We hosted our daughter's Welcome Party the night before her wedding at The Broken Yolk Cafe for about 70 guests, and it could not have been more perfect! We happened to meet the friendly owner, John, while walking by one afternoon and mentioned we were from out of town looking for a place to host our event. He told us they rent out the restaurant in the evenings. Many of our guests were staying at the nearby Denizen Hotel, which made the location incredibly convenient. I have to say John Zhang and the entire team went above and beyond to make our event special, fun and stress-free. The food was absolutely excellent. I'll admit, I was a little unsure at first since it's known as a breakfast restaurant, but the quality and quantity exceeded all expectations -- kudos to the chef! The drinks were great, the service was amazing, and the atmosphere was so fun and welcoming. As an added bonus, there happened to be an outdoor concert that evening, so many of our guests enjoyed sitting on the patio listening to live music. It made the night even more memorable. Starting with the positives: Beautifully decorated, lots of seating, lovely shaded patio, expansive menu and awesome online waiting list. The bad? It's super slow.. there are lots of brunch places around so competition is fierce. Waited 10+ mins to take the order and then they didn't check if we had silverware or enough waters. Food took a while to arrive as well. Had to get creamer and fork ourselves. Hope this helps them work on the service issues. Would love for them to improve and stay around. Food, service, and ambiance were great! It was packed (we went on Saturday) , so I highly recommend making reservations through Yelp, it helps to secure your spot at the top of the waitlist!! There's plenty of space inside, and staff do come and check on yo regularly. The food is good, however if you happen to get a grilled cheese be warned: it comes as two crisped cheesy toasts facing each other, not as a melty cheesy toasty sandwich! Don't even bother getting on the wait list. I joined the waitlist at 11:00 (11am). It is now 22:00 (10pm) & I am still in the queue... clearly it is broken. With that being said I called multiple times. Was told they would transfer me to the host then it disconnected. We picked a good date to seat in the patio, it was perfect . Food was very good so we are going to start putting this restaurant at location. Owner of restaurant was checking on most tables. Took my brothers out to Broken Yolk Cafe at their McKinney location. They're about 2 years old and have a back yard patio as well as some really nice area in the back similar to the one at the legacy west food court. I got the ranchero skillet and avocado toast and my brothers got the tres leches French toast and the chicken and waffle and sope egg Benedict. My ranchero skillet had chorizo, Serrano peppers and sautéed onions, home fries, jack cheese, sunny side up eggs, avocado, red onion, cilantro, and ranchero sauce. This was so much good and heavy I got very fully just from this alone. I don't think I even finished it. I was caught off guard by the home fries. I did not expect them to be circular slices of potatoes, I usually prefer like hash browns. Some of the pieces on the bottom were burnt and very crispy. I had no complaints other than that. The avocado toast had smashed avocado, poached eggs, and "everything but the bagel" seasoning on artisan bread. I mainly got this because I saw the poached eggs. I don't know if it was the bagel seasoning or the smashed avocado but I felt like I tasted too much of a citrusy/lime flavor. One of my brother thought his French toast was yummy and the other thought the Benedict's were okay, the flavor was good but some items were a little over done. read more

I have to say I am but disappointed with the place due to the food and service. I went for breakfast on sunday morning with my little ones. We were promptly seated. Ordered Coffee, kids pancakes with fruit and fries(both kinds) and Ranchero Skillet. Kids loved their breakfast, Skillet was meh. The red onion topped over powered the flavor and it was difficult to get past the strong uncooked onion flavor. We ordered- CLASSIC AVOCADO TOAST Thick sliced artisan grain bread lightly toasted and topped with fresh avocado, two poached eggs, and "everything but the bagel" seasoning. From the Benedict section we choose two - CAPRESE BENEDICT A toasted English muffin topped with arugula, fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced tomato, poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, and a pesto basil drizzle. CLASSIC EGGS BENEDICT A toasted English muffin topped with Canadian bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce. BORDER BENEDICT Poached eggs, seasoned carne asada, and sweet corn cakes topped with our homemade poblano sauce and fresh sliced jalapeño. We visited Broken Yolk Café in McKinney and there are definitely some positives to note. The interior is very nicely done -- clean, inviting, with plenty of space between tables so it doesn't feel crowded. They also have a great oversized covered patio that opens up to a large, well-maintained community green space. It's a great setup for families with kids who may want some room to move around. Service was also a strong point. They were well staffed, the hosts and servers were friendly, our order was taken quickly, and the food arrived to the table without delay. Unfortunately, the food itself was disappointing. We ordered the Cowboy Skillet and the Smoked Salmon Avocado Toast. Both dishes looked promising but were surprisingly bland and lacked the flavor and seasoning you would expect from a spot that has such a polished look and atmosphere. Nothing was technically wrong with the food -- it just didn't have much taste. Pricing is reasonable, which we appreciated, but overall the quality of the food didn't match the ambiance or service. We'd be open to trying it again in the future, hoping the kitchen finds a bit more flavor balance, because the place itself has a lot going for it. read more

Sammie (Samantha ) took care of all our needs very courteously and kindly. The food was brought out to us as soon as they were ready and till then our cup of coffee was constantly filled to the brim! The Avocado toast was a hugh slice and accompanied by 2 poached eggs which we shared. I have to start by saying service could have been better. Food was ok, nothing special. Of all the things we ordered the Sweet Trio was probably my favorite. The Tiki Toast was delicious! All the savory things we ordered were decent. I ordered a benedict that had a chicken tender and was doused some kind of cheddar sauce (I think). The sauce was too thick and made the dish so heavy. The vibe is nice and friendly on a Saturday morning not too long of a wait, about 20 minutes. The food was okay. I got the Salmon avocado toast, and it was really hard to eat. I'm glad I didn't come with any makeup on because I was constantly wiping my mouth having to take really big bites to get anything in my mouth. No one came to take our drink order. They were not busy and there were multiple wait staff standing around talking. We got up and left and told the owner on our way out. Broken Yolk Café has become one of my favorite breakfast spots in McKinney. I live just down the street and grab to-go from here often, but dining in is always a treat too. The pancakes with bacon are my go-to--fluffy, filling, and just plain delicious. Their fresh juices are a nice touch (way better than the usual bottled stuff), and the biscuits and gravy hold their own compared to other local spots. The vibe here is great too. Inside has that classic breakfast hustle-and-bustle--busy but enjoyable--and on a nice day, the back patio is a solid option if you want something a little more relaxed. It is a little on the pricier side depending on what you order, and the service can run a bit slow sometimes, but honestly, it's never been bad enough to keep me from coming back. Overall, this is a solid spot for breakfast or brunch in McKinney. Between the food, the fresh juice, the atmosphere, and the convenience of their to-go, I'd call it a 4.5-star experience. read more

The owner is very rude and does not want diversity in his restaurant. I went in there on Easter Sunday with my special-needs son. Our order took exceptionally long as they were busy and it came out incorrect. Towards the end of the meal, my son started screaming. We had made it a point to sit in the corner so we would not bother anyone the server and the host were very accommodating. The owner came over and said that we were interrupting his guest. First time dining here and I left feeling a bit underwhelmed. It was busy, but I used the check-in online option and the wait wasn't long at all. The server was polite and attentive and the food arrived fairly quickly considering how busy they were. I ordered the Mile High omelet with a side of home fries and an English muffin with an iced tea. The omelet was good with a fair amount of ingredients. The homes fries weren't your typical home fries, but were good. Just wish there was a little more. The English muffin was good sized and reminded me of the Thomas brand. For me, the price of the iced tea at $4.25 was way overpriced. Almost all other breakfast places I dine at are almost half that price. The food prices also seemed to be on the high side. I dine out for breakfast every Sunday and have hit so many great places for $10-$12 less for meals for two. I don't mind paying extra if the food is spectacular, but this was not the case. Don't get me wrong, the food was good and well-prepared, but it wasn't anything special for the increased cost. Parking isn't the greatest here. If it's busy, you'll be hard pressed to find a parking spot that is close to the restaurant. The inside/decor of the restaurant was nice and it was a big place with plenty of seating. Our server was great and checked on us the right amount and always made sure our drinks were refilled. All in all, good food, but overpriced and not somewhere I would go back to with all the other better options out there that I have been to. read more

Fortunately, I didn't even have to finish my plate because there was a hair in it! The server didn't check on us other than right before we began eating and simply dropped off the bill without asking if we needed anything else. First time trying out this location. I am rating it a 3 due to the service received. First of all, really nicely decorated interior. They have a counter area as well.as general seating and even outside patio seating. It was just myself so I elected to sit at the counter. Not very busy as it was only myself and 1 other customer. The waitress responsible for the counter seemed busy with other duties. She was cutting fruit and stocking the counter area. She didn't come over to me to welcome me and instead just kind of asked me from where she was standing (about 5 feet away) if I needed something to drink. I told her coffee with cream. She asked the busy to get me the coffee. When it arrived they didn't bring me any cream. Luckily there was a little dish with 1 cream packet in it so I used that. She then asked (from her position 5 feet away) if i new what I wanted to eat. I said I did and ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs. Before the food came out, I had drank my cup of coffee. I notice that there were several coffee grounds in my coffee. I waited a few minutes to see if she would ask if I needed more coffee. She didn't. So after several minutes I got her attention and asked her for more coffee. I also asked for a new cup as the last pour had several coffee grounds in it (I showed her the grounds) instead of giving me a new cup she took my existing one and rinsed it off before getting more coffee. Not a huge deal but most restaurants would have given a new cup. When she came back with the coffee, she didn't acknowledge or apologize for the coffee grounds in my last cup of coffee. Also, since I had used the 1 creamer I could find i asked for some cream in which she looked annoyed and went to the end of the counter to give me a bowl that had creamer in it. On a good note- when the food arrived - it was really great. You can always tell the quality of a Texas breakfast joint by how good their chicken fried steak and eggs are! This place scored an A+ as the CFS was awesome! Back to the service - when my food arrived she didn't ask if I needed anything else so I asked her if I could get some jam. She went to the middle of the counter and pulled out some jam to give to me. The jam was kind of buried in this basket that had things like hot sauce in it however it was in the middle of the counter whereas I was all the way on the left side so wouldn't be able to see it. I was almost done with my food when she asked if I was still doing ok. I told her I was. A few minutes later she put the check in front of me. Throughout the entire meal - the only words she spoke to me was to take my drink order and then at the very end to ask if I was doing ok. With all of this being said - the food was excellent. If the service experience was better I would have given the establishment a 4 or 5 star rating. Perhaps it was just a bad day for the server so I do not want to completely write off this place. I will give it a few weeks and then try again. If the service aligns with the quality of the food - I will most definitely amend this review to reflect that fact. read more
