I've never written a Yelp review for a hair salon before but it was imperative that I write one today after my amazing experience with Ngina. Ngina-- hooked my hair UP! Today was my first time going to Studio Chique and trusting my hair with a unfamiliar salon and stylist. The decor of the establishment is not only welcoming but very true to its name---chic! The customer service is superb! During my time there I was checked on regularly, offered a beverage several times, and handle with care and concern. When instructing Ngina on how I wanted my hair, I was not too sure if I articulated my vision (without a picture) accurately, but she said " okay, I got it!" When she swung that chair around, so I could face the mirror, all I could say was " Yesssssssssssssssssss!!!" Not to mention-- the price for the service was reasonable and fair in comparison to other salons which charge unreasonable prices for similar services. Originally from NYC, I've been going to the same stylist since the age of 12. This woman has kept my hair healthy and her cuts are on point. So, naturally, I was hesitant to let anyone else near my hair. So, for the last 3 years I've been making the trip from DC to NYC sometimes just to get my hair done. Finally exhausted, of traveling to get my hair done, I decided to look for someone in DC. Thank you Yelp for introducing me to Studio Chique. Starting with scheduling my appointment, the receptionist was polite, very cheerful and reassuring. I arrive for my appointment to get my hair relaxed with Candace. I was based immediately and waited for Candace to finish up with someone else. It have me a chance to observe her handy work before she worked on my head. I'm very particular about my relaxer, my roller set and wrap and not having to much product weighing down my hair. I set the bar low, so i wouldn't be disappointed. I am new in the area and visited the salon in hopes of finding a regular salon to go to and I was extremely impressed by the service, the time spent in the salon, and especially the hospitality. When I first walked through the door I was greeted by the receptionist who got me started immediately. Following, I was shampooed, conditioned, and deep conditioned with care and efficiency. This salon is NOT a salon where you are left under the dryer for hours. I booked a silk press and after I left the dryer, I was blow dried and detangled before I got to my stylist, Octavia. Once I got to Octavia's chair I was greeted with a smile and she really paid attention to my needs of what I wanted for my hair. As someone who does not straighten their hair often, initially I was worried that the well needed trim would make my hair look odd in its natural state, but she cut and styled accordingly and I am so happy for that. My next appointment is already booked and I am looking forward to being in her chair again. You can definitely trust that the staff in this salon will take care of you, and deliver in a short amount of time. Spa: Marsha massaged my shoulder back into proper range of motion Hair: can't remember their names but they were all great. Super positive: there was no waiting under the dryer unnecessarily while someone else is getting done. I was under just as long as I needed to be. The silkening press was done so well. This review is for hair services only. I have been going to Candice almost 2 years now. I have lived in several major cities and had my hair done by many different stylists so I know what I am looking for. As far as this salon, I usually get out in a decent time and am pleased with my styles which is a plus. They have an online booking system but no app that I know of. Candice is very receptive to my vision for my hair styles. I did have one sanfu with a semipermanent coloring treatment- long story short the color was nothing as I envisioned and faded fast. However I cannot put that completely on her technique. All in all I would recommend this salon. read more

I am writing this review to let anyone interested in going to this place, to please think twice. DON"T GO Service was not delivered and the same goes for quality. If you are tempted to click away and purchase a Groupon please don't, do yourself a favor. Apart from asking me few times for extra charges on the service. Very unprofessional, owner of this salon didn't have a clue. 24 hours later, I payed for the same service I never got it in this place in another salon. I got quality, the look i expected in the first place and most important ,, employees and salon owner were interested in getting the service done without asking for extra charges. I called for a last minute appointment for my natural hair. I had no wait at all. The service was excellent and the decor was comfortable. I have worn natural hair for three years and wanted a change. I got a silken press and couldn't believe the results! My hair actually looked silky! I got 2 monthly facials and a massage. It was great. My skin was glowing and the deep tissue massage helped loosen my stiff muscles after foot surgery. Marsha deep tissue and Tyra facial were much need healing for my body. They were lovely very knowledgeable technicians. I also learned so much about caring for my body inner and outer. My hair remained straight and glossy for almost 30 days after my silk press and trim with Dre. Services with tip ran me $95 but it was well worth it. I also received a deep conditioner and top notch service. The shop was very clean and the staff was very welcoming. I have never been at a salon were all of the stylist work together to get a client out of the door. Conveniently located off the green line Shaw metro this place is stellar and I would be back as well as refer to friends and family. I'm very new in the area and Studio Chique was suggested to me. I've got a DevaCut for the first and I'm not disappointed! I wanted my hair to have more volume and my curls to pop more, mission accomplished! Wait for the next day to really see the result because curls tend to be more beautiful the day after your wash. The salon is nicely decorated, it's very modern and classy. The employees are so nice, I appreciated the warm welcome of the girl at the desk and Ngina's kindness. I was booked with Candace and was more than pleased with her attentiveness, care and regard for my tender-head. I am extremely loyal and have a hard time bouncing around from place to place. I feel very comfortable with Candace and appreciate how sweet she is whenever I get my hair done. I live close by - and like to support local businesses (btw this is NOT located in a rough area!). However, I will not be going to studio chique again. It was my 1st visit for a waxing. Lisa - who I was scheduled with was not there for my 10:30 appointment. After the receptionist texted her - she responded that she wouldn't be able to make it. She stated she was in an accident - which I highly doubt, and either way - she would have been late for our 10:30 - accident or no accident. Complete unprofessionalism. If you are going to treat new clients with such dis-regard, I don't see studio chique being around for much longer. Can't survive with the raising rents around here with that kind of customer service. And agree with prior posters - there was a odd smell. read more

I visited this salon after reading a number of positive Yelp reviews. I've been going to the same stylist in Baltimore for the last 6 years, so switching to someone new with no prior recommendation was certainly a risk. Studio Chique's online appointment process was easy and I snagged an appointment with Octavia on a Friday. I arrived 15 minutes early to my 6:30pm appointment and was promptly greeted. Hair was shampooed and within another 15 minutes, I was sitting under the dryer letting my conditioner set it. I have natural hair and I appreciated this extra step. Next, I was "pre-blow dried" by the stylist's assistant. After this step, the pace of process began to slow down, which is why I can only give 4/5 stars. I probably waited 40 minutes between my "pre-blow dry" and actually sitting in Octavia's chair. There were 3 women ahead of me. By the time I actually left the salon, it was close to 9pm. When I did finally make it into Octavia's chair, I expressed my concern about heat damage. I've been growing my hair out for nearly 5 years, but I am extremely sensitive to heat. I told her that this was the first time in almost a year that I had straightened and that I was weary. She assured me that the heat protectant in the shampoo/conditioner + her expertise would prevent any damage. I want to note that this salon DOES NOT apply heat protectant after conditioning because it's "built in" to their shampoo/conditioner. In the end, my results were great! Octavia trimmed about 1.5 inches from hair and my hair was EXTREMELY straight. She was professional and took the time to listen to my concerns regarding length, maintenance, and heat damage. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because after washing my hair, I do in fact have heat damage in the areas that I told her were the most sensitive. There was a lot of heat involved in this process, considering I was pre-blow dried by Octavia's assistant, blow dried by Octavia, and then flat ironed. If you are natural and concerned about heat damage, I highly advise you to express this concern to Octavia or whoever does your hair. I will definitely be returning to this salon, but when I do, I'll be more adamant about voicing my concerns about heat damage. read more

I first walked into this salon in 2015, and immediately felt the good atmosphere and professionalism. Fast forwarding to now in the very end of 2019. It's sad to say my time is up here. From the confusion, to the lack of responsibility, and my time and money being absolutely wasted, I will not be coming back. My very last experience here is absolutely HEARTBREAKING. In September I bought 4 bundles already colored red priced at 800$ (this is NOT INCLUDING the sew in+plus the add ons I got.) so everything was roughly 1,200!!! Yes y'all heard me correctly 1,200. For hair plus sew in!!!! BUT. Because I was such a fan of studio chique and my ex hairstylist, I dropped the money because I knew I would be more than happy and grateful for my services!!!! That was not the case this time!!!!!!! the hair I bought at 800 dollars was literally TRASH! This hair would shed ALL DAY!!!! ALLLLLL DAY! My lover was at the point where it would make him crawl seeing hair all over his house in every room, it literally caused issues between me and my roommate and I because she saw hair in the kitchen, bathroom, hallway and it literally made her upset with me!!!! This isn't where it ends, the hair also literally felt like yaki hair!!!! Literally some cheap hair from beauty supply store!!!! At this point I'm LIVID! I tell my ex hairstylist and she says just some words and how I should get a refund. The owner Ngina reaches out about how she could do a CONDITIONING treatmeant and how a refund isn't possible (LOL) then I leave the conversation alone for a month. I come back a month later because it just really hit me that I spent soooo much money on this service to just be stuck with such horrible nasty hair that sheds all freaking day!!! She then tells me she can give me hair plus color it back to original color red on my last install and sew in for free even add a closure for free.....I'm a little bit relieved at this point. I then make my appointment for that week to get my free hair and service ( which in my mind I feel ok, but in my mind I'm much happier to just get my hard earned money back) but I say whatever at this point. I get in on a Friday to get my install and hair from my ex stylist. Ngina comes over to show me my new hair bundles and the color. I then ask for the closure as well (because mind you she said I could also get a closure for free) and she looks confused and said you never said you wanted a closure and because it's last minute it would be a 50 dollar fee I'm like HUH? THEN, I peeped my ex hairstylist with a attitude because I was getting a install for free and I overheard her talking about how I should be charged for install. MIND YOU, I have always taken great care of this girl!! 70 plus dollar tips!!!!! And this isn't even Hollywood, this is DC honey! My stomach is just crawling at this point and I'm talking to God in my head like how did I end up in this ghetto ungrateful mess!!????? The division in this salon is so intense its just so demonic and plain out terrible!!!! After I finish up with my service I noticed the color was so much different then my first install and the whole reason why I spent so much money on the hair is because of the COLOR!! The closure I also got was so dark on top and didn't flow with the rest of my look. It's like everything was kind of put together with no care at all! I then call the salon AGAIN to tell them how I am just so unhappy and could they atleast give me my color back. The owner tells me 350 to get my color back because they have to lift out color and do it over. OK WHOSE FAULT IS THAT???? Didn't I spend 1,200 in the first place to get what I asked for!!!! LASTLY, I am warning you! Whenever there is a mess up from this salon , the OWNER Ngina never never never never can take criticism or accountability... it's always "My buisiness is top notch this .. and my team is this and that." BEWARE!!!!!!!!! I am very upset that the prices/promotions were not honored at my time of service. I questioned the young lady upon checkout only to be told that my service was the price she quoted me. I paid $20 over the amount for a service. If I would have known up front, I would NOT have booked with Studio Chique. I contacted the Studio when I had a moment to collect my thoughts only to be told that I could receive the promotion if I booked in the studio at the time of my appointment to receive a discount on my next visit. I really enjoyed this salon. When I came in I did have to wait around 15-20 mins to get started even with my appt but I expect that at any salon. The receptionist was extremely attentive and checked in with me every few mins with a status. My stylist was Nagina and I chose a deva cut. She asked a lot of questions and walked me through her entire process so I was comfortable with her cutting my hair. I've had some horror stories from devacuts at fiddleheads so I really appreciated this. I really liked my end results for the cut, she incorporated everything I asked for. The only thing that could use some worK was that my shampoo was not thorough and I left with a lot of buildup on my scalp and the gel they used to style my wash and go made my hair very brittle and dry I definitely needed sone thing with more moisture. But I will def let them know when I go again which I plan to do because the service was amazing and priced well. read more

Hi all, I just got my hair colored today at Studio Chique. It came out so amazing!!! My natural hair color is black and I went for a brownish red similar to Issa Rae's hair color in the movie "The Photograph". I've always been afraid to color my hair but I knew I'd be in good hands with Clara. She did beautiful silk presses and trims for me in the past so I felt comfortable trusting her for my first hair color session followed by a silk press. My hair is natural and was super tangled (especially at the root) when I got the salon. Clara gently detangled it which I really appreciated (I'm a bit tender headed). The coloring process went smoothly, we started on time and it didn't take long. The color is exactly what I was looking for and it goes so well with my skin tone. I was worried that the hair color would dry out my hair but I left the salon with soft healthy hair. Clara is so wonderful to work with, I'm always happy with the way my hair looks after a session with her. I love Studio Chique, everyone is so professional and so talented. The ambiance of the salon is lovely, I like how its decorated and its always very clean. I highly recommend this salon. If i can give 0 stars i would, I find it highly unprofessional and shocking for them to send me a text about my stylist Nia two days prior to my appointment. I love the way Nia does my hair and for them to slander Nia's character really bothered me, and i will never be back. It's below standards to have Nia still on the website for me to book with her, but inform me that she is no longer there only shortly before my appointment. It's very demeaning that they told me the salon phone was stolen and tried to charge me for my appointment that i made them aware of canceling . Instead of giving me Nia's information they offered me to book with another stylist, and any personal information shouldn't have been shared about Nia's departure from the salon. She is not only funny, but she listens to what you are looking for and did an amazing job working out the tough knots in my upper back, shoulders, and neck. I was a client of Ngina's a few years back when I lived in D.C. In returning to area, I visited the salon as I remember it having reasonable prices and remembering that I was pleased with my hair looked when I left Ngina's chair. Since that time, Ngina's salon as evolved to become "Studio Chique." As someone who gets her hair pressed fairly regularly, my hair withstands heat well (I've left many Dominican salons in tact), but I was in the market for something less expensive than my $100/visit trips at the salon I usually frequent. So 2 weeks ago, Candice did my hair as a walk-in appointment. I have natural hair, and specified that I did NOT want to use a hot comb and made sure to ask as to whether Candice was using heat protectant. She complied on both counts. My hair looked really great, so I booked an appointment two weeks later. My second experience was not as nice as the first -- a longer wait, a much hotter blow dryer that had me curious about what my roots would look like on wash day, and surveying a young lady in the salon getting her black hair treated with a double process blonde on the same day -- her hair was limp and stringy and uneven-looking from damage. It even broke a bit as they blow dried it. No one seemed to be concerned about this as they continue to do her hair. Well, today is my turn. I washed my hair -- and there is extensive heat damage throughout, likely from the flaming hot dryer and little product/protectant use before styling. I just texted Candice with my concerns and she prefaced by asking to see a picture of it and inferred that I would not have gotten heat damage from her styling because she didn't use a hot comb on my hair. She even said that her flat ironing couldn't have done it, that hot comb damage only comes with daily use (to suggest that I had created the heat damage myself--for the record, I don't use heat tools at home.) This is both inaccurate and preposterous and any good stylist should know that heat damage can happen whenever any heat tool is too hot. I said as much, so retorted to say that what I think is heat damage may not be heat damage at all, but she can't know until she sees it (I didn't send her a picture because my hair is freshly twisted). At this point, I'm angrier at her responses than I am at the damage to my hair. For a stylist to suggest that a paying client needs to provide photographic proof of an issue they voluntarily reported, shift blame, not take any accountability, or even offer an "I'm sorry," as a matter of customer service is unacceptable. Will not be returning and plan to speak with the owner to be refunded. read more

I went here for a massage with a groupon. In the intake form they say they have cameras, which you see on the floor of the salon where everyone gets their haircut but THEY HAVE CAMERAS IN THE MASSAGE ROOM. I'm not sure how that is legal but this certainly is a violation of privacy to video clients as they get undressed to get their massage. I won't be going back. The masseuse did a good job but I can find salons that aren't creepy in DC. Definitely not a relaxing experience when you have to wrap yourself in the blanket from the table to get changed. read more

I rarely write reviews but this was just wrong. I scheduled an appointment early in the week through the studio's website for hair extension services. I also was texting back and forth with a rep through IG to purchase hair directly from them. I explained it was my first time getting this particular hair service and first time client. I was excited to try it out and why not for a birthday gift to myself. After texting with the rep, I was set to purchase the hair from them too instead of buying it elsewhere. The rep never said anything about bringing hair in for customizing prior to appointment policies. Well, I received a cancellation email 3 days before my appointment. I called to inquire about the cancellation because I didn't do it. The receptionist told me she did not know why it was cancelled and I could not reinstate my appointment because others had booked already. At this point, i was placed on hold to see what they could do. she found an appointment time on the same day as before, however; I would not be able to have my extensions customized because as she said " the specialist wouldn't have time as it's their busiest day" and "assistants don't color" also "I needed to bring hair in earlier to be colored/customized ". I had told her that I spoke with the rep through IG to purchase hair directly from them so I didn't need to bring hair. Nobody said anything about this. The receptionist didn't care and just restated they couldn't customize it. I was shocked speechless! It was just like take what we giving or or leave it with no accommodations, suggestions or even apologies for their mistake. I booked this appointment a week in advance. Enough time to get every thing needed to make this service amazing. This is a full frontal service. Sewing it in "as is" is not what you want to hear. Definitely not the service expected from a luxury hair studio. initially i just kept the appointment but after thinking about it more, I called back within the hr to cancel. I was expecting an upscale experience and I walked away with a "squeezed in" "we don't have time" type of interaction. Don't spend your money here. Go somewhere else where they have time to give you the consistent luxury experience you're paying for and the customer service that reflects you're a valued client (new or old). read more

I was referred to Studio Chique by one of my natural girlfriends. I've been transitioning for about 6 months, and decided I was ready (as ready as I'll ever be) for my big chop. I booked an appointment with Candice via the salon's website, which I like. I'm OK with salons that don't operate on walk-ins. I rather not deal with unpredictable traffic. The day of my appointment came, and I was a mental and emotional wreck at the thought of cutting off all of my hair. But Candice and the team at Studio Chique eased my anxiety and let me know that I have nothing to worry about since: 1) hair grows back, and 2) I have a decent curl patter. Between cutting off the relaxed hair, washing and deep conditioning, and styling...I was in and out in less than 75 minutes. No complaints about the service and atmosphere. I will be back. read more

Worst customer service and salon administration. I made an appointment for a 6pm massage, showed up at 6pm and was informed that the time slot was double booked. Since the other client scheduled for the 6pm appointment arrived first, she got the 6pm massage. The woman at the front desk informed me that they'd been having issues with the scheduling system for a while and that I could wait for an hour for the 7pm appointment. No apologies for the error, no phone call for a heads up once the first client arrived and they realized the mistake so I didn't have to waste my time. Ok so this review is ages overdue. I went to this salon in November 2016 after growing my natural 4C hair over four years. In these four years I hadn't used any heat on my hair and had been taking care of my hair on my own. This trip was primarily for a length check(with a Silkening Press) and professional trim. My stylist was Candice and I had a great experience. I got there 15 minutes early for my appointment and was seen right away. After my appointment, my hair shocked even me(in the best way possible). It was thick, shiny and just moving with the wind. My silk press lasted me 3 weeks and I could have easily pushed it to 4(with the necessary moisture prevention measures mind you). With all of this, however, I did have some concerns about heat damage on wash day. When that day came I can say 99.5% of my hair was heat damage free with the exception of like 5 strands at the very back of my head that had a looser curl pattern.
