I really wanted to like this place. Everything started out great, until the very end. The checkout process here is high-stress and uncomfortable. The staff asked me to state my tip amount out loud in front of a crowded salon. Even though I always tip 20%, being pressured publicly like that felt like I was being bullied into tipping more or made me question if I do enough - either way it was a negative experience. It's unprofessional to put clients on the spot this way. Between this and the 3% convenience fee for using a card, it feels like this salon cares more about squeezing every penny out of you than the actual client experience. read more

I will preface this review with I had been a mostly satisfied customer over the years, but money is now tighter and I had saved up for months for this appointment. I arrived and was told to take a seat and someone would come talk to me. Apparently I was late for my appointment, but thought I was early as I had the wrong time electronically in my calendar. But I was unaware that there was a problem. The front desk people were cold to the point of rudeness. The only thing I emphasized to the stylist is that my hair needed to still be long enough to put it in a ponytail. Long story short, the next day after washing it, it is not..it will take 2-3 month to grow out. I called hoping to talk to a manger. Again the front desk person was pretty rude. Would tell me she couldn't understand me because I was muffled, so id raise my volume and she said she wouldn't talk to me because I was shouting. This went back and forth several times. Finally she said she'd give me an email address. I was driving and couldn't write it down. Told her I had no paper or pen..she finally agreed to give the manager a message. Long story shortish, never got an apology for my frustrations. The only thing offered was a no added cost cut to "fix" it. Oy, cutting off more is not the problem. So sadly, after years of good service. I will never go back because of the poor front desk staff and that the manager also has a communication style I personally find triggering and not at all conflict soothing. Very poor customer service for color. They ask you to sign a waiver for color which they believe absolves them of any responsibility to deliver what was discussed during the consult. Then they tell you that you need to pay for someone else in the salon to correct their colorist's mistakes!! I did an extensive consult with Sam during which I showed her pictures of my own hair - NOT a Pinterest but my own photo of my hair - and she said she felt the "lived in" blonde highlights I had, had would be easy to achieve. She said that even if she didn't get it right the first time, she would consult whomever she needed to, to ensure it was done right. I also asked if any of the photos I sent her were confusing, and she said unequivocally that they were not. After 5 hours, which I don't think was necessary, she left much of my hair coppery. I respectfully expressed that this wasn't what I had wanted, and true to what she had claimed in her consult, could we please schedule me to come back to correct it. I was willing to take the time to allow the salon the opportunity to correct any color that had gone wrong. I believe that, that is the best a salon can expect of a client in that situation. Going back on what she told me when she was getting my business, she told me the salon would do nothing to deliver what was promised. When I called for the salon owner and respectfully explained the situation to the lead of front of the house, she did not even bother to talk to me herself. She did not ask me to come in, so a more experienced stylist could do an honest evaluation of whether the color had been correctly applied. Rather, I was told that because I signed a waiver, the stylist could dye my hair any color she wanted, regardless of what she told me in the consultation, and the salon would do nothing to try to correct it. I was also told that to correct anything Sam had done, I would need to make an appointment and pay again. Mind blowing! The salon took no accountability whatsoever. So beware, if your colorist makes a mistake in your hair, the salon will literally charge you to correct it, and attempt to put you in the wrong. After this happened, I saw another review on Google on which this happened to another client. I can tell you, at least in my case, I was clear in the consult, gave Sam an opportunity to let me know if she thought what I wanted was unattainable, and addressed the situation courteously when the expectation that was set was not met. This salon truly takes no accountability for what their stylists promised or for delivering results to the satisfaction of the client. This is unfortunately the second 1-star experience I've had at this salon due to a stylist calling out for the day with zero communication provided to me. I arrived at the salon early and was told in person. Salon claims an email was sent however I received nothing in my emails - even though I receive every confirmation for appointments. I even checked my email in front of the associates. I did l request a credit to my account for my March appointment with Tammy and neither front desk associate could be "authorized to issue a credit". The customer service at this salon is horrific when a stylist calls out. Today is Presidents Day and I was off of work so planned dog day care in order to make a Monday appointment. I went for blond highlights and a hair cut. I explained thoroughly to not use any ash based dyes, I wanted a golden blond color. This hair professional? , said her golden blond is possibly not the same as mine? I not only look like a dirty ash tray, but she ran out of time to cut my hair? I had to sit with a correction toner for 30 minutes! WTH? I still look horrible and my hair is so over processed! I made an appointment to have it corrected and the much needed cut. Mix up in appointments, I was charged for the hair cut I never received. Plus I still look like a dirty ash tray with fried hair! Never go here nor put your card on file! Huge recommendation for Hair Designer Jasmine!! A haircut from her feels like a spa day and you come out looking red carpet ready! I got my second cut from her yesterday: the last one I received from her gave me weeks and weeks of good hair days. Studio Z in general has a friendly vibe, and does great work. They also have a fun little boutique in front of the store. I love Studio Z. It has great hours and is easy to get to. The ambiance is clean and hip with nice design. The staff are always welcoming and helpful. They sell very nice products which have always been worth the cost to me. I use Maggie for haircuts for me and my kids and she always does a great job. She also has done colors and highlights for me with excellent results. She is truly a master at colors. I also love that she tells me if something won't work and why. Highly recommend her! I would rate this salon a 0 if I could. Clearly it does not value their customers. My gel manicure started peeling within 24 hours. If the poor quality was not bad enough, when I called just to get a couple of nails fixed they couldn't work me in. Really? I paid $66 and you can't figure out how to fix your bad application? My Salon Z experience started when I called requesting an emergency correction of a haircut I had received from a different salon, just minutes before. I explained the haircut from the other salon could best be described as a blunt, uneven "bowl cut" of my top layers of hair, and that we are having a birthday party tomorrow with some friends that I wanted to look nice or at least decent for. The receptionist was gracious, and was quick to find someone to help me solve the problem. I was booked with Meredith, an experienced stylist, for 15 minutes from my phone call. When I got to Salon Z, the receptionist made me an herbal tea and reassured me that we would fix the problem. Meredith was ready within minutes and took me back to the "education" room, which has fewer people walking by and no one else working in the same room, which was nice since I already felt embarrassed by how bad my hair looked and nervous about all that had to be done to fix it. I explained to Meredith that I wanted to keep as much length as possible, but that I was willing to lose some length if necessary to make the cut look "intentional." She told me to expect to only partially fix it, and warned it might take months of growing out before I would be happy with my hair again, and said It may look best with my natural curl instead of straightened, to hide the "shelf" appearance of the blunt layers. Then she got to work, kept focused, asked my feedback throughout the process, and had a beautiful result. When I liked the cut right away, she said, "good! I like to promise less and deliver more." After snapping a few pics to compare before and after, she took me to the front and explained the correction, including drying and style, were complimentary. I went to Myranda for a Glo facial with peel and I could not be happier with the results. My skin looks softer and definitely more radiant. It's so nice to have that revealed, after the awful winter-induced flakiness and dullness! Myranda has a welcoming, cheery demeanor. She is professional and efficient, with a soothingly light touch. The experience was lovely and relaxing; there was an electric fire place in the room, the bed had a sheet and two blankets and was also heated - so cozy! It's a week and a half after my appointment and my feet look awful. I'm adding photos to give you an idea. I had a perdicure here on July 25th. Today is August 4th. My cuticles weren't touched and very little exfolitating of my feet. The chair was not a massaging chair. I basically got lots of lotion worked into my legs and my toes painted. I paid $65.00 and this is how my feet look after a week and a half. The woman who gave me the pedicure was very sweet and we had great conversation. I don't blame her. Today my back has been changed for the better. Ryan is the man. If you're in the nursing profession and have a bad back, this is your guy. I'm telling you. We talked for a minute in the beginning - mostly him asking what kind of pressure I like and where he should focus his time. He listened and consequently it was the best massage I've ever had. If I had a million dollars, I'd go see him everyday. He will not disappoint! If you're looking for a fantastic haircut, Melissa is your gal. She's a perfectionist in the best way and will not stop until it's exactly what you want. I can't say enough good things about her! One more aside, as a member of the LGBT community, I have never, ever felt unwanted at Studio Z. I've gone several other places since I cut my hair short and been uncomfortable. I booked a pedicure & a gel manicure here well in advance of my May 21st wedding. There was an initial slowdown in communications when a manager apparently replied only to my original contact & didn't copy me on the message, but I resolved that & was assured that a gel manicure would look great & not chip for at least a couple of weeks, so that getting it two days before my wedding in Las Vegas would be fine. I came in on May 19, the day before we were set to depart, & it took them some time to find my appt because they had another customer with my given name (very rare, admittedly) & had booked me under her account despite numerous emails I had sent w/my full name. Paula did my gel manicure (OPI Axxium). She was very rough with the tools, but I know my cuticles were kind of out of control--still, it was probably the most painful manicure I've had in recent memory. I had never had a gel manicure before, & I thought at the time that she was applying it very thickly, but had no basis for comparison. She had me put both hands in a UV device that I later learned is only intended to cure one hand at a time; when she was finishing up, my pinky nails weren't cured at all & she took off half the gel w/acetone while trying to wipe them down, so she redid them, but she didn't even try to start from scratch--just put new gel on top of the half-destroyed stuff. Then she passed me off to Lisa, who was doing my pedicure. Lisa commented that the manicure had been done really quickly--much more quickly than they'd scheduled for, so I spent about 45 minutes waiting for my pedi. The pedi was good quality but I found Lisa pretty grating--she had a really jerky, abrasive manner while talking to me, & I felt like I was being questioned about the validity of my career path at points. The next day, my gel manicure starting showing visible cracks in three different nails. I called the salon & got a bored brush-off from some guy who said there weren't any appointments for the day, regardless of when I was leaving for Vegas. I sent an email to the manager I had previously spoken with, but didn't get a very quick response. I was fortunate enough to find another salon in town that was able to squeeze me in that afternoon & fix it. The first thing they said when they saw my nails was that the gel had been applied MUCH too thickly--when they fixed it, I also discovered that my original manicurist had only done one coat of color rather than the two she should have done--no wonder it was done so quickly! (It also should have been cured one hand at a time, & Lisa had DEFINITELY not left the UV on long enough for the individual coats, either.) It took awhile to find this out because it took over half an hour to get the original way-too-thick gel OFF. At one point my new manicurist actually called over another woman to "get a load of" the incredibly bad job. I did eventually get a call back from the manager at Studio Z offering to refund my money for the manicure & apologizing--she was obviously very sorry about it, unlike the guy I'd spoken to in the morning. However, after having a COMPETENT gel manicure, it was clear to me that Paula at Studio Z had no idea what she was doing. I consider it extremely irresponsible of the salon to offer a service like that with untrained personnel. I actually held off on writing this review until the refund process was complete--& that's why they're getting ONE star instead of two. After returning from my honeymoon, I phoned the shop to ask after my refund. I had paid with a debit card but nothing had shown up on it. I got some random receptionist to whom I had to explain the whole thing over again because there was no manager to speak to me; I emphasized that I had already been told by Colette that a refund was in the works. The girl was completely silent for about five seconds & then put me on hold for about five minutes. When she came back on the line, she perkily declared that I had reached Studio Z & asked what she could do for me. I pointed out that actually, I was still waiting for my refund & she got flustered about how difficult it is to keep track of the lines on their phones. She then told me that "unfortunately, Rosie handles all that, & she's not here today." (This was the first time anyone had mentioned such a person to me.) I asked when Rosie would be back, & she didn't know, but declared she would leave a note. Then she started to hang up. I interrupted her with a request for a response time frame, to which she replied, "Oh, hopefully soon!" I said I did very much hope it would be soon since I'd been waiting two weeks already, & hung up. Two days later, I did get a call from the elusive Rosie, who offered absolutely no apologies (neither had the receptionist) & just confirmed my address. A few days after THAT, I received a check for $40. Why they didn't just refund my card, I have no idea. I definitely would not return to Studio Z for ANY reason, coupons or no. read more

I had a mixed experience the one time that I went to Studio Z. I was going on broke, but really needed a haircut and eyebrow wax on the cheap. Studio Z had 1/2-off haircut coupons for first time clients, so that's where I went. The front desk was full of very pretty, busy, important-looking men. I stood there, waiting to sign in, until one of them took note of my existence. Rather than asking my name, they asked who my stylists were. Uhh...what? I don't know. I know they mentioned the names when I was booking, but I didn't write that down. *siiiiiiigh*, now they have to look it up this way instead. Gosh, sorry I'm so stupid and didn't understand your process which no other spa/salon in the world uses. This didn't bother me too much until just now, when I reflected on the experience. My eyebrow wax was first. A nice looking lady came out to get me. She was dressed well and had her hair back, except for a long, pretty curl hanging out near the front. She sat me in one of the chairs they use for washing hair, so my head was tilted way back. She then proceeded to do my wax. Problem #1: Her hands (and clothes, hair, etc, but particularly her hands) REEKED of cigarettes. I'm not a smoker, but I know smokers, and their hands don't smell like that. I don't know if she really smokes that much, or if she never washes her hands...but I don't want to think about that. Problem #2: The curl was hanging *in my nose* the entire time she was working on me. It kept brushing back and forth between my nose and mouth. I'm glad I was there relatively early in the morning, because I shudder to think of all the people's faces that curl had already been in otherwise. Between the two, I really started to feel nauseous. She was holding a conversation with a young boy the entire time, which I thought was a little unprofessional, but whatever. My haircut was with a girl named Rae (Ray, maybe?). She was very nice and professional. She gave me a great haircut, didn't over-style it (y'know, sometimes you walk out of a salon looking like a poodle because of stylist overzealousness), and it's still looking good about a month later. The front desk was weird again while I was paying. The older lady who ran my credit card gave me the total due and said, "Is that all you want to put on there?," which is usually a hint that they would like for you to include a tip in some way, shape or form. I told her to please add x-amount of money. At this point, she handed me the money I requested to be added to the card in cash with no further explanation. "What's this for?" I asked, obviously confused. "You asked for cash back, did you not?" she said. "Um...yes...to be added for a tip on the card. Isn't that what you were asking?" "Right. And we have mailboxes for each employee with little tip envelopes that you can use." OH. Well. Thanks for the info. :p It was just so weird. I've been to more than a few salon/spas before and it's never been so confusing. Plus, at other places, the staff (especially the front desk staff) seem to be trained in being courteous to the customer. I went here for a haircut--I've also gotten my hair colored here before--honestly, I don't remember the details about the cut and color. Although in retrospect I wish I didn't take the stylist's suggestion of coloring my dark brown hair to beige blonde (I guess it was an...interesting experience in terms of maintenence). One nice thing, is as a new customer they gave me a pack of coupons to use on future services. I had the best massage experience here with a therapist named Erica. The massage room was really nice--gas fireplace, full bathroom attached (including shower!) I really liked how the massage also included steaming hot towels after parts of your body were worked on--both in terms of relaxation and the therapist used them to wipe off oils. I would go back to her in the future for massages even sans discount. The tip system is kind of odd. If you want to use a credit card and tip, they ask you how much more money you want on the card, then you're given cash and you put the cash in and envelope and put it in the staff person's mailbox. My friend also went here for a makeup trial for a wedding. For bridal services, they typically will not travel to the wedding site. The skill of the artist was good, but her kit was limited--she didn't have a foundation that was light enough, so my friend and I bought a foundation from Sephora for the wedding. The makeup person did insist that the old color was a good one :wince: I'm very picky about makeup, and it's hard to find a makeup artist who has a really extensive kit...you have to pay out the nose. Bridal makeup was only $35 though, a very reasonable price. Will go here again and would recommend it to others. read more

I liked Studio Z. My whole bridal party and I went there to get hair and makeup done for my wedding. The job they did was quite solid. The service staff is sufficiently but not over-the-top polite, and as for the work that they do, it's good. Unlike SOME salons in Madison (such as Cameo Spa Salon, which totally blows), they quote fair prices and stick to them. My hair on my wedding day stayed nice for hours, and my makeup looked so natural in the photos it looks as if I am not wearing any makeup at all (perfect!). We all had a good time. I first went to Studio Z last summer (July of 2010) because it was the first place I could find with an opening to color my hair. I wanted to do something drastically different and didn't want to chicken out. I was paired with Bonnie, and since then I've never gone elsewhere! Bonnie has a fantastic eye for color - she pulled out their swatches and listened to what I wanted, then threw in some suggestions (which was greatly appreciated, as hair color is not my forte!). She said something about throwing in a bit of this color and a splash of that to prevent whatever, and use this as a base because it would look great in the sun and so forth. I said sure, since as I mentioned before hair coloring is not my thing, and she set about mixing it all together. I have to say, the results were fantastic. I got so many compliments on my hair color - how it complimented my skin tone, how it looked in the sun, how soft my hair was (Bonnie threw in a conditioning treatment that did WONDERS), etc etc etc. I was so thrilled with how it turned out that I kept going back. Since I've been a repeat customer, she's occasionally thrown little things in for free (like a conditioning treatment, not charging for a filler, or things like that), which I think is so nice of her to do and definitely keeps me coming back to her! I recently decided to change my hair color up a little bit again, and Bonnie worked her magic. I've again received so many compliments. I'll never let anyone but Bonnie do my hair again! read more

EDIT: Studio Z reached out to me and was very apologetic about my experience. They offered me a refund, cleared up the misunderstanding I had about what I was charged and recommend specific stylists that specialize in short haircuts if I do choose to return as a customer. I'm very glad they reached out to me and it definitely remedied my bad feelings towards them. I probably won't end up going back because it is a little pricey for the haircuts I get but maybe I'll go back for a spa type thing. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I went in to get a high top fade. I signed up online for the appointment, booking a men's haircut and had to create an account. While making the account I had to choose a gender as well, and though biologically I'm female I chose male since I was very clearly getting a men's style haircut. I also had to provide notes for the stylist so I let her know I wanted a high top fade starting at near bald on the bottom and leaving around an inch maybe two on top. When I arrived I was greeted and everyone seemed super nice. My stylist seemed nice too and didn't seem weirded out by my cut request and seemed confident that she could do it. I showed her a couple of pictures too just to make it super clear what I wanted. She shaved the sides first and all seemed well. She used two different clipper guards one shorter on the bottom and one size up on the upper sides. This was already slightly concerning since I know most stylists don't use guards and will use a comb to create a fade but she assured me she would go in and blend them to create the fade. Her confidence was misleading. She mentioned earlier that she would switch guards for the top to leave the length I had requested but I don't think she did at all. She then told me to close my eyes since she was about to cut the top and didn't want hair to fall in my eyes. When I opened them up it was clear she didn't switch guards as my hair was nearly all the same length all the way around. She brushed my face off with a hand towel to remove the hairs but was too aggressive and hit my eye with it enough to open it up. Then she told me "we need to wash your hair to get rid of all these little hairs." I followed her to the sink and she washed my hair. This part was nice. I love a good scalp massage and it was very relaxing. I did notice though that she got water in my ear and now I'm fighting an ear infection. Also I got a stye in my eye where the towel hit my eye so I'm questioning the cleanliness of everything. We then went back to her chair and she asked me what I thought. I let her know it was shorter than I wanted it on top but there wasn't much she could do about that anymore. But also that the sides needed additional blending. She went back in a little but barely anything changed. I realized she was done attempting to cut my hair so I got up to go. She says goodbye, doesn't attempt to book another appointment with me in however many weeks and leaves me with reception. This is where my biggest issue with the appointment happens. I get my bill for the haircut and even though I have received one of the most basic buzzcuts in existence (could have done myself and have) which is clearly a men's haircut, and I had booked a men's haircut appointment AND went so far as to create a male profile on their booking sight... I get charged $35 for a women's haircut. I didn't want to argue about this and it didn't even settle in that I was being discriminated against until later on in the evening so I ask about the $10 off promotion they have running online for new clients, bringing the price down to $25. I honestly really regret paying anything for the haircut, especially since I ended up getting it fixed at a barber shop the next day for significantly cheaper. I haven't called or gone in to complain because by the end of the appointment I didn't feel like I was wanted as a customer anyways. I wish she would have just said that she didn't do a lot of clipper cuts at the beginning of the appointment and the whole thing could have been avoided. P.S. if you're female and want to get a short cut, go to monona barber shop about 5 blocks down. They did a better job and were super nice! And they don't discriminate! read more

I went in for a blow-out specifically stating I wanted it curled with the round brush. My time was flexible to ensure right person. The girl on the phone was courteous and asked her manager who would be the best fit for my service. Unfortunately, the stylist who "loves her round brush" left me disappointed. The Blow Out: She didn't have a nozzel to attach to the end of the dryer so she badly exploded my cuticle -leaving me unable to slide my fingers through my hair with/out constant tangles. I showed her a pic of the type of curl I wanted yet the brush she chose was too large to curl any hair length & when she kept trying to curl one top section over-&-over, never using the cold shot -I knew it over. She claimed "I needed a haircut to get the volume I wanted" ...mmm, my old stylist had just given me the blowout I love without any struggle for volume or lasting curl. The Shampoo: The reason she couldn't get volume in my hair because it was not clean! She gave a weak shampoo -she didn't get the suds in far enough to my scalp much less any of the back of my head. My hair is dense but any pro knows how to do this correctly because my hair type is not uncommon. My Hair felt disgusting when I got home and my scalp was getting itchy. I had no choice but to wash it the next day -a service that should have lasted me 4 days at least. Big Disappointment. **The Salon: On a good note the staff greeted me when I came in. The place was clean without toxic smells. The waiting area was small -arriving early I expected to look at books, but the stylist came out & greeted me within 5 min, so maybe they don't need a lot of space for clients to wait. I highly recommend this salon! My stylist is Travis and he is incredible at what he does. I have fine long hair and the first time I called studio z to book and appointment I requested they pair me with someone who's master at long-fine hair. When I arrived I was welcomed by really sweet staff and a cute little boutique! They had my name along with others on a cute little "appointments today" list. It felt very glamorous and I felt important. I felt that they truly cared about my feelings as a customer. The stylist they paired me with was not available at the time of my appointment due to an emergency and they were so apologetic and reassuring that I would be paired with someone that would take good care of me. I'm fairly new to the SpaZ massage package, well, today was my 3rd time going. I must say the Jill is AWESOME! I look forward to my massage every month! My girlfriend has been looking for a salon, and specifically a masseuse to be her" go to" for a very long time. I think she tried 2 or 3 salons in the area and a couple more outside of Madison. Unfortunately nothing seemed to fit for her. A few weeks ago somebody gave her some sort of gift card for Studio Z in Monona and it was enough for a 90 minute massage. She had been there before for a haircut but not for a massage. I thought things were going to be a bust because the masseuse, at the last minute had to cancel because of a family emergency. But, the lady behind the desk was able to grab a young lady by the name of Paolina on her way home to her family. I was shocked to hear the young lady say she'd stay and do the massage. We had to wait an extra 10 minutes because it took Paolina some time to unpack her stuff and set the room up. But that's understandable, she obviously has pride in her craft and didn't want to just slam somebody down on the table like a fish. when I saw my gf come out of the room I knew she was glad the other person had to cancel. She looked like she had just woken up from a long sleep. She told me she was never going anywhere else and to any other masseuse than Paolina. I never get massages myself, I'm to ticklish. But if I did, I'd go to see Paolina. On top of being very pretty, she also hands the hands of an Amish milk maid, according to my gf, who now has a monthly appointment. Beautiful upscale salon with incredible talent, fashionable clothing and exceptional staff! I have been going to Melissa for my hair and will not let anyone else touch my hair. She is an expert at color and never leaves you less then amazed. I got a massage by Ryan and it was phenomenal, I felt so relaxed and cleansed when I left the massage room. I cannot stop looking at my nails! THIS is what I want when I visit a nail tech. I would hate going to get my nails done because I felt like I was apart of an assembly line. Finally, I've found a place that treats you with some courtesy. My co-worker recommended Studio Z Salon to which I gave them a buzz immediately and was pleased to hear one of their Master Nail Techs , Becky, had an opening the next day that fit my schedule. The salon definitely had that "Hollywood" feel to it when you walked up. A beautiful, clean reception area, products stocked on the shelves, attentive receptionist and so forth. What I was most blown away by the service. The staff was extremely friendly and smiled whenever they passed. Becky did a fantastic job with my acrylic full set. She would tell you exactly what she was doing during the entire process. I found out later that she has her instructor license which speaks to why talks you through what she is doing as she does your nails. I cannot state enough how appreciative I was to her for this. This was my first time experienced being told what was the next step in completing the nails. Very educational. I walked out with more than just gorgeous nails. I walked out with knowledge! I have been seeing Jim Phillips, who has a suite in Studio Z for 4 years now. He's bounced around recently, between a studio he owned on atwood ave, then the capital square, and now here. He gives a great haircut, and when I ask to switch things up some (about once a year), it's no problem for him. I really trust his scissors and have never been disappointed. The cuts he gives are classic and modern at the same time. It's not much work to make them a little bit funky, either. read more

Best salon in the Madison area! I got my hair cut with Todd a few weeks ago and love it! I moved to Madison 6 years ago and have been trying desperately to find someone who can cut my hair to my liking, finally I found Todd! The cut looks great and he suggested a product that makes it look even better. I've been coming to Studio Z every time I visit Wisconsin and this was my worst experience to date. I went in for a simple color and although I do really enjoy my color, I was extremely unimpressed with the quality of service I received. In the dead of winter my stylist did not blow dry my hair completely. She also did not give me a "blow out". She simply brushed my hair while holding the blow dryer next to it. I will definitely reconsider before coming in again. read more

I went here to get a bikini wax. The person who did it, literally spent less than two minutes with me. She took me to a room, that looked like they only used if they were busy, even though we walked by several other empty rooms. The bed has a gross blanket on it, that looked like it probably had other people's hair on it. After the less than two minutes of waxing, the woman told me she was done and walked me to the front desk. There was absolutely no aftercare whatsoever. No calming oils, no towel to apply pressure. When I checked out there was the odd business that the reviewer Heather T mentioned about paying. Having never been to this salon before, I was caught off guard when asked if I wanted cash back when they ran my debit card. I said, no and walked out the door. Now understanding it was meant for a tip, I still would not have tipped this person. As I drove home, I pulled up my dress a little, only to see that there was still wax on my inner thigh, and hair stuck to me that was most definitely not my own (very very different color and thickness). I don't know if they reuse waxing cloths, or if it was from the unsanitary look of the room I was in. I also was bleeding in several places, which again brings me to wonder why I was rushed out of there so quickly with no aftercare. I will definitely not ever go back here for a waxing. $30 for the exact thing I could have done at home myself. I went in thinking that I was paying for expert services above my own skill level, but alas, I paid for crap. read more

My massage with Jill was the tops! I have had massages in the past. Sometimes I didn't feel as comfortable and relaxed as I did when Jill explained the process & treatments available. I immediately felt comfortable with her. After my first massage I knew she was the real deal, a pro. Both with her massage therapy and how she listened to me. Studio Z is the best! Karen has cut and colored my hair for years. She is the best in the business. She is professional and kind. The business is run well and the staff has always treated me respectfully and I can count on them for a laugh. Karen is a bit crazy. She insists on having change in her business. She upgrades products, the salon equipment, staff training and basically everything in the salon. I guess that kind of crazy is just what this type of business needs! I have recommended Studio Z to good friends. One friend recently started having her hair cut and colored there. She loves Studio Z and Karen.
