What a pleasant roadside surprise we experienced at Route 35 Diner…read more On the way to a South Texas Ranch, a group of 7 of us met here to have lunch one Saturday morning. It's very easy to miss while traveling down IH-35 S, because by the time you see the sign "diner", you have passed it by. Although all 7 of us have been right by this place many times over the years, this was a first time experience for the group. In fact, we all failed to realize the diner was even here, as it is also overshadowed by the adjacent service station. The consensus was this was quite the unexpected surprise and each person gave a huge thumbs up for their own meal choice. Personally, I went with the poblano chicken and it was the best I've ever had, which is saying a lot. I believe I ordered this same dish dozens of times in a 60 mile radius and what set it apart was the tasty creamy sauce on top of a very flavorful chicken. The chicken was prepared differently and not the usual stringy stands of breast meat used in other local taquerias. The other dishes from the group were street tacos, shrimp quesadillas, fajitas and even a few with breakfast entrees. We all agreed this place is now on our radar and we are all coming back. A few of the waitstaff did not speak English, which was OK, because a few in our group grew up in Mexico, so the transition was easy. It also gave that authentic feeling that we are in the right place. But please don't let the language gap discourage you because the other helpers spoke English well enough for even the gringos in our group got what they wanted. So owners of this restaurant keep doing what you are doing and if you want to be busting from the seams with business, stick a huge sign in a strategic place and be prepared for more great reviews.

The food is hefty for the little price, so it is definitely a place to go out and eat if you're wanting something delicious with the taste of a home cooked meal. FIRST TIME VISIT!…read more Woohoo! Been looking for chili cheese fries and happened upon a review for this place boasting fries with a homemade chili so we HAD TO stop in tonight. THE LOCATION: on the very end of a string of businesses in a strip mall that I've never been in before, so that was cool. Lots of parking, that'll never be an issue. And right off the 410. THE MENU: Burgers, dogs, Mexi-style munchies and a variety of frozen dessert-type items like shakes, frozen fruit concoctions and Italian ice. THE STAFF: I wasn't overwhelmed with a warm welcome and smiles, at least from the guys. Lol! They should really work on that. There was a sweet gal who ran out our food orders and she was great. THE FOOD: I ordered the grilled chicken sandwich deluxe with tots and a sweet tea. The grilled chicken was juicy and cooked well and the bun was lovely, slightly sweet and toasted. Overall, the sandwich could've used more flavor, like a creamy bbq spread and cheddar instead of the "Swiss" cheese that tasted more like American cheese. But overall, 7/10. The tots were extra crispy and the guy who took my order didn't take heed to my request for ranch. I was too lazy to get up again so I settled for ketchup. The sweet tea was nicely sweet and fresh, I'll be sipping this in my dreams. The hubby ordered the bacon cheeseburger with chili cheese fries and an Oreo cookie shake. The burger looked good and he ate it quick, so there's that. This guy can EAT so it surprised us both when he slowed down fast after eating that burger. Lol! He kept saying how filling it was, but then he also killed a large shake before the food arrived, so there's that. He ate most of his chili cheese fries, leaving me a few bites to sample. Not bad. I order a Coco Haven frozen dessert to go and omg is this thing delightful! Vanilla ice cream and coconut Italian ice (?) with a blue snow cone-like syrup drizzled throughout. I loved the texture of what I believed to be Italian ice. Smooth and flaky, a perfect icy dessert. OVERALL: decent eatery, the hubby said we can go back (LOL!) Shockerrrrr! But I recommend the staff tries harder to make customers feel welcomed and comfortable. The next visit will be telling.

I've been here once before, but wanted to bring my mom to see how cute this place is and takes you back to a simpler time in life. It's full of antiques and decor that just takes you back. We had the Iron Horse breakfast added some bacon with a cup of coffee. Food was on point, came out super quick and was delicious. Would recommend this place for its, food, friendliness, and charm to anyone looking for good food and something different in the setting.

Unfortunately, the service throughout the evening was disappointing.  I don't blame our waitress personally; it was obvious she was responsible for far too many tables.  As a result, we waited an extremely long time for drink refills, whether it was for beer, cocktails, water, or soda. When we requested buckets of beer, they often arrived after a 15 minute wait, and the beers were warm by the time we received them.   The delays became so frustrating that six people in our group left early.  We frequently had to ask the manager for basic items such as condiments, water, and utensils becuase our waitress simply couldn't keep up. Our final bill was $329.08, so we spent a significant amount of money at the restaurnt and expected a much better overall dining experience. To make matters worse, parking created another issue.  The first two hours were supposed to be free by entering the validation code from our receipt.  The code reduced the parking fee to $13, but my credit card was still charged the original amount instead of the discounted rate.  Overall, the food and the manager's willingness to help were the highlights of our visit.  However, the lack of adequate staffing, extremely slow service, and parking issue overshadowed the positives.  Saldly, becuase of this experience, we will most likely not be returning.

He even showed us around and introduced us to his family and staff, which made us feel right at home. The food came out quickly, and the burger was fantastic--but the true STAR OF THE SHOW was the bread. Think Hawaiian rolls, but softer, fluffier, and sized for a burger. These burgers were no joke: meat, cheese, grilled onions, and a secret sauce--and honestly, they didn't need anything else. The grilled onions and sauce were the perfect compliment, and you could taste every flavor in each bite. The drinks came in cans. I didn't notice a fountain setup, so that might be why. It would've been nice to have a cup with ice, but I didn't ask, so maybe that's an option. Overall, this place is definitely worth a try--and we will be back!

I can't speak on the authenticity of this place as far as ethnic cuisine but I can tell you this was hands down one of the best burgers I've EVER had and I've had plenty!! It was a smash burger style. I love my burgers soft and this just melted in your mouth. Wasn't a fan of the fries but who needs them? I told my husband if I come back (we don't live in the area) then I am getting 2 burgers instead of 1 burger and 1 fry! Ordering was simple and fairly quick. The time to receive food wasn't too bad either and that burger was worth any wait anyways! Hope this place stays around!

Unfortunately, after sharing that opinion, the owner responded to us in a way we felt was unnecessarily hostile over a simple criticism of the cheese. Afterward, we also came across other reviewers and customers describing similar experiences after sharing criticism of the restaurant. We believe people should be able to share their honest experience with a restaurant, positive or negative, without being attacked for it. While there were things we enjoyed about the food, our interaction following the review ultimately changed our opinion of the restaurant, and because of that, we wouldn't recommend it.
