I have wanted to try this place for awhile so I was excited when we decided to go for ice cream. The concept is so unique and it's cool you get to watch the entire process. I got the pumpkin spice sensation with ice cream. And it was so good! Boyfriend got the cake batter sensation and that one was good as well. The concept of Subzero is pretty neat. Watching them assemble your flavors and toppings into ice cream with liquid nitrogen isn't an experience you'll get at just any ice cream shop. The number of flavors and mix-ins is almost too much to pick from. They also supply a number of bases, from custard to lactose-free and vegan options, which serve to accommodate the most fickle of digestive systems. That being said, my recent trip left me underwhelmed. I chose their lactose-free ice cream base, which contains coconut derivatives (the coconut flavor was barely present). Being a simple eater of ice cream, my only addition was chocolate. I was less than impressed that chocolate meant a few swirls of syrup from an unmarked bottle. Once my bowl made it to the freezing station, I noticed that the lactose-free base wasn't mixing as well as the others I'd watched. The result was two lumpy, pale brown, semi-solid scoops. It tasted like generic chocolate syrup, something I'd expect more from a fast food chain than a Mass Ave establishment. Crappy service. I've been three times, each time hoping the previous crappy service was a fluke, and I've been wrong every time. The long lines don't bother me - it's great tasting ice cream, and it's a popular place on a popular street. The problem is the service, and I now feel guilty going. 1). Employees need to learn some hygiene techniques - for me, each time they grab a cup and slide it down the counter, their finger(s) go into the cup. NOT COOL. I was looking for a place to have dessert after an interesting dinning experience, so I decided to try this store. There was a long wait line, but the line moved fairly quickly. You get to pick your own flavor of ice cream (which is extremely cool!), so I ordered a small dulce de leche with marshmallows mixed in. It was amazing! The cup size was bigger than what I was expecting for the price compared to some other ice cream stores I have been to. The ice cream gets made in front of you, so you can see the process as nitrogen is used to freeze the liquid. I've been here a few times with clients. There are so many options and variations on this menu. I like that you can make your order as simple or complex as you'd like. I love all the allergy options. The ice cream is expensive but the serving sizes are very large so it levels out some. Watching the employees freeze the ice cream in front of you is fun! Sub-Zero is located on the popular Mass Ave right in the heart of Indianapolis. I think it's great that there is a freeze dry ice cream shop. Something about the flash freezing process is just so cool to everyone. Maybe it's the steam from the liquid nitrogen or maybe it's just how delicious it comes out. I went yesterday evening and stumbled upon a completely paced Sub-Zero, partly due to some scavenger hunt going on but mostly due to the 90 degree weather, I'm sure. We had about a 20 minute wait between the line and our ice cream being made but we weren't really stressing on it as the air conditioning was a nice break from the heat. All of the staff were very friendly with who I can only assume is the owner being the friendliest of them all. I ordered one of their special recommended creations Peanut Butter Bonds which has brownie pieces, Peanut Butter, Fudge, and Reese's ~ Mmmmm. I've been to other speed freezing ice cream shops but this one was a bit different than others I've seen. They hand stir the ingredients together after pushing the liquid nitrogen in through a piping that runs along the top of the counter. It didn't taste like low fat ice cream and the freshness was palatable. The ice cream was delicious (I don't think I've ever had bad ice cream) but it wasn't the best I've ever had. I really liked their combination selection and saw some others that looked cool on the menu. They also had a choice of many types of bases - lowfat, regular, yogurt, custard, soy milk or non dairy and I thought that was a cool touch. I've given this place several opportunities to win my love... but I still land at 3 "meh" stars. One thing we should establish is that I am an ice cream expert. Great place to bring children, but don't count on available seating. Subzero is a really fun place for adults, but it's especially cool for kids. I had some friends visiting town, and after dinner at The Eagle (which doesn't serve dessert), we decided to walk a few blocks for ice cream. Since there were three children in the group, I knew Subzero would be a hit. The place was packed, but service is speedy. The kids loved watching the "smoke" spill out as the nitrogen is applied to make the cream freeze. One improvement might be a step for short kids to get up high enough to see the action. I feel like the audience who most appreciates the cool science experiment is at a height disadvantage. Two Monday's ago (4/6/15) the championship game was going on and myself and a friend went to Bru Burger and then to Subzero to catch some ice cream. Great choice overall and so many choices to pick from. What I really like about Subzero is that you can add whatever and however many flavors. The first time I went to Subzero I added literally every fruit flavor there was except cherry and grapefruit. Those are the only ones I do not care for and I added in like chocolate chips or something crazy. The second time I decided to just get peanut butter, chocolate, and cheesecake. Which was DELICIOUS and then added cookie dough pieces. Both combinations were delicious. And what made it even better the second time was that I got to watch the Championship game. We sat right in front of the TV at the booth until it was half time. Overall, I think subzero is a really reasonable priced place and great place to experience. While in town visiting family we stopped on Mass Ave to look at all the shops. I was super excited to see an ice cream shop using liquid nitrogen to make ice cream. They have a similar concept in the SF Bay Area called Smitten Ice Cream but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. My husband and I walked in and were floored by all the choices. Not only do you have a choice of flavors and toppings you can also choose your base (yogurt, custard, etc..). My husband put in his order while I brought out a menu to our cousin waiting with his dog. My husband paid for all orders but because his was made prior it completely messed up their "assembly line". Sorry! I knew it was a little bump in the order they do things but it seemed like they weren't able to process the bump. I had to tell 3 people the 2 orders that needed to be made which were already paid for. They all seemed dumbfounded until one just stepped up to fulfill the order. This was all after my husband warned them several times that 2 still need to be made. The ice cream itself was great. The whole processes is fun to watch. I would definitely recommend this place. Tough to score this one. I may be generous, but hey... I'm a swell guy. Decided to walk in here after dinner and try Sub Zero out. I thought it may be a local place, but after a Google search, quickly saw otherwise. Turns out there's a location 30min from me in Michigan. Oops. In any event, I was super intrigued. An icecream-centric Chipotle that uses metal bowls and dry ice instead of a cold stone a la Coldstone... Hm. I shared a regular size cup of pistachio vegan ice cream with Oreo mix-in with my girlfriend. We weren't crazy about it for the simple fact that there was too much syrup added in. So, why four stars? The guy who made it for us was clearly in the middle of training, and was nice despite his mess-up. We would have mentioned it and tried to get it remade, but they were busy. Accidents happen. Whatever. The texture of the vegan icecream is way too suspiciously creamy... easily the best vegan ice cream I have had texturally. The flavor was also good, but the excess pistachio syrup turned out to be too much and we couldn't finish the whole cup. The nicest thing about Sub Zero other than the options is the price -- it's not cheap ice cream, but it is cheaper than the aforementioned Cold Stone, and you should feel a little less miserably guilty after eating here. As an avid lover of all things sugary and unique, I was thoroughly impressed with Subzero. When I first walked through the front doors, I was greeted by a friendly, "Welcome to Subzero!" from the employees behind the counter. I immediately got in line next to a colossal metal tank bearing the chemical symbol for liquid nitrogen on the front and began to read through the seemingly endless amount of options on the menu board. You first have to narrow down was type of "base" you want: Custard, yogurt, premium cream, low fat, soy/rice, and almond milk. (Great for those who are lactose intolerant!) Feeling a little adventurous, I opted for the custard in a small cup. Though if you are looking for a good size, I'd recommend the kid size - you still get a lot of bang for your buck! From there I had to narrow down what custard flavors I wanted from the never-ending list - they have everything from Mountain Dew and hot cinnamon, to the classic chocolate and strawberry. I went with a combination that seemed fairly cohesive: cake batter and cheesecake. After you select your flavors, you can add "mix-ins" (which include every fruit, candy, and topping you could imagine) for a few cents extra. I decided on adding Reese's Peanut Butter Cups to my sugar-filled combination. After deciding on my sweet concoction of choice, the employee behind the counter squirted some cloudy liquid from a few different bottles into a chrome mixing bowl, scooped some peanut butter cups on top, and passed it down the line to the next employee. This is where the magic of Subzero happens. A tube, with what resembled a funnel on the end, began to shoot out a flood of liquid nitrogen into the mixing bowl and the employee began to mix and mash the liquid-turned-custard. The fog from the liquid nitrogen, illuminated by blue strings lights on the counter, worked it's way out of the bowl and spilled over the edge of the counter. Half of the fun of my experience at Subzero was watching the science of my customized creation in action! Even better was the fact that once my custard was completed, it was mouthwatering! My bowl was filled past the brim (well worth every penny) and the flavors I chose were deliciously creamy. If you ever find yourself on Mass. Often times when I am out, the restaurants along Mass Ave. usually have about a 30 minute wait. The wait here could be about 20 minutes long on an average day. Be careful with your selection because it took a year for me to finally succeed in turning Tyler's pure hatred of this place into an "ok I guess it's alright" all because he got a base he didn't like the first time. I suggest going with the original. It is creamy and tastes actually tastes like ice cream. They also have yogurt, vegan, low fat, custard, and a couple of other options. You also choose your mix ins. First one is free and the rest are 75 cents each. If you don't feel like creating your own, they also have creations that you can choose from. Then comes the fun part! You get to watch as they pour liquid nitrogen on the ice cream and mix it into your sweet treat! The concept is cool (quite literally) and the ice cream tastes good however other than being able to watch it be made in front of you, it tastes like ice cream anywhere else.
