Better pic of avocado toast and breakfast potatoes
    Charlie M.

We had brunch here recently after noticing some of the nearby brunch places were packed. This is moving to the top of our Durham brunch list. We sat outside on a rare not miserable summer Sunday. The avocado toast was huge. Brisket was really tasty. The garlic cheese grits side order was huge. Note that brunch is only on Sundays. We do want to go back for dinner sometime.

Really a 4.4. This was my second visit to Succotash. I had to make sure the first one wasn't a fluke. This food is so good. The first time, I only had the brisket and was wowed. This time we mixed it up. From the brisket to the fried catfish, they do not disappoint. I hope they keep the special of catfish with the crab, shrimp, and crawfish. And talk about the bread pudding and brownies. Our waitress was informative and answered any questions we had about the menu. The kitchen was extremely slow so she brought more drinks out for us since she could tell it was getting excessive. There's live music certain days which is a great touch. We'll be back, hopefully soon.

After church we wanted something good and quick to eat. This place hit all the spots. Waiter was excellent, showed up immediately and helped us order the perfect meal. My fresh catch was so good , that I know I will be back. You have to try that rum cake before you leave.

Fried Southern Fried Chicken Plate - must try the Thai Chilli BBQ sauce - chicken is well seasoned!

Succotash is one of those places where everyone at the table starts reaching across to sample everyone else's food because everything coming out of the kitchen looks and tastes that good. The Hot Honey Chicken special with pimento cheese was an easy 10/10. The fried green tomatoes were another standout, sliced to the perfect thickness with a great crunch. The beans and rice were packed with flavor, and the fried chicken was excellent. Even the Thai Chili BBQ deserves a mention; it's a must-try, just don't let the name fool you because the heat sneaks up on you. Add in the unique artwork and atmosphere, plus the great service, and you've got a restaurant that's worth a detour if you're driving through Durham. I'll definitely be back.

Very nice atmosphere, well thought out design inside and out. Very friendly and efficient service. I see where they won the best southern food in Durham from Indy in 2025. While the food was good, it didn't knock my socks off. And they're definitely more of a creole restaurant than a southern one. There are better cajun/Creole restaurants in the RTP area. I was going to order the creole gumbo, but found out when I came in that it was a seafood gumbo today not their regular one. Oh well. So I ordered jambalaya with a side of red beans and rice. Both were good but a little dry and I've had better nearby. The fresh catch of the Day was Amber Jack, and I love that fish, so maybe I should've ordered that in a Poboy. Might come back to try some of their other offerings.

Succotash is a bit in the cut if you're not familiar with the area. I almost passed the restaurant. The staff was welcoming and gave suggestions when I asked. I enjoyed the catch of the day corvina with a side salad and potato's. This dish was delicious. I got the fish blackened and this was a bold flavor with a spicy and deep smoky flavor. I enjoyed the peach bread pudding for dessert with a decaf coffee. The bread pudding presentation and taste didn't match but I wasn't disappointed. Everything was great.

Solid Creole place in Durham. Great ambiance! It is such a cozy spot with a real sense of community. There's a dining room without music for a quieter meal, and another with live music where people dance, socialize, and enjoy the night together. The crowd skews a bit older, which makes it feel extra wholesome and welcoming. Service was warm and attentive, and our food came out quickly and hot. We highly recommend the jambalaya -- generous portion and fantastic flavor! The seafood plate was also excellent; both the catfish and shrimp were cooked perfectly. All the appetizers were enjoyable. The only disappointment was the smoked brisket plate (surprisingly), which was quite dry and flavor was just okay (the brisket tasted better in the empanada). We will rather try the fried chicken next time! We stole glances at other tables and the chicken looked amazing! We got multiple dessert (big dessert menu, yay), and the bread pudding was the standout. The other desserts were fun, though they had more of a "fair food" vibe.

We were so impressed by the food here! Me being a huge fan of NOLA and visiting every couple years, I find myself not only missing the creole food but also looking to fill that hankering with local spots here in NC, few have ever come close to this until succotash! The decor and ambience is wonderful with a lovely outdoor patio to enjoy good weather. The staff was warm, friendly and knowledgeable, across the board this spot is a winner!

I got a small bowl of gumbo and garlic bread. Definitely good comfort food. Service was good--our waiter filled our glasses quickly. Ambiance was decent as well.

    Lots of gumbo!

Wow! We made reservations early on a Friday night in their back area. The restaurant is a remodeled home, and the rooms have been remodeled into a front area with a bar and some smaller tables, and a back area with mostly 4-tops that can be pushed together to accommodate 8 or so. It's cozy, but we never felt the other diners were "in our laps." The rooms are fitted with quality napkins (paper, not cloth) and metal utensils on the bare wood of the tables. Simple, but evokes an old world gathering place. The smells of woodsmoke and grilled meats had been tempting us since the parking lot. But the Weekend Special Seafood Gumbo grabbed us all. Due to rain and other delays, we finally totaled six, and five of us got the Seafood gumbo. It was amazing. (The non-spicy diner enjoyed their Southern Fried Chicken, as well!) This being a Creole place, things are spicy. Sad that there's no liquor license, but a crisp IPA was almost as good as a Sazerac or a Vieux Carre. Everyone enjoyed their food immensely, and the lady who came in to sing after we had eaten and were getting dessert just made the evening even better. Bluesy interpretations of everything from Van Morrison to George Benson and off to parts unknown. Dessert for several of us was the Bananas Foster, which arrived as an empanada, rather than a crêpe. The filling was pure banana goodness, but we were all taken aback by the presentation. In the end, it was amazing, especially with a cup of decaf Cafe Bruello (unless I miss my guess!). Tell the waiter to start brewing before placing the dessert orders, though, because the coffee takes a bit. We had to keep from eating ours until the coffee arrived.

My family roots come from New Iberia, Louisiana and I must say, this is the most authentic tasting food that is centered around creole culture that I've had in all of the places I've lived. The food was filled with flavorful spices, the atmosphere has colorful jazz/music themed paintings and art pieces. I was pleasantly surprised by the deciduous meal and so was my friend who is from New York and not as familiar with Creole cuisine. The staff from the bar and the kitchen were friendly, welcoming and very pleasant despite a very busy restaurant. It was also wonderful to see the way they worked together in the kitchen to create such delicious meals. I will absolutely be back to try a new plate!

Succotash holds a special place in our hearts as we've celebrated a lot of special moments with succotash and the food is always good. The catfish/shrimp never disappoints, the chicken is crispy but juicy but the citrus broccoli and the smash fried potato's are my favorites sides.

We visited the Duke University Chapel this morning and chatted with the docent, Larry. He asked about our plans for lunch and suggested Succotash. Boy are we glad we took his advice. I have the smoked brisket plate. Twelve hours of smoke leaves delicious, melt in your mouth beef. Incredible. The plate comes with potatoes (brilliant), pickles and coleslaw. I added a cup of seafood gumbo which was as good as any I've had in New Orleans. My wife had a salad and a side of burnt ends. We finished with the cherry bourbon cake. A great meal. Excellent service as well. A beautiful Saturday afternoon on the patio with a fresh local IPA and a delicious meal. Awesome

I went with the NC pulled pork sandwich. It also had coleslaw on the sandwich. Side options included fries, salad, Brussel sprouts, or onion rings. I went with the brussel sprouts and they were very tasty. My husband had the patty melt with French fries. The fries were a generous and tasty portion. His patty melt was very salty, though. Since it was our first time at Pure Soul, the host gave us drinks on the house (we got Sweet Tea, Lemonade, and Root Beer). The tea and lemonade were on the sweeter side, but I enjoyed both. My sister liked the root beer, which was from Uncle's Scott's, a local NC brand. They also offer a discount for teachers, students, and veterans. For entrees, we got the: - Drumstix plate (BBQ, buffalo, or fried- included rice and a sauce): We chose fried- it was perfectly crispy, so tasty. Couldn't choose between hot honey and honey mustard, so they gave us both, again so nice. Rice was well-cooked. - Chicago burger (grilled onions, cheddar, pickles, tangy aioli): Classic! Enjoyed this overall. - Fried fish plate (includes rice, slaw & tartar sauce): This is funny, but this dish was a bit too fishy for me lol. But crazy how well they do their vegan alternatives. - BBQ plate ("pulled pork" in a sweet BBQ sauce, served with slaw): Probably my least favorite entree, I think the pork was too sweet for me, but it did balance with the slaw. We tried a bunch of sides, which from my most to least favorites were: Soul Mac (not too cheesy), Hushpuppies (crispy outside, pillowy inside), Rob's Favorite Cornbread (so moist), Sweet Potato Fries (classic), Bilbo's Greens, Blackeyed Peas & Veggies, and Nik's Candied Yams (too sweet for me). Ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of parking available. 10/10 would recommend!

This new East Durham location is a little smaller than the old one, but they kept the brick aesthetic and the same jazz décor; it has great vibes, but it can get a little noisy with large groups. They now have a small parking lot. The new building has charm, although the surrounding area feels industrial and somewhat run-down. One of the restaurant's windows was boarded up, broken glass had spread into the parking-lot entrance, and barbed wire was visible from our table. The chicken is always tangy and moist. I don't know what they put in the breading, but I'm like a moth to a flame to that stuff. The mac and cheese is some of the best in the Triangle. Our server, Lanyah, was a hustler! While there, she had 9 tables, and one of them was a large group of about 10 people. My wife and I each ordered A Classy Hen with a Baby Blueberry and a Peach Apricot Shmear. I liked the Peach Apricot better. My wife got fresh fruit as her side, which was mostly just orange slices. This, unfortunately, is the end of any positives. Because it was just Lanyah, the service was slow, and it appears from our various times coming to Dame's that slow service is the rule, not the exception. Our server said that it was typical to have just a single server, one cook, and a busser--who was not that helpful. Lanyah was still busing some tables and when there was a loud crash that sounded like dishes falling, she ran and checked on it herself. It took her a minute to get us water and then take our order, but it was understandable. She hugged my wife when we were leaving when we told her she deserved better. The cook was doing their best, but it took 48-minutes and 49 seconds to get our order after it was put in...yes, I timed it. One family walked out due to the long wait. There was another male staff member-I'm not sure whether he was the manager, but he spent most of the evening sitting in the bar area. He was not seating people, bringing out orders or drinks, or helping out our overwhelmed server. They were supposed to close at 7:30pm, but we walked out the door at 8:05pm and the large party was still there waiting for their food, with the other man still sitting in the bar. We want to love Dame's, but slow service just overshadows everything else that is positive. Until they hire an appropriate number of staff, we will not be back.
