The two gentlemen working greeted us with big smiles, friendly, and just not what I expected walking into a bakery at 7:20 am on a Thursday. It's a cute spot that I am sure would make a killing if they stayed open for post-dinner desserts. We were staying down the road and never seemed to catch them as they close by 2 pm every day. Our family of 4 got coffee, London Fog tea, breakfast sandwiches with sausage on croissants, a strawberry banana smoothie, blueberry turnover, and Belgian chocolate croissant. My ten year old said his smoothie and blueberry turnover were "the bomb." My six year old inhaled her chocolate croissant and didnt really come up for air. Everything was so fresh. The breakfast sandwiches came with two eggs, a lean sausage patty, and all of it was not greasy. The croissant was sturdier so it could stand up to the sandwich. Like everywhere else in the area, cash only, but they all have an ATM on site where you can pay an ATM fee. This one was $2. There were some nice picnic tables outside too. Cash only I'm giving three stars because they probably had 50 baked goods and only two gluten-free options . I think there's a bakery nearby that makes all the gluten-free things and distributes them because the last four bakeries I've been to have had the exact same gluten-free options and they've all looked identical . read more

This bakery seemed like a fun pit stop on our way to Acadia National Park, but it didn't live up the the reviews IMHO. The service was slow and the two employees at the counter were pretty rude. When I asked about some allergy information, they suggested I just don't order anything because they don't keep track, even though the things I was looking to order weren't supposed to have anything scary in them. When we finally settled on drinks, I was pretty shocked. They charge premium prices for drinks here ($5-$7) but use cheap ingredients. Their smoothies don't use real fruit, and the "blueberry" iced tea is just regular iced tea with blueberry syrup - it's not even homemade. I saw the employee pump a crazy amount of what seemed to be the cheap coffee stuff into a cup. For a state that produces 99% of the blueberries in the country, you'd think local places like this would take advantage of that. Or at least charge the same amount restaurants do for artificially flavored drinks ($1-$3). read more

3.5 stars Was okay... it was close to the inn we were staying at. Their hours were good and they had a selection of blueberry pie, pastries, muffins, whoopies, and cupcakes (should've gotten the pumpkin one). I got the chocolate croissant (similar to Starbuck's, but it wasn't warmed up like they do it) and a blueberry pomegranate smoothie. My dad got the big elephant ear pastry and a coffee (which he said was a little bitter). Our total came out to about $15. The guy working at the time was friendly and made a few jokes with us. A simple yet lovely bakery across our cottage inn. The lady who helped us was very nice or generally people in Maine is nice. Oh my goodness... The blueberry pie here was amazing! Made fresh with those little tiny wild maine blueberries... Took it right home and plopped some vanilla ice cream on top of it and wheww!! The next day I came back and I got a Whoopie pie... I can't explain why, but it tasted better than any Whoopie pie I had ever had before, it was so fresh and light- But it was the filling that made it...it was just absolutely delicious whipped buttercream. We also tried the blueberry donut... And we don't weigh 350 pounds yet but if we lived near this bakery, I'm sure we could reach that goal in a year. We visited three bakeries on our trip to Maine... I passed through downtown Bar Harbor on my way out of Acadia National Park. I had mixed feelings about the community, so I will say that overall it is a nice place to visit, but only so long as doing so is convenient. The biggest issue is that parking is practically nonexistent. It is so competitive that you will drive around on heavily trafficked streets for quite a while before finding a spot; street parking or paid parking lot, the outcome is the same. This really turned me off of stopping, but my group was committed. I dropped into Sugar bakery while the rest of the group went to a nearby eccentricity shop. They just like to look at weird things, so who am I to judge? As far as the bakery experience, the staff at Sugar was very helpful and friendly. I bought a slice of quiche and a cheesecake. They were both pretty good, but the Sugar definitely capitalizes on the fact that they are in a heavily trafficked tourist spot with their prices. The moral of story is that Sugar is not bad if you are already in town, parked, and have some money to spend on the tourist experience. However this is not the place to seek out the slow pace, and small town, country cooking that one might expect when driving up to the far corners of Maine, so that is worth considering. read more

We stopped here to get coffee and pastries. The shop is very small and there is no indoor seating. They had some outdoor seating available. The shop was very busy and they were short staffed. I ordered a Caramel Latte and a Elephant Ear (bear claw). The latte was wonderful and the pastry was okay. Staff were friendly but you could tell they were overwhelmed which seems to be the standard pre-covid. The shop is only open in the mornings so I'd recommend stopping here early to beat the rush. read more

The 'best' pie in the Bar Harbor area? It was ok and good but the best? If you are heading to Winter Harbor on a Friday/Saturday go the the bakery there. It's a porch on the front of someone's home and so far in our month in Mainerhat was the 'best' by far. My savior during my trip to Acadia. Opened early at 7 am and had simple, yet well made black coffee along with nearly any breakfast pastry I could possibly crave at that time of day. I went twice during my three day stay in Maine and got a blueberry muffin with a small black coffee both times. So perfect, and a great start to a long day of hiking. During my trip to Acadia I found out Maine is famous for their blueberries so I had to try some blueberry pie! I am usually not a huge blueberry flavor person but this pie was so decadent. On the whole, I'm a fan of Sugar bakery! The blueberry cake and cinnamon sugar doughnuts are superb. Tender crumb, great flavor, even rolled in all that sugar, neither is sickeningly sweet. A perfect pastry to pair with coffee. The shop stocks a wide selection refrigerated cakes, whole pies, doughnuts, cupcakes, whoopie pies, and an array of beverages including tea and espresso. While I have not made it past doughnuts, my husband seems to have an affinity for the elephant ears. We can also say of the things we have not yet tried, that they all look amazing. On the coffee note, I was expecting more, but it is still decent and reasonably priced. You can tell the beans are of good quality, but the execution of the coffee misses a bit. The espresso based drinks generally take about 15-20 minutes to be made and are a bit heavy on the milk. Also, due to the time, the bakery line gets quite long and I have seen some patrons leave before their turn. If you are short on time, there is self serve drip coffee in thermos. I hope to be back before they close for winter to try some of the great looking whoopie pies! read more

The bakery items were tasty but the espresso drinks were average, and the second time we went the young man making the drinks clearly did not have experience. We ordered a macchiato and a cappuccino but got two cups of hot milk. The bakery does not have indoor seating and the outdoor seating is in full sunlight. With some minor improvements like a trained barista, and shaded outdoor seating this place would be a great spot in the Trenton area. read more
