From the outside and location it seems sketchy. The inside is not much better for ambiance! The destroyer sandwich is outstanding, loaded with meat and cheese, very affordable. The old Asian guy slices each piece of cheese and meat when ordered. Fantastic place, don't pass it up if you are looking for a good sandwich. The bread is extremely soft too! read more

Food was okay but a simple sandwich and a rice bowl costing $31 is outrageous. Order at the window, server was polite and wait 10 - 15 minutes. Dining room is also just fine. Overall I don't know if I will go back. Nothing was bad, just processed chicken and overcooked rice are not very exciting. read more

Food~I've been coming here for years but, it's my first time back in 3 years. I have always only gotten the Teriyaki Sub Sandwich (no lettuce, onions, add olives and, no heat!) It tastes just like the first time My Father took me at the age of 10. But, give the other sandwiches a try because I have always been told they are delicious too! Service~He isn't a man of many words but, don't take it personal he is a really nice guy. He takes your order and, goes to the back counter to make your sandwich. Please be patient he the only one working and, he is preparing several orders per phone and walk ins. Ambiance~Is very chill vibes with music playing as you wait at a table, along the wall, or outside (you know when to come back to the counter when your order is ready but, he does call it out). Parking in the front and, along the side it's also a convenient store across the way. If you are craving a sandwich I highly suggest you give the place a try! read more

So Awesome! The food is so delicious everything about this place is charming!! Definitely coming back!

The opinions in this review are not new but after giving them chance after chance, I've decided to go ahead and voice them. Used to be one of my favorite spots to eat as a kid. Somewhat of a Portland staple. It's now just a shell of its former self. - The bread is always hard. Clearly no passion or concern for the quality of their own products. - Almost always skimps on the meat. The man there is notorious for this and this seems to be known by many customers. Tons of hard bread with a small amount of meat. Who wants that? All it takes is the regular stocking of fresh bread and giving a proportionate amount of toppings and this can be saved. I don't experience these issues at chains like Subway, Jersey Mike's, or Jimmy John's, and they likely became the chains that they are for good reason. read more

Sub Shop - This place hasn't changed in 20 years! - Sandwiches Near Me - Portland, Oregon

First time here. Very unassuming place. The sandwich was pretty good, it was just too bready. It smelled really good inside, so i think I'll come back and try a rice bowl. Maybe I'll have better luck. read more

Sub Shop - Torpedo - Sandwiches Near Me - Portland, Oregon

I started going to this sub shop about 15 years ago when I worked in the neighborhood. I don't go super often these days, but they're still churning out consistently good beef teriyaki subs. The same couple has owned and operated forever. I have never had an issue with them, but you come to this place for subs, not customer service, so keep that in mind. Oh, you also don't come here for ambiance. I'm so glad that this place has held on as things get built up around it. Prices have gone up over time, obviously, but still absolutely reasonable and quality has not faltered. I hope they are able to keep it going for a long time. read more

There food is amazing, the teriyaki beef sub is amazing sooooo good..however they did change their hours and did not update their websites, drove there from Vancouver Washington arrived at 7:27pm and the doors were locked and the man inside just shook his head. Oops I'll go again tomorrow...yes they are that good! read more

Sub Shop - Menu prices haven't changed in years. - Sandwiches Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Yum. Been going for 20+ years now. Same owners same deliciousness at reasonable price.

I grew up in this area. My father took me to this place when I was playing a tournament close by when I was 10. I use to catch the bus with my friends and hit this place for lunch when we were teens. I moved away and I haven't been back in almost 20 years. Low and behold the same guy was behind the counter making there one of a kind subs. It has a special place for me. There is nothing fancy to the atmosphere. That all changes once your sandwich is prepared. The meat is cut fresh. The cheese is cut to order. It is not fast but it is a sensory celebration with the first bite. If you get a full sub and especially the full boat. You will likely experience food sweats when you try and finish it. Must try if in Portland. read more

They're fast and reliable. Every order has been incredible and it keeps you coming back! Highly recommended! It's cozy and has been around for decades. A coworker shared her teriyaki sub with me one time, I was instantly hooked. It was a done deal for me! Warm and fresh every time. read more

Best beef teriyaki sub sandwiches in Portland. Ran by the owners, both very nice people. The building is old, but don't let that fool. Great place with a good variety of sandwiches and rice dishes will come back often. read more

I can't believe all the hype about this place. Order a rice bowl with teriyaki beef and nothing was cook except the cold rice. The microwaved it for a bit but it did not cook the cabbage the only thing on the rice... and ordered a hot teriyaki sandwich and it tasted horrible I placed it back on the counter and said these are awful. And they would not remake or refund or replace Never going back read more

The best sandwiches! I love the beef teriyaki! Been coming her for a great sandwich for years!

Simple and flavorful. We love the teriyaki beef sub. Been going here for over 10 yrs.

It gets kind of addicting here. Sandwiches are good, get it to go and don't let the simple interior distract you because the subs are delicious. I wouldn't recommend anything besides the subs, that's what they are good at read more

Fire!! Been going here for years. Original owner still there. Never fails. Definitely a classic.

I've been going here since I was an undergrad in college. I was first introduced by a fellow teammate and I am forever grateful for her introducing me to this gem. Though the Sub Shop isn't the fanciest of establishments, (located accross from a corner store and laundry mat off of NE Killingsworth) don't let the outside, or inside appearance of this place steer you away. Their sub sandwiches are sooo good. The Teryiaki subs are the best off of the menu in my own opinion. The Teryiaki sub comes with soft roll of bread (your choice of half-6-inch, or full), shredded lettuce, terkyaki beef meat, and some tasty special mayonnaise sauce. I am not too sure where the meat comes from or how it is prepared, but it sure does make my mouth salivate. It's so good! I suppose I will ask the next time I visit. Please note that the owners of the establishment aren't the friendliest bunch. They are an elderly Asian married couple and rarely do I see them smile and sometimes it appears that they'd rather be elsewhere, but I'm used to it by now since I've been coming here for years so I don't take too much offense to it, Nonetheless, the Sub Shop is worth a try if you happen to be in the area. read more

Should have gone in myself... waited in the car playing with my phone as a friend grabbed me a teriyaki sub. Was not expecting mayo. I HATE mayo. So, the bottom (unmayo'd) half was pretty tasty. Since it was a big sub, cut in two I also tried one half with as much mayo scraped off as I could. Don't know how people handle it- way too rich/greasy for me then. Wound up abandoning the top bun on that half too. Still, can't blame the guy behind the counter for not reading my mind from the parking lot. I will go back and next time- I'm going in. For the record- what I did eat without the mayo, I enjoyed. The flavor was good, bread seems fresh and the portions are generous. read more

My favorite place over 20yrs the sandwiches are the best, they always have soft fresh bread that gets me everytime. The #1 and the Teriyaki beef sandwich are my favs!!!!! read more

Ordered the teriyaki beef sub and it was amazing. Ordered the full sub (vs half) and the portion was huge for $7.50. Would love to see this place gain some traction, get more customers and then be able to do a much needed remodel. The guy behind the counter was super helpful and nice. read more

Sub Shop - The Torpedo - so much better than Subway and cheaper too. - Sandwiches Near Me - Portland, Oregon

This place is great when it's not busy. The owners are a husband and wife who run the shop. I've only had the Admiral sub and it is good every time. Only bummer is no restroom and the bread is sometimes dry. read more

I travel for work and try to eat at mom and pop shops to support local economies plus try new places. I am not disappointed with Sub Shop! Every bite I took of my torpedo I tasted ripe tomatoes, fresh lettuce, fresh quality meats, Mayo, mustard and my favorite was the soft bread each bite! Highly recommend this sub shop to anyone local or traveling! read more

This place is absolutely amazing. I come here all the time! It's a great place to grab some lunch.

Great subs, same prices as subway but way better. Half a sub for 5.50 fills me up, the bread is good, they don't skimp on the meat. My only complaint is that you have to choose between Turkey and ham if you get the club, a club should have both! Not going to doc a star for that, but just sayen! read more

I haven't been to the Sub Shop in like 5 years so when my co-worker suggested it I was really excited, I forgot how good their beef teriyaki sandwich is. Let me tell you they did not disappoint. read more

Nice sandwich but not a nice place to sit. They don't care about the place. Don't go to the restrooms. You will be infected from something. It's amazing how these people don't care for the place. Don't even have air conditioning on this place. read more

This dude is rude as heck...but he probably makes the best teriyaki sub in town by far. .

This sub shop is ghetto for sure......prolly not up to health code, but they make a damn good sandwich! I love the turkey and pastrami. Prices are good; $5.95 full, $3.95 half for most sandwiches. They can be busy=slow during lunch time, but they are a small operation with only 1-2 people working. It's a good classic sub made by an Asian man! read more

I've been coming here since I was in elementary. I Order the beef teriyaki and the full boat. The full boat taste like a refreshing Big Mac without the beef. You'll love it and keep coming back. read more

Lots of meat and cheese....Huge plus compared to other places! My faves - teriyaki beef no lettuce and the torpedo

An odd sandwich shop where the people behind the counter would rather be somewhere else. The first untoasted French dip sandwich I have ever had. The place looks cobbled together from old treehouse parts. But hey - here it is a day later and no food poisoning. Win for me. read more

Delicious! I've been coming here for years. The beef teriyaki sub is superb- so good that I can't convince myself to get anything else. The place looks a little dumpy but don't judge a book!
