I ordered quite a bit of food from their vegetarian menu for my partner and I, and they were able to make it vegan friendly. The lady who took our order was knowledgeable and helpful, even asking questions to confirm if certain ingredients were okay! The delivery took about around an hour but the food was still rather warm when it got to us, and tasty! Everything was made correctly except for the rice noodle chow mein, which arrived as curry noodles? My partner still enjoyed it but it wasn't the dish we ordered. Overall, it's the best vegan friendly Chinese food that I've had in Halifax. I will definitely order again, just making sure to have her read back the order! This place, for me, is as good as it gets for satisfying that craving for Canadian Chinese cuisine. Although the inside is less than stellar. Honestly, it's dingy, but I'm into it. It's close to my house, and the combos are amazing. Food for value wise, it can't be beat! They have daily dinner combos to choose from for only $9. I'm not sure what the lunch special price is, but I'm sure it's a bargain. I had the Monday dinner combo of ginger beer, chow mein, chicken fried rice and an egg roll. For $9? This poor girl is into it. To quote my mom: It was the best chicken fried rice in the city. I think Happy Garden has beat out The Great Wall for my favorite Chinese spot in the city. You can find it by looking out for the red sign that says "new open, new flavor", it's tucked away on Birmingham St, which I think will work in their favor since our new NSLC store opened up less than a block away. I recommend the combo 15. It comes with an egg roll and 3 different dishes of your choosing. I typically get the chow mein, Kung pow chicken and general tso chicken. they make the best general tso's chicken I've ever had. It's nice and crispy and the sauce is fantastic. The only lackluster dish I had here was the soo guy, the rest has been awesome. The prices are also really reasonable. Highly recommend! I've only ever tried the Canadian Chinese dishes so I can't speak to the more authentic choices, but they do have a good selection of REAL Chinese dishes.. interestingly enough they have an option to bring your own lobster or fish and they'll prepare it any way you please. read more

I had a bad first experience here. But am now a regular. They are so fast and their food has always been good. Free delivery is great too. Singapore noodles are my favourite but unfortunately, I don't like them here. But everything else is great. Highly recommend. Beef and broccoli, rice and general tao chicken is great! For me, this place is now the best Chinese food in the city since Sun Sun cafe inexplicably closed down. The rice is delicious, the dumplings are divine and the sauce they come with is wonderful. The egg rolls are delicious as is the sauce they come with and the almond chicken gai ding is masterful, best I've had in the city. Both ginger chicken and ginger beef are splendid, though I prefer the chicken as I find the beef a tad more chewy and I have a jaw issue. The only issue is I got used to having soggy, wonderful chicken balls from Sun Sun and Happy Garden kind of skimps on the sauce for them and they don't put the chicken balls in the sauce, but that's all personal preference. i just start them soaking while i eat my appetizers and they're good to go when I'm done those. The prices for the portions are outstanding, i had to move out of the neighborhood and I miss the place so much. The customer service I always got was wonderful, the lady there always recognized me and was warm and inviting in greeting me. I also enjoyed the ambiance with the Chinese station on the TV, I enjoyed watching it trying to figure out what was going on in the Chinese soap operas. Yes, I'm a huge nerd. :D As another reviewer noted it does look a little dingy, but it's by no means dirty. I've never had any problem with the cleanliness. I always picked up since I lived like 2 minutes away so I can't speak to their delivery service but they do offer delivery. Try this place out if you're nearby, you won't regret it. read more

This is a speculative review. I haven't eaten at the restaurant and until today, didn't think I ever would. I remember when Mr. Chang's was in this same location and that place wasn't great. When it morphed into Happy Garden, I didn't pay too much attention, except to notice that it was empty one day when I walked by. But I plan to go very soon and here is why: I just met with an acquaintance from Calgary who is visiting. He ate here and said it is very good. I trust his opinion because he has lived in Hong Kong and travels extensively in China and hence knows a thing or two about Chinese food. He said it compares with good Chinese restaurants in bigger Canadian cities like Calgary and Toronto. It's on my list! read more

My friends and I ordered a few dishes from Happy Garden. The food was 30 minutes late and we found 3 long hairs in our hot & sour soup. We got delivery from this place one night while vacationing. It was one of the better Nova Scotian Chinese restaurants I've eaten from. The portions were huge and priced well, we got three giant dishes and egg rolls delivered for about $30 and it was enough to feed us three meals and it was all delicious. I like how they give a lot of rice with their combos because I have a big appetite and there's nothing worse than a restaurant being stingy with portions. You also get a decent amount of chicken balls and bean sprouts with the combos I ordered. We Ordered: Spring Rolls ( veggie ) - Low point, very generic. Singapore Noodles - Great, good balance of spiciness and curry flavour. - Tons of noodles. - Not too much veggies or meat. Ma Po Tofu - Also good, risky thing to order in Halifax and it was very tasty here. General Tao Chicken - Very good quality Chicken and perfectly cooked. - Its very rare you get these fried chicken dishes with fresh fried chicken. Finally. - Sauce was tasty. Young Chow Fried Rice - Good fried rice, tastes like it should. Everything was good, So far the best I've had in Halifax amongst the top Chinese places up here.
