I know 5 stars is extreme, but before reading this, you should know that Studio Maya has forever changed my life.
So, I bought a 3-month unlimited Groupon to Studio Maya last summer because I was Yelping places where I could take Zumba. As a non-fitness person (or so I thought), I figured Zumba will be a great way for me to get in some activity but not kill myself doing an un-fun typical gym workout. My first Zumba class (and dance class of all time ever) was Zumba in the park with an instructor named Yxia Olivares. As I approached our little Zumba class spot, I spoke with this beautiful vibrant little pixie of a woman with arms like they were carved out of marble and abs that would make a brick wall feel fat. On paper, logically I should have been intimidated, but Yxia was super sweet, friendly, open, "spiritual?" (I know that sounds weird to say but it's so true), and welcoming. Before the class started, she asked if there were any new people and I raised my hand, ashamed, and she just smiled and said I should do what I can do.
So the class starts, and I'm still kinda smirking inside thinking "Zumba is for grandmas, I'm going to be the star of the class!" Guys.....what you need to know about Yxia is that her classes....just add XTREME to the end of them lol. Like, we were doing crunches, arm things all in the guise of fun hip hop/samba/contemporary jazz...i dont know enough about dance to complete the slashes but like...zumba is not a joke. Yxia's Zumba is not a joke (Zumba XTREME!). It's in tense in a "whoa, I just got a for real workout" way, not in a "yikes, this is intimidating and scary and judgmental" way. Planet Fitness says there's no judgement. But there is. Studio Maya says there is no judgement, and truly truly is not. There is only love and acceptance (yes, this whole review is going to be like this).
So fast forward to fall...Yxia was really great, and then I learned there was another zumba class. First, I was depressed that Yxia wasn't teaching that one too, but I decided to give it a shot. This zumba class was taught by Bethina Sayegh. Um.....GENIUS. This woman, also a strong-armed gorgeous pixie with shiny hair (hers is straight thought, not ringlets like Yxia), is so inspiring, and amazing. Her classes are high high energy, they are a dance party where you get abs whether you want them or not. Bethina is a powerhouse who does not stop. She is an energizer bunny. I feel like Yxia is your beautiful celebrity trainer you wish you could afford but can't because you're not JLo and Bethina is Zumba's Jillian Michaels, except you can afford them both by going to Studio Maya :)
I cannot extol the praises of these two ladies, and Maya herself enough. (There really is a Maya! She's great) Overtime, I built enough stamina from Yxia Zumba (XTREME) class to take the other Zumba (with Bethina) and then I was having so much fun in those classes that I also now take Yxia's Samba and Hip Hop classes. (BTW Samba is the best workout of my life. It's pretty much running in place while using your arms and twerking at the same time for 1hr.) Other classes I plan to take soon are the Brooklyn Booty class and Salome's Beginner Ballet class.
Just, I can't say enough positive praise about Studio Maya. There's aromatherapy going on, there's human who are kind going on, you just go in there and you feel more "whole" than ever.
Before I tried Studio Maya, I definitely did not have as high self esteem. I was stressed out nonstop and I thought the only way to unwind was strawberry haagendaas and ranch chips and hours of reality tv. Now, I feel like I'm a fitness person. I tell people "I'm a dancer" with a straight face. I have cute little gym outfits. I'm watching my arms get definition and pounds drop off and seeing myself get better at picking up choreography over time. I'm doing Studio Maya unlimited now (which I recommend highly) and couldn't be happier. Ok this review is getting long...last thing I'll say is I heard Yxia's Samba class is going to go from 1hr to become 90minutes??? That will literally be the best day ever:)
Thanks Studio Maya!!! :) read more
