I went for a haircut with Michelle today. This was my first time at Fiddleheads and I had been looking very hard for people who can cut curly hair competently in DC. Everyone in the salon was nice and welcoming, including Michelle, but I was extremely disappointed by the haircut. I had explained very clearly that I wanted a minimal haircut, that preserved the curls and the volume. I just wanted a clean-up essentially. Michelle ended up cutting about 2 inches from the hair in the back. This set back about 4 months of growth. Now I'm out $150, and I would pay twice as much to have back my hair as it was it this morning. Needless to say, I won't be going back. read more

Curly girls, go see Vicky! I was in need of a trim because I didn't trust just anyone to trim my hair and had avoided getting one for some time. A friend recommended Fiddleheads and I read reviews and determined that this location and Vicky was what I needed. And I made a great choice! Vicky is very chill, but also very knowledgeable about curly hair. We talked for a few minutes about what I wanted/didn't want and showed her some pictures, she explained what she would do, and we got started. I love love love that she trimmed my hair dry (I had washed and styled it the day before) so she could see how my curls actually fell with all their different textures. Then she washed me (I think I fell asleep, lol). She sat me under a bonnet dryer for about 20 mins then finished with diffusing. As pictures have shown, she instructs you to lean way back in the chair, lean forward in the chair, and tilt sideways to increase the amount of volume. Then she told me to shake my head. She finished off by adding some pomade and trimming a few more strands. I got pictures of the products she used and headed to Ulta. I'm very happy with the shape she gave me. It is a little short, but my hair is healthier and looks better. There's a little more frizz in the back where my texture is tighter, but I can work on that when I do my hair next. I just might be back to make a color change in a few months! Update 2 months later: I called the Dupont location to find out when I might need an appointment to start stripping the red from my hair so I could color it again by my birthday at the end of the summer (had discussed this option with Vicky at my last visit). The man who handles calls took my name and number and said he would have Vicky call me back. No call back was received. So a few weeks later I called the other location to ask the same question. This time I was told that I should go ahead and schedule the color appointment around my birthday and that someone would get back to me to answer my question about when to start stripping the red. It's been a couple of weeks and still no call back. I really wanted to return to this salon, but with customer service like this, it's increasingly difficult. read more

It had been more than 2 years since I went to a salon for a cut. My hair is wavy/curly and it was below my shoulders. Because I stopped covering the grey during COVID my hair was looking like a cartoon witch. A friend recommended to me that I see Vicki at Fiddleheads and I am so glad I did! Vicki is delightful and clearly enjoys her work. She looked carefully at my hair and its curl pattern. I told her how much I wanted cut off and she did exactly that. Vickie suggested layers to frame my face and she did a great job with that. After washing I asked for diffusion (using a blow dryer with diffuser so as not to disturb curls) because I wanted a finished look when I left the salon. I went to Fiddlehead for the first time about two years ago and received a great cut but very poor styling that I had to fix right after my service. I tried again this month and had an equally poor styling experience and was not answered when I reached out via email. I went for highlights that came out much darker than I requested, after I was reassured multiple times the color would come out as desired and even after the service that it would "look different in the light." In my booking, I explicitly asked for loose finger coiling because of the haphazard manner my type 4 was styled at my previous appointment. Despite this request in my booking, they scheduled another person too closely behind me and I ended up styling my own hair in the salon. When I reached out about a potential partial refund of some sort due to receiving the wrong color AND having to style my own hair, my email was ignored twice. I would not recommend this salon for styling and services, ESPECIALLY if you have type 4 curls/coils. read more

Vicky used to be my go to. Until she wasn't. The last couple of times I saw her she was super unprofessional. The first time she was in a bad mood and she said she was going through a hard week so I let it go but I left the salon feeling like she dumped that stress and negativity on to me (rather than just expressing it wasn't the best week but still being welcoming and professional). I left feeling super uncomfortable. But again this was someone who I had good experiences with before and really liked so I thought it was a one off and came again after that. This time the bad energy was not as intense but still negative, almost an annoyance at having to be there. She complained that she needed to get new tools because the ones she had weren't as good anymore- while cutting my hair with those same tools. Later I realized her clippers had knicked my neck. At the end of the day clients are spending time and energy and trusting stylists with their hair. I'd rather a stylist cancel on me than disrespect my time, trust, and loyalty by treating me poorly once I've traveled to the salon and am in their chair. So not ok. Thankful to have since moved on to a stylist who's super professional always and wish I had sooner. read more

Worst customer experience. You could be dying in the hospital and unable to call to reschedule your appointment ...and they won't give a damn! It's not like they've even attempt to call on the day of to check on your whereabouts. They have your CC info already, so all they do is charge for the appt and they are happy to get paid. I emailed them twice saying I was unable to speak from illness and wanted to reschedule. I NEVER got an email back. Great way to know you guys care about your customers, seems like it's just all about profit. Luckily I'm able to book a curly hair appt somewhere else where they don't have this ridiculous requirement of 100% deposit and they actually reach out to you. read more

Ummmm...so I don't recommend. I had my hair cut in July, and I'm still waiting for it to grow back. She cut my long, curly hair so short and had very disparaging comments for hair as well. Go to a person who actually has curly hair to bring glory to your crown. read more

What a great gem for curly-haired-girls!! I just wish I would've found this spot sooner in my life. After deciding to go to another random place to get my curls chopped (rather unsuccessfully, I might add), I knew I had to go somewhere to get a fix, and quick! We were coming up on Valentine's day and my long-distance boyfriend was visiting, and I didn't want him to see my uneven locks! I called to make an appointment and they were able to get my in the very next day - thank goodness! However, that very next day also happened to be a snow-day so they had to cancel everything. I wrote back and explained my situation, and the owner was able to reschedule me for within 24 hours (aka: before my bf arrived). After I found the spot on the 3rd floor, I took a seat and waited for my turn. They were running about 10 minutes late, but I could tell it was because they were taking care of every customer very well. Michelle cut, washed, and dried my hair like a complete pro. She was full of energy, life, and was easy to talk to. I usually don't bring a picture of what I wanted my cut to be like, but I did this time and she look one glance and knew exactly how to go. I was super impressed - she kept checking in to make sure it was how I liked it and even did a bit of maintenance in the back when I asked for a more straight-line cut across my back (as opposed to coming to a "V" shape). I really enjoyed the personal attention and the complete empathy for dealing with curls my whole life! Checking out was super easy, and they emailed me my receipt (and let you add tip onto your credit card). The cut ran me $75 which is a bit more than I would normally spend, but it was so worth it. Vicki was OUTSTANDING with my daughter's middle back length 3C/4A super dense and coily hair. She did the Devacut and we are sooo pleased! Vicki is in Dupont Circle in DC and I was able to find a parking lot using the SpotHero App so I felt safer than catching the subway since I am not familiar with DC. She works very efficiently but with any great stylist, many people rebook immediately so we booked on January for a April 5th appt. We were in by 5 and out by 7....AMAZING!!!! I've been to Fiddleheads (Florida ave location) a few times over the last couple years. I've typically booked with Wangui who has been awesome to me. I have (had) long curly hair, and Wangui has been great with giving me layers and pintura highlights. This review, however, is for Vicky. I've been debating chopping off all my hair for a while now. Lots of color over the years left it stringy and a bit unmanageable at times. I've stalked Vicky for a minute and finally decided to make an appointment for the big chop. From the moment I got there, Vicky was super attentive and gave me her opinion: the chop I wanted was too drastic and that I should leave a little bit of hair so that I don't hate myself the next day lol (note: I've had long hair my whole life!) She was so excited and made sure I was comfortable with what we were about to do. I had no intentions of getting the cut I ended up with, but once Vicky did the big chop, we played around with ideas and settled on a short angled bob. I can't believe I wrote a whole review calling Vicky by the wrong name. Sorry Vicky! Vicky has cut my hair twice now and I've been very happy with the results both times. My curl pattern is a little inconsistent around my head but she was able to create a shape I really like that works with my hair in different styles. I haven't had to wait more than 10 minutes to be seen and appreciate that I can count on sticking to a schedule. I go in with my hair already washed and dried and Vicky takes her time trimming my hair in sections that naturally curl/clump together. The dry cut alone is $95 (went up from an already steep $85, yikes!) so it's definitely a splurge for someone like me who doesn't otherwise get salon services. The DuPont circle location is convenient for me and if you drive, there's streets with non-metered parking nearby! read more

I requested an angled shoulder length cut from Michelle and got a chin length bob with 2 weird long strands at the front. I wanted to be able to keep my hair ponytail length but it's far to short and has been difficult to manage in the summer heat humidity. I haven't gotten my hair cut in two years. It needed shaping and my ends really needed to be chopped. The salon is small but very cozy and clean. I was greeted immediately and was offered water by the woman at the desk. I went to the Fiddleshead on 17th street. My stylist was Vicky and she was AMAZING! We spoke for 20 min just about my hair routine. How I currently wear my hair and what kind of style I wanted. She was upfront in how much she would cut and she made me feel very comfortable. My hair came or AMAZING! My curls have never looked like this before and my hair feels so light and bouncy. I was truly shocked at the final product and I could not have been happier. 1/13/18- Elena was THE best!!! I have been blowdrying and flat ironing my hair since I've been 18, I'm 33 now. Although, I considered my hair to be healthy (it looked flowy, full and shiny, sometimes ‍) but otherwise, it was "fine". Any who, heard about Elena from Yelp reviews and she didn't disappoint. She took us on time, friendly, professional, informative and she also took her time finger detangling my hair (major plus!!). She clipped my damaged ends so well but didn't cut off too much. She diffused my hair to perfection that it looked even better as the day went on! Major plus is that my husband LOVED it! Elena didn't push me to buy Devacurl products, which was great! Although, I plan to purchase a few from their line as they have natural ingredients. Elena gave me a great foundation to continue the journey of taking care of my natural hair and I am so pleased! Also, I saw Vicki and her clients hair was noticeably great as well for anyone who is considering her. Beth was really helpful as well, she was knowledgeable about my hair and what was best for it as well! Elena and Beth suggested I didn't much which was refreshing because during this transition, I overused products. Now, I am not as anxious about what to do. I've been coming here for more than 3 years. This is the only place I've ever gotten my hair cut where I haven't cried the next day & ended up fixing it myself. I went to Vicky the first couple years I came here, the last 3 times I've gone to Elena bc Vicky's schedule was full but I absolutely love both of them! In October I had a disaster highlighting my hair and ended up with a weird halo of trashy bleached blonde color all along my hair line. I wore a headband to work for a day and a half until Elena could fix it, she did a phenomenal job! Meh, I've experienced WAY better. My stylist was Beth. 1) This was what really ticked me off..to set my hair, she barely styled my hair with products (5 seconds maybe) If you are a curly girl, you know that you dont just slop on and pump the curls a couple time to get it to style. Then she just sat me under the dryer...no diffusing...no nothing. This is NOT typical for a deva salon and very lazy. My hair came out flat and the curls were wonky as hell. 2) Of course even though I requested just a trim and NOT a cut. I lost about 3 inches. I don't know...maybe she felt like she knew what's best for me. 3) If you are expecting the typical "Salon experience" you usually get when you pay similar rates, don't. It's more of a mom/pop feel, and set up like your best girlfriends basement who does hair on the side. Don't expect to be offered any beverage either (water/coffee). I'm wondering if maybe I came in when she was having an off day and was feeling lazy and tired. Either way, no excuse. I've had many Deva cuts in the past, and when I have, it's gone completely different. I know better. They know better. Amazing atmosphere! I went to Vicky yo get a deva cut, and she did amazing. I was nervous but excited and I knew I needed a cut and some treatment for my hair since not having a trim and getting some braids. When i took my braids out my hair was just a mess. I had my hair cut yesterday by Vicky. It had been almost 3 1/2 years since my hair was butchered by a Quidad curly cut expert stylist so I took my time researching a professional that knows how to work with my hair. FYI: Take the metro and walk up 17th from Farragut west...there is no real parking around the shop. Vicky knew right away what she was going to do with my hair. It's is said that anyone that does something for 6 years or more is considered and expert. Vicky has been cutting curly hair for 16year the receptionist told me(super expert). It's also amazing because she does not have curly hair (which makes me laugh). My experience was amazing. She made me feel very comfortable and we had great conversation about the craziness of curly hair and how to manage it. There was never a time that I had a WTF moment when she was cutting my hair and that's a first for me. She helped to reinforce in me that my natural curly pattern is beautiful and I need to let my hair be free! This is my new Montra when I am doing my hair"Let it be, your curls should be free". (I am a serial curl twister so my curls are never allowed to do what they do naturally) I am embracing my volume and natural curl and it feels right. I walked into my consultation at Fiddleheads on a hot Thursday night a mission. I met Vicky, sat down in the styling chair, and pulled down my shoulder length curls. Then I told her I wanted to chop it all off. For curly haired girls, this is rare. Almost pathological. Vicky, needless to say, was...concerned. I showed her a photo of a similar cut I had back in my edgy undergrad days, and she was transformed. Giddy. She wanted to cut it on the spot. I stuck to my weekend appointment, lest I make a huge mistake and show up bald to work the next day. On Saturday, Vicky had shears in hand and a smile from ear to ear. I heard a bit of a Joker-like laugh as she chopped, but her enthusiasm was endearing. All the gals in the salon were into it too. I walked away with a badass cut and headed next door to CVS to get short-hair product. I styled at home and realized I left too much length on top. I called back and Vicky squeezed me in same-day and trimmed to perfection. I feel like a brand new me, and it's thanks to Vicky. Unfortunately my budget can't handle $70 trims every 3 weeks, so I alternate cuts with other salons. I could dock a star for that, but they've got to pay Dupont rent. I've had great Deva cuts in the past from Vicky but she was unavailable, so I booked a Deva cut with Michelle. That service was the worst haircut that I have ever received. I was clear about the length and shape I wanted, noting that my hair shrinks a lot when cut -- Michelle said she understood but then proceeded to chop my curls much shorter, particularly on the sides where I specified the length to be past my shoulders was cut to above my chin, creating a very uneven and short "triangle head" effect. Rather than cut the ringlets as a Deva cut, she seemed rushed, running several clients behind, so after waiting 40 minutes, she first approximated the overall amount of hair to trim by cutting my hair in one fell swoop to one length, which I thought was odd. Then she proceeded to pull my curls taut and finger comb through each section of my hair as she cut, rather than cut according to the curl pattern. When she started like this, I asked if she would individually cut the ringlets like a traditional Deva cut and she said she would, but then continued the rest of the haircut in this way. I've been getting Deva cuts for nearly a decade in various salons across the country and have never had my hair cut this way for this service, which completely misses the point of getting a haircut technique specific to curly textured hair. She also left for five minutes during the middle of my haircut with no explanation and made me feel extremely uncared for as a customer. I reached out to the salon to express how disappointed I was -- that I didn't receive the service I paid for, which has ruined the way I wear my hair until it has sufficient time to regrow. I have yet to receive a response. I also feel nickel and dimed, still having to prepay to choose whether to add on services that are standard at most other salons when the starting price is already as high at other places that include washing at drying at this point in the pandemic. That shouldn't be necessary to ensure my haircut is performed competently but I was willing to do it because I expected the same quality of service I received from Vicky. Unfortunately, my hair is the worst it has looked in 15 years, does not work for my curl texture at all, and I have to wear it up since I can't straighten it in August in DC. I've enjoyed my hair cuts at the 17th st location, but my low rating is due to awful experiences with how they manage their salon and a color treatment. First off - the young man who manages their calls is extremely rude. I received unnecessary attitude when trying to book an appointment and again when I called with a payment concern. I almost mentioned his rudeness when I came in for an appointment, but decided otherwise. On a positive note, Beth cut my hair and was so kind and talented! I've enjoyed working with both her and Elena. However, I paid $340 for a simple cut and about 4 strands of highlights. The highlights did not turn out anywhere near the color I wanted, and look like a basic yellow-blond bleach. Absolutely not worth the price. Additionally, I was also told over the phone that the price of this would be $210. My biggest concern is that I did not immediately receive a receipt, and when I called to inquire about why I was charged over $120 more than expected, my concerns were not taken seriously. The man on the phone continued to be rude and unhelpful. I feel as if I was robbed by this salon. Their hairdressers are talented, but I will never be returning to Fiddleheads. read more

This was my first time going to a hair salon in DC. The reason why I generally don't go is because I am generally disappointed. I was looking for a style that would go with my face shape and was hoping to have someone giving me an answer at Fiddleheads. I had a 10-min consultation with Vicky who basically explained that she would cut and show me how to care for my hair... Ok... Waste of time but I was excited to come back and see what she would actually do. To be honest, she did a really good job at washing and cutting my hair. It was basic but well done. She does know about curls. The products were not the best for my hair but it did not harm it. I was just expecting something much better given the reviews that I read before going. Ok so I thought I'd give an update post initial cut, since I'm not always "in love" with my hair immediately following the cut. I'm actually going to give this closer to 4 stars mainly because after my first hair wash I realized that more of my hair was cut then I had anticipated. Thankfully its only hair and it will grow back. But I won't lie I wasn't expecting so much to be cut. And I guess on the plus side eventually the weather might warm up so a shorter do isn't always a bad thing. Final verdict, I'd still return but I think I'm going to try another salon in NY for the next cut as they seem to cut hair in the same way one of my fave stylists used to do. I visited Fiddleheads today for the first time. After reading all of the reviews, I was adamant about seeing Vicky and potentially getting a deva cut. I first booked a consultation to ensure I knew the plan before scissors came near me (I'm type A like that). Vicky was very warm, patient with me and all of my questions, and - most importantly - displayed a level of confidence for cutting hair with multiple-textures; I learned that I only have three different textures though it sure feels like more some days. A few weeks later, I came in for the cut and couldn't be happier. A word of advice for anyone who is seriously considering a deva cut at Fiddleheads, book a consultation and appointment at the same time (for different days, of course), especially if you plan to see Vicky.
