We used the little table top thing to pay and when the receipt printed I was like oh my gosh I got charged $20 for two orders of french fries. The funny thing is while we were sitting there the Table next to us ordered got their food and they all three said we're supposed to have the disco fries too. How did the waitress mess up on that. Shady Rest has been in town for probably 25ish years at this point and is still going strong. I visited for lunch with family after a funeral service. There's a large dining area as well as two semi-private rooms you can reserve for bigger parties. You can call to order takeout. In addition to daily specials, the regular menu includes seafood items, salads, burgers, sandwiches, and sides. Liver and onions and hamburger steaks are also popular. I had a fish sandwich with sweet potato fries. The fish on the sandwich was good, although I wish I had fish in each bite of the sandwich- it was a small portion. I had to ask for tartar sauce, and the server brought it promptly. The fried squash was everyone's favorite, and six of us shared (and devoured) it. The food is simple and VERY inexpensive, and for two sandwiches/fries and appetizer, the bill was less than $25 after tax. The main reason I'm giving three stars is the tipping policies. For one, there's no line to leave a tip on credit cards. Instead, you must request cash back and tip with cash. I saw the notice on the register before receiving my check. I already had cash, as I prefer to tip in cash at restaurants- I know the servers receive it this way. When I saw the sign, I let my uncle know as he was paying for my aunt and other family members and using a credit card. I respect Shady Rest's choice of policy, but wish it was better advertised that tips are cash-only. Our large group only had two servers, and they worked super hard and deserve as much as they can possibly make via tips. This is especially true in a rural area where dollars are tight and fewer people carry cash these days. For a small-town meal, Shady Rest is simple but reliable, with options for everyone, plus the prices are low. The next time I'm in town, I'd order again and cross my fingers that fried squash is on special.

A quick baking on a pizza stone in our oven improved the "crisp". The pie was pretty good! We are from NY/NJ and have our base expectations set from there. So we are always searching for a good pie.
