Just built a new house so we are in need of new plantings around our home. Stopped in and spoke with the owner John and he was extremely helpful with which plants do best in full sun etc. Also, the nursery is set up like a private garden! You can just stroll through the entire area and look at all the trees, flowers, plants in their natural setting and EVERYTHING IS LABELED! Everything looks so healthy and vibrant. This place is amazing! I live just a few miles away from here and today was the first time I went. It was not disappointing at all. They have such a variety of plants trees and shrubs and I'm sure I did not get to see them all. The nursery is set up with gardens planted with everything labeled so you can see what everything looks like in the ground and the names of e everything you're looking at. If you go be sure to bring cash or a check with you. They do not accept plastic. The owners are very friendly and helpful. I'm so happy I tried this place out today! read more

I had seen ads for this place for a long time and thought it was a little weird. A garden center that specializes in Hosta? It wasn's so strange when I realized i needed some hosta and all the varieties at the local nurseries were the same, boring plants. We were passing through Granby and i remembered O'Brien and we happily left with some disctinctive Hosta. The selection was pretty amazing, I think the ad says 900 variety of hosta, and I don't doubt it. The shop is unique because it is a house and the plants are just set up all over the property and you can just walk around and pick what you like. If you like hosta, are looking for some new shade friendly plants, or just like to check out new garden centers, O'Brien was worth the trip. We bought several hostas over the years at O'Briens , they have one, the largest variety hostas .The sell spring ephemerals as well . There displays are in a woodland scene amongst trees and a shaded brook . Different shapes ,sizes and the price ! Irises, daylilies , hydrangeassome types of trees. They also have some how to days. Feels way off the beaten track, but it's only a few minutes of low-speed-limit driving US 202/CT 10 in the small rural town of Granby, CT, up near the state line with Massachusetts. The demonstration garden feels like a park. Wander about, if you have time, to see what mature specimens of the (mostly) shade garden understory plants look like. Plus conifers (some hard-to-find dwarf varieties) and deciduous trees, especially Japanese maples. The landscape design inspires. An amazing selection of hostas. Epimedium, hellebore, heuchera... Lots of daylilies, too, with a table of blooms set up during the season so you can meet the flowers in one glance and then go see if you like the way the plant looks. Great advice available from proprietor, John O'Brien, when he's not too busy with other customers waiting for a turn. (An assistant checks out people in on a schedule who need less advice.)
