Mary's African Cuisine - The delicious hot mess of the super sampler. Lamb curry is probably my fave.

The menu is surprisingly expansive with a few different types of curries and stews, sauteed spinach, cabbage, fried plantains, chicken kebabs, samosas and meat pies. You can choose between a $7 or $8 plate, or get the super sampler for $10. Being that it was my first time here and I was pretty hungry, I got the super sampler, which came with fried plantains, lamb curry, chicken stew, goat stew and the spinach and cabbage, all on a bed of jasmine rice. After a short jaunt back to the office, I was digging into my container of food (bonus points, it was made of paper and not styrofoam). The fried plantains were very tasty; lightly caramelized on the outside, they were slightly sweet with a mild banana flavour, with a firm but smooth texture. The lamb curry was rich and flavourful, but was lacking in any discernable kick, and the lamb was not as tender as it could have been. The chicken stew was more like slow-cooked chicken rather than the typical North American chicken/potatoes/veggies stew that we're used to. In a mild tomato-based sauce, the chicken was tender and moist. The goat "stew" was the best of the proteins, with more spice than the lamb, but not enough to have you instantly reaching for a drink. The meat was also more tender than the lamb, perhaps the goat is more forgiving to being slow cooked and sitting in a warmer. The spinach was mild and nearly cooked to mushy oblivion, it added some green to an otherwise meat and carb heavy plate, but not much else. The cabbage was dressed in a sauce with a nice bit of kick and gave some crunch to my lunch, not to mention the legendary health benefits of cabbage! The goat stew and plantains were definitely the stand out items on the super sampler, and I look forward to going back to try some of their samosas and meat pies.

Tunisian Dude specializes in street food, with a very lean menu that's comprises of a handful of sandwiches. Their stuffed baguette piqued my interest and I hunkered down to eat at the bar seating by their front window, taking in the suburban sights of Herring Cove Road. While waiting for my food, I saw the very affable, patient owner handle some older, less adventurous eaters through the menu and I was impressed with his people skills, all the more so since I'm not sure they're something I possess anymore after many blessed years of not being in customer service. When I got my sandwich, it was a sight to behold - thin, crisp bread was absolutely *crammed* with beef (chicken and tofu versions are also available), cheese and sautéed veg. The earthy seasoning was flavourful but still very approachable, and my selected level of spice (3 out of 5) had a pleasant zing without overshadowing the other flavours. This is an absolute hot mess of a sandwich, in the very best way! A small side of fries was of the coated variety, and while some good hand-cut fries are always preferred, these were a safe bet and still hit the spot. Tunisian Dude may be off the beaten path, but you're got to try this this unique restaurant slinging some delicious Tunisian bites!
