I am currently on my third Pulsd deal for the Bar Method and let's just say I am OBSESSED. I have always been reluctant to shell out $20-30 for a fitness class or $200/month for a membership. Instead I just dabbled with classes and mostly worked out at home. After a month of unlimited barre classes with their Noho location, I loved how sculpted and toned my body had become. I noticed that my butt had become visibly more sculpted and lifted and overall, I felt more flexible and stronger. After my first month at Noho, I couldn't repurchase their unlimited classes Pulsd so I bought the 10 for $89 voucher for this location. This location seems a lot smaller but the facilities are still extremely clean and stylish. Their class times are far more limited but I make it work. At this point, I've taken a class with several of the instructors and noticed that they each have different teaching routines that they rotate. I love that the different routines keep me challenged and excited to go back. My favorite instructors are definitely Linnea and Alison. Like all the others, they do hand ons on adjustments and will give individual tips during the class. Their routines are challenging but still do-able for me. By the end of class, your core and glutes will be rock hard from "gripping your seat" and back dancing. Classes incorporate a well balanced blend of arm work, pushups, thigh and seat work at the bar, and core work on the mat. I leave every session feeling better than I felt before. The post workout recovery session allows me to stretch out my tight muscles and relax. The only con to the Bar Method is their strict lateness policy. Due to the unpredictable train mishaps in NYC, I have been over ten minutes late multiple times and had to forfeit my class, IN ADDITION to being charged a late cancellation fee of $15. I feel that is a bit harsh since I already lost a class. Still, I would recommend the Bar Method to people at all levels of the fitness spectrum. It is easy to follow and all exercises are modifiable. Instructors are great at providing feedback so you do the moves effectively and classes are affordable when purchased through Pulsd. read more

I go regularly to bar method classes held at this location thanks to Classpass, and I haven't even used my credits for another class in a couple months because I love coming here so much! The staff is so friendly, greeting you by name as soon as you walk in and readily available to help if needed! The instructors are ALL great and really give you a great workout, but while prioritizing safety of form over just completion of the movement. The studio itself is also always so clean and tidy!! For the first time, I walked out of a studio before class ended. The instructor was micro-managing every one of my moves by constantly calling out my name and it came off as condescending rather than constructive criticism or even slightly motivating. The environment was not welcoming for beginners and felt like high school where your peers gawk at you for failing. Between the packed room of 20+ guests and the whole pretentious facade of it all, this fitness studio wasn't for me. read more

I've gone to a lot of different barre studios and classes over the years, but when it was time to join one as "full-time" member, the decision to join Bar Method in Cobble Hill was an easy one. The main reason is the teachers - they really put in the effort to teach me the form and exercises with a tenacity and precision I've never experienced in my 20+ years doing group fitness. This location is also sparkling, friendly, and has essential amenities like showers and towels. I also went there all through pregnancy and post-partum, and it was a really great workout for staying in shape as my body changed. They had childcare until COVID, so hopefully they will bring that back someday! read more

I'm so thankful for this studio and community! I started coming to class in 2016 and was immediately hooked, both by the workout and the welcoming environment. I've never been particularly graceful and don't know anything about dance or ballet so I was intimidated to try it, but I'm so glad I did. Not only do I look and feel stronger from going to class, but my posture is much better, I'm way more flexible and I can now keep a beat. The instructors and front desk staff are the best. Everyone is so warm and friendly, and seem genuinely excited to see everyone who comes in. Plus, all the instructors are experts, so they make sure you get the most out of your workout while keeping you safe. read more

I found this studio through ClassPass and have been really enjoying it. It's a welcoming environment for all levels and the instructors are all great - they learn your name immediately and work to help you improve your form and effectiveness of the workout during the class. During the pandemic the outdoor classes really gave me something to look forward to and a sense of community during such an isolating time. It has been 3 years (including a pandemic) and the Bar Method community has been amazing. The instructors are incredible and are always challenging me to go lower even when I don't think I can. During the height of the pandemic, the virtual classes provided normalcy in my life. A lot of people think barre is an easy workout, but they haven't taken a class at Bar Method Cobble Hill. I've been going to various barre studios (Physique 57, Exhale, Flybarre, Pure Barre, Figure-4-barre) for over five years, and was so excited to try The Barre Method when I moved to Brooklyn earlier this year. They offered a one month new client special, which was a fair amount of time to try out most of the instructors and find a good fit. I was quickly disappointed after the first week, but stuck it out for the month and even attended 3 to 5 classes per week, hoping to see some kind of improvement and/or results. However, it's simply not in the same caliber as the other barre studios I was accustomed to; and it's not surprising that their SoHo location closed down. Lucky for Brooklynites, Chelsea Piers opened nearby and offers barre classes as well as a whole gamut of others - anything from spin, swim, pilates, TRX, yoga, and many others; I call it my adult playground. But back to The Bar Method - while some instructors were better at giving corrections than others, I'd prefer some sort of consistency among the instructors. Like some of the other reviewers had mentioned, the endless corrections sometimes caught me off guard because they constantly call you out by your name in a condescending way, which messed up my flow and took away from the class. These classes didn't leave me with the same level of post-workout rush and the type of sculpting as I did with the other studios. The only thing enjoyable about this place was the friendly staff at the front desk. While I really wanted to like The Bar Method, it's my least favorite studio in the city and I would not recommend it to anyone. read more

Well isn't this a nice little gem hidden in cobble hill? I didn't know this place was here until I perused Class Pass. Decided to take their mixed level barre class yesterday and here is the verdict: I shouldn't have. Even though it says "mixed level" this class was not designed for a beginner. That being said, the instructor was great with coaching me through various moves and adjusting me when needed. Should've taken a beginner class. The facility is nice. Keyed lockers - no need to bring your own- and a decent size locker room with 2 bathroom stalls and 2 showers. The front desk staff is awesome. I might be back but only for a beginner class. read more

Updated April 2019: BM is keeping me healthy and in shape during pregnancy. Woohoo! This year, I'm thankful for Bar Method! BM has changed my workout routine...and my life. You seriously start to see AND FEEL the difference once you get into the routine. My initial trial coincided with one of their fun (and incredibly motivating) "challenges" that they run a few times a year, which really helped create a habit for me. I now see what it means to GET STRONGER and to be grateful for what your body can do. If you would have told me that within a few months, I'd become someone who does 50 push-ups a day, 5 times a week (plus a whole lot more), I would have laughed in your face. :) Thank you so much to the incredible BM instructors and staff for all your encouragement and expertise! read more

I'd tried the Bar Method over 10 years ago while living in San Francisco, and really liked it but didn't make it a regular thing. Fast-forward to my move from Manhattan to Cobble Hill, and to needing a workout I would actually stick to before my summer wedding, and I decided to revisit the Bar Method's Cobble Hill studio. The new client special is an amazing deal (and the studio being close to my place is the other key factor--I can be seriously lazy about shlepping to the gym!). I was already in decent shape prior to starting, being a regular runner, but I dreamed of having what I like to call "bride arms," those super toned, sleek arms that brides aspire to while looking at pictures of Michelle Obama for inspiration. Well, I discovered that a) I loved the workout, which was challenging, but not so insane that I wouldn't be able to walk the next day; b) in switching up moves that worked different regions of the body, I was gaining muscles in places I hadn't seen since I was a high school cross-country runner (hellooooo, ab muscles!), and c) those bride arms were totally within my reach! After the month ended, I was already getting comments from people about how toned my arms were! I ended up buying the three-month bridal package, which is also an amazing deal, and would go to class three to four times a week--and never felt or looked better. Not to mention that the studio is lovely and clean, and the instructors are friendly, positive, and warm, never intimidating. This is one of the few workouts (other than my beloved running) that I've stuck with for a prolonged period...even after my wedding, and now into my pregnancy. While running has started to get uncomfortable, I love that I can still do bar workouts while I'm pregnant, and get great exercise without hurting my joints. I highly recommend you try it! read more

I wanted to love this. After moving over from Pure Barre, it felt great at first. They really take the time to correct you. For me, though, that was part of the issue. I realize that a LOT of people LOVE this about Bar Method, so again, this is not a "bad" thing, it's just not for me. I think I just prefer Pure Barre's instruction a bit more. Why? I felt like my flow would sometimes get a little messed up due to the smallest corrections that seem at times forced. For example, a couple teachers moved my hands forward a few times in the push up postion, and I was caught off guard and it totally created more issues. If I can feel the push up, and my hands are not in a postion that will injure me, I feel it's best to maybe not go down and physically move my hands, mid-push up. I was also not a fan of them propping up your feet with their feet during thigh work. Because of this, I just never felt like I was doign a good job in the class. It alwasy felt like I was sucking. LOL. I'm in my head a lot, and for me, this was distracting. Postive reinforcement goes a long way ( Pure Barre is great at this bit) I just never connected with any of the instructors- a lot of them really go out of their way to learn your name and that's super nice, but the vibe was not my cup of tea. Other than that: Pros: Thigh work is very hard and really awesome if you want a challenge. The price is competitive and fair for what you get. Bathrooms and locker rooms are very nice. They give you ample time to stretch and show you proper technique. There is diversity, which is important; this includes older people and POC, which is rare for barre and this part of BK. Arm section is fun and targets the parts of the arms that need it the most. I never realized how important the deep breathing bit is when working the core, and I feel and see the difference, so that's a plus. They really push this part of the workout! Cons: Endless corrections. The studio was smelly a few times, as everything is carpeted and sweat is, well, sweat. Not sure how often they steam the carpet? They way over-book ; it's hard to find spots at the barre at times and forget it if you are tall and get stuck in a corner. One thing that was super odd for me....when one class ends, they call you in and start the next class AT THAT SECOND. This creates annoying traffic jams and pushing and trying to get your weights in disorganzied bins in time. It's very odd. The music is bad- just bad and not very loud or uplifting. They are VERY scripted, so very little personality during the workouts. The ab workouts are not challenging, IMO. I did not love when they had a spotter/student teacher in the classes. Her corrections were random at best. I really wanted this to be it for me, but it's not. I can see how a lot of people love it though, and I totally get it. The staff is awesome and I had a good experience overall, but I know this is not the best studio for me. read more

The Bar Method Cobble Hill is great. I've been attending classes here since February, and I can really feel a difference in my strength (yaaaas to finally holding on to a plank for more than 30 seconds!), flexibility and overall tone. I did competitive dance growing up, so I'm hyper aware of over using/abusing my hips, knees and ankle since I've already given them quite the beating. Bar Method always makes me safe in my movements. The teachers here WILL correct you throughout class. It never feels judgey though. All of the staff I've interacted with have been really lovely, and push you to do your personal best. If you're new to bar method (or honestly have only taken other barre or Pilates classes but not specifically Bar Method) I'd REALLY recommend trying to take their workshops. They offer them for new clients fairly regularly, and you get a great explainer for why certain movement choices are made. This is not a ballet class, and the movements and choreography are usually small, targeted, and have been designed to minimize injury but work your muscles to exhaustion. It's hard! A lot harder than it looks. You really end up appreciating the stretch breaks after you work through a set of movement. The price is not cheap, especially when you could get a no frills gym membership somewhere else for what seems like pennies... but these classes are SO worth it. You will work hard... harder than you want to probably, and that's why they're worth it. I would never work this hard or this comprehensively on all parts of my body just at a gym. The space and studios have always been clean and tidy when I've visited. The locker areas in the front and back are compact but totally usable. If you like the classes, their app is a really convenient way to pre-book. read more

Always a good work out. Sloan is the best-- amazing and she goes above an beyond the regular routine. She pushes you beyond what you think are your limits and is encouraging and fierce along the way. She also intentionally tries to build a team culture amongst those in the class. Rebecca, Hannah and Paige are also great and are really good at pushing for excellence. I wish these ladies and Sloan had more classes at the Cobble Hill location. I also love the motivational challenges and games that add joy to the work out (Ie: SPF 30, Candy Crush). Amazing how many classes you'll wake up for to earn a pair of grippy socks! read more

I've been to my fair share of barre classes (FlyBarre, Pure Barre, Pop Physique, Physique 57) and while this class was good, it didn't leave me with the same level of workout exhaustion that I usually get from other classes. The instructors were nice and definitely came around a lot more than I'm used to to give corrections, but I think at times that also took away a bit from the class and the class itself seemed a bit disjointed. The facilities are very nice with keyed lockers, showers and changing areas and the staff are lovely. If you are new to barre, I would come here to get the correct form, but otherwise wouldn't recommend. read more

I Love The Bar Method Cobble Hill! It's by far my favorite Bar Method location in the city. The front desk staff and teachers are friendly and very helpful. This location is always clean too. I purchased a month unlimited deal on Gilt because I wanted to see if it was true that you can see real results if you go 3-5 times a week. I gave it a real honest effort and went 17 times in 30 days. Averaging out to 4 times a week. I was instantly hooked. I'm not a morning person and I was waking up at 5:20am to go to 6:00am classes before work. I've done a variety of workouts through the years...bikram yoga, pilates, crossfit, HIIT training, and I've never seen results like I did from going to The Bar Method during the first month. I truly feel like I'm part of the Cobble Hill family. I'm getting married next August, and I'm excited to watch my body transforms before the big day! Best experience to-date at a barre studio mainly driven by the positive vibes of the staff and other clientele. I started taking barre classes this year while nursing my high hamstring injury. After years of long-distance running, I've found the isometric movements to be beneficial in my recup. That said, I'm very much a barre n00b so I can't discern the workout subtleties between all the studios. For Bar Method, I selfishly appreciated the focus on calves during the bar section as well as the thigh sprints. I would love if the ball was incorporated more often in the routine - just to get at those inner thighs. I found that the instructors were comfortable and (most importantly) very capable of doling out personalized adjustments throughout class. In terms of facilities, the space is spacious and clean. I work in Manhattan but live in the BK so I appreciate a nice shower before I head off to work. Bar Method did not disappoint, although I would recommend leaving a couple minutes early from class if you need to hustle to get to work. read more

When I first walked into the class and saw the freshly steamed and soft carpet I thought the class couldn't possibly be that hard...WRONG. This class will make you work hard, in the best way possible. The instructors try to give as much individual attention as possible so beginners can transition smoothly into the class and get the most out of the workout. So of course I bought the New Client Special. Bar Method is kept impeccably clean, they provide lockers, showers, towels, blow dryers so you can freshen up after class. Clean place, tough workout and great instructors. What more can you ask for? read more

Although the studio is beautiful and spacious, I didn't love the class at Bar Method. I felt like the moves caused me a bit more discomfort (particularly for my hip flexors) than I normally feel in barre classes, and the sequence was a bit disjointed and confusing. Of all the barre studios I've been to (Flybarre, Exhale, Pop Physique, etc.), I think this was the least challenging. That's not to say it's not challenging at all. Isometric movements at the barre are hard, period. But Flybarre and Flex Studios have set the bar (pun intended) very high for me. The class lacked intensity overall, and certain muscle groups felt neglected. For example, the abs portion at the end of class didn't do much for me. The repetitive pushups felt random and weren't cohesive with the rest of the class. The instructor was friendly and helpful about alignment, but she lacked enthusiasm and energy. Another note: The music is really awful. I've read that they get music from headquarters and have no control over it, but it's really distracting and outdated. I think I heard a remix of the theme song from The Hills, Britney Spears, and Cher. I can't work out to Cher...I just can't. I will say that this is a good barre studio for people who are new to barre because of their attention to form and alignment. They learn names and make adjustments around the room, which is helpful. read more

I wanted to wait until I completed a month of classes before writing a review for The Bar Method Brooklyn. For reference, I have been doing Physique57 videos at home for the past several years. I then joined a gym, but felt a bit lost, even though I brought customized workouts with me. I did consider hiring a personal trainer, but I have an issue with working with someone who looks like THEY need a personal trainer. I found out about The Bar Method location in Brooklyn and purchased the New Client Special knowing that they have a student membership option just in case I ended up wanting to continue. From my very first class, I have loved going to the studio. The staff is very friendly- Georgia and Paige remembered my name almost right away. My first class was with Steffi, and I discovered that it's the kind of workout that is really difficult if you don't decide to commit to it mentally and work through the burning and shaking. I have also taken classes with Alyssa, Sloan, Michele, Rebecca, and Lauren. They are all in great shape (reflecting various sizes & physiques) and encourage member to challenge themselves. Also, they are all really great at correcting my positioning so that the exercises are as effective as possible. My initial goal was to go 3 times a week, but from the very first week, I couldn't get enough, and have eagerly gotten up at 5:30 AM to get to class before work. Socializing at 7 AM was not on my mind when I started going, but chatting with the ladies that I see almost every morning has been a great part of the experience as well. I did end up getting the student membership when my new client membership expired, and am really glad that I did. I have seen so much progress- transitioning from modified to regular push ups, seeing ab definition, increased flexibility and strength in my quads and hamstrings. read more

The reviews on this studios page have to be a joke. I wanted to try out a different type of barre studio in my neighborhood, so I took the chance and booked a class at this location. I will say I heard mixed reviews of this studio before but figured I'd try it for myself. As I get there and settle in, everyone is very nice and helpful of getting you ready for class. Once everyone was in the classroom it was like cattle in a fenced in field. It was SO overcrowded and there wasn't any room to properly workout. About 5 minutes into the class, a instructor in training was going around the room touching and adjusting everyone, almost to the point where she was in the way and distracting. After 15 minutes I couldn't take it. The crowdedness, the odd sequences that the motions were in - so I left, I figured I could go elsewhere and actually get a workout in. Two hours after leaving, I received a phone call. The instructor of the class asked me what was wrong and why I left. I proceeded to explain that I didn't feel comfortable and it wasn't worth my time. She then hilariously told me that the next time I decide to leave class, I have to run it by them before I step out because they were unaware of where I was... -- umm??? ...This studio is a bust. Their idea of "clientele" is so off that it makes you want to NEVER go back. Let's face it, hounding down customers because they changed their mind isn't exactly the most welcoming approach. read more

They're really special here. I've never come across any studio, of any kind, where I've loved every single instructor I've taken a class with. In person they are all sweet and very encouraging, and all of them can somehow magically meet you once, and then remember your name. Class sizes I've taken have been around 10 (in the early ams) to around 40 in the later mornings and each instructor impressively commands the room in all ways: -Voice, over the sometimes wee-too-loud music -Sweep the room to help make individual adjustments -While the above is going on, they are still aware of all students and often call on a single, or a group of people, by name, to make adjustments -Continue counting, or keeping the class on pace, while all the above is going on This isn't to say they're somehow cookie cutters of each other. Each instructor very clearly has her own personality when she teaches, and she lets that shine through. It's just all the strengths of a good teacher are there, and they exude them in different ways. The classes are also never the same (thank god!). They all start off with similar warm ups, but sometimes they mix it up a tad. I'd like to note that when I say they have you make adjustments, it is no way mean, or scary or whatever negative connotations you have with that word in a class. It is very encouraging and done to the benefit of each students. The studio itself...I love it. I LOVE that there's carpet on the floor. It makes the studio more homey and approachable. Everything is clean and is of great quality. I love the...I don't know what it's called, but the bar where you hang yourself for the suggested 30 seconds to stretch you. I've always come out of class feeling strong and with better posture. Just a note, it seems they're not too thrilled about their students wearing shorts (or pants) above the knee. I took my first Barre class at this studio and I couldn't be happier! I recently moved into the neighborhood and this has been my favorite find so far. The woman in the studio are extremely friendly and make you feel welcome upon entering and throughout your entire time there. Additionally, I had a health issue and I advised the instructor during my first class. Some of the positions were difficult for me, but she helped to adjust my body without calling attention in front of the whole class and really made me feel great about working out and keeping up with everyone in the class. The time slots for the classes are also great. I live in BK and work in Manhattan from 8-6PM. It is nice to be able to commute home and have both a 7:00PM class and 8:00PM class available during the week! read more

Love the class times; start at 6a. I'm a nurse and can workout before my shift. Staff are pleasant,know you by name. The class is as challenging as you choose with modifications. Instructors help you with form to get most out of a movement. I initially balked at the monthly price but after some thought and comparison its not bad. # 1 it's only about 60 bucks more than my cellphone family plan but i gain fitness and strength. #2 the cost can be motivation cause the more you go the less is really costs per class lol Anyways I have fun, I feel good and I fits my schedule which all makes it easier to actually get up and go to class. read more
