I know other Yelpers have touched on the pricey ice-cream and possible long lines, but with that expectation in mind this place is a must try (especially if you have kids) or like to try new things (or are a bit nerdy like me, Ha). Yes, it's a bit of novelty, but I read thru the website and asked the counter people to explain "the big deal" of "instant" nitrogen- frozen ice cream and it made it interesting, like an experiment for my taste-buds, an experiment you try over and over because their are just so many choices. My suggestion is to go to https://www.subzeroicecream.com/menu/ and click on the drop-down menu to find their Menu. That is where you will find "How it works" and other interesting info. I felt like it added to the fun. And, like I said the counter-staff were friendly, helpful, and knew their stuff also. They suggested (as Tipsters here in the Yelp community do as well) to go with the children's size; it's a decent portion to try out, and the price is considerable less. Actually a bit more help before you go, it seems that the tips for this place are extra helpful; they offer great advice in a few words. See tips by Amy G. and Nancy Z., some words of wisdom on mix-ins and pricing ( good to know kind of stuff). And I'll off you a review that is maybe less enthusiastic about the whole thing because I can totally see this point of view too: see Elite Yelper Brittany S.. I think it helps. So, whether for a new "date-night" or a family fun day...this is something to let your mouth try out. I'll give you hint as to what the difference is supposed to be...it's the texture. When ice cream freezes normally it happens slowly, with the nitrogen it's almost instant and the chemistry that happens creates different size crystals when freezing. It's supposedly smoother in consistency. Now, I will admit my mouth didn't get the difference and I am pretty sure I've had creamer ice cream out of a box...but I'll go again for sure. Why? Because the thing you can't get from a box or most places is the endless possibilities to create your very own concoction. I love this! And this, too, is supposed to effect taste because all of these ingredients are added right there in front of you, fresh. It's also an option to try out the recipes they already have on the menu when you're new or feeling like decisions are not what you want to do at an ice cream venture, or if your just not feeling creative...it's cool! Well, actually cold lol, very cold! I'm excited to try the non-dairy options on my next trip. By the way, this location has limited seating, but is in a nice area full of other things to do and see if you want to take a walk with your treat. (There is a location in Castleton and Carmel as well) read more

Very popular place. To my knowledge there's no other ice cream shops nearby so we continue to go back but have never been impressed. I'm not a big fan of the texture but it's a unique experience. I assume because it is busy that we consistently find dirty/ sticky tables and floors. If you like to wait in long line to eat your ice cream while seated at tables that's are not cleaned and have your feet stick to floor then this is the place for you! Enjoy read more

I really love ice cream, and really wanted to love this place seeing it's in my back yard. But this take on ice cream just did not work for me. It lacked creaminess and true ice cream flavors. It's much more of a novelty than anything. I would say it's a fun place to take kids and let them experience it. But as for an adult who cherishes tasty desserts, it's not the best. read more

Love this experience! Was fun to pick your flavor and toppings and then see it transform from liquid to icecream. Definitely a fun place to try. I have wanted to try this place for awhile so I was excited when we decided to go for ice cream. The concept is so unique and it's cool you get to watch the entire process. I got the pumpkin spice sensation with ice cream. And it was so good! Boyfriend got the cake batter sensation and that one was good as well. Side note for those who haven't been here you get to pick what kind of cream you want ( ice cream, non fat, yogurt, etc). I was a little thrown with that once since it's so different than normal ice cream places. read more

Worth the experience! Plus, Sub Zero accommodates individuals with food allergies (lactose).

The concept of Subzero is pretty neat. Watching them assemble your flavors and toppings into ice cream with liquid nitrogen isn't an experience you'll get at just any ice cream shop. The number of flavors and mix-ins is almost too much to pick from. They also supply a number of bases, from custard to lactose-free and vegan options, which serve to accommodate the most fickle of digestive systems. That being said, my recent trip left me underwhelmed. I chose their lactose-free ice cream base, which contains coconut derivatives (the coconut flavor was barely present). Being a simple eater of ice cream, my only addition was chocolate. I was less than impressed that chocolate meant a few swirls of syrup from an unmarked bottle. Once my bowl made it to the freezing station, I noticed that the lactose-free base wasn't mixing as well as the others I'd watched. The result was two lumpy, pale brown, semi-solid scoops. It tasted like generic chocolate syrup, something I'd expect more from a fast food chain than a Mass Ave establishment. My friends were pleased with their custard-based desserts, so it's possible that their lactose-free just isn't as good as the others. I'm willing to try it again, next time with Lact-Aid pills in hand in hopes of a better experience. read more

Sub-Zero is located on the popular Mass Ave right in the heart of Indianapolis. I think it's great that there is a freeze dry ice cream shop. Something about the flash freezing process is just so cool to everyone. Maybe it's the steam from the liquid nitrogen or maybe it's just how delicious it comes out. I went yesterday evening and stumbled upon a completely paced Sub-Zero, partly due to some scavenger hunt going on but mostly due to the 90 degree weather, I'm sure. We had about a 20 minute wait between the line and our ice cream being made but we weren't really stressing on it as the air conditioning was a nice break from the heat. All of the staff were very friendly with who I can only assume is the owner being the friendliest of them all. I ordered one of their special recommended creations Peanut Butter Bonds which has brownie pieces, Peanut Butter, Fudge, and Reese's ~ Mmmmm. I've been to other speed freezing ice cream shops but this one was a bit different than others I've seen. They hand stir the ingredients together after pushing the liquid nitrogen in through a piping that runs along the top of the counter. It didn't taste like low fat ice cream and the freshness was palatable. The ice cream was delicious (I don't think I've ever had bad ice cream) but it wasn't the best I've ever had. I really liked their combination selection and saw some others that looked cool on the menu. They also had a choice of many types of bases - lowfat, regular, yogurt, custard, soy milk or non dairy and I thought that was a cool touch. Sub-Zero had a good number of booths, as well as tables near the window. Pleasant atmosphere with a big TV to view, as well. Bonus: They had Monster Energy drink! Just wanted I needed after a 3.5 hour drive! I'd definitely go back if in the area. read more

Crappy service. I've been three times, each time hoping the previous crappy service was a fluke, and I've been wrong every time. The long lines don't bother me - it's great tasting ice cream, and it's a popular place on a popular street. The problem is the service, and I now feel guilty going. 1). Employees need to learn some hygiene techniques - for me, each time they grab a cup and slide it down the counter, their finger(s) go into the cup. NOT COOL. Today when I asked for a new cup, the guy got a new cup and looked at it closely, thinking that my reasoning was dirt in the cup. NO! So I leaned in and quietly (so as not to make a scene) said that it was because his fingers went into the cup. Without saying a word, he turns around and washes his hands! MAN JUST DON'T PUT YOUR HANDS IN THE CUP WHERE FOOD THAT I EAT WILL GO. 2). The workers seem like the unhappiest people on earth. Nobody is smiling, half of them just mundanely roll their eyes with sad or disgruntled looks on their faces. Today, Clairrisa has the most aggravated look of all as if I was bothering her just standing there. It's sad, and to be honest I can't blame them - smashing ice cream all shift must be exhausting. It's unlikely I'll be back, but if I am I'll just get a shake - and I'll be watching my cup. read more

I've given this place several opportunities to win my love... but I still land at 3 "meh" stars. One thing we should establish is that I am an ice cream expert. I'm fairly certain I have tried nearly all ice cream establishments in central Indiana, and I'm not ashamed of it. The way to my heart is through a bowl of this sweet, dairy goodness. One thing I have learned, if you don't have specific dietary restrictions or a guilty health conscious, is to ask the employees to help you pick something. I've gone in and selected something off the pre-made menu, I've designed my own concoction, and I've asked for their advice. Of all through "choose your own adventures" my most successful was relying on the recommendation of those who play with tastes all day. He created some Nutella goodness that I honestly don't know that I could ever re-create. What I do know is that it had Nutella and graham crackers... He had me at Nutella. So here I am raving about their delicious treats, but why only 3 stars? A couple reasons... It's a bit pricey. I understand you are partially paying for the experience, which is insanely cool, but is it worth $6 for a bowl of ice cream? Eh... it's not quite there for me. So while I'd start them at 4 stars, it lost a star because of price. I will definitely be back again, but it's more of a novelty than a place I'd seek out. read more

So , silly me for thinking that 20 minutes on the parking meter would be enough to get ice cream. After 20 minutes, I had advanced exactly three feet in the line. This had better be spectacular. Okay, so I've been here before and thought I'd bring a couple of friends here to experience SubZero. Luckily we stopped for dinner first, or we might have ordered a pizza in line. Ice cream is so so. As someone else said, stick to another yogurt place if your on a budget or have somewhere to be in the net few days. read more

Subzero takes ice cream to a whole new level. It's like a Coldstone on steroids. You can choose from a long list of cream (milk-based, vegan, sugar free, and lactose free), flavors (from standard vanilla to birthday cake), and toppings (we're talking every kind of topping you can think of) to create your special frozen treat. But wait it gets better. The coolest part is how the ice cream is made. Right before your eyes, they spray the ice cream with a liquid nitrogen for 15 seconds. This freezing process makes the ice cream fresher, creamier, and more dense. And trust me, you can taste a difference in the ice cream. It's amazing!! The only problem is that it is usually always packed inside the business and there is limited seating. Definitely a great sweet spot for an after dinner date! read more

Two Monday's ago (4/6/15) the championship game was going on and myself and a friend went to Bru Burger and then to Subzero to catch some ice cream. Great choice overall and so many choices to pick from. What I really like about Subzero is that you can add whatever and however many flavors. The first time I went to Subzero I added literally every fruit flavor there was except cherry and grapefruit. Those are the only ones I do not care for and I added in like chocolate chips or something crazy. The second time I decided to just get peanut butter, chocolate, and cheesecake. Which was DELICIOUS and then added cookie dough pieces. Both combinations were delicious. And what made it even better the second time was that I got to watch the Championship game. We sat right in front of the TV at the booth until it was half time. Overall, I think subzero is a really reasonable priced place and great place to experience. The liquid nitrogen is overall cool and creepy at the same time. I highly recommend Subzero because of the experience and the atmosphere of Mass Ave. read more

This is a really cool, ice cream place! I LOVE how you can customize your order. This location is right on Mass Ave so it gets very, very busy on the weekends especially after dinner time. The line will be all the way out the door and down the street! Sub Zero starts with letting you chose your base to make the ice-cream have custard, low-fat, dairy free, vegan, and other options for your "ice-cream base." The options of toppings are seemingly endless. I cannot even begin to describe it. If open ended choices are overwhelming, they have pre-made concoctions that you can order. My personal favorite is peanut butter and Oreos! SO, what is really cool about Sub Zero is the way they make your ice cream right in front of you. It is an assembly type experience. They mix all your toppings in with a base in its liquid form. Then they stir it up really good and freeze it with liquid nitrogen right in front of you! Overall, I highly suggest coming and checking this place out.l I always take family and friends visiting Indy here. There is really something for everyone! read more

I was looking for a place to have dessert after an interesting dinning experience, so I decided to try this store. There was a long wait line, but the line moved fairly quickly. You get to pick your own flavor of ice cream (which is extremely cool!), so I ordered a small dulce de leche with marshmallows mixed in. It was amazing! The cup size was bigger than what I was expecting for the price compared to some other ice cream stores I have been to. The ice cream gets made in front of you, so you can see the process as nitrogen is used to freeze the liquid. For people like me who constantly think about the sanitary aspects of eating out, the visibility gained an extra thumps up. read more

Great place to bring children, but don't count on available seating. Subzero is a really fun place for adults, but it's especially cool for kids. I had some friends visiting town, and after dinner at The Eagle (which doesn't serve dessert), we decided to walk a few blocks for ice cream. Since there were three children in the group, I knew Subzero would be a hit. The place was packed, but service is speedy. The kids loved watching the "smoke" spill out as the nitrogen is applied to make the cream freeze. One improvement might be a step for short kids to get up high enough to see the action. I feel like the audience who most appreciates the cool science experiment is at a height disadvantage. Anyway, as far as flavor is concerned, it's truly a yummy experience, but the real reason for visiting Subzero is for the novelty of how the sweet treat is prepared. Finally, on a busy night, there's pretty much zero chance of enjoying your ice cream inside the business. It's small with just a few booths and bar stools. read more

While in town visiting family we stopped on Mass Ave to look at all the shops. I was super excited to see an ice cream shop using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream. They have a similar concept in the SF Bay Area called Smitten Ice Cream but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. My husband and I walked in and were floored by all the choices. Not only do you have a choice of flavors and toppings you can also choose your base (yogurt, custard, etc..). My husband put in his order while I brought out a menu to our cousin waiting with his dog. My husband paid for all orders but because his was made prior it completely messed up their "assembly line". Sorry! I knew it was a little bump in the order they do things but it seemed like they weren't able to process the bump. I had to tell 3 people the 2 orders that needed to be made which were already paid for. They all seemed dumbfounded until one just stepped up to fulfill the order. This was all after my husband warned them several times that 2 still need to be made. The ice cream itself was great. The whole processes is fun to watch. I would definitely recommend this place. With that being said employees maybe need to be educated in problem solving. read more

I've been here a few times with clients. There are so many options and variations on this menu. I like that you can make your order as simple or complex as you'd like. I love all the allergy options. The ice cream is expensive but the serving sizes are very large so it levels out some. Watching the employees freeze the ice cream in front of you is fun! The employees are also very patient when I have the kids order themselves. The business does get a little loud when it's busy, but you could always take a stroll on mass ave if it's too much. TRASH!!!!!!!!!!!!! If the rating started at zero-- that's what it would be. I am extremely disappointed by the quality and quantity of the product. If you can't do something well-- don't do it all!!! We should have been alarmed when the store policy emphasized no refunds (this should have been a dead giveaway that the product is TRASH!!!!!!) The same energy used to type up a no refund policy should have been placed on ways to improve the BLAND, non-dairy items!!! Your staff's customer service lacked customer centricity and left my friends and I feeling as though our experience and satisfaction was not prioritized!! The no refund policy is not customer focused and should be reconsidered or removed all together. The key takeaway: SAVE YOUR MONEY -- BECAUSE THEY WON'T!!! read more

This was our second experience at Sub Zero and we will keep coming back! We took our nephews for ice cream after dinner. They were busy, but the lines moved fast. We ordered 6 ice creams and they were all delicious! I had the birthday cake special. It had cake batter ice cream, cookie dough, fudge, and sprinkles! As an avid lover of all things sugary and unique, I was thoroughly impressed with Subzero. When I first walked through the front doors, I was greeted by a friendly, "Welcome to Subzero!" from the employees behind the counter. I immediately got in line next to a colossal metal tank bearing the chemical symbol for liquid nitrogen on the front and began to read through the seemingly endless amount of options on the menu board. You first have to narrow down was type of "base" you want: Custard, yogurt, premium cream, low fat, soy/rice, and almond milk. (Great for those who are lactose intolerant!) Feeling a little adventurous, I opted for the custard in a small cup. Though if you are looking for a good size, I'd recommend the kid size - you still get a lot of bang for your buck! From there I had to narrow down what custard flavors I wanted from the never-ending list - they have everything from Mountain Dew and hot cinnamon, to the classic chocolate and strawberry. I went with a combination that seemed fairly cohesive: cake batter and cheesecake. After you select your flavors, you can add "mix-ins" (which include every fruit, candy, and topping you could imagine) for a few cents extra. I decided on adding Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to my sugar-filled combination. After deciding on my sweet concoction of choice, the employee behind the counter squirted some cloudy liquid from a few different bottles into a chrome mixing bowl, scooped some peanut butter cups on top, and passed it down the line to the next employee. This is where the magic of Subzero happens. A tube, with what resembled a funnel on the end, began to shoot out a flood of liquid nitrogen into the mixing bowl and the employee began to mix and mash the liquid-turned-custard. The fog from the liquid nitrogen, illuminated by blue strings lights on the counter, worked it's way out of the bowl and spilled over the edge of the counter. Half of the fun of my experience at Subzero was watching the science of my customized creation in action! Even better was the fact that once my custard was completed, it was mouthwatering! My bowl was filled past the brim (well worth every penny) and the flavors I chose were deliciously creamy. If you ever find yourself on Mass. Ave in Indianapolis, I highly recommend dropping by Subzero for some scientifically scrumptious ice-cream. read more

Been here a few times now, and have enjoyed each experience. They have what seems like an endless list of possible combinations, and each of the ones I've had have been delicious. Having said that, it seems like you're paying more for a gimmick than the ice cream itself. The use of liquid nitrogen is cool and all, but I'm not sure that it justifies the prices of what you get. It seems to melt fast, so be sure to eat it quick. At the end of the day, you're still getting a good treat from them. There's a flavor choice for everyone, even some good low-calorie options. What makes this place unique is how the frozen treat is made. There is always a line but at least it is a productive line. Often times when I am out, the restaurants along Mass Ave. usually have about a 30 minute wait. The wait here could be about 20 minutes long on an average day. I enjoy all the options you can put into your ice cream. I also think it's uniquely different in how they make it in front of you. To me this raises some questions though. The workers often times do not wear gloves. Once, the worker touched his nose and then went back to work. I am not impressed with the cleanliness or guidelines of the workers. The cashier is usually friendly and wants to chat with you if you are waiting for a few more ice creams. Overall this place is a "once in a blue moon" type of outing for me. read more

Tough to score this one. I may be generous, but hey... I'm a swell guy. Decided to walk in here after dinner and try Sub Zero out. I thought it may be a local place, but after a Google search, quickly saw otherwise. Turns out there's a location 30min from me in Michigan. Oops. In any event, I was super intrigued. An icecream-centric Chipotle that uses metal bowls and dry ice instead of a cold stone a la Coldstone... Hm. I shared a regular size cup of pistachio vegan ice cream with Oreo mix-in with my girlfriend. We weren't crazy about it for the simple fact that there was too much syrup added in. So, why four stars? The guy who made it for us was clearly in the middle of training, and was nice despite his mess-up. We would have mentioned it and tried to get it remade, but they were busy. Accidents happen. Whatever. The texture of the vegan icecream is way too suspiciously creamy... easily the best vegan ice cream I have had texturally. The flavor was also good, but the excess pistachio syrup turned out to be too much and we couldn't finish the whole cup. The nicest thing about Sub Zero other than the options is the price -- it's not cheap ice cream, but it is cheaper than the aforementioned Cold Stone, and you should feel a little less miserably guilty after eating here. With a maker who knows what they're doing, I think Sub Zero could be very good. As it was though, it was little more than just okay. Still, I'll generously give a 4. read more

This is a great concept. Think of all those ice cream chains that mix in toppings of your choice into a scoop of ice cream. Well Subzero figured out an easier way to do it. Put the toppings into a liquid base (ice cream, custard, soy milk, almond milk, yogurt) and then freeze the mixture with a blast of liquid nitrogen. Easy. It also makes for quite a show (bring the kids!). Depending on the time of day (evenings) and day of the week (weekends), you might see a daunting line out the door. However, they operate like an assembly line (one person takes the order and assembles the ingredients, one person freezes, one person, scrapes the frozen mixture out of the bowl and serves it, one person takes your money), the line moves very quick. It's a little pricey, but considering the number of people working inside (most ice cream shops have 1 or 2 employees working) simultaneously, it's understandable. Also, the portions are quite large. A small is more than enough for 1 person. read more

Cool concept because it's a science experiment right before your eyes. You start by selecting a size (small is about 4 dollars) and your ice cream base. Be careful with your selection because it took a year for me to finally succeed in turning Tyler's pure hatred of this place into an "ok I guess it's alright" all because he got a base he didn't like the first time. I suggest going with the original. It is creamy and tastes actually tastes like ice cream. They also have yogurt, vegan, low fat, custard, and a couple of other options. You also choose your mix ins. First one is free and the rest are 75 cents each. If you don't feel like creating your own, they also have creations that you can choose from. Then comes the fun part! You get to watch as they pour liquid nitrogen on the ice cream and mix it into your sweet treat! The concept is cool (quite literally) and the ice cream tastes good however other than being able to watch it be made in front of you, it tastes like ice cream anywhere else. Also the line can get ridiculous. Ike out the door ridiculous. And the process is pretty slow expect to wait thirty minutes to an hour on a busy day. read more
