Ok - let's start with what this place *is not* -- this isn't a flashy trendy chain, this place isn't trying to gamify eating by offering gimmicks, this place is not going to change your life. The Station Cafe is a local staple that has built a beautiful reputation between two delicious slices of fluffy and structurally pleasant bread. I've only had a handful of their sandwiches (and some may say that a handful is enough) but I'm determined to make my way through their substantial menu. Each sandwich comes with a heaping helping of whatever it is that it's comprised of at a fair price. These aren't cheap discount sandos, you're going to pay for the quality here, and you should feel really good about that. Today I had the jalapeño turkey sandwich and I have no regrets. The shop is made from an old gas station that was converted into a cafe. They serve pastries along with a wide range of coffee beverages. I always find myself drawn to their seasonal drinks, which are usually themed around something fun. This year's holiday menu was Ice Age themed, but I remember last year being Shrek themed, and I think there was even a Top Gun themed menu at some point over the summer. For the Ice Age menu, I got a Manny which was a Chocolate Orange Mocha drink. I got it hot and it was great! The space inside is quiet, nice, and well lit. It's a great place to get work done. In the past, I've noticed the wifi could be tragically slow, which made some tasks difficult. During my most recent visit, though, I don't recall the wifi being slow at all, so it seems like that issue has been fixed. There is also plenty of outdoor seating if you get lucky with one of the three nice weather days in San Antonio. I really like the coffee here. For such a small shop, they do a great job, and it has become an essential stop for me every time I am in Castroville.
