Great place for freshly made root beer! They sell a gallon of their famous root beer if you want a big guzzle. I like to stop here to get their freeze which is a mixture of ice cream and root beer. Apparently it is different from the shake. Service is slow because of its popularity. Not the best atmosphere since it is a quick stop with multiple food venues. It is also like a gas station store. A&W in Baker is one of our planned stops during our annual cross-country roadtrip (my grandparents used to have a franchise location in Northfield, MN). When we stopped at the Baker, CA location this Summer and attempted to use an emailed coupon for a promo going on at the time, we were told they don't participate because it isn't a "corporate store". Comparable to Carl's, maybe even slightly better. The lady who helped me was pretty nice. She had a difficult customer before me and she still had a positive attitude with me. That was awesome! On our way to vegas, we stopped in Baker to get some food and go to the bathroom. I don't believe there are any A&w Restaurants in LA or San Diego, so I just wanted to get some cheese curds. The service was quick and friendly, and the cheese curds came out quick and we're very fresh and had good cheese pull. If I come back through anytime soon, I will definitely be getting a float or burger, because this restaurant seems to be fresh and quick. read more

Something is definitely not right here. The hamburgers were mediocre, but the fries and chicken were bad. The workers said something about being out of chicken and laughed. Didn't think much of it until we were on the road, and took my first bite. I'm not sure if the chicken had gone bad, or if the oil they were cooked in was super old. There was a long line in front of Subway, so we settled on A&W as we had not eaten at this restaurant before. We had the following Crispy Chicken Burger Chipotle burger with side order of French Fries and 1 Large Root Beer Float. 2 Piece Chicken Tenders meal but with extra fries instead of drink Total came to $20.17 Pros: Flavorful burgers (+1) Inexpensive (+1) Employees let us swap side choices from the standard combo. Cons: Takes time to prepare. It was a different kind of food. Everything was being fried fresh, I think. So, it took a good 20 Minute to get our food. I recommend ordering from here, then filling gas, using the restroom etc. It will be efficient, and you will be on your way to Vegas, or LA with piping hot food :) read more

Root beer floats are made with hand scooped vanilla ice cream. They are not bad at all - pretty good for a quick serve restaurant. They don't fill the cup with root beer because the ice cream makes it froth and spill over. You can add more rootbeer yourself at one of the soda fountains. You place your order at the counter and eat a the common tables in the mini-food court inside a gas station. I would come here for a snack and to take a break from highway driving. read more

This eatery is located within the Grewal Travel Center/Valero Gas Station store. Even though it wasn't crowded, it took a loooooong time for our food to be ready (not good when you're taking a rest stop and the children are hungry). The burgers were "meh" and the chili cheese fries were "OK" at best. My daughter's hot dog was waaaay over done. I'm talking sitting on the rotating wiener roller too long done. She didn't want to eat it, and I don't blame her. The fries were cold and "chalky" (my daughter didn't like those either). Other than my wife's chicken tenders, everything we ordered was "meh" to "OK". I've had A&W at other locations before, and I've loved it, so I wouldn't recommend you judge all A&W's by this location...needless to say, I won't have my families confidence if I ever try to convince them to stop at another A&W. read more

Amazing to have A&W again after many years. Almost missed it because they had a small sign. The floats and the root beer were exactly what I wanted. The staff at the location jump to different food stations: Pizza Hut, Mrs fields, and a couple others at the same location. This A&W is part of a large truck stop complex, one of many in Baker, CA so find a lot of people stopping here. It has a shared seating area with places like Pizza Hut, Subway,the convenience store. Think of a food court in a mall. While it sounds great, be aware the several 1000 (or more) people stop here and they place looks like. They think they do their best to keep it clean, but it's not super pretty inside and has a very cluttered feel. Also, don't expect super friendly service. I wouldn't even call them that efficient. Not really their fault, it's just the circumstances they are presented with. That being said, I always stop here for a Root Beer float because NOTHING beats A&W Root Beer! read more

Stopped by here on the way back from Vegas and, I must admit, for a mini food-court place, its not that bad. I got the chipotle crunch single patty burger, with fries and a drink. While the burger is kind of small, it definitely packs a punch. The chipotle sauce found in the burger is amazing. I loved it! As for the fries, I don't know what it was, but I really enjoyed them. You get a good amount of fries, and mixed with a burger, you will surely be full by the end of the meal. The combos range from $6-7, which is standard pricing. This was such a conflicting experience. I love A&W. I was really excited to get some A&W and I was even more excited when I saw that this was part of a truck stop food court sort of place. I think A&W thrives when paired with other food. But I decided to get their new chicken strips. They were ok but not nearly good enough. The biggest problem, as others have stated, is that there is no A&W root beer tap. They just have it on the stupid gas station fountain dispenser. NOT THE SAME THING! There are other things, good and bad, that I could mention but who really cares. Until this place adds a real A&W tap, I wouldn't bother. read more

All of their root beer floats come in to-go containers and not the glass mugs that I usually have the floats in when you dine in. This place is a pretty average Subway location. The staff is friendly, but with A&W a few kiosks away, I recommend going there instead of this place. Sure, the food might seem healthier at Subway, but it's not necessarily so when you take into account all the add-ons like mayo, cheese and other sauces. For cheap eats, this place is OK. I stopped by this subway sandwich today as I was driving back from Las Vegas. The so called "Sandwich Maker" proceeded to not ask me if I wanted my sandwich toasted or even if I wanted cheese on it. They decided to make my steak sandwich by first filling the bread with the vegetables. After seeing how my sandwich was being made I politely asked for it to be remade as the employee simply just tossed the steak meat on top of all the vegetables. She through my initial sandwich in the trash and WALKED away from the counter and did not RETURN. I left this AWFUL subway and called corporate to complain about the very BAD CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE. Horrible service by the same guy every time. Today I came in for an A&W root beer and I was told they were out and I could instead get Mug root beer from the fountain drink machine. I thought it was weird but complied as I didn't think the guy would just make it up. But IMMEDIATELY after I walked away, he sold 2 root beer floats to the gentleman that was behind me and proceeded to pull a pitcher from a refrigerator and poured root beer into the root beer floats. I obviously noticed and asked him why he just served someone after telling me he was out of root beer. He stated that they use a different batch for different drinks and I laughed and said "you mean like root beer for different types of people?" I came here on the 27th of December around 9:15 pm, driving through baker stuck in Christmas traffic. The line was way longer than the lines for the other restaurants but I hate greasy food so I waited. Soon I realized the line wasn't extra long because people liked subway more...it was long because the kids they have working here are SLOW. Not because they were swamped or anything...but because they were all just giggling and talking to each other instead of making sandwiches. They only had flatbread left because they were too lazy to make more bread. I found this out when I went to order my sandwich and the girl says "Flatbread?" I was like "uh...is that what it's best with?" She told me that's all they had left. Ok, whatever, got the flatbread. The guy that was putting veggies on our sandwiches kept stopping to turn around and talk to his coworkers, and to giggle and open the oven for one of the girls working there when she could have done it herself (I've never seen a Subway employee unable to open the oven on their own). One of the other girls (she had glasses) went to help them too...3 kids to open one oven and put a sandwich in there, giggling and talking. The girl with the glasses then burns the back of her fingers on the oven...obviously had no idea how to operate it safely. Finally it was time to pay, and while I was standing there waiting for my boyfriend's sandwich to be finished (his was taking FOREVER too), a couple of the kids (employees if you want to call them that) were standing behind the register in a little group and talking about how soon they were going to close, and how many minutes they had left. Usually this doesn't bother me but it was just icing on the cake for the unprofessional behavior. They all looked and acted like they were about 12. I understand Subway is a crappy job so we were still polite to them, but it was really frustrating to be starving and to have these kids move at a snail pace because of their laziness. The line would have moved WAY faster with two hard-working employees than it did having 5 middle-school kids behind the counter. I don't expect (or want) people that work at a Subway to be rushing, but when there is a huge line, moving efficiently and not stopping to talk or flirt with your coworkers is expected as a paying customer. I found the whole experience to be very frustrating and was the worst Subway customer service experience I've had yet. The manager seriously needs to hire more mature employees, or at least be there to supervise them because they obviously cannot discipline themselves. We've stopped in many times on our travels, each time hoping for some improvement. This has to be the worst A&W on the planet. I'd like to think that if A&W corporate ever got a whiff of this place, it would close it and issue an apology to anyone who ever chose to eat here. The staff is shared with other "food" outlets in the food court arrangement they have. Sometimes the staff either doesn't speak English or pretends not to. The food is never that good, and even the root beer doesn't taste right. I wouldn't be surprised if they're actually pouring it out of cans in the back. They don't even use frosty mugs. If you're traveling through Baker and are hungry, stop at the Chevron station instead and get a Snickers bar to hold you over. read more
