The spaghetti squash was enchanting. Yes, you read that right. With onions, nuts, and several other treasures of taste, my palate was surprised and indulged with short bursts of fun flavors. Not only did this meal look as scenery on a spring day, its smells and tastes painted themselves onto my palate and into my memory. I'll be back...and YOU should go! Wait staff awesome. If your into 4 bites of spam on crackers for ten bucks, get the "sugar bacon" app. Burger and pulled pork were decent but for the price ....crazy. I suggest warning tables how small app is. Especially when the hummus app is really enough for a four person table. I hope it's just some early wrinkles to be worked out because it's a cool atmosphere and the wait staff is great but right now, I'd take my 80 bucks to ricks where I know whatever I get its gonna be awesome. read more

Wow! Was this place amazing! Came here with some friends and had a great time. The food was fantastic. The Sugar bacon appetizer was tender and succulent that it alone was reason enough for coming here. We also got the spinach dip appetizer and it amazing and worth getting as well. Came with sourdough slices I got the pulled bbq pork sandwich and it was perfect! Tender and juicy. I mean this place has their meats down! My friend got the Salmon BLT more out of curiosity than anything and he said he was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. He said it would be worth getting again. It was juicy and satisfyingly original. The service was great! Our waiter was polite and very attentive. They were really busy when we were there, and so we had to sit on their patio, but it was heated so we enjoyed the evening and didn't freeze. Go check this place out. read more

The first time we went here, it was either a Tuesday or Wednesday, and the food was great. Tonight (a Saturday) we went here and the experience was like night and day. The time it took to get a table was about 30 minutes, which was pretty good for a Saturday night. My issue was the food itself. Here's what we got and how it was: Appetizer: Bacon Jam. - It's bacon jam at a place called Sugarbacon. You'd imagined it's gonna be good and you're 100% right. Entrees: BBQ Shrimp Grits and the Double Double Burger with a side of parmesan truffle fries. - The shrimp was good, but the grits were clearly dry. I commented on them saying they looked like dry screamed eggs. They didn't taste very well either since you couldn't get past the lack of moisture. - The meat itself was pretty good, and the pickles where pickled with a little mustard seed which gave them a nice color and bite. My biggest complaint though is the fact that they used cheap, Walmart-esque burger buns. You could clearly see where they came from a tear-away pack. The juice from the burger all but dissolved the bottom bun making it impossible to eat without a fork and knife. The bun also took away from the flavor of the mean because it was so processed. The cheddar cheese was sub-par for a $16 burger, but about average for a basic burger joint. Pass on the burger if you're going here. - The fries were just alright. We got them super fresh which was great, but you wouldn't be able to tell them apart from the normal house fries if it weren't for the chopped parsley the sprinkled on top. The slightest tinge of truffle oil but no trace of parmesan. Might as well get the regular fries, which are pretty good as-is, and skip the up-charge you'd pay for the upgraded fries. All and all, the food is good but don't expect the same quality if they're busy. Unfortunately, they don't seem to be a place that can juggle both quality and a weekend crowd without lacking on one aspect. read more

The food and service was spectacular! Our server Range said the steaks were the best around and he was absolutely correct! The flavor was on point and the steak just melted in my mouth. I had to share it with the whole family. We ordered ribs,salmon, and steak along with Mac n cheese, Brussels sprouts, and creamed spinach sides. We went home very happy. I must say I wasn't surprised by the Dining Experience my wife and I had last night at SugarBacon, the GM/Owner Johnny Carros has the "Right Stuff". The Chef prepared me a Trout layers over a bed of delicious Grits and she had the Mahi Fish Sandwich with twice fried French Fries, this was some amazing grub. Ok. The sugar bacon appetizer tasted just like pulled pork bbq on a cracker-it was good but didn't blow me away. I got the tuna on special over green beans and potatoes-it was all good but maybe a little over seasoned. My girlfriends chicken came with green beans that looked like they came from a can and her potatoes and chicken were just average. Drinks were on point though! Go for the drinks and maybe apps. Visiting McKinney for a wedding we checked out quaint downtown and stopped here for lunch. I ordered the Green Chili Hominy which was tasty and creamy (note: the menu doesn't warn you, but it has bacon) and a very fresh Farm Salad. My husband ordered Baja-Style Fish Tacos which were generously stuffed and served with delicious cilantro-lime rice. We sat outside on a beautiful day and our server was friendly and kept my tea filled. If we're ever back here, we'll definitely visit again. read more

I would probably give the food 3.5 stars around average but the service was terrible. It took forever for her to return to the table. I think the food is extremely overpriced. My burger was good but it was small and nothing special. I think it's ridiculous that I had to buy a kids meal for $9 for my 3 year old son. I've never heard of a kids meal being so high priced. Our server, Loman, was awesome and took good care of us. We participated in Restaurant Week with wine pairings. The first course was awesome. Second course seemed to get hung up in the kitchen for a while, so Loman brought out an extra glass of wine. He was quite attentive as was all of the front of house. Only complaint - it seemed the steak/meat guy in the kitchen was heavy handed on seasoning. Both My husband's steak and my pork chop were way too salty. But dessert made up for it - the sheet cake paired with Rebecca Creek single malt whiskey was amazing. Loman brought out another glass of whiskey because it was so good.
