We come up to the family cabin every Independence Day weekend, but never realized that this was a coffee shop that served breakfast! My wife (a former townie) was enamored, and we returned twice more during our trip (though they were closed on Sunday morning), to the detriment of Caribou and Starbucks. Lattes were very nice -- though we requested extra hot on our second visit -- and served in an appropriately sized china cup when requested. Our breakfast selections were consistently yummy, unique and filling (though a bit pricey). On the other hand, the two baked goods I tried were dry and not very good at all, which cost them a half-star. The interior was pleasant, not overly crowded nor too loud. We spent almost an hour each morning visit to chat, catch up on the news, and play our games. I'm taking off another half-star given the demeanor of the wait staff...certainly not surly or impolite, but just did not appear to be that interested in working there. All in all, we'll be back the next time we visit. read more

I have been wanting the opportunity to try this place when I came home! I see so many locals post such amazing things about it and I have to say it was amazing. The ambiance of the bakery coffee shop is cozy and charming, with comfortable seating and a relaxing atmosphere. The staff members are friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about their craft. They are more than happy to guide you through their menu and help you find your new favorite treat. The service is prompt and attentive, making you feel like a welcomed guest. Came to treat my birthday girl & grab one of my favorite sandwiches. Had plans for 5:00. Ordered a sandwich to go at 4:15 pm and at 4:53 it wasn't even started!! Missed her 5:00 birthday surprise and not eating my favorite sandwich. The girl working was flustered and busy and I understood it wasn't her fault, but she went on to tell me the pizzas take precedence over sandwiches. Horrible service. No apology, Very disappointed. Do better, please. Update; we ended up getting a Dave's sub, long time local business, 10 minutes later we were on our way with a gracious smile from the staff. (still missed her surprise though, money spent & lost..) Also, I still haven't seen a credit to my credit card we used, and also received a gift card with a ZERO dollar balance.from the employee..‍ Finally my girlfriend sent an email to the manager (owner?) explaining the problem, only to get a snarky response with passive/aggressive comments like "thank you for trying to shop small when you can though" & "happy birthday to you though". And, when addressing the credit card refund, we were told "it takes 7 to 10 days call the bank" Thank you Erin, you've made this birthday one to remember, unfortunately not good memories. read more

I wanted a locally owned coffee shop and Sugar Shack was a block from my hotel. Good cold brew & pumpkin bar. Definitely would stop again when in the region. read more

Food is decent drinks are great I just feel like prices are a bit steep but all and all everything was good and love the atmosphere

A lovely little road side ice cream stand along the highway from Duluth into international falls or the Boundary Waters. I'm not sure who makes their flavors, definitely not done in house, but they've got a solid variety, plus some savory options. Best ice cream I've ever had? No. But one of your best options in this part of the state. Definitely a good alternative to DQ! read more

Typically love this place! Came for my birthday to grab one of my favorite sandwiches. Had plans for 5:00. Ordered a sandwich to go at 4:17 pm and at 4:53 it wasn't even started. Missing my 5:00 birthday surprise and not eating my favorite sandwich. The girl working was flustered and busy and I understood it wasn't her fault, but she went on to tell me the pizzas take precedence over sandwiches. Horrible service. No apology, horrible service. Very disappointed. Emailed management and got a snarky, unapologetic-feeling response. Bummer. It gets better! I was refunded my $38 for the birthday dinner that I didn't get, it wasn't yet cooked. I checked the balance on the card she gave me and it's $0.00. $38 to Sugar Shack to sit at a table for 50 minutes and wait for nothing. read more

Sugar Shack - My $38 refund. - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Virginia, Minnesota

This was a great little place that we stopped at over Labor Day weekend. We all got coffees (lattes and an americano) and a strawberry scone. My americano was perfect. My sister and niece really liked the scone. It was quite busy with an hour wait if you wanted to order food from the menu. read more

A friend and I met here this morning. The last time I was there we had very poor service. 2 hours and no food. We were told 20 minutes 3 times. Finally we chose to leave. Thought I would try again. The service was better- mixed up our order other than that good. The food? We both ordered stuffed hash browns. I asked for crispy hash browns. My friend ordered ham, onion , green pepper and comes with cheddar cheese. both hash browns were warmed up potatoes. Not a speck of brown. Hers had no onions or peppers with American cheese. LOTS of cheese! She took hers back and I took mine home to finish cooking. read more

This place looks so warm and inviting! This was my wife's and I first time eating here. It was so nice and welcoming, we just had ti try it out. The first thing that caught our was the wonderful fall decorations. You almost forget how fast time is flying by this year but the change in season waits for no one. That reminded me that I should get a fall drink. Thanks to the wonderful service we received they suggested that I get a pumpkin Chai Latte' which turned out delicious along with their other recommendation of getting the stuffed Hash Browns for breakfast. Their is a variety of them, so I went with the Southern Border. I was really impressed with how tasty, hot, and fresh everything was. My wife, Cassie and I both agreed that we will have to come back and try their other menu items. The service was wonderful, the ladies were happy to help and were able to answer a few questions pertaining to the food and menu. Can't wait to come back.
