Let me start by saying Marlo is a five-star stylist. I have been to the gamut of salons over the last 35 years paying a broad spectrum of price points. I have rolled the dice on stylists based on internet photos of the salon and stylist, Yelp reviews, friend referrals, and service prices. Marlo just might be my last stop in a long line of Bay Area stylist dice rolls. She gave me a razor sharp bob, cut meticulously straight and even. If I had a nickel for every time I got a bob and had to go back because it was lopsided (I'm going to estimate 75% of the time - my last cut was 1"off left to right). Not only was the cut pristine, the foils for my highlights were perfectly placed for face-framing (think "money pieces" at front), she did baby foils around my face so it looked beachy and natural when I pulled my hair back, and all were applied close to the hairline (I've had stylists apply 1/4" from the hairline and you feel like it's grown out looking after 2 weeks). We did two shades of blonde so it looked natural. Her color choices were spot on. On top of that her pricing is fair and she's super friendly and warm. I look forward to sitting in her chair again. I absolutely love Kayla! She has brought my hair back to life! I relocated to the Oakland/Alameda area at the end of last year and was quickly on the hunt for a blonde magician. I've been platinum for many years and the damage has been significant to my thin/fine hair. I've been going to Brooklyn for a curly cut for about a year now and couldn't be a more satisfied customer! My hair has always been very curly and I just never knew how to treat it and take advantage of it. The cuts I'd gotten in the past caused my hair to mushroom and i never used product so it would frizz. Thus, I've spent the majority of my life fighting my hair, either by always tying it back or trying to flat iron. I am soooooo BLOWN AWAY! Jennifer is amazing! After so many failed attempts at trying to make my curls look good with Youtube tutorials and avoiding the salon for years, I finally came to studio M for a cut with Jennifer. It included a consult, hair wash, and cut... but I came out with so much more. Jennifer made me feel comfortable through the entire experience, working with me instead of forcing her expertise on me to do this or that. She worked quickly and gently little by little to make sure I was satisfied and not traumatized by the length of cut. We laughed and bonded over traumatizing curly girl experiences, such as the dreaded "frizzy triangle". She walked me through each step and taught me how to recreate the look at home with little effort and maximum result as a beginner. She never pressured me to buy any of the products in store, but I was so impressed by the experience and result that I bought sample sizes of the products used today. Jennifer is very knowledgeable about the trends and guided me to what may or may not work for my hair, again, without pressuring me in any which way. I went in for my hair appointment With my regular stylist, Jennifer Freesia, who is the best - especially with curls. When I walked in today however, I was taken away by the beautiful front room nail lounge. It's brand new, so clean, and so calming. I felt like I was in a soothing spa somewhere tropical. Hooray! first haircut since September, it's now February - 5 months - and I definitely had Covid hair - my ends were thinned out and my platinum roots were starting to come in against my Asian hair. Kayla did a terrific job cleaning me up. She trimmed up my ends to help my hair look thicker and I could not be more pleased with the color, it's soft and natural and my hair feels terrific. Bleaching your own hair also comes with a lot of heart ache and panic. So, after three years of bleaching/coloring my own hair myself, I decided it was time to visit a professional. I had never been to Studio M before. Parking was very accessible, the location is in a quiet part of Alameda, right across the street from a park. It was very cute and comfy. My experience at this salon was amazing! Kayla was very warm and friendly the moment she walked through the door. She is hilarious. I met the owner, Marlow, who was also really great. Kayla worked meticulously to ensure the bleach didn't touch my scalp. She talked to me throughout the whole process making sure I understood what was going on. The bleaching took hours because my hair was so dark, long and also had dye from my previous hair color. Originally, I wanted go with a light pink/lavender, but as Kayla put the color remover in my hair, a light mint/teal color came out. I kind of fell in love with the color and went with it. Kayla was very understanding by putting up with all of my indecisiveness. She explained that she would put a darker teal closer to my roots so when I shower, the color lasts longer, eventually fading to mint. I was there the whole day, from open to close because Kayla had to bleach my hair twice, remove color, then dry and style my hair. I'm so happy with the overall end result! The Studio M salon is a bright and airy cheerful space, tucked away near Park Street. My appointment was with Ann for a pedicure. Ann made my pedicure very pleasant and relaxing. The incorporation of fruit in the foot massage was a nice addition and a new experience for me. Overall it was one of the better foot massages I've gotten at a nail salon. Another surprise was the foot sander thing used for exfoliation, which had a nice smoothing effect. Great experience overall, I will be back! read more

This is a love letter to Jordan, who is awesome and skilled with both a razor and scissors. She was my stylist for 2 years (8 haircuts, according to Vagaro), originally turning an awkwardly grown out pixie into an amazing grow-out journey. She always cut my hair in a way that respected my hair's texture, resulting in the most amazing haircuts that grew out beautifully. She also respected that I was growing my hair out to waist length and wouldn't see her for 4-6 months. Eventually, my senior citizen mom started seeing her, and Jordan somehow turned her thin fine hair into something modern and thicker-looking. Magic, man.... Maybe the fact that we got along really well from the get go helped the cause, but I NEVER got a bad cut/style from her. Sadly, I moved to another state, so I'm sharing her with the rest of you. She isn't the easiest to book, but she's worth the wait. As for the rest of the salon, it's cute, and the other stylists have been pleasant in our short interactions.
