When that nasty Christmas week windstorm dropped a whole load of tree debris in our backyard, some of it struck the back of the house, and cut holes in a window screen and the slider screen. So we threw the damaged goods into the car and drove them over to Matt at Welden Hardware. Within just a few days, he called us and said the screens were ready to be picked up. They look great and the price was very fair; in fact the job cost just a few bucks under what our homeowner's insurance company allowed on their estimate. Welden is really quite a cool store. We spent some time wandering around when we dropped off the screens and saw a big variety of products -some of which you'd expect to see in a hardware store (electrical, tools, paint, garden equipment) and some surprises, like snowblowers, kitchen supplies, and gloves. Next time you're thnking of driving to one of those big box hardware stores, check out Welden. You'll probably find what you're looking for, and the customer service will be off the charts fantastic.

Parking is never an issue at Ace because it's located in the very spacious Canton Village Plaza. So, if you ever need a can of spray paint, garden hose, specialty light bulbs, barbecue sauce or wood chips for your smoker, you'll definitely find it at Ace. We were looking for exterior paint and the employee walked over and showed us the types of paint they had and was very informative. The prices were a little more than the big box stores but it is family owned, local, and has everything we needed for home repairs/upgrades. They have two locations, Canton and West Hartford. They offer paint recycling. If they don't have the product in stock, they will order it for you since they are affiliated with the Ace Hardware warehouse; the warehouse carries over 80,000 items. They offer many services in-house such as key cutting and propane fills. When you join the Ace Rewards, you can earn rewards with every purchase. Overall, a great asset for the community.

And all I have to do is tell a sales person what I need and they immediately find it for me. They offer many personalized services, such as replacing window screens, sharpening tools, etc., that larger stores do not. I'm hoping they maintain one special section of the old Brightwood store. It was this: whenever I needed a GOOD QUALITY screw or some unusual size, I could always find it. The problem with chain stores is that items like these are made of a lower quality metal and the heads tend to strip when turned too hard. Their new location is very convenient and there's more than adequate parking. And I like the fact that, when we shop here, we're supporting a local business!

I pulled my car to the end of the building and waited. I was approached by a man who told me very angrily to "Move your car immediately" saying I was blocking 2 spaces (There are no lines designating spaces in the parking lot and I was at the end of the building). He stated he was the owner of the business and if I didn't move my car he threatened to get a fork truck and move it for me (again with my 2 young grandsons inside). He proceeded to tell me he "didn't give a shit" why I was at his business when I explained I was just dropping something off. He called me a "dumb bitch" in front of the children and again demanded I move my car immediately or he would move it for me. I was approached by this man very aggressively twice. My grandsons were very scared about the incident and many folks in the parking lot heard the man yelling at me at my car. It was a terrifying incident by the owner of the business and my grandsons are traumatized by the man asking me what would have happened if he got physically aggressive. This owner cursed, was aggressive and threatened me directly with 2 small children present. I will never shop there again or even approach this business! Terrifying!
