I've heard a lot about this place in my Louisiana hometown for years. During every Mardi Gras season, they became popular for their homemade king cakes. Also, they serve up breakfast and lunch. I actually ate one of their breakfast plates last year when I was here for Christmas and enjoyed it. During my recent visit for the week, I decided to order from them. Let's see how the visits turned out. For takeout orders, you can call since they don't have a website. No major issue there. And your order will be ready in less than 10 minutes. Definitely not bad. Also, you have the option to do drive-thru service or walk-in. Inside, they have tables, flatscreen TV's and have a desert selection at the counter. For all my selections, I ordered a breakfast plate which consisted of grits, protein (sausage patties for me), scrambled eggs and biscuit or toast. All for $10. Homecooked and really good. And a welcoming staff when you enter the building or drive-thru. Can't beat that. I am so thankful this place is in my hometown. Local spots are where you can get a homecooked meal compared to home. Went in on a Sunday morning to get some pancakes and hopefully other breakfast items like breakfast sausages and bacon. Got there and was instantly let down cuz on Sundays, all you can get is some donuts (which were pretty good glazed donuts) or eat off the buffet bar. My wife got her some stuff off the buffet and I just settled on donuts. 50/50 chance of us returning. read more

The King Cake might be the worst King Cake I ever ate in my life. Do not waste your time. I would rather not eat King Cake during Mardi Gras than to eat this again. read more

Do not get the "king cake". It was a donut and was obviously pre made a day or two in advance. You can't do that with a donut. They get hard and dry and that's what it was when I ate it. Terrible. Do not recommend it at all. read more

Your service was amazing on this lovely evening. Whenever I got my king cake I felt like another man. The king cake touched my stomach so perfectly I wasn't hungry for about another 6 hours. We love this place. We have only been here for Sunday buffet and breakfast a few times. But everything on the buffet is fresh and great. The do there own donuts and king cakes. The buffet has some mains on it all the time but they mix in a few different item all the time. Always decorating for the holidays. Good friendly people read more

I am newly working in Franklinton and was asking around about a place to eat lunch. Everyone said the same thing go to Sugar Shack . I have been twice the first time I got the Shrimp Po-Boy and fries it was so awesome there was so many large shrimp on it that I could only eat half. Best fries ever!!!!!!! Today I had a cheeseburger and fries (because there the best fries ever) and my the cheeseburger was so BIG and tasty I could only eat half of it. The patty was hanging over the bun it was so big and juicy. So yes this place has made me a BIG FAN of them and I will most definitely be back again. read more

If you close your eyes while you eat you'd think you were at your grandmothers house. Good ole homemade southern cooking . My family of 4 ate (all you can eat) for less than $25. Which brings even more meaning to comfort food . Full comforter tummy's and wallet. The staff were all very polite and friendly as well. Might look like a hole in the wall place passing by but it was wonderful. There was almost something very wholesome about the environment. Place to bring your family and friends. Exactly what you would expect from a small town, only game in town type restaurant that makes donuts, serves breakfast and lunch. It was the first time I've been there but I get the impression it looked exactly the same 20 years ago. I ordered a BLT and asked them to add cheese to it. I was told they don't have any cheese...noticed there's a cheeseburger on the menu. I just let it go. I got the impression the real answer was "I don't feel like walking 20 feet to the fridge to get you a slice of cheese". We went to Franklinton to visit a friend who suggested Sugar Shack. Don't let its low key facade fool you! The menu is packed with a variety of dishes and sides. My husband had the Philly Cheese Steak baked potato. I'm from the Philadelphia area and will tell you it was amazing! The cheese steak stuffing had an authentic philly cheese steak taste, the potatoes were cooked perfectly. They offer a variety of stuffed potatoes or a plain which you can fill with what you want from the salad bar. As a chef from New Orleans, the thing that impressed us most was the owner of this little gem. He came over and checked on us then sat down and chatted for a bit. To find an owner , especially one who has been in business 20 years, in their own restaurant at closing is a rarely. They have 19.99 steak special every Friday and a breakfast and lunch buffet on a Sunday. We will be heading back to check those out as well! If you get up that way give them a try. I visited this town on my vacation to see family, and this establishment was recommended. The server suggested I try a shrimp po-boy. Less than 5 hours after eating the second half of the sandwich, I became extremely nauseous and developed symptoms of food poisoning. The next business day I called the establishment and requested to speak with a manager just to notify him/her of the occurrence. After giving him a synopsis of the occurrence, he exclaimed that 400 shrimp were cooked that day and NO ONE else reported being sick; and that I HAD gotten sick elsewhere (mind you I hadn't eaten anything else that day). Every time I spoke, he cut me off and proceeded to say that he did not have time to speak with me about false accusations given that his establishment [at the time] was packed with more than 200 people. I noticed that he had become extremely defensive, and I tried to reassure him that I did not want to argue as that was not my purpose for the call. I tried to explain that everyone who may experience food poisoning symptoms may not notify you given that they could have possibly eaten something else that day and not know exactly what to attribute the sickness to, or the symptoms may have not been significant. Before I could tell him any of the aforementioned and that my purpose for calling was to not be compensated or be given free meal [no one could pay me enough to eat here again] but simply notify him so that their food processes could be reviewed, HE HUNG UP IN MY FACE!!! Instead of going to the establishment to add more fuel to the fire that HE initiated, I decided to write a review here so that other consumers who may wish to dine here may not only consider my bad experience [development of food poisoning symptoms] but to also realize how poorly trained the manager is when it comes to customer relations. I would have never written a review had he had a sense of compassion and simply stated "I apologize that you may have experienced such symptoms, please believe that I will review our processes to prevent such happenings in the future." A response as such would have been better received than him becoming very defensive and hanging up in my face....PISS POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! read more
