Food~I've been coming here for years but, it's my first time back in 3 years. I have always only gotten the Teriyaki Sub Sandwich (no lettuce, onions, add olives and, no heat!) It tastes just like the first time My Father took me at the age of 10. But, give the other sandwiches a try because I have always been told they are delicious too! Service~He isn't a man of many words but, don't take it personal he is a really nice guy. He takes your order and, goes to the back counter to make your sandwich. Please be patient he the only one working and, he is preparing several orders per phone and walk ins. Ambiance~Is very chill vibes with music playing as you wait at a table, along the wall, or outside (you know when to come back to the counter when your order is ready but, he does call it out). Parking in the front and, along the side it's also a convenient store across the way. If you are craving a sandwich I highly suggest you give the place a try! read more

The opinions in this review are not new but after giving them chance after chance, I've decided to go ahead and voice them. Used to be one of my favorite spots to eat as a kid. Somewhat of a Portland staple. It's now just a shell of its former self. - The bread is always hard. Clearly no passion or concern for the quality of their own products. - Almost always skimps on the meat. The man there is notorious for this and this seems to be known by many customers. Tons of hard bread with a small amount of meat. Who wants that? All it takes is the regular stocking of fresh bread and giving a proportionate amount of toppings and this can be saved. I don't experience these issues at chains like Subway, Jersey Mike's, or Jimmy John's, and they likely became the chains that they are for good reason. read more

I started going to this sub shop about 15 years ago when I worked in the neighborhood. I don't go super often these days, but they're still churning out consistently good beef teriyaki subs. The same couple has owned and operated forever. I have never had an issue with them, but you come to this place for subs, not customer service, so keep that in mind. Oh, you also don't come here for ambiance. I'm so glad that this place has held on as things get built up around it. Prices have gone up over time, obviously, but still absolutely reasonable and quality has not faltered. I hope they are able to keep it going for a long time. read more

There food is amazing, the teriyaki beef sub is amazing sooooo good..however they did change their hours and did not update their websites, drove there from Vancouver Washington arrived at 7:27pm and the doors were locked and the man inside just shook his head. Original owner is still there! His wife wasn't there last few visits and it seems like he has become more nice lol didn't matter tho I still returned!!! I've gotten kicked out on several occasions over my life as a child to adult telling him to be nice to his wife and every time I go back bcus the sandwiches are fire and every time he makes my sandwiches bcus I'm sure I'm not the first to tell him he is mean!! I grew up in this area. My father took me to this place when I was playing a tournament close by when I was 10. I use to catch the bus with my friends and hit this place for lunch when we were teens. I moved away and I haven't been back in almost 20 years. Low and behold the same guy was behind the counter making there one of a kind subs. It has a special place for me. There is nothing fancy to the atmosphere. That all changes once your sandwich is prepared. The meat is cut fresh. The cheese is cut to order. It is not fast but it is a sensory celebration with the first bite. If you get a full sub and especially the full boat. You will likely experience food sweats when you try and finish it. I can't believe all the hype about this place. Order a rice bowl with teriyaki beef and nothing was cook except the cold rice. The microwaved it for a bit but it did not cook the cabbage the only thing on the rice... and ordered a hot teriyaki sandwich and it tasted horrible I placed it back on the counter and said these are awful. I've been going here since I was an undergrad in college. I was first introduced by a fellow teammate and I am forever grateful for her introducing me to this gem. Though the Sub Shop isn't the fanciest of establishments, (located accross from a corner store and laundry mat off of NE Killingsworth) don't let the outside, or inside appearance of this place steer you away. Their sub sandwiches are sooo good.The Teryiaki subs are the best off of the menu in my own opinion. The Teryiaki sub comes with soft roll of bread (your choice of half-6-inch, or full), shredded lettuce, terkyaki beef meat, and some tasty special mayonnaise sauce. I am not too sure where the meat comes from or how it is prepared, but it sure does make my mouth salivate. It's so good! I suppose I will ask the next time I visit. Please note that the owners of the establishment aren't the friendliest bunch. They are an elderly Asian married couple and rarely do I see them smile and sometimes it appears that they'd rather be elsewhere, but I'm used to it by now since I've been coming here for years so I don't take too much offense to it, Nonetheless, the Sub Shop is worth a try if you happen to be in the area. read more

Should have gone in myself... waited in the car playing with my phone as a friend grabbed me a teriyaki sub. Was not expecting mayo. I HATE mayo. So, the bottom (unmayo'd) half was pretty tasty. Since it was a big sub, cut in two I also tried one half with as much mayo scraped off as I could. Don't know how people handle it- way too rich/greasy for me then. Wound up abandoning the top bun on that half too. Still, can't blame the guy behind the counter for not reading my mind from the parking lot. I will go back and next time- I'm going in. For the record- what I did eat without the mayo, I enjoyed. The flavor was good, bread seems fresh and the portions are generous. read more

Every bite I took of my torpedo I tasted ripe tomatoes, fresh lettuce, fresh quality meats, Mayo, mustard and my favorite was the soft bread each bite! Great subs, same prices as subway but way better. Half a sub for 5.50 fills me up, the bread is good, they don't skimp on the meat. This sub shop is ghetto for sure......prolly not up to health code, but they make a damn good sandwich! I love the turkey and pastrami. Prices are good; $5.95 full, $3.95 half for most sandwiches. Wow, freshly sliced meats and cheeses to order, none of that BIG CHAIN, "we slice meat and cheese, portion them then they sit around changing color and losing flavor as the days go by. Everything is TRULY FRESH AND DELISHIOUS, kind and friendly owners who also offer some teriyaki and rice bowl items. The prices are very reasonable and the place is very clean. Got a run-of-the-mill French Dip with Aus Jus sauce, cheese and onions. Very Plain Jane, nothing out of the ordinary here. It was $7 for just the sandwich, which seemed a little pricey, was hoping chips or drink would be thrown in at that fare. It was filling, the sandwiches are monstrous, at least a footlong.
