This place has been bought by one of the cooks which should be a good thing but isn't. The food is good but the prices have gone up considerably like most places but the service has gone downhill. After ordering delivery we recalculated the total and saw we were being overcharged $16. When we called back to double check their pricing we were told they "had a price increase last week". We were a party of six and no one enjoyed their meal. The dish I had was made up of boiled noodles with what seemed to be boiled vegetables in probably about the blandest sauce imaginable, Even the soy and hot sauces I added weren't enough to save this one. The service was really disorganized with dishes arriving randomly so, rather than let our food go cold, we all ended up starting our meals at different times. I'm not sure where they get off saying their restaurant has the best and most authentic food in Halifax. I'd stay away from this one. If you're looking for a great Chinese restaurant meal for your Christmas or New Year's Eve tradition . . . this ain't it. Not sure about the "Johns" and "Joys" giving the 5-star reviews on their web site, full of praise and touting this as the "best traditional Chinese restaurant" and "best Chinese" in Halifax, but it certainly isn't. Having eaten in many authentic Chinese restaurants in New York, Toronto, and Vancouver (or even other HRM Chinese restaurants), I know that this isn't it, and I'd worry for the state of Halifax Chinese food if this is what diners praise. This is your garden-variety (one might say, Canton-Garden-variety?) Canadianized Chinese food, but hey, maybe some people like that. Just don't call it "traditional", "authentic", or worst, "best in HRM". Some of the lowlights: - The hot and sour soup was bland, bland, bland. It's the typical cheap offering of thick, cornstarchy liquid with just tofu and a few meagre pieces of chicken; for $10.95, I expected a bit more generosity (I've gotten more chicken, mushrooms, or even shrimp, for example, at other places for this price). Certainly expected much more oomph for my tastebuds, like I've received in other restaurants. This is one of the things that I judge a Chinese restaurant on, because if you can't get this simple soup right, it can go downhill from here fast. And it does: - The General Tso chicken was sweet and boring. You can get "good" General Tso that is more flavourful at better restaurants; but you won't get it here. - Same with the other dishes we tried, that just missed so many notes: Beef with Broccoli, Shanghai Noodles--yes, you could put it in your mouth and chew and swallow so that it filled up your belly, but there was little enjoyment. The Sweet and Sour Chicken was again, garden-variety Canadianized Chinese food, but it suits some people (like teenaged boys, who'll eat anything). - Most disappointingly, I was expecting to be impressed by the $19 Salt and Pepper Crispy Seafood Delight". The clerk had told me ahead of time that they were out of squid that night, and would I be OK with just shrimp and scallop. I said sure. No scallops came, and for $19, all I got was what you see in the accompanying photo. To add insult to injury, the batter was not crispy nor peppery--it was a soft-battered dish and definitely had a taste of salt, but of more concern, a hint of sweetness, almost as if they had used the batter from a sweet dish. (Unless, maybe, this is just how Canton Garden defines their batter, in which case, thumbs down for a dish that in any other good Chinese restaurant, should wow you with the saltiness and spiciness.) - It was pricey for the servings that we got. Don't expect value here. - And don't even get me started on that particular server's treatment of other businesses in the plaza (but that's another story). Pros: - Um, it was open on a night when our first choice in the same plaza, the Japanese/Korean restaurant, wasn't? Er, they followed COVID-19 safety protocols? Maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were having an off night. If it had been a single or just few issues, I would've given them a chance at redemption. But overall, we wouldn't order from them again, and would never recommend this restaurant. Go there if you happen to be *right* in the plaza and are *starving* and the other places are closed (like, even the Guardian Pharmacy isn't open to offer a bag of chips or a candy bar). Go there if you're the type who "eats to live" rather than "lives to eat". I gave them 1 star because at least the food was digestible (and it's the minimum that Yelp allows). Otherwise, take a short drive down to Bedford Highway and hit the classic Chinatown which offers more authentic Chinese tastes, and better service. Or any other Chinese restaurant in HRM. TL;DR - The freshest, tastiest, consistent Chinese in Halifax. Staff are friendly and helpful and the restaurant is very clean and comfortable. If you are here for supper don't get the usually Canadian Chinese fair, go for something a little different. Really want your sweet and sour chicken balls? well you can have it.. But why when you can have the pineapple chicken, with fresh tomato and lightly breaded chicken. So good.. The menu is full of great dishes and the staff are very accommodating when it comes to changes and special requests. (Eg. Vegetarian dishes) Weekends are for Dim Sum! And by far the best in the city. Fresh, not frozen like a few others I have had in town. My personal favourites are the turnip cake in xo sauce, a nice spicy twist on the regular turnip cake. Shrimp spring rolls, pan fried dumplings, all the steamed buns, fresh made soy milk, it's all great. It's not served on a cart like you see in some big places in Toronto, but it's still quick. Finally, a Chinese Restaurant in Halifax that comes close to those I remember from my childhood in Montreal. The in-laws also grew up in Montreal and so we had to have some Honey Garlic Spareribs - perfect, and some egg rolls - not even close, but the General Tao Chicken and the Hot and Sour Soup were great. The rest of the dishes - sizzling beef, a shrimp something - I didn't write it down, were wonderful. Three big pluses for the restaurant - large portion sizes; focus on the main ingredient - no overload of green peppers that so many Asian restaurants dish up; and every dish actually tasted different. Unlike most people I do not order the chicken ball combo. I got an egg roll which was meat paste and very tasty, 12 pork dumplings which were among the best I have ever had in Halifax, and a Fried Noodle in Black Bean Sauce. The noodle was more like a thai noodle and the veggies were prefect; It is not what I was expecting but it was so good. This is definitely my new favourite place to order from. My friend got the chicken fried rice which was a very big portion but it could have been fresher with more flavour. I am sticking with their dumplings and noodles and am excited to try their Dim Sum. Give this place a chance. UPDATE: beef and broccoli was very good and chicken balls were fresh chicken they were smaller then other restaurants but very good. Will he fall in love with a new form of weekend feasting? Sort of, absolutely, and against all odds. Yes, after having my first dim sum experience in Vancouver I knew I needed to find a local source in my home city. Coming highly recommended from trusted palates, Canton Garden was first on the hit list serving dim sum starting at 11am on weekends. Experienced eaters will notice right off the bat that this isn't your average wheel-y cart, picksies-choosies dim sum experience. You'll get a paper menu, tick off the boxes of what you'd like to try, and then kick back and wait for the eats. For newbies, once you've picked your line-up, it'll be brought out as it's ready on small plates meant to share with the rest of your party. It really makes for a fun meal and a great way to relax and catch up. Having never done the full cart version, I'm perfectly fine with this. Plus, the menu has english translations so you'll be able to figure out what everything is for the most part. Admittedly, dim sum is a terrible meal option for picky eaters or the dietary-restricted. While I'm not the former, I'm definitely the latter and I found my vegetarianism really cramped my ability to get in on the action. The deep-fried tofu was delicious (obviously) but turned out to be the only thing I could eat. Even stuffed eggplant and turnip cakes were shrimp-laden. The huge spread of food drew no complaints from my companions but, you know, sadface for not getting to eat much. In the end, I ordered a veggie noodle dish to tide me over and it was tasty but a bit boring compared to what everyone else had. On the mega plus side, the staff were tremendously friendly and helpful and it was an amazing bargain. We (eight people) ordered way too much food, ate for a solid hour-and-a-half, packed much of it up to go, and it still only came to $90. I am not a Dim Sum expert, and until Saturday morning, did not know exactly what Dim Sum was. In fact, I still don't know exactly what Dim Sum is. BUT, I can say the very filling meal I had here was fantastic. Service: 5/5 They were really quick to ask us for our order, and even quicker to bring our order out to us. There were 8 in our party, and that's a pretty hefty number to get food out to in a hurry, but they certainly did it. Atmosphere: 4/5 I'm not a big fan of the fancy look that some Asian Food joints have, but that's just me. CGR (I love shortening words) is very clean, very organized, and a delight to be in. The tables have little lazy susan type wheels, so it's easy to share the plates quickly, and grab the tea pot when it comes spinning over. Food: 5/5 Delicious the whole way around. We ordered roughly ten plates of things to share amongst the 8 of us and I tried every one, and enjoyed every single one. Shrimp-stuffed eggplant, noodles, turnip-cakes, shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, deep fried tofu, veggie noodles, deep fried squid, sticky rice, AND boiled chicken feet. I've never had chicken feet before, but it was nowhere near as bad as one might think. It was really like eating a spare rib, though the texture was a little strange. Price: 5/5 OK, so... 10 or so small plates of food and 3 or 4 pits of green tea. 8 is a pretty large group, and it is not unreasonable to expect an entire group to pay roughly $130 to $150 for a meal. The bill here actually came in around $90, making it about $11/person. No matter how you slice it, feeling full having eaten delicious food and an hour or more of good company, $11 is a very reasonable price to pay, without a doubt. You like Dim Sum? This would have a whole chapter! (in case we didn't realize something, when I say I would put it in a book it means it was GOOD!) Now, moving on to the "main course" We had the standard issue dinner for three, which consisted of Chicken Balls, Sweet and Sour Ribs, Chicken Fried Rice, and Chicken Chow Mein (pictures all added previous to my review).. Ribs the standard gooey mess coated in way to much sauce, our sauce had some strands of ginger in it which we enjoyed slightly more then the ribs.. Chicken balls, well they are a standard Canadian Chinese food for a reason! (we even got the standard issue red dye goo!) Chicken Fried rice, well done, tasted better then standard issue food but yet was still under whelming. Chicken Chow Mein, when it was hot it was good! to sum up! Food is good! if you want standard non greasy Canadian Chinese food! however ORDER THAT WON-TON SOUP! you wont soon regret it! Location For the type of restaurant it is, its in the perfect location for its clientele. Price The price tag is fair for what you get, unless you go for individual dishes, then it gets costly. Combos were pretty well priced and were the standard issued combos of the Canadian Chinese market. So if you want the standard selections, by all means Combos are the way! Want certain things, be prepared to pay 10-15 bucks a dish. Service The service is a little confusing... There were two girls serving, one who spoke very strong English and one who had a bit of a struggle. There was no sign to indicate it was seat yourself, so we stood there looking like clear new comers. There were a lot of orders flying out the door, which has a sign of both good and bad things, a lot of take out means there are a lot of people who don't like the service, but like the food enough to order it.. so hm.. but anyway! back to the service. Went here yesterday to meet up with a few Yelpers for a dim sum brunch. The last time I had dim sum was years ago in Toronto, back then the restaurant we went to had carts circling the restaurant and you picked your dishes from them. I kind of miss that but ordering off a menu isn't so bad and you get a better sense of what you are getting. I loved every dish we tried, well, I took a pass on the steamed chicken feet, if they'd been fried I might have had a go but with steamed it's a texture thing. Dumplings steamed and fried, pork and shrimp; tofu, squid, stuffed egg plant, noodles, turnip cake, sticky rice, steamed pork buns and spring rolls. I think that about covers it, that's the beauty of having a larger group, you get to try a variety. And a few pots of green tea to wash it down. All for a reasonable price. Service was attentive and very helpful when asked what each contained. It would have been better if the menu had been more forthcoming as to what each dish contained, especially since we had a vegetarian and one allergic to seafood. For example, surprised the stuffed eggplant and turnip cake both contained shrimp. All in all an enjoyable time with good food and good company. Worth a return visit. read more

Amazing, best dim sum I've ever had, you can choose your level of heat with the ginger beef and the vegetable lo mein was crisp, so tasty! It's in a strip mall so it doesn't look special from the outside but trust me, you want to try this place! The restaurant is clean and comfortable with lots of seating. I love Canton Garden's egg rolls. I admit to enjoying the mystery-meat tube-like structures more than I should. Who knows what I'm actually eating, but they gave me a fierce headache and upset tummy this time around. Perhaps it's time to swear them off. It's been a long time since we've ordered takeout from Canton Garden, and not much has changed. Their menu is extensive, prices more-or-less reasonable, and service is efficient. We've never had a long wait for our orders, no matter how large. Other than the egg rolls, however, their food is ... okay. It's not great, but with a bit of soy sauce for flavour it works. I normally get the chicken with broccoli. We also ordered Chinese vegetables and General Tso's chicken. Everything is cut into huge chunks rather than bite-size pieces, which adds the step of trying to cut your food on top of a bed of rice. The restaurant itself is clean, quiet and inviting. However, they were playing Muzak versions of 80s hits. Have you ever heard a sax version of Jack Wagner's "All I Need"? I have, and it's not pretty. *shudders* read more

We called to order on NYE (knowing full well it is busy and they turn their phones off early) 45 minutes before cut-off, they put us on hold (rather, set the phone down, we could still hear everything going on) for 10 minutes, and then hung up on us. General toa chicken... That to me should be spicy. This is what I ordered when I got take out along with a couple egg rolls. The restaurant itself was very clean and new. Not too bright not too dark... More like a sushi nami atmosphere. I paid about 25$ for 4 eggs rolls and general tao chicken. That to me is a little bit... But in any case. I didn't find the chicken was spicy... It was more of a set taste. It was good, fresh and onions and green peppers crunchy. But to me... General Tao should be spicy... This wasn't The egg rolls were great however. Nice crisp wrapping with a good amount of filling and it wasn't pasty and gummy like someone other egg rolls around the city I've had Over all good food. A cross between "American/Canadian" Chinese food with a few more authentic dishes thrown in for a good mix to satisfy lots of preferences. Very busy for lunch on a Saturday. There weren't many tables left, but we requested a booth and got one immediately. Seating for 80 or 100? Clean, nice, basic, some decor. The server brought over the dim sum menu. I had no idea this place even served dim sum, let alone the fact that this was the dim sum time of day. I requested the regular menu b/c I knew it would be required to find the regular "Cape Breton" Chinese food that would be required for the person I was with. Took a quick glance at the dim sum menu regardless and although it looked good, nothing of the delicious vegetarian persuasion jumped out to me. My guest ordered the "combo A" (egg roll, chicken fried rice, sweet & sour chicken balls), and said it was "good." The balls looked to me to have a lot of meat, not drowning in sauce. The rice was dark with much soy sauce I imagine, starchy/sticky, but that's how I like rice, so that looked good to me. The egg roll was just brown mush inside, with no distinguishable ingredients. My vegetable lo mein was good. I requested it with a bit of spice added, since the menu didn't have any peppers by it, to indicate heat. When it came, all the vegetables were on top, and very fresh, with noodles on bottom. There was a slight hint of spice, but not a ton. I came back by myself on another weekday for lunch and the place was mostly empty. Tried what I think was the fried vermicelli noodles with vegetables and asked for it hot, which was was, but not crazy hot. Standard single spring roll was fine. Service was friendly & efficient. Only complaint is one time another friend and I had stopped in for take-out. When she arrived home, they had forgotten the sweet & sour sauce. She phoned and they said she could come get it. Well, of course, but that isn't convenient. She asked that they deliver the sauce, although by that time her chicken balls would be cold, and they didn't offer to replace the entire dish. So that left a negative spot on the place for her. And the only negative thing for me are the two giant fish swimming in a bare aquarium when you come in the restaurant. Each of these fish are at least two feet long and it's a good sized aquarium, but I hate to see them trapped in there with their large size, just pacing back and forth, staring out as fish do. No idea if they are considered "pets" or to become menu items eventually. I'd go back and try another vegetarian dish any time. read more

Just went there, I don't like stirring up an issue in a restaurant. My other 2 visits where some of the best for a Chinese restaurant, however I ordered the A Combo with beef broccoli, they gave me 3 less chicken balls and charged me 3$ for the beef broccoli, If i order an extra piece of fish with my fish and chips they don't take away half my fries so first problem, the second and MOST glaring is the rice and beef broccoli tasted like cigarette smoke both of us confirmed this. I was in the area recently so I decided to order some take out. I was pleased to see they had online ordering available, so I made use of it (even downloaded the app for it). I ordered a small wonton soup and some Szechuan chicken. The app requires you to select your preferred spice level. I selected 'hot' but added a note that asked it be made extra hot or Chongqing spicy. They had the food ready for me within 10 minutes and the restaurant looked clean but there was no one else in there (this was around 7:30pm). The woman at the front counter was friendly and had my order waiting for me at the desk which I appreciated. However, when I got home and actually tried the food, the chicken wasn't made extra spicy at all - it wasn't even regular spicy. It was almost as if it was purposely made mild. I tried the soup and the meat inside the wontons was almost like a paste which was fairly off-putting. They were also quite stingy with the BBQ pork. The broth lacked flavour too. This place is fine if you're just looking for typical Chinese food, but it really is nothing special. On top of that, they apparently don't pay attention to special requests made within online ordering. Much better Chinese food to be had in the city. read more

Ok, I'm giving away probably one of the best kept secrets of Halifax but I want it to do well so they stick around. We are lucky to have a very good dim sum place in Halifax. Menu is relatively small compared to some of the Chinese restaurants in the bigger cities like Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary but it has all the usual dim sum suspects and then some. Quality is always very good. Service is very personable and friendly. If you like good quality, authentic dim sum, you will like this place along with all the other regular local dim sum goers. read more

Best Dim Sum in the city by far, but the Peking Duck is my favourite thing on the menu. They serve it as a three course meal for $60 that (with a side of rice) is an ample meal for 4. Amazingly tasty Chinese food in Halifax! Try the salt and pepper fried squid - the batter is air light and tasty; the squid is perfectly cooked. The stir fry beef with snow peas features perfectly seasoned tender beef and crunchy snow peas. The sweet and sour pork with pineapple is one of the best I have ever tasted. We ended up at hi Restaurant on Mother's day as Arirang was closed. Had a terrible Service experience, food arrived very late one dish at a time , had to sit and stare at our rice and wait for the chicken dish , since we were all starving ended up eating plain rice. Manager was rude and said it is due to the Mothers day rush. She did offer us another rice dish but was late again. However we noticed that so many take were gone while we waited and other side of the Restaurant was being served quickly, we were just forgotten. Before being seated we asked if there will be a long wait and were told only for the Take Outs. We got settled and placed the order wright away. Waited patiently for 40 minutes finally our Spring Rolls arrived, after another half hour Soup arrived. We started getting impatient and asked the waitress how much longer she said will be son. Our rice finally arrived after another 15 minutes. Had to sit there and stare at it as they totally forgot about our chicken Dish. At that point we had lost the desire to eat. Will never be going there. I understand it was busy but we have been to other Restaurants on occasions like and never experienced anything like this. read more

I can honestly say that there has never been a time that I've ate at Canton Garden where I've ever been disappointed. The staff are both prompt and extremely friendly - especially the lady owner. The food is always fresh, especially the vegetables. There is always a excellent portion as well. I would recommend this place to everyone! read more

This has been our go-to place for chinese take-out for a couple of years now, and it continues to impress. Very consistent quality of food, all the dishes we've tried (maybe half the menu) are tasty and unique - we don't get a 'blend of flavours' like you can sometimes get from a restaurant that cooks things together. I thought I had found a favorite dish with the Singapore Style Fried Vermicelli, but the last couple of times we ordered it, I found it a bit dry for my liking. I've tried my share of Chinese food joints around halifax and have seen this restaurant many times and have been meaning to try it. Finally had the opportunity as I went there with a few coworkers for a Friday lunch. The place seemed busy which is always a good sign. There were 6 of us and We decided to order a few dishes to share. Tofu soup, deep fried squid, general Tao chicken, beef with Chinese broccoli, a noodle dish and rice. All were very tasty and I would definitely come back again and try different dishes. Also definitely want to try the dim sum. Definitely recommend trying this place. read more

Having come from Malaysia and tasted one of best Dim Sum there is (yes - Ipoh, Perak), I can say that Canton Garden's dim sum definitely nail it right. Rule of thumb for gauging a good Dim Sum restaurant is to always order the basics - Shuey Mai (or spelled as Shui My in their menu) which is pork dumpling and Ha Kow (prawn dumpling). The pork paste in the dumpling was seasoned to perfection. It was steamed at the right temperature and timing and thus wasn't too mushy and had the right texture to it. Ha Kow was 3 and 1/2 over 5 which I would say isn't too bad. I would give it a 4 if the skin of the dumpling was not too sticky but overall the prawns were fresh and bountiful per dumpling. Calamari was good and fresh but had a little too much msg (salt) for my liking. Turnip Cake (we call it carrot cake back in Msia but that's matter of terminology) was brilliant - not overly crowded with stuffings - right amount of mushroom and chinese sausage slices in them to make it interesting. For a place situated in suburban Halifax, the pricing isn't too much neither is too cheap - reasonable and as expected. Staff were abit slow with English though - so use simple words, but generally very friendly and patient. Definitely a place I would recommend to others to have a taste of Chinese cuisine. 2 thumbs up to the chef and the owner for maintaining the quality of the dishes. read more

Amazing dim sum, amazing chinese main meals. This place is the best kept secret in Halifax. We've eaten at many other restaurants and Canton Garden is by far the freshest and cleanest Chinese restaurant in town. Whenever I've been here it's full of Chinese people so it has to be good! read more

By far the best Chinese restaurant in town! The food is always fresh and delicious! Affordable and quite large servings! It's been the only place my family and I eat at/order from when we want Chinese food since we found it about a year ago. The eggrolls, spicy squid, Shanghai noodles, dumplings and Dim Sim are to die for! I like the fact that they have a regular menu and an authentic Chinese menu, it gives people a wider variety of food to try and enjoy. The lady who owns it is fantastic! Perfect place to get catering from for corporate/private parties. Great customer service and best place to go to for Chinese food! read more
