I hate leaving a disappointing review but it's been 4 months and my haircut hasn't grown into itself or improved at all. I'd gotten 3-4 haircuts with Akiko before, once when she was still with Ozuki Salon in Georgetown, and 2-3 times at Kamiya-A. This was my first time going back in a few years and unfortunately my last. I'd had decent haircuts with Akiko, a little pricey, but everyone promised she was the best for Asian hair in DC (I normally go to NYC but needed to establish someone closer) so I went back. She's so sweet and her studio is clean, whimsically designed, and comfortable. But this last haircut in August was just terrible--it's VERY choppy and uneven w/ rough edges. I showed her a picture of what I wanted before we started. She looked at it for a second, said "ok!" and started washing my hair. The whole wash & cut took all of 50 mins before her next client came in. I remember feeling surprised everything was done so quickly. After she finished, I noticed the cut was choppy but I usually judge a cut after a few days. The next day, I noticed the layers framing my face were entirely uneven (pictured) and texted Akiko to plan for a time to revise it. As an one woman show, I imagine it can be hard to plan/book everyone, but our availability wasn't lining up and though she offered dates/times, she neither had the capacity to accommodate my schedule to correct this within the week nor commented or apologized about the mistake via text. After already feeling rushed at my haircut, increased service costs, scheduling inconveniences (only via phone), and what to me seems like a BAD haircut (especially for someone who is so experienced and skilled), I decided to not return to her to fix it. Not to mention, the hairdressing cape cloth she put on me throughout the cut smelled like it had been sitting unwashed in a gym bag. Maybe it was just a bad day, but it's been frustrating waiting to grow out my hair to have it re-cut correctly. And to continue to see how rough and uneven the cut is months later is disappointing for a salon that could do and probably has done better. read more

The salon is located next to Hana market in what looks like a regular apartment entrance. I normally don't write reviews but I had to after visiting! I was in desperate need of a hair cut because my hair was extremely dry with many split ends. I am very particular so I wanted to find an asian salon because they know asian hair and styles best. I messaged her and she was able to fit me in which I was grateful for. Though I was not used to paying so much for a hair cut ($110) as this was my first time getting my hair done in DC, I was super happy with the result and my experience. The owner was extremely nice and pleasant and her dogs were adorable. My hair now looks healthy and she was very receptive to the exact style and way I wanted my hair cut. Terrible new customer experiences. When you ask for availability by text (as is requested), you get "Not available." Two words. You ask again what the availability then looks like (hello?). Akiko is the best! As a caveat I'm naturally bald but wear a large variety of wigs ranging from fun $45 ones to ones that would be considered prosthetics (human hair vacuum wigs that run into thousands). I recently lost my favorite hairstylist when they moved to better opportunities but I'm really happy to have been referred to Akiko. She is the only hair stylist so far which I trust with my more expensive pieces where I really can't afford any mistakes. Additionally this review is only for styling and cuts. -Facilities: based at the bottom floor of a bunch of row homes and next to the japanese market. The space is well lit with high ceiling and designed is that soft quirky chic that is her signature style. For those who care, I've had friends consistently refer to it as "insta perfect" hahah. She has a lovely pup who's usually sleeping when I go. -Communication/Booking: As some other reviewers have said, she's a one woman show. I've never had and issue booking for modifying an appointment and she always been responsive to emails within a few hours. She's straight and to the point in emails which I appreciate though in person she's thoughtful and I found her great in regards to talking about what I'm interested in. -Cut/Styling: I love my pieces after they've been styled! Regardless of whether you get expensive or frugal pieces, all wigs to an extent need to be tailored. She did a great job on a black bob that she transformed from "cute" to "cutting" with a sharp tapering slant from back to front. For my expensive piece she brought out delicate wispy layering that she suggested would frame my face best. I love both. -Overall: I highly recommend her for cutting/styling! Though I suggest seeing her during less popular hours, I usually went during a weekday when she's more readily available considering how busy she gets. read more

Akiko has been my one and only stylist since 2006 -- even when I moved away to NC for 4 years, I still made the drive up to DC to see her. When I came back to the city in 2010, it was a no-brainer decision to have her as my stylist again. I was an avid fan of Akiko for almost 3 years since she was working at Ozuki salon. I did highlighting and haircut every time I saw her so a session would cost me like $400-$500. regardless of the hefty price tag, I kept visiting her but decided this is it when I went to kamiya-a two years ago. She still charges same/even more than when she was in Ozuki salon but she was cutting corners by using cheap hair products. Starting from bleaching solution to hair color, everything reeked of ammonia. The stylist I'm seeing now charges same as her but uses better quality products with no ammonia. Also the shampoo she uses is cheap and I don't feel relaxed at the shampoo station since there's no person just for shampooing. Two stars were deducted for using cheap products but she is good at hair cuts (long hair). When I decided to go short, I realized she didn't meet my expectations. When I requested the straight bangs (for more than 3 times), it would always be slanted and went longer towards my left eye. I had to adjust it at home by myself all the time. And the funny thing was she charges an additional $20 for bangs. I would say she's overhyped. From reading the other reviews, I realized most people who like her haircut are just trimming their long hair and I'm not surprised. Two more stars were deducted for being unprofessional in replying to email requests. She's taking on so many roles at the salon starting from making appointments to shampoo, haircut and cleaning all by herself. And when I requested the appointment via email, I found her very unfriendly and short to the point. I understand she's busy but she still needs to talk in respective tone to the clients. I've been going to Akiko to have my hair cut for over 6 years now. I'm so glad she finally opened up her own salon! She is just fabulous. I have fine hair and she cuts it perfectly so that it has a bit of natural curl. Akiko uses all Japanese products which are great for fine or thick hair, but you of course never feel any pressure to make extra purchases. The space is funky and modern with lots of decor from her native Japan. One of the best perks of her salon is that her adorable, chill dogs are often there hanging out. I have been going to Akiko for 7 almost 8 years at this point and prior to her I had been been with my salon on the west coast for a decade. I tried two other places in dc after moving before finding Akiko and it wasn't great. Hands down the only lady I trust with my hair. She will make you feel comfortable, ask what you want, and makes it happen. For myself shes done cut, color (brunette to blonde, highlights lowlights baylage and baby lights) and every time it looks absolutely stunning. Unprofessional. I wanted to do a perm at this place. Wrote email to ask general questions about styling, pricing, parking, appointment, etc., received two extremely curt replies (on the verge of being rude), and then just stopped replying altogether. Akiko does not seem to be attentive or even willing to take new customers. If this is the case, you could have told me upfront, saving me the trouble of writing the second and third emails. Just moved from Chicago and stumbled upon Akiko on yelp. I went from long and thin hair with blonde balyage to a long, angled, brown bob with caramel highlights. It really lifted my hair and looks much fuller and healthier. I love it! Good communication via email, she squeezed me in right before thanksgiving. I arrived to another guest in the salon. She worked on both of us for a bit and then just me. Great conversation the whole time. OMG. I am OBSESSED with this Japanese-style salon! I got my hair cut there about three days ago. This unmarked, "secret" salon is absolutely gorgeous and is run by the very talented Akiko. I asked for a shoulder length long bob and while it was a LOT of hair to cut off (I had long hair before she cut it), Akiko did a great job going off the pictures I showed her. Her engaging personality made it a fun haircut. It was on the expensive side (came out to $100+ including tip) but you are paying for quality. I love all of the cute details in her salon. The bathroom has these cool black tiles, and some of her walls are covered in chalkboard paint. She has all these Japanese anime knick-knacks that are fun to look at. Akiko is magic. Truly. I have been going to Akiko for my haircuts for 10 years now and have never been disappointed. She always seems to know what fits my face and hair texture. It's reached the point where I trust Akiko with her judgement on my hair for more than I trust my own. Any style I have is solely due to her lovely talents. At this point, the majority of my family has gotten hair cuts from her and more than half a dozen of my friends and acquaintances. Being that it is busy season at work right before I was going on vacation this Saturday, it totally slipped my mind that I was leaving in DAYS and still needed to visit Akiko. I emailed her this past weekend asking when she can take me asap. First she said she can take me on Saturday, but I couldn't come in since I was leaving town that day. She quickly replied via e-mail and I was able to come in Wednesday night after work. MUCH APPRECIATED! My sister and I came in Wednesday and was welcomed by her sweet dog. Her new place is very nice and inviting. I love the décor, I think it represents her very well. I was immediately seated and I showed Akiko exactly what I wanted which was to color the base, then add highlights and a trim. I am so happy with my lighter colored hair. I have received many compliments right away. I must say, Akiko's reallllllllllly awesome at cutting hair. I just wanted a trin, to add more body and layers to my hair since I felt like it grew out. I received exactly what I wanted. My hair is still long, it is bouncy and has more volume from the layers. I'm writing this review a three months after my cut, and I'm still in love with the way Akiko cut and styled my hair. I've always had long hair, and wanted to try out a bob haircut, but never felt comfortable enough with the stylist to trust them to take the leap of faith. As soon as Akiko touched my hair, she knew exactly how to style it to make sure it wouldn't be overly "poofy," My hair is quite course and frizzy, but Akiko assured me that I could still go short (and actually encouraged me to go shorter than I had originally planned). Akiko was clearly very skilled, and cut my hair in a fraction of the time it takes most hairstylists to do so (I have VERY thick hair). She really knew what she was doing and had dealt with my hair texture before. By the end, I had a stylish, modern cut that I absolutely loved. I have to stress that this never happens to me after a cut. I usually go through a series of mini panic attacks until my hair grows out past the "awkward stage" and becomes more manageable. The next day at work, I received countless compliments on my new haircut and had a new sense of confidence. I usually have to straighten my hair or apply tons of product in order to wear it down, but I have never had to even style my hair and still receive compliments! I was so happy with my cut that day, and still am three months later! I'm completely sold on Akiko and hope that I never have to go to another stylist again. I love this lady. This is my second cut with her and she's worth every red cent I save up to see her. I have classic thick-ass asian hair. It's pin straight and it's hard to even make it that nice blow dry poof with a shit ton of product. Akiko is able to work it to make it look polished even when I'm running out the door with my hair wet (when it eventually dries). Which leads to the other reason why I love Akiko - she listens to you and doesn't try to tame your hair. She works within your lifestyle. I am not very good at styling my hair in the mornings, as I value sleep over beauty. If it was for the metro ride to work, I wouldn't have make up on my face before getting into work (yes I'm that girl on the metro), Also her hair cuts lasts - which is a mark of an excellent hair cut. I can go up to 9 months before needing another cut, and it's because the split ends drive me nuts not because the cut doesn't last. Akiko is very, very precise, spending quality time cutting and re-cutting, to make sure your look is nothing short of perfection. I used to believe in $5 haircuts to save money. Never have I ever considered paying $80 for a haircut before. But I would pay a lot more for Akiko. She is amazing! I was referred from a friend who is a regular there. I was only back in DC for a week and so I emailed her 2 weeks before. She said she didn't have availability so I replied asking to let me know if anything opens up. She emailed me back the next day saying that a spot had opened up - so yay! The place is super clean and cute with all these unique decorations. I really love the Star Wars figurines she had. So I've had long hair for a majority of my life and this was a drastic change to short hair. I showed her pictures of what I had in mind. I also asked her about her opinion to make sure it would turn out okay. Unlike those with straight fine Asian hair, I have wavy, thick, coarse hair. I told her my worries about my head looking too big or my hair being too frizzy, but she was able to quell those fears by explaining what she would do to overcome what I didn't want (the massive triangular poof that comes with short hair). While she was washing/cutting my hair, she was giving me advice as to how to take care of it more and what I should do to get the look that I wanted. She dried my hair and then went on to do more detail when my hair was fully dried. It came out looking so good! My hair feels a lot lighter and much bolder. None of my fears came to fruition and so I was really happy with the end result. I cannot wait to come back! My sister also came here for Balayage and that turned out amazing as well. I'm so glad that I checked Yelp before I called Ozuki salon to make an appointment with Akiko. I'm also very happy that she now has her own salon. It is very cute, cozy and playful. I just loved her dog, too. If you are looking for a salon that gives total attention to you and your hair, Kamiya-A is it. Akiko was more attentive and gave me a feeling of getting VIP treatment. This is not to say she wasn't attentive at Ozuki Salon, but she was often booked back to back. So there were times when I knew she had to rush my haircut. (but still came out great! that's why I kept going back to her) My haircut was long overdue. My hair showed roots and extensive damage. I only had very vague idea about how I wanted my hair to look like. I just knew that Akiko would make me look nicer. She was patient with indecisive me and helped me pick what I want to do. So I had a haircut and color, instead of haircut and perm. It took about 90 minutes for cut and color, and result came out great. It's been a week+ since Akiko did her magic on my hair, and I still get compliments. By the way, for those Asian ladies who were told that perm is not suitable for Asian hair, that statement is a BS. They just don't have the right chemical or right techniques. We just need to find the right salon. Akiko has permed my straight Asian hair and done a fantastic job. After seeing so many positive reviews and recommendation from people, I finally booked a haircut appointment with Akiko. It was a very fast 15-min haircut service with hair rinse. I would say her service is average standard in this area and I am not impressed with her hair cutting skill. I had a short bob hairstyle on my typical Asian straighten hair and it's not as easy as she said that it should be easy to taken care of, instead, my haircut didn't follow hair flow and I can easily see hair stick out to wierd direction. This service is $85 and she asks for tip! I will not come back and won't recommend for people who is looking for a Japanese high standard haircut! Akiko is a genius and has a great eye for styling and coloring! I've trusted only her with my hair for years now and am so thrilled to see her in her own place. So I have been hearing rave reviews about Akiko for the past several years from friends but I have hesitated because coming from California- I never paid more than $40 for a very good haircut. Finally, this past weekend- tired of my unruly mane- I went to Kamiya-A salon and had the best haircut since moving to Washington. Akiko was running late but thankfully, there are plenty of shopping in the area to keep you occupied and Starbucks is just down the street. Akiko gave me the best shampoo and cut without any tugging or pulling. I asked for a medium length bob and got exactly what I wanted. My new haircut is so light and airy that it has actually made me a happier person. She is also very sweet and personable. The studio is simple and efficient. I felt like I was hanging out with an old friend. My only regret is not going to her sooner- I could have save myself a lot of agony, bowl haircuts (I am looking at you Bang Salon across the street), and countless bad hair days.
