Carr is a smaller chain that merged with our beloved Brightwood Hardware in Longmeadow…read more Their merchandise and selection is great, and I like the fact that I don't have to walk miles in a store to find what I need. And all I have to do is tell a sales person what I need and they immediately find it for me. They offer many personalized services, such as replacing window screens, sharpening tools, etc., that larger stores do not. I'm hoping they maintain one special section of the old Brightwood store. It was this: whenever I needed a GOOD QUALITY screw or some unusual size, I could always find it. The problem with chain stores is that items like these are made of a lower quality metal and the heads tend to strip when turned too hard. Their new location is very convenient and there's more than adequate parking. And I like the fact that, when we shop here, we're supporting a local business!

And when it starts to wear out (if your car is like mine) you'll hear an angry beep and a flashing dashboard icon when you start up the car -signifying the end is near. So that's the reason I took my key fob into Carr hardware today, bought a 2-pack of the needed Energizer 2032 Lithium batteries (just $5.99), and saw the young man behind the counter pry open the tricky storage compartment on the fob and pop in a new battery. No need to go to the dealer and pay that big hourly labor rate. Carr did it for free. Seriously, the customer service was tremendous. As I walked around the aisles, I was greeted by three very friendly and courteous employees who asked how I was doing and could they help me find anything? The store is very cool, with all sorts of paint, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, garden, barbecue, and home supply gizmos. What a great alternative to the Big Box guys -go support local !!

Asked the male employee to complete the return section of their form, and to provide me with a receipt/documentation of the equipment's return. Employee flat-out refused to do either. Somehow it is OK to document the rental equipment leaving the store, but not its return. I did not expect to be in negotiations with this employee for such a simple request. At one point still without a receipt being provided, the employee stated to please leave the store, never come back to this store again, never buy anything here again. Know what, I will take that advice and never return to this store again. Lost Customer! Buyers beware at this establishment. "Worst in Class" Customer Service!

"The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways Like a vision,…read moreshe dances across the porch as the radio plays" (Bruce Springsteen) We have a three-season sunroom in the back of the house with screens on the windows and sliding door. When that nasty Christmas week windstorm dropped a whole load of tree debris in our backyard, some of it struck the back of the house, and cut holes in a window screen and the slider screen. So we threw the damaged goods into the car and drove them over to Matt at Welden Hardware. Within just a few days, he called us and said the screens were ready to be picked up. They look great and the price was very fair; in fact the job cost just a few bucks under what our homeowner's insurance company allowed on their estimate. Welden is really quite a cool store. We spent some time wandering around when we dropped off the screens and saw a big variety of products -some of which you'd expect to see in a hardware store (electrical, tools, paint, garden equipment) and some surprises, like snowblowers, kitchen supplies, and gloves. Next time you're thnking of driving to one of those big box hardware stores, check out Welden. You'll probably find what you're looking for, and the customer service will be off the charts fantastic.

Star Hardware is a testament to how things used to be and how there is no room or need in small town America for the big box stores that bring very little value to the smaller communities across this country. Where can you go to get your window screens repaired, keys cut and your propane bottles filled while you wait and a place you can carry on a conversation about your home project with an employee that really understands what you're talking about and can offer real solutions and short cuts that will save you time, money and a lot of frustration and ask you about your family or a local event you both attended. I've been to this location many times and have yet to be disappointed. This friendly hometown store is not only convenient with competitive pricing, it gives back to the local community so the dollars you spend here benefits the local schools, community programs, community sports and clubs.
