#vegan option This place popped up while I was googling nearby vegan places. It was a bit of a chilly September but I love ice cream. Walked quite a ways to get here, got stopped by someone requesting to buy them food and then made it! Cute little shop. Pick out your base (vegan) and your flavors and toppings (veg options). I got chocolate peanutbutter. Then they turn on the nitrogen. It seeps through the glass so you can touch it. This bowl of soupy flavors turna into this hard wad, then theh mash it about and somehow it turns creamy. It is fast or back to liquid it goes. The taste.... I really dont know. I didnt love it. It was good. It wasnt like anything Ive ever had before so definitely something I recommend trying! Little expensive but its all about the experience. read more

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream - Desserts Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

You guys had me all confused and torn before I even stepped in the door, so it comes with little shock that I ended up deeming this a three star experience. Here's why: Confession: I'm a tightass. So when you tell me you're going to charge around 6 bucks for an average (granted American average) sized ice cream serving, you can bet there's going to be a bit of resistance from Red. Thanks to Deanna P's recommendation, I took the children's serving route which comes in at $3.79 (choose one base and one added topping). How's it work? The draw factor to Subzero is how they prepare the ice cream: choose base (fat free yogurt, soy, almond milk, etc. - great for those with allergies), next choose your one topping or splurge and go crazy with multiples. Next, the Subzerologist (unofficial name for Subzero employees) blasts liquid nitrogen onto your soon-to-be ice cream creation. After a little toying, your frozen treat is ready to go. Upside: My flavor combo was brilliant, if I dare say so. Pumpkin fat free yogurt with candied pecans. I could have eaten three times the child size. However, as soon as the Subzerologist handed it to me, it quickly started to return to it's liquid form. Now you're thinking: "It's called melting, Dummy." But no, you're wrong dear reader. This was faster than melting. It was like the fancy nitrogen didn't do the trick? I would consider this one of those places you go once for the oooooh! and then quickly return to your cheaper alternatives. Fortunately for you, Indy seems to have a yogurt biz on every block now. read more

First timer here and I just love the location for one. Having an ice cream shop on Mass Ave was a great idea. A great way to spend a sunny Saturday! I was amazed on the process of how my order was created. Never seeing the process before, I just stared how my waffle cone filled with custard came to life. Not only did I like the location, the process, the taste was amazing! I loved how all my mixins was a perfect blend and had something in every bite. Visited here today after lunch with a friend and was very pleased! There was absolutely no line when we arrived. The gentleman working was very helpful in explaining the process of cooking with liquid nitrogen and was all around very friendly! I ordered a small cup with original cream with the chocolate flavor and cookie dough mix in which was delicious! I'll definitely make sure to stop by again the next time I'm on Mass Ave. read more

Very awesome place. Ladies were very knowledgeable and eager to help. Ambiance is sort of like a 50's diner. Has the super cool booths and seating. Ice cream was pretty good and watching them make it with the nitrogen was the coolest. Definitely try it and you will like it read more

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream - The nitrogen blast - Desserts Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

This is a such a hype. They put flavored syrup in a milky looking thing that makes ice cream under the nitrogen. Flavors were very synthetic. I've tried mint chocolates and cotton candy. It was very bad. Horrible after taste. Also it wasn't even that cool to watch how the ice cream was made. They start with some of the dairy or non dairy based liquid, then you add the flavors, and you add additional topping to mix with, and in a bowl, they squirt some liquid nitrogen while you are moving around the liquid and makes an ice cream. I would say I like the hand rolled ice cream that you can get. There's non in Indy though. I will not be back. read more

"Cool" concept but not delicious. Pretty simple. Pick a size Pick your cream (liquid) Pick a (liquid artificial) flavor Pick a mix-in (toppings). You get up to 2 flavors n mix-ins and the rest is an additional charge. My husband and son got a regular cream with caramel n chocolate "flavors" n Andy's mints mix-in. He said it was good. My son, the mint chocolate chip ice cream lover said that it was not good. My daughter n I were super happy to see that they had a vegan option. So we got "vegan" cream. Maybe soy milk? Not sure what it was. Then our "flavors" were strawberry n banana. N no mix-ins. Sounds good right??? Wrong!! It was so nasty we threw it out after 2 bites each. It had the texture of sorbet but the flavor of super sweet cough syrup. Why do they use artificial syrup? Can't they use real fruit? For the $10 we spent we could have bought a ton of strawberries n bananas. The "service"??? They were like robots just saying the same thing in the same tone, barely no eye contact. Then all the noise from the smashing of the ingredients together was so loud I could barely hear or understand what they were asking me. It was the most stressful order I ever place for ice cream. Who knows. Maybe if your vegan don't eat this cuz it's not good. Or maybe we got the wrong ingredients. But as we were walking out the place had a line n was getting pretty crowded. I guess they're doing something right? The only cool thing was watching my son staring at the nitrogen fog come out of the steel bowls n fall over the counter. That was pretty cool. But other than that, it was not a good experience. read more

Last night my daughter, boyfriend and I went into Subzero before closing time and were waiting 10 minutes in the line then one of the employees turned to us and said we are closed and told us we had to leave while the other two groups in front of us got ice cream. My daughter was very disappointed and proceeded to cry in the parking lot. Not a great experience! read more

The process itself is cool, but the ice cream tastes very chemical. They mix up the cream and toppings together so they get destroyed in the process of freezing. The results is a very heavy, mono-flavor, thing. I had a raspberry with snickers bites and chocolate chips. My friend got the key lime flavor with cheese cake bites. Staff was rude and kicked us out while we were still eating 'cause they had to close. Not planning to go back. read more

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream - Desserts Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

I'm not sure why this was my first time visiting this place. I've always seen it on Mass ave but never stopped in, which I should have months ago. This place is very different than your typical ice cream shop. You're basically ordering your ice cream exactly how you want it. First, pick your size. Then your cream ( I chose custard but they have other options, even vegan). Then your flavor, and lastly, your mix ins. I for custard cream with strawberry flavor & cheesecake bites and brownies for my mix in. The concept is really cool. They use nitrogen to make the ice cream right in front of you. I loved the experience. The ice cream wasn't the best I've had but the whole they do it is unmatched. I will come coming back! read more

Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream - Desserts Near Me - Indianapolis, Indiana

This review is about our experience on September 18th 2021 at 9pm! The three kids making our ice cream were screwing around behind the counter, screaming on the top of their lungs telling the cashier, who I assume was the manager or lead?? that they should close early. The poor girl was taking orders and trying to control her staff. The three boys obviously don't care and continued to be rowdy in front of 10-15 other patrons. Plain and simple, if I were that poor cashier I would have walked out and quit. Though the staff weren't directly disrespectful to the patrons, it was beyond shameful how they treated a coworker who was asking them to finish making the orders. Those three boys need to be fired. (not to mention they all wore their facemasks below their chin the entire time and weren't wearing gloves or cleaning out the bowls properly before mixing new orders. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

Hmm...I was surprised at the several "meh" reviews I read after my positive experience at Subzero. I think the difference between my experience and the experience of others is that I popped in when the store was pretty dead. Therefore, my time in and out was short, my custard was prepared properly without any rush, and the taste of my cinnamon sensation was quite tasty. Custard and a show was pretty cool to experience first-hand. I would recommend bringing kids to this spot to see the delicious science demonstration. read more

Amazing service and so kind! Not a bad price for the size you get the experience was exciting and fun !

I like ice cream in theory a lot more than I enjoy it in practice. But I do enjoy novelties a great deal and Sub Zero sure is a novel concept. I helped a cousin make ice cream once, way back when and that showed me the process. Sub Zero, flash freezes it with Nitrogen making your ice cream customizable from start to fin. You can even get it yours Vegan which is a very cool touch. The two times I made it here it was packed so, just be patient, take in folks enjoying their ice cream, come up with your specifics and behold the process. The process of watching the ice cream made was my favorite thing. When I saw my Root Beer Ice Cream go from my mind, to a bottle of root beer flavored syrup being pumped into a metal bowl a fissure was fused and I came to grips with the factory being in front of me for the first time, for better and for worse. I avoid flavored syrups but this time I couldn't. Oh well, I was treated to a great show, lot's of Nitrogen vapor and my ice cream formed in less than a minute. With all of my issues I am giving a 3.5 a 4 Star rating. The staff really rolls, kudos to them for that. I love that you get to choose your flavors from a Vegan perspective. It isn't like Sub Zero has 50 diary flavors and 4 non-dairy ones off to the side. There are tons of add-ins which I didn't want but they're there. The child in me still loves seeing the Nitrogen vapor billowing everywhere and the process was cool. I'm sure you like ice cream more than me so check it out if you haven't been to a spot like this. read more

Popped in to find a HUGE line and nowhere to sit. Totally fine. It's cool to watch them mix the flavors of your choice right there in front of you. My kids really enjoyed watching. It's truly mesmerizing. My ice cream wasn't out of this world, but for the experience, and getting to customize your ice cream, it gets 4 stars. My kids want to go back so I'll update this if my socks are blown off next time. read more

I had high hopes for Subzero but I wasn't thrilled. For one, it's weird not seeing actual ice cream to choose from. You pick a size (go for the kids or small - otherwise it's a lot of ice cream!) and base (I went with premium). You choose flavors and mix-ins (more than 1 and you pay extra). It look like someone poured milk in a bowl and threw toppings in it. Then the magic happens and voila - it's ice cream! The process takes about 5-10 minutes, so it can get backed up. My kids' size concoction (vanilla + brownie) was almost $5 -- that's pricey for that small of a dish in my opinion! And honestly? It wasn't that great. It was good, but I've had much better ice cream. I would rather go to BRICS or Graeter's in the future. I guess the reason it's pricey is for the "experience", but I'm going to stick w/ traditional scoop shops. Brownie points (HA get it? because I got brownies in my ice cream??) : the guy making my ice cream was very nice and conversational! :) read more

The combinations are endless! The formula is simple: pick your base, your flavor, then your mix-ins. I want to be able to give it 5 stars but things are lacking. The employees are not the friendliest and it's questionable if some even want to be there. The other big downside is the wait time. The line is usually always out the door, which shows how in demand this place is, however sometimes I don't have 20 minutes to wait for a sweet treat. Tip: Don't add too many mix-ins as they become very frozen in the process and difficult to consume. read more

This is a trendy place and it can be tasty, but fewer points for cost and customer service. I've been a few times, and I agree everyone should experience it once. It's great how you get to pick your base, flavors, and mix-ins. When they turn on the science and the fog rolls over the counter - so cool!!! Recommendations: professionalize staff. When they are not working on an order, they are very loud sometimes talking and laughing amongst themselves - loud enough it disrupts patrons who are sitting and trying to enjoy ice cream. Also: I asked for a cup of water. The dude asked me if I wanted the thimble-sized water cup or regular. I said regular. He filled it up. Began placing a lid on it. Then asked his co-worker if this costs money. She said yes and he began ringing it up. Like, what?!?!? I said no thanks, and he just didn't give it to me. Please teach your people to inform the customer of the prices on water, for crying out loud, and train them better. read more

genuinly nasty. I ordered butterscotch with brownie batter and It tasted like children's motrin.

We have a similar ice cream shop back at home so going in, I knew what to expect and it definitely did not disappoint. They had a ton of flavors and mix-ins to choose from. I went right after lunch so they were not busy at all but I'm not sure if that is the case later in the day. It was overall very good and I would definitely come back. I got a small cheesecake flavored with graham cracker mix in and it was around $6.50 which is on the more expensive side in my opinion so keep that in mind if you're coming here on a budget. Other than that, I would 100% recommend giving this place a try!! read more

I can't even tell you how much I'm in love with Subzero. I enjoy ice cream like most, but my body doesn't like the lactose. BUT, this place has a lactose-free option so I can enjoy my cookies and cream with everyone else. Bummed because we'd just been talking about how amazing the customer service had been everywhere we went in Indianapolis. Rest assured...not EVERY place has great customer service because Sub Zero was accurate if it described service! The girl with pink in her braids couldn't have been more obviously over it and didn't smile, didn't get any of our orders correct the first time (and rolled her eyes when we corrected her), and just had us thinking...there are other jobs, girl. Why work at a place you obviously detest? Ice cream - especially at a place like this - should be a fun experience. If you can't muster up a tiny bit of a good attitude, go work in the back at a fast food joint. read more

Having ice cream here is an experience. I took a younger sibling, and they thought it was the coolest thing! This place is affordable, and if you want to impress someone I would take them here. I love that it is on Mass Ave because you aren't trapped in their shop. We got two small sized cups which was pretty hefty on the serving, and enough for us to walk Mass Ave. The service was slower, but it is heating up so everyone wants to get in. My fav thing about Sub Zero is the taste of the ice cream. You really get the chance to make your treat something special. We have been to sub zero a few times, but this time was definitely the worst. I got a lactose free blueberry. I thought it would be fruit; instead it was syrup like you would use on a sno cone. It was not even remotely tasty. read more

I have had the ice cream here a few times and it is consistently great. I cannot speak for the vegan mix because I love animal products. God gave them to us to eat. I do not trust people who complain about vegan mixes because it is hard to trust someone who will only eat my food's food. The first time I went there, it was for the novelty. Now it is for the flavor. I read a review where someone said their ice cream was "freezer burnt" which is literally impossible considering the ice cream never actually makes it into a freezer. It is frozen on the spot with liquid nitrogen and served fresh. This is a process that is fun to watch and see how it all happens right before your eyes. There are nearly a limitless variety of flavor and topping combinations. I try to get something different each time and as a picky eater, that is something I never thought I would be saying about any restaurant. I have never been disappointed. The waffle cones are actually made on site fresh every day so they are never stale. If someone tries to say they are stale, they are probably working for a competitor and simply cannot compete on quality. Our family has eaten ice cream at places all over and we actually plan our vacation travels around the best ice cream places. We are so fortunate to be able to get this ice cream locally. Nearly every person I have ever had help me at the Mass Ave location has been outstanding. I only say "nearly" because it is possible that there has been a time someone was only great, but I certainly do not recall any service that was sub par. The employees either really enjoy their work or should all get Oscars for their acting. I highly recommend this place which is a rare thing. read more

The kids loved thus place for afternoon ice cream. Huge variety of non-dairy options; thus was an exceptional plus for me, due to allergies. They had almond cream, yogurt, lactose free and vegan options. Once you make your selection the liquid cream is then frozen, in a smokey fog, with your selection of toppings. Shazaam! Yummy ice cream with the cream and toppings of your choice. Waffle cone and fudge drizzle tops it off. All this for less than $6 for a small cup that can serve two kids. **The educational opportunities are abound for this small ice cream shop. Kids see first hand how ice cream can be made, as well as, the power of nitrogen. The taste and quality of the ice cream reflected a natural quality devoid of most additives. read more

If you have never heard of Sub Zero or paid it a visit, you need to go as soon as you can. It might not be your favorite thing every, but it is very unique and worth the experience. I first heard about Sub Zero on Shark Tank. I thought the idea of making "fresh" ice cream by freezing it with liquid nitrogen and making it to order was incredible. When I found out there was one on Mass Ave, I went the next day. I have since been at least 10 times. I have tried most of the base options at this point. The custard is very creamy and heavy, I loved it, but I usually want something lighter. My favorite is the vegan option, which is almond milk. It freezes differently and has a more icy texture that I really like. I would recommend trying to mix two flavors to get a more interesting result. I have had success with coconut/chocolate, chocolate/marshmallow, strawberry/cheesecake, and lemon/lime. Go easy on the mix-ins. Some of them get really hard when the mixture is frozen, and that takes away from the eating experience to bite down on a rock solid gummy bear. The dark chocolate flakes are a great choice. The employees are sometimes hit or miss. Some of them are very talkative and fun, while others will hardly say a word to you at all. If you ask questions and engage them, you will most likely get a more positive interaction in return. I 100% recommend going in for the experience. Kids (and adults) love watching the cloud of vapor roll down the counter as the liquid nitrogen is added to your custom mixture. read more

Me and my partner passed this place shopping during the day and came back at night after dinner to see what it was all about. I would say our experience at Sub Zero was pretty neutral. The ice cream itself was pretty good, but nothing to write home about, I'd maybe give it a 4. The service, however, I would maybe give a 2 or 3. Neither me or my partner could hear the employee helping us and all the employees were loudly chatting and neglecting to really give their customers much attention. I also had to repeat my order several times along the way due to this. It was also on the pricier side which makes sense because of how complex the process is, but I probably wouldn't return because It wasn't worth it for me personally. If anything, Sub Zero is a novelty. Their ice cream is good and service was meh. Might still be worth a try, but visit at your own discretion. read more
