Overpriced for what I received. Needed to have it repaired and was told by Ashley that the error was basically in my head, yet everyone that saw it noted the issue- color error. It's clear this is gold (meant ti be closer to my own grey- a pretty silver/grey hue) but she refused to admit that she fell well short of that. After a long discussion on options, refunded me a sliver, so instead of 600, I paid 300 for a trim, color error, and blowout. That's extremely expensive for that style. Then had to pay another 3 to have someone more skilled fix it. Showed her the repair, so she understood what I'd been looking for, and she was rude and condescending about it. Just sharing my experience to save someone else the embarrassment and stress I experienced. I had gone to Parlour back in December 2023 and left feeling so upset and distraught about my cut and color. It was not anywhere close to what I had wanted and I left with my hair just past my shoulders when I had asked for a simple trim and rounding out of my ends (my hair before was below my bra strap). Although their customer service was great, I spent the past 8 months absolutely hating my hair which was a significant hit to my overall self-confidence. I decided to give parlour another shot but with a different stylist since not everyone is the same. I booked with Ashley T and wasn't quite sure what exactly I wanted. Ashley T called me the day before my appointment and chatted with me about what I had envisioned for my hair. Day of the appointment I had a very detailed and compassionate consult and she really took the time to listen and understand my hair trauma and get to the root of what I really wanted for my hair, not just what I thought I wanted. She was warm, compassionate, and most of all impeccably detailed in her work -- especially considering I had mistakenly booked a service that was shorter than the one I received. Ashley T still took the time out of her busy schedule (which I undoubtedly made busier) to complete the service. I left this appointment with the biggest smile on my face and the self confidence that I had before that December appointment. I HIGHLY recommend Ashley T if you, like me, have had a bad experience in the past or are not sure exactly how to get to what you have envisioned in your head. SHE WILL GET YOU THERE! *update--Ginger is now at Bristle Hairdressing in Adams Morgan. I'm very happy with the highlights and haircut I got at Parlour. Ginger did a great job! She listened and took the time to do a proper consult before doing any mixing or cutting. I got very natural looking golden highlights on my dirty blond hair, which is wonderful because sometimes stylists just do lighter bleach-y highlights that don't look good with my coloring. She also did a great job extending my bangs by pulling in more hair to make them thicker. I hate my forehead and loved what she did. She referred to bangs as "cheap Botox", and I totally agree and have since adopted that phrase. A few things are not so customer friendly. There's an additional fee if you pay by credit card, which is tacky when you're paying a few hundred dollars for a cut and highlights. They should assume their merchant credit card processing fees are a cost of doing business, and factor that into pricing. Offer a cash discount, but don't gauge your customers by charging an extra fee. Then there's their pricing for bang trims at $25. Many salons I've gone to in the past provide this as a free courtesy for their clients. There are several salons on the same block as Parlour. Of the two I checked, one charges $6 for a bang trim, and the other charges $10. So I went elsewhere for my bang trim in between haircuts. Understood that a stylist's time is money, but I didn't get to charge Parlour for the extra 15-20 minutes I spent waiting for my haircut after my highlights because they were overbooked. When you spend $300+ a visit on services, you don't want to feel nickel and dimed by paying $25 when getting a quick bang trim in between visits. Parlour is also risking its clients going to those other salons when you develop good rapport with another stylist who does a good job for less than half the cost of a Parlour bang trim. read more

Cutting curly hair is scary, but I felt 100% safe and excited to let Rebecca take care of me. This big of a change is either done right or wrong, and let me tell you, she got it RIGHT. Highly highly recommend seeing her if you need to update your look. Salon itself is adorable and nicely decorated. All of the staff was warm and welcoming and it just felt like a fun place to hang out with the girls (oh and Julius, the most adorable frenchie you will ever meet.) I noticed a lot of the reviews talk about price and while I will agree you have to be prepared to drop some money, really think about what you're spending that money on. Your hair! It's literally. I'm only leaving one star because it is necessary to leave an actual review. A little over 2 months ago I came this salon for an appointment with Ashley J. I'm essentially natural(transitioning) and wanted a curly style. She encouraged me to get a cut as well but I was initially uncomfortable with the idea. I was worried that if I straightened my hair it wouldn't look right after getting it cut curly. She insisted it would be ok and would just "be in layers" I still was worried so she said she would just "trim" or "dust" the ends. So begrudgingly I let her do a "trim" (or so I thought) and the result was ok. I kept it curly for the next few months (a little over 2) until today. I straightened it and I am beyond upset with how terrible my hair looks. And this is AFTER it has grown since the last time Ashley cut it. I am literally traumatized and don't even know if I will ever let anyone cut my hair again professionally. I am So disappointed with how my hair looks. After almost 3 years of minimal heat and regular trims it's shorter then it was when I started this journey. I'm posting photos of what my hair looked like before today and pics from today after straightening it. It's pretty obvious which is which. I went back to Parlour recently, and should have been back a long time ago. My curls desperately needed a curly cut. My cut was with Marian and she is fantastic. We did a consult a few weeks earlier, though I'm not really sure why, because we had the same discussion the day of my cut, so it was a waste of time. But I did get a quote then, so that was good--you have to do that to get one. Marian is really sweet and funny and I love my cut. And she gave great product recommendations. My curls are bouncy and have way more shape these days. The rest of the staff is super nice too, including the receptionist, who is really friendly and helpful. I had my very thick, wavy/curly hair cut by Rebecca several times when I lived in the area, and she taught me so much about how to care for my hair, how to style it, and what products to use. My hair had never been healthier or looked better. Stylish, healthy, and easy to care for? I'm all about it. I was recommended this salon by a co worker and I started doing my research. The salon has an active IG account where you can look more into the hair stylists. I made an appointment a month ahead of time and the receptionist was very patient with giving me different dates and times that worked with my schedule. She let me know of the costs and their cancellation policy. I arrived at the salon right on time and maybe sat for five minutes before meeting the wonderful Rebecca. She is a curl specialist and was ready to help improve my look. We spoke about my hair journey and what I wanted and what she could give me. She was very thorough throughout the whole experience, explaining everything to me. She cut my hair dry - explaining she wanted to see the curl pattern as it is as opposed to wet. I was in the salon for two hours and never felt like I waited long for the next step. I loved Rebecca, she made me feel great about my hair and very welcomed! She did a nice layer curly cut on me and explained all the techniques/ products she used. My hair has never looked better ! I totally recommend her! The salon is very clean and quaint. They sell some the products they use such as ouidad. You might see Rebecca's dog roaming around just enjoying everyone's company. They take both cash and card but you can leave a tip on your card. I have gone to Parlour for over five years, but things have gotten so bad I have started looking for a new salon. I am not sure what is going on management-wise, but I've gone through 4 stylists in 5 years. People keep quitting. My current stylist is Chris, and my last cut with him, about a week ago, was awful. I have pretty easy hair to cut: long and mostly straight. He barely paid it any attention. He trimmed it in the back but left the front completely untrimmed and did not reinforce any of the layers. At the end of the cut he also said he wasn't going to bother styling it because my hair does not hold curls well?? I've never had any stylist say or do this ever. They always put in a little curl and it lasts for a few hours. He was just completely checked out. The cut is so bad that I'm currently looking for a new place to go to get it fixed. I really wish I did not have to find a new salon but this is just so bad. read more

This was the most wonderful experience with a haircut that I've ever had. Prior to coming to Parlour I had never had a curly cut (dry cut done by a trained stylist) but had heard of them and my curiosity finally took the best of me and I called Parlour. The receptionist was incredibly kind and spoke with me to figure out which stylist would be best with my hair and with what I wanted done. (She even took the time to look at my hair on Instagram to see which stylist would be best!) She decided Ginger would be the proper fit for me and we scheduled an appointment. Ginger was incredibly kind and informative before, during, and after the cut and style! I've never put product in my hair or thought too much about styling, but the suggestions she gave me for curl care were so simple yet impactful. Ginger explained everything she was doing so I could take note and answered all of my (silly and ignorant) questions about curly hair with gentleness. After the cut she gave me a curl info sheet and several samples. It was amazing to see a stylist that knew so much about curly hair! I will definitely be back in several months for another cut. I've been dreading writing this review. I've been waiting and waiting, hoping that my hair grows out and things will fix itself naturally. But of course, here's the review, so you know that isn't the case. The first time I went into Parlour was in August. I gave my stylist very vague directions, and he produced an awesome haircut. I loved it and I decided he'd be my official DC hair stylist (I'm new to this city, and finding a solid hair stylist is like unpacking that final box for me). I went back in a couple months later wanting a drastic cut. Based off his last cut, I trusted that he'd create something great. But you know how this goes. The cut wasn't what I wanted. It seems like the layers were improperly cut, resulting in weird shelves of unincorporated hair. They seem unintentionally choppy (something I specifically stated I did not want). When I pull my hair into a ponytail, you can see chunky tufts of where the hair was cut. I am embarrassed by my hair - it feels like something I'd deserve if I entrusted my friend with a pair of scissors. It doesn't at all resemble a haircut costing nearly $100 with tip. The thing is, I had no idea the haircut was this bad when I left the salon. Because he curled my hair. The curls completely masked the chunky-cut layers. When I went home and straightened my hair, I was incredibly disappointed, but my friends convinced me it was something that would grow out and the layers would blend in a week or two. They haven't. So now I'm not exactly sure what to do. Do I continue to walk around with these weird sedimentary-rock like layers? Do I cut my hair even shorter? Way shorter than I ever wanted it to be? Do I pay more to have someone fix this? I hate that the Parlour has left me asking myself these questions. read more

Things I like about this place: - Ginger does a good job on curly hair - I recommend you see if her if in need of a good cut (but see below). Things I do not like: - Price. It is expensive to get your hair cut here - I have paid as low as $130 and as high as $165. (Mind you that the price for a Deva hearcut had been $90ish until they did a renovation a year or two ago and decided to increase the price. Until recently, however, I was okay with it because I only get my hair cut 2-3 times a year and was willing to pay the high price for the quality of cuts. The last time I went, I asked to get my hair blow-dried straight but was told that that would be an additional $30, which I had not been asked to do in the past. Part of the whole experience of getting an expensive hair cut is to feel good afterwards. I came out feeling reaped off - the hairdresser spent 25 min on my hair then I went and sat under a hairdryer while she dealt with another client. I am not going back. read more

I went to Marian for touch up on my recent short cut. Before coming, I was told that she was experienced with ethnic/curly hair. she lied and was not. after paying and leaving the salon, i returned because i was so unsatisfied she redid my hair and l got the same results. She suggested that I go home do own wash and go and come back to the salon if i had more issues. below are pictures after my own wash n go revealing an uneven short cut with obvious bald spots. also attached a picture of what i wanted my hair to look like :). i communicated my issues with the salon. marian ignored her wrongdoing and the salon owner was extremely rude and made a variety of racist comment toward me & about my hair. Would rate a "0" if I could, but since I can't let me tell you why. 1.The price of the service cost me $372.60 for a deva cut and color. I called the salon ahead of time to check pricing and was told that it would start at $150 with no further clarification or need to help me understand how pricing works at the salon. 2. The pricing structure was not discussed before I sat down in the chair and not in between but as I got up to the receptionist. I even told the hairstylist that I was not willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money. Seems like a good time to discuss pricing, right? Nope, not there. 3. My service took 4 hours, while all other customers seemed to be in and out in no time. 4. Credit card fee was $13. Why am I paying a salons service/ credit card fees?! Shouldn't that be on the salon? 5. Then, the most annoying part of the whole visit was that the hairstylist let me leave WITH HAIR DYE SITTING IN MY EAR. I am on my way home at this point and I have chemicals sitting in my left ear for an hour or more. WTF! 6. After calling the salon and emailing numerous times about an issue experienced at their shop, they never once bothered to reach back out to me. I was sent to voicemail more than anything and left ignored on the email, listing out every detail of my visit (along with a picture of the dye that was left in my ear). I'm highly disappointed in the customer service of this salon and think it could have been reconciled if they had just tried reaching out to me. I went back for my cut and color and showed up a few minutes early. The wait wasn't long (about maybe 2/3 minutes, or less) and Billy came out with a smile on his face and a jubilant attitude. I was so excited, yet nervous. He brought me back and sat me down, we talked about keeping the length of my hair, but giving it shape (so it doesn't look like a triangle) and so he began. As I mentioned, this was a dry hair cut with my curls already in place, which I didn't know since it's my first time getting the Deva Cut *I called a few hours earlier to see if I could wet my hair so I didn't look like Chaka roaming the streets lol, but the receptionist told me not to*. Now it took Billy about 15 minutes to do his thing and he was done. Since my hair was all wild, I couldn't really tell if I liked it. All throughout the service, he kept me entertained and we chatted up a storm. I love that :-) He was oh so welcoming and friendly. After he finished with the cut, he went to prepare the color (single process). I mentioned that I wanted like a Red Purplish Brown, and he said "Ok, almost like a wine color" it's like he read my mind, but I made sure to let him know I didn't want it darker than my natural hair color or too light that I couldn't come to work flaunting it. lol. He came back and applied the color. Once he finished he put me under the heat, and I sat there for about 30 minutes I think. When it came time to get rinsed out, he requested that the shampoo lady use the Deva Curl No-Poo Shampoo on me. The shampoo lady was thoughtful and asked if the temp of the water was ok and I said yes. Both of them started working on de-tangling my hair with Deva Curl Heaven in Hair. Billy told me that he would leave the conditioner in instead of rinsing it out to help fight the frizz on that super humid day. Another curly hair product was used in my hair, but I didn't quite get the name. It was an Oribe, leave in product for curly hair. I dried my hair for a couple minutes under the dryer so we could see how the color came out. AND IT WAS AMAZING, although the ends of my hair were a little darker than I would have liked (due to the existing color in my hair), I think Billy did an excellent job! I will be returning for a retouch and for a trim in about 10wks- after the humidity is over and I can start wearing it straight again. :-) The only thing I was little depressed about was the price, since I had NEVER paid over $75, for a cut, color, AND BLOW DRY, but for the whole SHA-BANG I got (great customer service, actual hair services, etc), I say once in a while is ok. I got a curly cut from Ashley and I am SO happy. The first thing she had me do when I arrived was have me wash my hands, and we were both masked the whole time, so I felt safe. She recommended a bob which is a little shorter than I would typically go, but I trusted her and I'm glad I did! My hair feels so healthy and bouncy now, and I feel the bob really suits me. She definitely concentrated on every curl, and made sure throughout styling as well that everything looked right. She taught me how to style and what products I should use, which is super helpful. Reading all the prior reviews here about pricing made me nervous, but I had hands down the best salon+styling experience here today. I really liked what I saw on the Instagram page as well, especially with (Black/African) natural hair. Ashleah and Gigi tag teamed to give me the absolute best Deva Cut, and styling technique on my type 3c/4a hair. What you see is pure definition and moisture lock-in. Plus, I have an instruction sheet so I can do it myself. (Make sure you have a diffuser and hood dryer at home though, but you can grab those on Amazon. Oh and towels, for the amount of wet hair shaking). And honestly, if I hadn't needed to buy the product, it's pricing is on par with other high end haircut places and considering I won't need to go back for at least another six weeks, I'm really impressed. Everyone from staff to to other clientele was also very friendly. Very easy to find on U Street and my appointment started on time and only took two hours. read more

I had my first appointment at this salon with Ginger, and I would give her skills as a textured hair stylist 5 stars. She is clearly a master at her craft. I'm giving a 2 star review because of the customer service, starting with the receptionist, who acted as if I had committed some sort of sin by showing up to my appointment early. She was short with me at checkin and checkout, and didn't even offer me a glass of water. This salon felt like a club that I was not a member of, which is off-putting in general, but especially at a salon of this price point ($130 for a haircut). This was just the second time I've gone to a professional stylist since my big chop in 2016 and Marian not only heard every one of my conflicting wants and hair goals but achieved the exact look I wanted without trimming my hair. My hair was in really bad shape - another salon mangled it and gave me an extreme case of triangle head. Mel brought my curls back to life! She knows how to cut curly hair - she carefully did a dry cut, then washed and styled the hair, and made some small adjustments once it was dry again. I left feeling amazing and I keep getting compliments on my hair or that I look great (it's just the hair - that's ALL that's changed!). It's been a few weeks and the hair just keeps looking better - it's growing out nicely. I also want to give Mel. H a shout out for taking the time to show me how to style the curls myself and not being pushy about products. She said I could use my own, but I bought the Oiudad sold at the salon, and am so glad I did. My curls look shiny, bouncy, and not thirsty (my default) or crunchy. Got a curly cut from Joy last week. She already is a stylist & is learning to work with textured hair. She is amazing! She listened & understood what I wanted. Sooo patient with me. I've had several appointments in the last two years, the first was great, the following unremarkable, the latest abysmal. Stylist was 15mins late, instead of giving me more time, was prickly, rushed and the result was messy and ugly. Another stylist walked around without a mask despite the salon's own requirements. I still tipped 20%. I sent a message directly to the team rather than publish, and received no reply or acknowledgment. Baffled that they can charge such high end prices and offer this kind of service. read more
