I stumbled upon The Good Pilates and it turns out they're new to the neighborhood too and I decided to give them a try. First of all, it's in a beautiful brownstone with a garden out front- you'd never think that there was a pilates studio in there. And the studio itself feels so warm and comfortable, kind of like you're doing pilates in someones living room, but in a good way. My favorite part was doing the side lying exercises and looking out at the beautiful trees. It all felt very idyllic. The class itself was wonderful. Challenging but also relaxing. The owner was equally lovely and personable, very different than my previous studio which I belonged to for 4 years and no one even knew me by name. I will definitely be back!

Haha jokes but seriously it was such a good workout and super intense. I feel like she worked every muscle in my body and I was drenched in sweat at the end. She's high energy & the small class size allows her to adjust everyone as needed. The facility itself is super clean and modern. They have changing rooms, lockers, and a small area you can sit before class. The front desk staff were also super friendly and I felt very welcomed there. Parking in that area after 6pm is pretty easy since everyone basically clears out after work. There's metered spots in front and around the block until 7pm then it's free. Definitely recommend!

Working out has always intimidated me and I was really nervous before my first class but every instructor I've interacted with has been incredibly patient and understanding. Every instructor makes an effort to ask the class if anyone has injuries, no one is bullied into doing more than they can handle, and modifications are always welcome! While the instructors are very understanding and don't try to pressure students to go over their limits, they're still extremely encouraging and do want you to try challenge yourself. I will say that Dr. Brown's Align 1:10 is one of Align's most challenging class. It's very fast-paced (the most fast-paced class I've taken at Align) and I think Dr. Brown's class can be intimidating for some who have never taken the class before but the intention is to keep your heart rate elevated so he means well! Since the fast-paced element of this class is very intentional, you'll have to switch through each exercise very quickly, which is challenging at first (I struggled through my first class). But if you keep attending his classes, it'll become second nature. The style of the class is like a bootcamp class so he will definitely push you to give it your all but if you absolutely can't do something, modifications are fine. I always modify at least 1-2 things in his class and it's never an issue, as long as you feel like it's still challenging and that your heart rate stays up. The Align 1:10 Xpress class is shorter and a bit slower, at least I think so. Both classes are great if you're up to it and trust me, you'll feel so accomplished when you get through it but it's definitely not a yoga class! The other thing that Align has really helped with is my flexibility and range of motion. I originally started coming to Align because I wanted to start weightlifting but I'm so inflexible and tight that I couldn't even squat with proper form. All the classes I've taken at Align have really helped with this issue so if you're experiencing something similar, this is the place for you! Honestly, every class I've take at Align has been so great. If you have injuries that limit your physical movement, if you just get intimidated by working out like myself or even if you're an experienced athlete, I would highly recommend coming to Align! They have a student trial period, which is great because you can take as many classes as you want for a week for only $20 I think.

From sweating buckets in vinyasa to revelations in my postures in align ground to chillin' and meditating in restorative (which I fondly refer to as adult nap time), I find myself feeling transformed as I pour a complimentary tea before heading out for the rest of my day. Also, I have to say I really appreciate that many of Align's top instructors are black women. These teachers are some of the best I've encountered in over a decade of practice in NYC and other countries. Bravo to Align for highlighting an underrepresented group's fierce and fantastic ability to teach yoga.

If it is your first time, I'd recommend starting with the Slow Burn Vinyasa to learn the moves before you move on to a We Flow Hard. They also offer core focused classes called Sculpt.

The class ended with their essential oil, cold face towels which was a really nice touch as it got quite hot in there. The room we had our class in was large and dark, with all the equipment and weights you might need there. The studio has lockers for use and a changing space. Mats are $3 to rent which I wish I would have known beforehand (I booked through Wellhub so maybe I missed some kind of notice about this) and there are yoga towels available as well. I think this is a great neighborhood studio to provide a more community centric experience than some of the corporate chains in BK.

So I used to play soccer but since I'm old and can't hack it now, I recently joined ClassPass as a way to figure out how to keep eating whatever I want and not gain 50 pounds. I've found out that I'm not a big pilates guy. Yet. While this wasn't necessarily my favorite workout I've done so far, I can report that it is FUCKING HARD, and judging by how every inch of my body was sore for two days, I think it will get you shredded if you stick with it. After I told a couple of people I went here, I found out that Solidcore is not usually people's first introduction to pilates. It's like picking knives over bean bags when you're first learning how to juggle. But the studio is clean and fresh (and close to me), the insane torture device they use for class is unique, and I liked the instructor (her allegiance to Beyonce notwithstanding). I think her name was Barbie. I think I may even come back some time soon, if I'm man enough. (So it's questionable.)

This…read morestudio defines intimate - located in a gorgeous brownstone, it's a little easy to miss the front door but it's up some steps and then once you enter, directly to the right. There were about 6 of us in class and the instructor kept things challenging yet relaxing. She was also incredibly kind. Hands on adjustments were extremely helpful and you can tell form comes first here. We used a variety of props such as 3lb weighted balls, ankle weights and the large box on our reformers. The natural light really added to this experience. Next to us was what I think a private lesson going on, so I believe those are offered. Belongings are stored in wicker cubbies and there's a restroom available. I would recommend this studio to anyone in the area looking to improve their health through pilates.
