I was getting a haircut earlier in the day and happened to notice this Chinese restaurant. The sign in the window advertising Dim Sum on Sundays. I decided to come back later that evening and I'm glad I did just that. The staff was extremely friendly and was happy to find me a table for one. I ordered a spring roll with meat, wonton soup, and the beautiful waitress recommended Spicy Beef No.15. Me and my girlfriend went to The Great Wall last night for my birthday dinner. I've had food from here once before, but it was take-out and may have been a little cold, because this experience was much, much better. All of the staff were super friendly, and the owner even came over at one point and checked on us. We started with spring rolls and pork dumplings, both were great - the spring rolls were very fresh and crispy, and the dumplings tasted amazing (first time having asian style dumplings). Then we moved onto some pork ribs, which were equally good and very tender. We also had the ginger beef with BBQ pork fried rice - highly recommend trying the ginger beef, the spices were great and the beef was nice and crispy on the outside, but tender inside. I finally tried The Great Wall. Opted to go with their own delivery rather than Skip because they offer free delivery and the prices are cheaper then on Skip. I'm glad I finally tried it. The Singapore noodles are pretty good. Not the best but good, and I got the spicy ones and they were spicy. The rice and egg rolls were really good. Not the usual meat paste ones like everywhere else in Halifax but probably the best one I've had so far in Halifax. The honey garlic spareribs were really good and lots of meat, just very many. Chicken balls were okay but I'd recommend asking for sauce on the side to avoid soggy ones. A lot of batter on them too. Unfortunately, the beef and broccoli was very mediocre and not very good. The Great Wall is a fixture of Canadian Chinese-style food in the city, perennially winning The Coast's BoF Chinese food and dim sum categories year after year. They're also known just as much for owner Patrick Wong's friendly nature and ever-present smile, even when he's delivering food in the worst of Halifax's weather. A couple co-workers and I showed up in one of the recent February storms as The Great Wall was close by and one of the few spots still open downtown. The main dining room isn't huge, but is still a good size, heavy in red and yellow and your fairly typical Chinese restaurant decor, but here it feels like the way it should be, similar to the way an old diner is. Chinese Zodiac place mats completed the vibe. There were just a couple other tables occupied, as the storm was gearing up, but some more people trickled in despite it being late-ish for dinner. We went the family-style route, ordering the orange beef, oyster beef, almond chicken soo guy, and Buddha's delight. Egg rolls and rice rounded out our meal. For drinks we went the "when in Rome" (Beijing?) direction and got a round of Tsing Taos. Our egg rolls came first, after a very short wait. The filling was a mix of pork and veggies, with a lightly peppery seasoning, and they weren't skimpy on the meat, which was nice. The wrapper was wonderfully crisp, so all in all they were very good egg rolls and we were all impressed. The rest of the food came soon after, filling up our table with delicious looking plates. I'm typically not a big fan of almond soo guy, especially in take out or delivery as it just gets horribly soggy, as I find it doesn't have a lot of flavour. Dining in, it was crispy at first, but was still not particularly impressive. The sauce/gravy on it was fine, but certainly not a game changer for this dish. The orange beef was a plate of crispy fried beef with some stir fried veggies. The beef was good and crispy, and the orange sauce was lightly citrusy with a nice little kick that wasn't overpowering. Very tasty. I would highly suggest that you make sure you don't eat a big piece of orange peel as that is a bit...off putting. The Buddha's delight was there to top up our meal with more veggies, and it certainly delivered. Big hunks of veggies were in your typical light sauce. It wasn't ground breaking, but it was a nice addition amongst all the meats. Sure, it wasn't the most "authentic Chinese" meal, but it was well done and at least we didn't order chicken balls, ok? And throughout it all we saw Patrick's smiling face popping in and out between deliveries as he braved the weather. read more

Having one favourite place that I always frequent I thought that I would give his a fair chance. The BF ordered as he has the Great Wall often. He played it safe with the SS Chicken Balls and chicken fried rice with spring and egg rolls. The Chicken Balls were fresh and big and extremely tasty. An hour and a half went by and I hear nothing, I call the place and ask whats going on, and im told its on its way and itll be there shortly Two hours go by and someone calls me and asks if im paying with cash or credit, I say credit and they just say ok no problem Two hours and 15 minutes later my food is FINALLY here. The driver apologizes for how long it took . I forgive it all. Even tip the driver. Im happy I finally got my food I go inside and open the food and its COLD . Uneatably cold. I call and ask to speak to a manager because I just want my money back. Dim sum - the idea is very appealing. Order lots of small servings of things so you get to try a bunch of different dishes? I love that idea. I've only been to Great Wall for dim sum and the experience was underwhelming the first time and disappointing the second. Let's start with the good - the food. Of what I had, it was very good. I can't be alone in thinking this as the place was packed within a few minutes of opening. My companions both times I've gone loved what they had as well. If I were rating this restaurant solely based on food, It'd probably get a five. So why 2 stars then? It's pretty much everything else. Let's start with the menu - I don't expect every restaurant to have a legend for which dishes are vegetarian, gluten-free, etc but I do hope you'd be consistent. If you mark some items where it's not clear that they have meat as indicating they have meat, do it for all items. I knew going in that I would have limited vegetarian options but I didn't expect that I would a) have so few; b) not be able to figure out which ones are which. On the good side - the menu contained pictures which I always like. This leads to another challenge - the staff. It's a busy place, I get it. As I said, it was pretty much full within a few minutes of opening. I don't perceive myself as a demanding customer but I'd also hope that I could ask a few questions about the menu without feeling like I'm a nuisance. The first server we saw practically took our order form from us just minutes after sitting down - even though we hadn't even filled out any of the spaces. When we were finally ready to order, it took quite some time before someone came to take our form. The meal was good - though I did unintentionally order two dishes that had meat but my companion got to have more food; good for him. He filled up fast and I didn't have many options so we thought we'd get our food to go. Which... took some time. Far longer than we would have liked. Despite the fact that neither of us were eating our food for quite some time, no one checked in on us. I finally flagged down a server who grabbed us some to-go-boxes and we were out of there. Overall, it felt very much like an "insider's club" - if you know what you're doing, you'll do great. But it's not the most welcoming of environments for newcomers. A menu that was slightly clearer (e.g., listing ingredients, marking which contain shellfish, indicators for which dishes are vegetarian, etc) would ease the pain. However, businesses is booming so I don't foresee any changes. read more

With the gross, continuous rain that's fallen upon the city, I was feeling rather lazy, so I decided to order in dinner. I decided to give The Great Wall a try, I hadn't tried their Chinese before, but had heard it was some of the cities best. The phone was answered promptly, and my order was taken efficiently. My food arrived within the promised time, and the delivery guy was super friendly. I also like that they have a credit card machine that they bring ot the door. With things starting off great, I figured I was in for a yummy meal, wrong. I had an order of lemon chicken, which came with steamed rice, the vegetarian singapore noodles (I don't eat Pork or Beef) and the mushroom egg drop soup. Lemon Chicken is one of my favorites and my family often makes our own lemon sauce. The actual chicken was good, still fairly crispy, considering it was takeout, and I liked that they packed the sauce separate so the chicken wouldn't get soggy . I was really disappointed by the sauce, it was really thick and artificially yellow looking, (similar to the Vh sauce). Flavour wise it was very bland with a hint of bitter lemon rind. The rice was perfectly fine. As for my veg Singapore noodles, the sign on the take-out menu indicated they were spicy, but I couldn't detect the slightest bit of heat. The noodles themselves had good texture, but again the flavour was completely bland, the sauce seemed to be a Hoisin and Soy Sauce that was diluted with water. At the opposite end of the spectrum was the soup, it was so salty that I could only take a few sips, before abandoning it, and I like salty foods. Overall, while I found the service to be lovely, I can't get behind the food and I think from now on, I'll make sure I have some cash on hand and stick with Robie Foods. read more

We went for lunch. The fact this place gets consistently rave reviews suggests the quality of Chinese food in Halifax is abysmal, not that this place is great. It looks like a Chinese restaurant from the 50's: paper placemats with canned discussions of the various animals for each year, no chopsticks, bright orange sauces on other diners' food and a decided lack of variety in the selections (various combos of egg rolls, fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, ribs and chow mein). We ordered the wonton soup with egg roll special and the Szechuan shredded beef (one of a handful of options not paired with fried rice). When they arrived there were virtually no vegetables in sight. The soup was bland and while the egg rolls appeared homemade they were filled with ground beef! The Szechuan beef came on chow mein noodles and was served with rice. A few green pepper pieces and some tiny carrot strips accompanied the beef. It seems inconceivable that there are not better options in all of Halifax. read more

I work a stone's throw from this place and only just had my first Great Wall experience. A few of us from work decided on chinese for lunch, so we place our order for delivery. I have to say our food came super fast and was piping hot. And Patrick, the owner, is a character! He came bouncing through the door with more energy than he likely knows what to do with! The portions they give you are HUGE. None of us could finish our meals. My fried ginger beef was amazing. It definitely packs a good punch of heat. Its got good ginger flavor and heat without the stingy/burny feeling ginger often gives. The spring rolls were quite delish as well. I also noted how crispy their egg rolls were. Usually you get them and they're mushy and gross. Not these ones. And their filling was quite good too - not that weird mushy reminds-me-of-cat-food pasty filling you usually get. I can see how they've been voted best chinese. They've figured out what works and have stuck with it. One of the guys at work commented that he usually orders the same thing from them and every time its the same. So they've figured it out and kept it consistent, and clearly it works! A girlfriend and I are lovers of all things DUCK so of course we had to try Great Wall on Bedford Row after reading that it has had the consistent title of best-ranked Chinese in Halifax for 10 years.. We arrived around 8pm and were greeted by Patrick Wong who provided us with a couple of recommendations from the Chinese menu. We shared a delicious order of pan-fried pork potstickers, flavorful Yang Chow Special fried-rice, steamed veggies & a crispy, roasted half duck. I can not even begin to tell you how excellent this meal was! We literally stuffed our faces with crispy, moist & delicious duck for 2 hours! Sooo good! I can safely tell you this restaurant is solid in making Cantonese cuisine with spot-on execution. Just try the potstickers already! Yummy food & friendly owners. It's easy to see why this place is among the very best in Halifax. I am already dreaming about my next duck meal... quack! read more

I was actually expecting it to be really bad because they serve chicken balls (warning sign!), but I was pleasantly surprised. I definitely get the royal treatment. Every time I walk in, no matter how busy (and it's ca-RA-zy busy during lunch), I am always greeted by a friendly, 'Hello-o-o-o, Tracy!" from the always exuberant Patrick Wong (Proprietor). Honestly, I don't know where he gets his energy. I am convinced he is the busiest man on the Halifax restaurant scene...and if he's ever stressed, he never let's it show. Back to the food. If you want consistency, quantity, fast service, and just plain yummy Chinese food, go to the Great Wall. Their combination plates are gigantic - great value and as far as Canadian style Chinese food goes, you can't beat it. But you really do need to sample their more authentic dishes. There are many regular customers who rave about their signature Ginger Beef and I'm sure it's freaking awesome, but believe it or not, I have yet to try it myself. (I know. Gasp!) It's just that I am so addicted to the Shredded Beef that most days I can't bring myself to order anything else. Picture this: Scrumptious strips of flash fried beef with distinctive smokey/chili/garlic flavour (and just the right amount of heat) over a bed of thin, crispy rice noodles and sauteed peppers. Oh my God, so good! If your dish doesn't come with an egg roll, be sure to order one on the side. My favourite in the city. My wife and I go here fairly often and we always have the same experience- very good food! Usually we order the same thing, orange beef for my wife, black pepper beef for me, and we share a rice. The food is always really tasty and never takes long to come out to the table. Patrick and his wife know us and always greet us when we come in. As I said, we generally order the same stuff, so once when I decided to order something different and I heard them arguing back in the kitchen that is not my order, which made me chuckle. Ok, this is a new write up. I'll have to be fair because I wanted give this guys a second chance and I was happy that I did. Since they aren't many Chinese restaurants Halifax, really good ones are rarer still. I suppose I attributed the last low rating given to them was due to the fact that I went there during summer (quiet period) and thus quality kind of dropped. This time around, I went there during Fall when all the students are back. Both my wife and I ordered the following: 1) Pork dumplings (siew mai), 2) shrimp dumplying (ha gaw) 3) Shrimp Cheong Fan (we call it chee chong fan back home) 4) Pork ribs with black beans 5) Fried squids 6) Egg tarts They were all good! First up, pork dumplings - well seasoned. Not overly steamed. The right size with right consistency and texture. Shrimp dumpling was one of my fav. The skin was nicely done. You can tell its homemade as it didn't tear easily while at the same time didn't have the plasticy texture. And shrimps were big yet fresh. Cheong Fan was nicely cooked. Right texture and neatly arrange (must I add). Very presentable. My only complain was I wish there was more if it per plate. Pork ribs were small (could be because of the stock they have that day) but overall not too bad either. It wasn't the best I've tasted, but wasn't worst either. Fried squids were also my fav. Was juicy, succulent and fresh. I like the fact that they didn't over salt or pepper it - which is great. Last but not least the egg tarts were brilliant. The pastry was crispy and just right. However, would have love it to be a wee bit bigger though. Overall, It was pretty obvious that they should be upgraded from a 2 star to 4 stars. New owners and it is not the same but not a one-star as I saw someone post. I've been thrice now with the new owners (we did not know it was sold, we thought Patrick was away). We went twice and it was okay but not the same. We then waited to see if Patrick was back. But then: it was my bday and it's just tradition to go here and so we did. And I'm happy. (Eating my leftovers as I type. Yum!) So... I will continue to go here as long as the food is the same as before, prices and portions are fair and friendly service. 3rd Time's a Charm: The service and food was better this third time so they may be finding their stride. My fortune cookie was fresh LOL! Even with the previous owners there were times when you would get a different cook or the bad server but such issues always were resolved and so I see these new owners as heading in the right direction. Really decent Chinese food in the 'fax. Not the best I've ever tasted, but for the vegetarian that craves Chinese in the province of NS you have few other options. Most Halifax Chinese places are dirty and scary dungeons and have menus that haven't been updated since the cold war. The Great Wall is better by simply being the exception to the other terrible choices in the city. I like getting the Buddhist Delight which is basically just a simple vegetable stirfry. The spicy tofu is also really good, even my omni friends love this dish. Great Wall delivers and sometimes it's this sweet old man who acts like your asian grandpa. He always refuses to take a tip and reminds me to study hard and do well in school. I love him! read more

We love having dim sum here because it is hard to find good dim sum in Halifax. They have iced and hot Hong Kong milk tea which me and my husband always order with our food. Prices are reasonable and there is a lot of variety at dim sum. Dim Sum is only offered on the weekend though. For dinner food it's a bit more basic, but good quality. We recently got takeout Yang Chow rice which is very delicious and more authentic Chinese. Their meat dishes are OK, a lot of sweet sauce options. Portions could be a bit bigger, containers a bit smaller then the restaurants in my Ontario home city. Takeout is free delivery if you spend 15 dollars and really satisfies a Chinese food craving. The Wall, it is one of the restaurants that gets me out of the food court and down the street. The owner (Patrick) is always friendly and bouncing all over the place. We went there for a team lunch on Thursday and made sure to call ahead for the 15 of us. If you get here at lunch time you get the lunch menu but you can still order off of the secret menu (dinner). I went with the combo #9 that was the egg roll, sweet and sour chicken, rice, beaf and brocoli. Once your order is placed it takes no time at all to get your meal. The Great Wall might be the closest thing my friends and I have to a "regular" restaurant in Halifax. At least once a month, we convene for Sunday morning Dim Sum - always arriving exactly as the restaurant is opening at 11:30 am - so we're guaranteed the freshest, hottest dumplings of the morning. Not that the quality of the food is any concern here. Everything arrives at the table the moment it's ready, creating a steady flow of delicious steamed, baked and occasionally fried bundles of shrimp, pork, chicken and beef. Owner Patrick Wong is always busily zipping around the restaurant, refilling tea pots, welcoming diners, and delivering menus, and he always has a smile and a friendly greeting for everyone. The restaurant also serves a traditional Chinese food menu throughout the week, which features Cantonese and Sze-Chuan specialties. But come for the Dim Sum. And be prepared to leave with a belly so deliciously overstuffed you have to head straight home for a Sunday afternoon nap. read more

Been a long-time customer of Patrick's over the years. I've always admired the man's tireless energy, but am getting a bit concerned with the quality of some of his kitchen's dishes. I suspect this is a new cook's performance, or the chinese-food feed trough buffet that set up shop behind them for a year or 2 on Water St. forced them to cut corners for a while? Anyway, here goes: The Beef fried rice has become noticeably more oily and bland. I don't know if this was a recipe change or what, but it should be fixed. The ginger beef is also a toss-up, as some nights it's excellent, but others it's doughy and under-sauced. In defence, though, the sweet & sour chicken balls lately have been beyond good - we're getting almost batter-free chicken - it's great. Again, though, little scrimpy on the sauce sometimes. Beyond that, things continue as always, with lightning quick service. IMPORTANT: They also have to remove that little piece of paper someone put over the Interac/Debit's 0$ tip option. I don't mind dropping a tip even on pick up, but I do mind that someone appears to be taking that freedom to choose away from me. read more

The Great Wall is my go to take out place for delicious and affordable chinese food. I first found them when I moved to the city and looked for a chinese restaurant close to my apartment that offered a take out option. I was very pleased the first visit and have went back several times since. Their combo dishes are huge and I always have enough food to last me for atleast two meals. They are also very flexible and willing to customize dishes for you (ex. I prefer chicken with broccoli to beef and they happily switch it out for me) My biggest problem with chinese food is how greasy a lot of it can be. I've never had this problem with The Great Wall. It's always very fresh and presents quality in the taste. The only negative things I could say about this restaurant is I would recommend to stay away from is the wonton soup. I'm a huge fan of wonton soup and could eat it regularly if given the chance. Unfortunately, the two times I've tried theirs it's been so salty that the other flavor you can taste is pure salt. Also, don't be late when ordering or the owner will be sure to let you know that you didn't show up on time. Overall, a great place for chinese food in the city at a very decent price. Clean and simple decor and very fast meal service. They have all of your standard Chinese dishes and are very attentive. I asked for a special order, one that diverts from the menu and got it with no troubles. The owner was happy to make any noodle dish with the rice noodles instead of the egg noodles, to accomodate my gluten sensitivities, and she was quite friendly about it. At most places, being vegan and gluten sensitive makes it hard to find something tasty, but Great Wall had many options and all under $10 or $12. Great indeed!!! read more

So when I saw the pics on Yelp and saw they had dim sum I thought they would atleast have something close or "Asian food" when I got there the place is empty. The dim sum is only on Sunday. I was hungry at the time so I decided just to get anything and has the lunch special number 2 to go. She told me it would take 10mins so I figure it was gonna be fresh. Wow was I wrong. When I brought it back to the hotel room. The ribs were chewy and super dark. Not like honey looking ribs. The Chinese rice was so Dark and chunks of chickens. The Great Wall is where I first had my taste of the Singapore Noodles. I was introduced from a friend who took me to lunch. She said you have to try these. That was it, l was hooked. Now every time I eat Chinese, they are always on the menu and of course extra hot. I do not frequent here a lot, but the food was good. The service was nice and I am not aware of two separate menu's like Sara said, so I will have to inquire next time. Thank you Sarah for pointing that out.
