I hate leaving a disappointing review but it's been 4 months and my haircut hasn't grown into itself or improved at all. I'd gotten 3-4 haircuts with Akiko before, once when she was still with Ozuki Salon in Georgetown, and 2-3 times at Kamiya-A. This was my first time going back in a few years and unfortunately my last. I'd had decent haircuts with Akiko, a little pricey, but everyone promised she was the best for Asian hair in DC (I normally go to NYC but needed to establish someone closer) so I went back. She's so sweet and her studio is clean, whimsically designed, and comfortable. But this last haircut in August was just terrible--it's VERY choppy and uneven w/ rough edges. I showed her a picture of what I wanted before we started. She looked at it for a second, said "ok!" and started washing my hair. The whole wash & cut took all of 50 mins before her next client came in. I remember feeling surprised everything was done so quickly. After she finished, I noticed the cut was choppy but I usually judge a cut after a few days. The next day, I noticed the layers framing my face were entirely uneven (pictured) and texted Akiko to plan for a time to revise it. As an one woman show, I imagine it can be hard to plan/book everyone, but our availability wasn't lining up and though she offered dates/times, she neither had the capacity to accommodate my schedule to correct this within the week nor commented or apologized about the mistake via text. After already feeling rushed at my haircut, increased service costs, scheduling inconveniences (only via phone), and what to me seems like a BAD haircut (especially for someone who is so experienced and skilled), I decided to not return to her to fix it. Not to mention, the hairdressing cape cloth she put on me throughout the cut smelled like it had been sitting unwashed in a gym bag. Maybe it was just a bad day, but it's been frustrating waiting to grow out my hair to have it re-cut correctly. And to continue to see how rough and uneven the cut is months later is disappointing for a salon that could do and probably has done better.

    Such a lovely setting!

After moving to DC from SF I had no idea where to get my hair done, but my friend recommended Akiko and every visit I've had since then has been awesome. The salon is located next to Hana market in what looks like a regular apartment entrance. Akiko is the only stylist there and her personality shines through in the design: lots of Japanese books, figurines, art, and plants. It feels like visiting a friend in their home, complete with a very sweet and well-behaved dog. Akiko is friendly, talkative, and a highly skilled stylist. She patiently listens to what I want but seems to know exactly what I really want with little pretense. If you can't reach her via phone, she's very responsive on email as well. Bonus points because there is a designated parking space in the back!

I normally don't write reviews but I had to after visiting! I was in desperate need of a hair cut because my hair was extremely dry with many split ends. I am very particular so I wanted to find an asian salon because they know asian hair and styles best. I messaged her and she was able to fit me in which I was grateful for. Though I was not used to paying so much for a hair cut ($110) as this was my first time getting my hair done in DC, I was super happy with the result and my experience. The owner was extremely nice and pleasant and her dogs were adorable. My hair now looks healthy and she was very receptive to the exact style and way I wanted my hair cut. Definitely recommend!

AKIKO IS A MAGICIAN!! That's the only thing I tell people when they compliment me on my hair (which is quite often). Akiko has been my one and only stylist since 2006 -- even when I moved away to NC for 4 years, I still made the drive up to DC to see her. When I came back to the city in 2010, it was a no-brainer decision to have her as my stylist again. WHATEVER YOUR HAIRSTYLE IS - PIXIE CUT SHORT OR LONG LOCKS - AKIKO WILL CUT, COLOR, AND STYLE YOUR HAIR IN A WAY THAT YOU'LL NEVER GO TO ANOTHER SALON AGAIN! She'll listen to what you want, look at any pictures that you bring in, and tell you the pros/cons of that hair color or style -- she's the best! I'm so happy that Akiko has her own salon now -- it's a modern yet earthy/balanced vibe. 3 blocks away from the U St metro with plenty of coffee shops and good eats nearby. Akiko is great with email communication and her sweet personality makes me smile every time I'm there! :)

Puddles and Lungo, Akiko's two chill dogs, hanging out at the salon.

I've been going to Akiko to have my hair cut for over 6 years now. I'm so glad she finally opened up her own salon! She is just fabulous. I have fine hair and she cuts it perfectly so that it has a bit of natural curl. Akiko uses all Japanese products which are great for fine or thick hair, but you of course never feel any pressure to make extra purchases. The space is funky and modern with lots of decor from her native Japan. One of the best perks of her salon is that her adorable, chill dogs are often there hanging out. (Note: if you are afraid, no worries, she will keep them in the back). Highly recommend Akiko!

Before a blonde and after a Redhead! Spicy!! Love Akiko

Has anyone booked a haircut appointment lately as a new customer? I've tried reaching out multiple times by email (since no VM) for ten months to no avail. :(

She takes appointment by phone number! Just message the number listed.

I don't see any reviews about her bleaching skills - any blondes that go to her that can recommend her for blondes?

She's must better at cutting hair than dyeing hair.

How much does Akiko charge for just a haircut (no color, etc.)?

For cut, plus wash and blow-dry: $85, not including tip

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.

I called to see if I could do a same day appointment and they were so flexible! I was able to schedule one two hours out from when I called. I did arrive early as I did not want to take the metro and instead drove. You have to keep an eye out for parking. Just keep your travel time in consideration when visiting the area. The salon is on the second floor and is quite easy to find. I had Yvonne give me a haircut and she was so quick with the process. My cut was pretty simple and I just wanted several inches shorter with long curtain bangs. I had it styled at the end too! Not to mention, I was given a deep conditioning treatment. I'm not sure how much that costs but for all the services I received it came out to a decent price ($125). PS there's a store mascot here (some doggos) so just keep that into consideration if you have allergies. I'm sure if you have your dog with you this business is pet friendly.
