Black salons--especially for natural hair--are a gift when you find the right one. Unfortunately, after three unsatisfactory experiences here over three years, this is my third strike. Most recently, I scheduled a 9:00 am appointment earlier in the week. At 6:00 am the day of, I received a text that the stylist was out sick and was asked about alternative timing. Given my schedule, I offered 9:00 or 9:30, and also said I could just cancel and do my own hair. Shortly after, Adjuana called and was very committed to making it work, so I agreed. We landed on a plan where I would wash and condition my own hair at home (a service included in what I booked), come in at 10:00 am for twists, and be done by my hard stop of 11:30. To her credit, she was kind and apologetic, kept an eye on my new stylist who was making some errors, and I was out only about 6 minutes late. However, the final result didn't meet expectations. There was far too much product in my hair; I had to ask the stylist to address visible gel residue and fix some ends. My styled hair stained my silk scarf and felt sticky to touch nearly one week later. And as someone who cares about hair care, not just looks, I'm concerned about how my hair and scalp will fair longer term. What was most frustrating: I was charged $130 for what was effectively a partial service, after being asked to do the wash portion myself. When I asked about the pricing, I was told she gave me a $10 discount. Overall, the experience felt stressful, expensive for what I received, and I didn't love the outcome. I did make clear to Adjuana that the cost to wash my own hair and not be happy with the outcome was too high. She said that for whatever it's worth, she liked the style and told me a different stylist to book with if I decide to come back. I still gave a small tip because my dissatisfaction was not entirely the stylist's fault, but I'm still in disbelief about how this whole situation was handled. As a fellow small business owner -- I won't be returning. On the positive: the space is comfortable, and if you have a stylist you trust and flexibility with scheduling, this may work for you. I really wanted to love this salon because the ambiance is wonderful, and they make you feel so welcome when you walk in. The staff is kind and friendly, which makes it all the more disappointing to leave this review. The biggest issue is their time management. My boyfriend and I were there for 3 hours for a retwist that should have taken maybe 1 to 1.5 hours at most. To make matters worse, he sat with shampoo or conditioner in his hair for a full hour while the stylist was frequently on her phone, dragging out the process. We arrived at 2, only to be met with confusion about our appointment, which wasn't the best start. Despite their kindness in squeezing us in last minute, it didn't justify us not leaving until 6 pm for a service that was supposed to be much shorter. It felt like a huge waste of time and was unfair to us as paying clients. I truly wish this experience had matched the warm atmosphere they've created, but unfortunately, it fell far short due to these issues. read more

If walk ins are welcome you need to be professional To offer a more organic and luxury experience , this is not it . You should be greeted and offered water , tea or coffee. Pricing is a huge issue with our salons ! Be consistent and transparent about pricing and payment before you start service ! Have descriptions ! A website ! A detailed menu ! Why does half the salon and multiple employees have to speak in another language to discuss pricing . Unprofessional. If you are going to charge more than increase your standard and actually use the organic products on your "clients" hair that you're advertising ! Why are the braiders talking on the phone in your ear the entire time Asking you personal questions There's an issue within our culture about judging people if they wear their hair natural or not . Weave/extensions or not . Relaxer or not . This has nothing to do with my service . After having been a loyal customer for more than a decade, it is with deep regret that I feel compelled to "air dirty laundry" and post the fact that my loyal patronage ended as a result of the owner ( my stylist) lack of regard for my scheduling needs, despite the fact that thru the years there were more than a few ocassions when I had accomodated her scheduling needs by coming in at times other than my scheduled appointment time to meet her needs. Even sitting in the chair of one of her employed stylists for 3 HOURS WHILE THE STYLIST RUSH HOME TO ADDRESS A POLICE EMERGENCY AT HER HOME. The straw that bent the camel's back was when the owner trimmed my hair when it was wet, for the first time in over a decade .This led to the most uneven and unappealing appearance; but since I did not speak up ( trusting she knew what she was doing only to end up with appalking results because of her need to save time) I put the blame on myself. The straw that broke the camel's back was scheduling me for an appointment that I know she did not confirm with me because it was for the week AFTER MY BIRTHDAY, NOT BEFORE. While I am officially a senior citizen now and prone to forgetfulness, I do still remember my birthday. I informed the owner that, while I appreciated the services she provided thru the years, it was apparent to me that my business had become less of a priority. To end the business relation amicably, I requested information on a product she has used on my hair over the last 4 years. It's now been more than a week, and she has not provided the information. I have secured the info elsewhere; however, the fact that she chose not to accomodate a customer that has spent THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS throughout the years at her business; stayed a customer as she changed business locations 3 TIMES during my patronage and expressed in no uncertain terms a desire to end the business relationship amicably, warranted this review. I certainly do not attribute my patronage alone as the factor of her success. But I've lost respect and trust for a business owner who lacks respect and appreciation for a loyal and thru the years, very accomodating customer. She needs to invest in hiring the caliber of personnel that provides her business with the time and personnel management skills, she is desperately in need of. And she needs to " axx somebody" about taking an " old girl's" kindness for weakness. The staff here has always been very helpful, educating, and polite towards me and anybody that walks through the door while im around. I was recommended this studio by a coworker and im glad I found it! Whatever hairstyle you want, they can do it for you. If it's not on their list when booking online, you can simply explain what you want when you arrive and they have no problem doing it for you! By far my favorite hair studio I've ever been to! I've been coming here since late last year. I am always greeted warmly and professionally. Sometimes there is conversation, sometimes not, but neither silence nor speech is forced. It's very genuine, my hair smells great but not perfumed, my locs are neat and growing well. They gave me condolences when my mother died and it didn't feel perfunctory. I went to Twist It Sista for mid back, medium sized braids. I was done in about 4 hours and the braids looked immaculate. The parts were straight and the braids were even and tidy. I got a ton of compliments from friends and coworkers. The salon also advised me on the best braids for my hair texture (knotless vs box). The salon was clean and the service was friendly and responsive. I would highly recommend. read more

I was indecisive and unsure, and these ladies made an executive decision and hooked me up. I got an up do corn row style by sarah and it was great. I looked good and felt good. THANK YOU, Twist It Sista (and Coco)!! I got a cut and two strand twist (with some flat twists in the front) with Coco and I could not love my hair anymore. She was fast (like crazy fast), but detail-oriented, checked in with me often to see how I was liking it, and pulled through with exactly what I wanted in preparation for my wedding out of town. Adjuana, the owner, answered my call late on a weeknight to book my appointment when another salon bailed on me last minute, got my appointment all set and even called to confirm it the day before. When I got there Coco was ready to go -- I didn't wait for a single second (on a Saturday, which I know ya'll know is unheard of), and the vibe in the shop is low-key but you can tell all the stylists take their work seriously. On top of it all, I found the price to be totally reasonable for my length of hair and what I got done. Its hard to find shop you love, and I'm so glad I found Twist It Sista. This review is for Yaella; she's been doing my hair for more than 6 years. She is the BEST natural stylist ever. She is punctual! She moves with the speed of lightening! She's extremely CREATIVE. I can't recall more than 1 time that she's started my hair more than 5 minutes after my appointment time - Yaella does NOT play with her time and the time of her clients. She's extremely caring, giving and she's REAL. She can do ANY style that I want. She NEVER lets me down. I go and see her every 3 - 4 weeks and I never miss an appointment unless I am getting my hair braided, with added hair. I came here to get Senegalese twists. My appointment was on Sunday. I arrived at 8:40. NOBODY WAS THERE. At around 8:55, I thought maybe there was another entrance on the Rhode Island side, so I walked around there to see if I was waiting in the wrong spot. I was gone for no more than a minute and a half, if that long. In that time, the owner showed up. She lied and said "I've been here for 5 minutes." Um, you were not, but OK! She's nice enough. As others have said, the salon is really cute. The bathroom is tiny, just FYI. The day before my appointment, Adjuana (owner), calls me confused, "Did we confirm your appointment?" Yes, it's tomorrow. "Did I give you the name of your stylist?" Yes! "I'm so sorry. I've just been so busy and working with so many ppl." I understand, we all get busy, but it was a bit unprofessional. On to my stylist/styling. Vencia arrives at 9:00 (and strolls in w/o a care in the world) so I had to wait for her to get situated. To be on time is to be late. As a PAYING CUSTOMER, I legit expect you to be locked, loaded and ready to go at my appt. time. If your first client is at 9, you don't show up at 9:00. She started my hair at 9:25! BUT THEN I had to help her try to troubleshoot the TV. The owner left and the only thing on was the radio, but she didn't want to listen to music so she tried to turn on the TV. Instead of calling the owner (who left the shop by this time) she had me trying to figure out the television. We waste about 5 minutes doing that. Then, she had the nerve to ask me "Do you have Netflix on your phone? WTF! No, DO YOU? I'm not about to burn my battery down cause you want to be entertained. Here's the thing, I knew I was going to be there 4-5 hours, so I brought my iPad, but after she asked me that I never pulled it out. I'm not about to entertain you. My iPad was for me. We ended up sitting in COMPLETE SILENCE for pretty much the entire time. After the first FOUR HOURS she did cut the stereo on, but then it cut off after 30 minutes, so we were back to sitting in silence. It was so AWKWARD. When we started, I ask her how long it would take. Africans do my head in 4 hours, so when she told me 6-7 hours I almost passed out. And sure enough, she took 7 hours. SHE'S SLOW! Very slow. And if my hair was BOMB I wouldn't complain so much, but these twists are a mess. My hair is shedding all over the place. And even worse? There are hairs sticking out along the twist shaft. I usually like to wear my hair twisted for a month--if I make it two weeks that will be good. From a distance my hair does look nice, but when you look at individuals up close you see where she didn't do a good job. I do appreciate that she wasn't as rough on my head as the Africans. My scalp isn't anywhere near as sore, but ... I'm going to stick to my African braiders. I give Twist It two stars because the salon is cute, and both the owner and Vencia were nice. I won't be back, at least not for any type of extension braiding service. read more

Today was the very first appointment and I had a wonderful experience! Im thinking I may have found my new salon home. Today I got box braids, add a wash and blow dry.... literally in there for 4 hours, which in my experience has been unheard of. My braider was Jasmine she was attentive, she made the braids light (which many braiders have a very hard time understanding), and she completely understood that I like having edges. I Love my braids! Also the salon itself has exposed brick, love the vibe, its quaint, clean, the artwork is beautiful, its on a side street so parking is plentiful, the music is excellent too (very chill vibe). I also met the owner she made the effort to say hello and introduce herself, so nice! They service all kind of customers which is cool. This is spot is going to continue to do very well, Im definitely coming back. read more

I had a nice experience Monica was my stylist and she walked me through the various styles for locs. I was very pleased with the outcome of my hair. The salon environment is very relaxing and calm. I went to Twist It Sista for the first time yesterday. And I would return. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. I was comfortable sitting for a few hours. The ladies who worked there were professional. I got long thick box braids (kind of like poetic justice braids). They weren't over priced. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of 5 is because I am extremely particular about my braids and I can see some imperfections in the top ones. read more

I wish I could review the stylists in this shop separate from the owner. I love my stylist. She has been doing my hair for years. The other stylists are friendly and polite as well. Unfortunately for them, they work in Twist It Sista. The owner is rude and unprofessional. On my last visit there she publicly reprimanded a stylist over something that is her responsibility as the owner of the business. We all sat there looking and feeling ill at ease and she didn't seem to care. She kept right on reprimanding the stylist as if there wasn't an audience. The issue was a broken stylist chair. The stylists have to borrow the chair of whichever stylist is absent because the owner hasn't replaced the broken chair. On the morning of my visit a stylist borrowed the owner's chair as she wasn't there. The owner showed up towards the end of my time there and proceeded to make a scene in front of everyone. It was horrible. She took her chair from the stylist, gave her another chair and stated that the broken chair wasn't broken. We could all see that broken. It was clearly tilting to one side. Does she expect paying customers to sit in that broken chair for hours while getting service? Another issue is the electrical problems. On several of my visits I've observed the stylists having to work around electrical problems while the owner acts completely oblivious. There are outlets that are not working so some of the stylists have to move around to blow dry their clients hair. Sometimes in the midst of blow drying a client's hair the power goes out and the stylist has to go to the breaker box to turn it back on. Isn't it the owner's responsibility to take care of these issues? She likes to tell clients that you are a client of the shop not the stylist. Well I'm not. The minute my stylist leaves I am following her to wherever she goes. read more

I found out about Twist It Sista through a Groupon discount for Odeliyah. I chose to have a wash, condition and twisted up do. She was very professional and courteous. The owner, I think her name was Edwana, not sure if she was or wasn't, but she was very nice and professional. I was greeted immediately, when I cam in the door. I was very happy with my results, I would come back again. The only negative comment that I have is for one of the stylists. I believe his name was Zaire. He was engaging in a less than favorable and unprofessional conversation that was off-putting to me especially because I was a new client. Overall I was very pleased with the services I received, I would definitely book a another appointment. Parking is a premium in that area, so there isn't a lot of street parking. read more
