Up until recently, all my years in Halifax were spent car-free (not to be confused with CAREfree; I…read morehad many, many cares) and living on the Halifax side of the harbour. As such, there were many places in places as relatively downtown Dartmouth I'd never been to, let alone as far out as 2 Boys Smokehouse and Deli. Now that I'm living on the Dark Side and have a sweet set of 2016 wheels, I made the effort to hit up 2 Boys for a late lunch and for some of their carnivorous wonders when I was in the area one day. Despite it being mid-afternoon, there was a steady line at both the meat and sandwich counters. I was hitting both - grabbing a couple smoked pork chops, double-smoked bacon and some Black Forest ham at the former, and the mixed meat sub at the latter. You can choose from a large swath of options for breads, cheese, toppings and sauces, and I appreciate that there's no up-charge for things like smoked gouda. Twelve bucks for a big ol' sub, and that's that! I attacked my sub once I was back in the car, although I opted to only have half of it before heading home. I forgot to ask, and now can't readily find the answer online, but the meats in the mixed meat appeared to be salami, ham and donair. A true Nova Scotian sub! The smoked gouda held its own against the hearty meats, while a generous helping of lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, and red onion brought crunch and freshness. For a sauce, I went with their "sub sauce" which seems to be an herby vinaigrette, and its tanginess helped cut through all the big, rich flavours and add some zing. A step outside my car to brush the crumbs off myself and the seat, and I was on my way home. My next time back at 2 Boys found my wife and I looking for a quick lunch in the Cole Harbour area after having gone for a walk on the Salt Marsh Trail. Once again, despite the mid-afternoon time, there was a constant flow of people in and out of the store, but luckily the ticket system was getting put to use today, so in spite of the poorly-formed line, the individual numbers helped keep things moving along. This time around, I went for a ham sub, while my wife got the Montreal smoked meat sandwich. I continue to be a big fan of their toppings options, especially the inclusion of ostensibly more "premium" cheese like the smoked gouda with the regular items - without an extra surcharge. Staff guided us through the sandwich construction process deftly and with a smile, which can't be easy with the constant onslaught at 2 Boys. This time we sat down at one of the small, two-person tables along their storefront, to take in the sights, sounds and smells of Cole Harbour Road. There was a good amount of ham, with the layers of lightly sweet and salty meat generously topped with my chosen toppings of lettuce, onions, bell peppers, tomato and cucumber. The smoked gouda added some more umami oomph to the sandwich and having had my sandwich toasted brought out the flavour of both the meat and cheese more. My wife's sandwich went over well, as she's a big fan of Montreal smoked meat. I prefer it when it's been heated, like in the delis where it originated, but even at fridge temperature, the peppery bite of the smoky meat comes through well. The regular white bread was pushed to the edges of its structural integrity with the stack of meat, but it *just* managed to hold on. Whenever I'm in 2 Boys Smokehouse & Deli, I feel like a kid in a candy store, with so many great options - both the sandwiches, and the deli and grocery items. It's a diamond in the strip mall rough, and one that I'll be frequenting when I'm in the area.

The experience was more 3.5 than 3. We went to Boston Pizza on Portland St. Friday for dinner, and…read moreour experience was similar to many of the reviews already posted. We were a family table of four, with two kids, and BP is a very kid-friendly restaurant. I find it a bit pricey, but I understand that's the way it goes with large franchise restaurants. Overall, the service was prompt and friendly, the kids were entertained with activities, and the pizza was yummy. We ordered the kids' meals first to get them started, and that was followed by a large Tuscan pizza and a beer for us big kids. All the food arrived quickly. Meals for the kids included: chicken fingers and side veggies (steamed carrots, broccoli, cauliflower) with apple juice for the 5 year old (he chose very-blue jello for dessert) and a kid's personal pepperoni pizza with side veggies and chocolate milk for the 6 year old (he chose a 'chocolate pizza' for dessert). Note that a kids' chocolate pizza dessert is a chocolate medallion, shaped like a pizza, not an actual dessert pizza like those offered at other joints like Pizza Hut. Our Tuscan pizza arrived promptly too, and it was yummy! If you want to try a pizza without tomato base (or if you're dreaming of Tuscany on a cold wet day!), the flavour combination is delicious. The sun-dried tomatoes might make your heart sing too...or maybe it was just mine, in any case, YUM. You can choose regular or multi-grain crust. I asked our server for her recommendation, and we went with multi-grain because that's how BP does their Tuscan. Delicious. The atmosphere in the dining room is lively, chatty and easy going. When the kids spotted friends from camp sitting two tables over it was mini pizza-party-town until the orders started to arrive. There was at least one moment of great timing just as our little guy was getting thirsty and restless. The manager came by suddenly to ask how things were going so I asked for some water, and he brought it over right away. I half expected him to go delegate the task to our server as I've seen other restaurant managers do over the years. But he did what I would've done, and the friendly, efficient & personalized service by everyone involved made our meal really enjoyable. Nicely done, staff! I ask you this, is there anything better than pizza leftovers in your fridge? :)

On Wyze Road in…read morethe north end of Dartmouth close to Albro Lake Road - not where you'd expect to find amazing eats! Had a breakfast sandwich - amazing. Everything is fresh!!! Huge chubby sausage rounds. Avocado toast was on point - the chimichurri is a nice touch. Generous amount of avocado. Had key lime pie and a strawberry lemon tart. Both made in house. Very tasty. Food takes awhile to come out - because everything is made from scratch so it takes time. Also, place was busy on a Saturday at lunch. Extremely reasonable pricing for the quality you get. No doubt if this place was in peninsular Halifax the prices would be so much higher.

Note that anything that has opened since I left Halifax in 2017 is "new" to me. We weren't here for a full meal, just to re-up on caffeine and sample their sweet and savoury pastries. Their creative selection of both didn't make choosing easy, but we ended up going for the sausage roll, BBQ pork bun, and an apple custard Danish. My wife has a big weak spot for sausage rolls, and Ori's rendition of this British classic was spot-on, with a juicy, savoury sausage wrapped in flaky pastry that got a dab of black and white sesame seeds for extra flavour and crunch, and just looks cool too. While I'm more used to steamed char siu bao, the baked version are definitely a thing. This BBQ pork bun wasn't necessarily going for that, and it was still a well-executed bun with a generous filling of pulled pork that was hitting the right flavour notes, although it could have used some more of that saucy goodness that fills a top tier char siu bao. For the sweet portion of our snack, the apple custard Danish was spectacularly well-done, with wonderfully flaky layers, crisp edges and a smooth and fruity filling. A second visit had us coming on a sunny, autumn Friday for lunch, looking to try out their hot food. The menu is compact and creative, with a few sandwiches and handful of other dishes - a soup, salad, and a few entrees. My wife was quickly ensnared by the allure of the chanterelle toast, adding on the miso pumpkin soup, while I went with the lamb. Luckily it was a sunny day, so we could sit out on the patio instead of fighting for some of the very limited seating inside. My lamb turned out to be the perfect cold weather dish, with a deboned cut of collar meat that was smoked and slow cooked to absolute perfection. The lamb was bursting with smoky flavour, and was unctuous and tender in a way that reminded me of ox tail, but without all the little bones. Paired up with some chonky Borlotti beans, it had a very continental European stew kind of feel. Some somewhat large leaves of seasonal mixed greens felt a bit out of place on top of the rest of the dish, but some colour, crunch and vegetable content was for the best. Mushroom toast has become a hit of a "thing" in nicer restaurants in the past several years, but when they're as good as Ori's, it's easy to look past the ubiquity and appreciate the dish as it is. The chanterelles were toothsome but tender, in a decadent Madeira cream sauce on a thick slice of toast. It was nice to see that Ori had a GF option for the toast, and even more impressive was how well it held up to the saucy mess. The miso pumpkin soup kept the good fall vibes rolling, as the perfectly blended soup got a hint of Asian-ness from the umami-packed miso. A sprinkle of pumpkin seeds and green onions, as well as a dash of cream brought a little more flavour and texture, not to mention visual flair to the otherwise blank canvas of the homogenous soup. To finish off our meal, we had a pecan and dulce de leche Danish. Ori's baked goods continue to offer a choice paralysis-inducing amount of delicious options, and this Danish was as spot-on as my last. The layer of pastry were so flaky, especially the corners, while the pecans added nutty crunch to the creamy base that they were in, with pops of caramel goodness from the drops of dulce de leche. Ori is truly a gem of North End Dartmouth, from their baked goods to hot foods, and is a destination-worthy trip wherever you may be in the city.
