Up until recently, all my years in Halifax were spent car-free (not to be confused with CAREfree; I…read morehad many, many cares) and living on the Halifax side of the harbour. As such, there were many places in places as relatively downtown Dartmouth I'd never been to, let alone as far out as 2 Boys Smokehouse and Deli. Now that I'm living on the Dark Side and have a sweet set of 2016 wheels, I made the effort to hit up 2 Boys for a late lunch and for some of their carnivorous wonders when I was in the area one day. Despite it being mid-afternoon, there was a steady line at both the meat and sandwich counters. I was hitting both - grabbing a couple smoked pork chops, double-smoked bacon and some Black Forest ham at the former, and the mixed meat sub at the latter. You can choose from a large swath of options for breads, cheese, toppings and sauces, and I appreciate that there's no up-charge for things like smoked gouda. Twelve bucks for a big ol' sub, and that's that! I attacked my sub once I was back in the car, although I opted to only have half of it before heading home. I forgot to ask, and now can't readily find the answer online, but the meats in the mixed meat appeared to be salami, ham and donair. A true Nova Scotian sub! The smoked gouda held its own against the hearty meats, while a generous helping of lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, and red onion brought crunch and freshness. For a sauce, I went with their "sub sauce" which seems to be an herby vinaigrette, and its tanginess helped cut through all the big, rich flavours and add some zing. A step outside my car to brush the crumbs off myself and the seat, and I was on my way home. My next time back at 2 Boys found my wife and I looking for a quick lunch in the Cole Harbour area after having gone for a walk on the Salt Marsh Trail. Once again, despite the mid-afternoon time, there was a constant flow of people in and out of the store, but luckily the ticket system was getting put to use today, so in spite of the poorly-formed line, the individual numbers helped keep things moving along. This time around, I went for a ham sub, while my wife got the Montreal smoked meat sandwich. I continue to be a big fan of their toppings options, especially the inclusion of ostensibly more "premium" cheese like the smoked gouda with the regular items - without an extra surcharge. Staff guided us through the sandwich construction process deftly and with a smile, which can't be easy with the constant onslaught at 2 Boys. This time we sat down at one of the small, two-person tables along their storefront, to take in the sights, sounds and smells of Cole Harbour Road. There was a good amount of ham, with the layers of lightly sweet and salty meat generously topped with my chosen toppings of lettuce, onions, bell peppers, tomato and cucumber. The smoked gouda added some more umami oomph to the sandwich and having had my sandwich toasted brought out the flavour of both the meat and cheese more. My wife's sandwich went over well, as she's a big fan of Montreal smoked meat. I prefer it when it's been heated, like in the delis where it originated, but even at fridge temperature, the peppery bite of the smoky meat comes through well. The regular white bread was pushed to the edges of its structural integrity with the stack of meat, but it *just* managed to hold on. Whenever I'm in 2 Boys Smokehouse & Deli, I feel like a kid in a candy store, with so many great options - both the sandwiches, and the deli and grocery items. It's a diamond in the strip mall rough, and one that I'll be frequenting when I'm in the area.

We hadn't been living in Dartmouth long, before it became readily apparent that we had to try out…read morenewly-established North End fixture, Ori Foods. Note that anything that has opened since I left Halifax in 2017 is "new" to me. We weren't here for a full meal, just to re-up on caffeine and sample their sweet and savoury pastries. Their creative selection of both didn't make choosing easy, but we ended up going for the sausage roll, BBQ pork bun, and an apple custard Danish. My wife has a big weak spot for sausage rolls, and Ori's rendition of this British classic was spot-on, with a juicy, savoury sausage wrapped in flaky pastry that got a dab of black and white sesame seeds for extra flavour and crunch, and just looks cool too. While I'm more used to steamed char siu bao, the baked version are definitely a thing. This BBQ pork bun wasn't necessarily going for that, and it was still a well-executed bun with a generous filling of pulled pork that was hitting the right flavour notes, although it could have used some more of that saucy goodness that fills a top tier char siu bao. For the sweet portion of our snack, the apple custard Danish was spectacularly well-done, with wonderfully flaky layers, crisp edges and a smooth and fruity filling. A second visit had us coming on a sunny, autumn Friday for lunch, looking to try out their hot food. The menu is compact and creative, with a few sandwiches and handful of other dishes - a soup, salad, and a few entrees. My wife was quickly ensnared by the allure of the chanterelle toast, adding on the miso pumpkin soup, while I went with the lamb. Luckily it was a sunny day, so we could sit out on the patio instead of fighting for some of the very limited seating inside. My lamb turned out to be the perfect cold weather dish, with a deboned cut of collar meat that was smoked and slow cooked to absolute perfection. The lamb was bursting with smoky flavour, and was unctuous and tender in a way that reminded me of ox tail, but without all the little bones. Paired up with some chonky Borlotti beans, it had a very continental European stew kind of feel. Some somewhat large leaves of seasonal mixed greens felt a bit out of place on top of the rest of the dish, but some colour, crunch and vegetable content was for the best. Mushroom toast has become a hit of a "thing" in nicer restaurants in the past several years, but when they're as good as Ori's, it's easy to look past the ubiquity and appreciate the dish as it is. The chanterelles were toothsome but tender, in a decadent Madeira cream sauce on a thick slice of toast. It was nice to see that Ori had a GF option for the toast, and even more impressive was how well it held up to the saucy mess. The miso pumpkin soup kept the good fall vibes rolling, as the perfectly blended soup got a hint of Asian-ness from the umami-packed miso. A sprinkle of pumpkin seeds and green onions, as well as a dash of cream brought a little more flavour and texture, not to mention visual flair to the otherwise blank canvas of the homogenous soup. To finish off our meal, we had a pecan and dulce de leche Danish. Ori's baked goods continue to offer a choice paralysis-inducing amount of delicious options, and this Danish was as spot-on as my last. The layer of pastry were so flaky, especially the corners, while the pecans added nutty crunch to the creamy base that they were in, with pops of caramel goodness from the drops of dulce de leche. Ori is truly a gem of North End Dartmouth, from their baked goods to hot foods, and is a destination-worthy trip wherever you may be in the city.

Ok these guys probably think I'm weird because since I saw on Facebook that they deliver ive gotten…read moredelivery 3 days in a row now. But all 3 times have just been SO GOOD. Firstly, they make the best Caesar salad ever. It has homemade croutons with delicious seasoning, and big chunks of pancetta in it. The dressing whether it's store bought or not is peppery and delicious. We are also quite convinced they make the best mozza sticks ever. Hugeeeeeee chunks of fresh mozza with an amazing crunchy batter and herb sour cream. So good. SO GOOD. I've also tried both the meatball and chicken Parmesan hero. The meatball wins marginally... the marinara is so flavorful and they put garlic aioli and black olives on it, and the seasoning of the meatballs itself is just to die for. The bread is clearly homemade and it's just delicious. Also huge. I couldn't eat the whole thing. I got the cavatelli with sausage tonight and it was also amazing. The vodka sauce was just ridiculously flavorful and the Italian sausage was also delicious, the flavor combo of the 2 of them together was unreal. Anyway, if you're looking for a solid Italian meal this is it. And I haven't even tried the pizzas yet!
