This was my first devacut, done by Kia. Like many curly-haired folks, it's always been a gamble - one that I usually lose - getting a haircut. I was nervous bc in the past I've been told by plenty of salons that they can "totally, absolutely, no problem!" cut curly hair well. THEY CAN NOT. I've been curious to try the devacut for years. Today I took the plunge and am never going back. Kia 'got' my hair without me having to say more than "I want volume please send help." She gave me short layers and a face-framing front. My hair is thin, 3A hair that looses body in humidity and she gave it LIFE. I will absolutely be going back. Btw for folks planning to use this salon - you can't leave tips on a credit card and only some of the stylists accept Venmo for tips - so bring cash! read more

Found this place on yelp. I'm was looking for a hair stylist that could cut my curly hair. I called and scheduled and appointment with Tiffany. This place is right in DC so finding parking is almost impossible and definitely annoying. But it ended up being worth it! I was hoping to go there to get a Deva cut so I washed it the day before and left all product out of it. Unfortunately, I decided to pull it back in a bun and it pulled my curl pattern out so by the time I got to the salon we had to go the normal route. Tiffany washed me up and then began cutting! She talked to me throughout the whole process so I knew exactly what she was doing. She told me about the products she was using, asked me about my normal routines and gave me tips on how to keep my curls looking good. She ended up cutting it a little shorter than I wanted. But I feel like that happens often and my hair grows back fast so I'm not upset. My curls feel light, bouncy and healthy. Perfect for the summer. I got my first trim here after not trimming my hair for over a year and a half AND significantly damaging it by trying to go blonde at home (smh). My hair was breaking off in the back, creating a hole of sorts, while the front of my hair was growing long. It looked crazy. I have very curly (3c if you follow hair types) "ethnic" hair so if you know what that's like, you know how hard it is to find a good hair stylist for trims. I was very happily surprised to discover that Geneva, the salon owner, was a wiz with my haircut. She cut it wet, not dry, and explained to me the different methods of cutting curly hair. Her breadth of knowledge in curly hair is really impressive, especially considering she doesn't have curly hair. At first, she was kind of treading lightly with the scissors so as to try to keep my length, as my hair was pretty long in the front. But I really wanted healthy hair so I just told her to let loose and cut off all the damage. The cut turned out great!!! I love the way it moves and how healthy it looks now. I don't have a before picture to see the hole I had in the back of my hair, but I have an after pic! This pic is from yesterday, so the cut is almost a week old now, and this wash n go is a couple days old. But I like my hair big and fluffy so it works for me. Overall, a great experience. Geneva has cut and colored my hair for over 30 years. She helped me find the prefect red that I literally have kept for all these years. She did my hair for my wedding as I wouldn't trust anyone else on that special day. Even tho I live in CA whenever I am close to DC I come to her. I have curly hair that does not respond well to the Deva dry cut process (and yes I have tried a multitude of stylists). Sadly, no one seems to know how to cut curly hair any other way anymore and it is a real challenge to get a decent haircut. I have been in CA for 8 years and while I found a colorist, no one comes close to cutting my hair like Geneva. Curly, straight, coloring and highlights - she does it all and she really does it well. I was looking for my first Deva Cut and decided to try XYZ. I booked appointment with Geneva and absolutely loved my experience there! Geneva asked me about my preferences and if I don't mind my hair a bit layered due to the technique and how much I would like to cut. My hair has really dry split ends and actually didn't look that good, but Geneva saved it! She was very kind to explain me every step in washing/conditioning/drying my hair, kind of the routine I can and should to at home. Not only she cut my hair nicely, but also gave me great tips - can't wait to try them at home. If you have curly or wavy hair, you should see Geneva at least for all her knowledge about it, that definitely worth it. Just got a haircut yesterday from Ken with the yelp discount deal going on. Up until now I've only had awful haircuts from DC stylists and my trips to SF are not the frequent anymore so I can't go to my OG stylists. However, Ken is AWESOME, I'm a little hesitant in writing this review bc I don't want it to be hard for me to get another appointment. He started off asking me what I wanted to do with my hair, and I told him nothing but "I want to keep it below my shoulders and I don't want short bangs" and he offered some suggestions that sounded great and he used some really good products on my hair as well. I walked out with this amazing cut (everyone was kinda checking me out on the street!) and a bottle of the product that he used. The thing I liked best about Ken was that he didn't try to oversell anything and he actually offered suggestions based on my hair type and my face shape. Not just what's in fashion right now. I really like XYZ Salon - totally worth going back to, even at the full price. NOTE: you can't put the tip on the credit card, so bring cash, I feel awful because I only had like $8 in wallet, so I undertipped Ken and didn't get to tip the lady who shampoos (who's amazing as well). This was my first time trying XYZ. To be fair, I am a picky guy who has generally longish (slightly over the ears) hair... The salon is nice inside and my barber was pretty good. He was an actual barber and not some off the street person. He didn't talk too much and gave me a decent haircut. However, I rated XYZ only 2/5 stars. For the past 9 years I have had my haircut outside of DC...which has become a real pain. At my regular place it usually takes my barber almost an hour to cut my hair. XYZ did it in 25 minutes (including wash)... Because I wasn't a regular customer, they rushed me between the appointments of their regulars and attention to detail was lost. Secondly, a men's haircut (which took 25 minutes and only included a pre-wash) cost $60. That is a lot even for DC's standards. If you're looking to spend $60 and you're a guy...go to Grooming Lounge or somewhere else. Finally, after being taken on the haircut charge I went to leave a tip. (I received a decent cut...but I could have received a "decent" cut a Great Clips....I pay the extra money for an awesome cut...which I didn't receive here.) Anyways, I went to leave a $15 tip (cash only - annoying) and the receptionist said, "That's it, just $15?" I was astonished. This had never happened to me before...especially since I was only there 25 minutes, I received a simple men's cut and $15 is more than 20%!!!! I was shocked at her comment and the fact that I ended up paying $80 total for what I had received. It is for all of these reasons above that I will never return to ZXY Salon and I'd advise any man looking for a cut to do the same. read more

I went to the XYZ salon back in January, I usually wait at least 2 months before reviewing a salon to wait and see how my hair grows out. I have rather tight and frizzy curls (Type 3) and it's been my life's mission to do-something-about-it. A battle with genetics isn't much of a battle. More like running myself into a wall in hopes that one day it'll crumble or turn into wood, I've tried every method imaginable. Ken was my stylist at XYZ and of all the stylists I had, was the most honest and thoughtful one. He took a really good look at my hair from root to tip (in my past experiences, 50% of stylist don't and 40% didn't know how!), was leading the conversation but wasn't pushy and made very logical suggestions. Then he offered quiet time while he slices away (brilliant!). I usually end up with ironed straight hair from a salon because most stylists tend to hit a limit on what they can do with my hair, but from XYZ I had the confidence of walking out with my curls...I still looked like a poodle, but a well groomed poodle at that. The cut also lasted for months and the shape stayed consistent. Right now, Ken is the only stylist on my list that knows how to cut my hair curly and that's something to toast to! read more

What there is a stylist named David who is not only knowledgeable and good at his job but doesn't molest you with mindless chatter? Oh this is perfect! Prices are normal for the DC but still steep for me so when my jewy senses began tingling after finding a coupon to get a free hair cut at xyz salon I had to take a chance. I read the reviews and chose David. Good choice on my part, for sure! I loved my cut. I loved the way he styled it and I have actually been able to replicate the style and it has been fantastic. Love this place! I've always had difficult hair, thick, dry, with a lot of body. Recently it's become ginuinely curly and I had no idea what to do. Finding a salon is always a nightmare as I've had my hair cut uneven more times than I can rememer. Often I'd just wait to visit family in NC to go to my old hairdresser so I'd wait about 6 months between cuts. Finally I have a place in DC I can trust! Tiffany was great, she took her time to go over exactly what my hair care routine should be, what products I need, how to use a defuser, and how to pin it up at night to make a wash last longer. Ken made me learn to embrace and love my curls. He is the BEST. I have surfed around salons in DC for four and a half years bouncing from place to place after a few cuts, which usually resulted in my waiting for the holidays to have my old hairdresser squeeze me in. Then I found XYZ in a Bloomspot deal a year ago and figured I'd give it a shot, and I am since a loyal devotee to Ken's Deva magic. I used to hide my curls with blowouts and prayed that it would look less drab than it actually did, but Ken seriously makes me love my hair in its natural state, with no work needed. He is such a genuinely nice person and such a professional, and the salon is SO understated and classy and unpretentious. I've often found that salons in DC are either totally over the top or are really basic, dirty and cheap; this place has a very diverse clientele of loyal followers and it's set-back from Dupont so it's very relaxing and private. When I first moved to DC alittle over a year ago, one of the most annoying parts was finding an affordable and decent haircut. I use to live right across from Salon XYZ so that was the first salon I tried out. Turned out to be the perfect situation. Not only was the location convenient for myself but my haircut and my overall experience at the Salon has been just great. Ive been now going there for over a year now and I have no complaints. Geneva, who cuts my hair as well as owns the salon, is just truly a wonderful person and a pleasure to talk with. Its hard to find salon owners that truly love what they do and come to work everyday as happy as she is. You can truly see that she cares about her customers. I booked with Geneva, the owner for my thick curly hair. I got Balayage and a haircut. Thankfully unlike some salons in DC, she did blow out my hair at the end, not just send me out with wet hair. She did a great job on the color and is quite knowledgeable, and did a thorough consultation. Color and cut looked gorgeous. She used her Deva Curl products which I thought were interesting but didn't purchase because I just don't think they're for me. The salon is pretty small, but nicely appointed. They provide water, tea, etc. to drink if you'd like (but sadly no wine). I really liked Geneva but otherwise the salon had an empty feeling, maybe because my appointment was 5-8pm. I will say that personally I wouldn't go to anyone but Geneva here - I picked her because of her great reviews here on Yelp and they are spot-on. Another stylist working a the same time however was clearly a novice who was unsure and didn't seem to know what she was doing. At one point Geneva had to step away to assist this stylist in her discussions with another client about her hair color needs. The price is spot on for this area (though twice what I used to pay in the midwest! Ah, DC) and booking and adjusting my time were no problem. Everyone's friendly and helpful. read more

I really like salon xyz! I've seen Kia and Geneva and both have done a nice job on the color. After reading the reviews of problems with cuts with Kia, I'll definitely save my cuts for Geneva appointments. The only frustration is that my haircuts are never more than a tiny dusting on the end- and paying $80 (same price) as someone doing a full cut or new style is a bit frustrating. I wish they had different price points for cuts based on length/style/time. My last cut took about 4 minutes with Geneva and I had to pay $80 for that. Color wise though, they're great and a decently affordable option in dc area. Preston the front desk manager is also quite friendly! read more

I was searching for a new place to get my curly haircut and the website for XYZ Salon stated they had at least one stylist that did the Devacut. I called and asked the receptionist who told me that Kia "had a lot of experience and was excellent with curly hair." Sadly my experience was the exact opposite. The consultation was fine, Kia asked me a number of questions and I even explained that all I wanted was a trim with the same shape of my previous haircut (which I had 7 weeks earlier), I even showed her a picture of the haircut and how it looked on me. She sent me to get my hair washed, halfway through the wash I remembered that with the Deva Cut you get your hair cut dry. I stopped the wash and asked and she told me that Deva cuts could be done wet or dry. I'm no hair expert so I (stupidly) assumed she had learned a technique I was not familiar with - nope she was lying to me. Admittedly she offered to dry my hair and cut it but at that point I was frustrated and went along. She then proceeded to comb and cut my hair wet, something that I had not had done in many years. She also pushed me to blow dry my hair but at that point I realized she had no clue what she was doing so I refused. I NEVER wear my hair straight, so there is no point in straighten it at the salon. Once the hair was dried curly and Kia made a few cuts my hair was a hot mess. One side was at least an inch longer than the other and she had given me a terrible bob. Exactly what I had asked her not to do, I looked like a middle-age soccer mom, who cut her own hair during a meltdown. Kia claimed that the difference in lengths of my hair was because of my curls, and how different they were on different parts of my head, dah! This is why you cut the hair dry. I was so mad I started crying. Eventually Kia called another stylist in and the other stylist "fixed" the cut, she had to chop at least one more inch of length all around to fix the unevenness. The front is still a mess but the second stylist did the best she could with the horror show I had going on my head. I now have a decent bob, still looks nothing like what I wanted, but it looks like a haircut done by a professional. I'll just have to let it grow and go elsewhere to have it fixed. I have a high tolerance for non-perfect haircuts, I've had my haircut at a cosmetology schools, $10 specials, and barber shops, and Kia gave me a worse haircut than any of those cuts, actually she gave me the worst haircut I've ever experienced. I want to be clear that I'm so upset because 1. I was told Kia knew the Deva method, she does not. 2. When I asked Kia about her decision to cut my hair wet she lied to me and said the Deva method allows for wet cuts, this is not true (I looked it up), 3. When my hair was butchered there was no apology from Kia, she just passed the responsibility to another stylist and hid. 4. No word from anyone at the salon about this awful experience. 5. I still had to pay $85. Not a good experience, I would definitely not recommend if you love your curls. read more

I've been putting off this review. Let me start by saying my appointment was in June and I have VERY long, thick, wavy hair. I also rarely get a haircut - I love my long hair and I'm usually terrified of the hairstylist because of one horrific experience in my teenage years where someone chopped it all off after I told him not to. My hair needed a desperate cut and thus began my search. I stumbled upon XYZ Salon because of a Ruelala voucher that was for partial highlights and a haircut for $90. After reading such great reviews, and wanting to give my color some hair for the summer, I took the plunge. My appointment was with Ken and I was excited for him to cut my hair because of all the people who said he's great with wavy/curly hair. The end result was terrible. Absolutely terrible. First, when I got to the salon (on time) I had to wait almost 15 minutes for my stylist to finish his previous appointment and get to me. I'm a pretty patient person, so that didn't bother me as much. Next, Ken and I talked about what color I wanted for my highlights. I've NEVER colored or highlighted my hair so I told him I wanted something subtle that you would just be able to see under the sun. Something noticeable but not too drastic for summer. He said to go with a caramel color; okay, great. He put the highlights in, I went for my shampoo and that's where disaster began. When I got back into the chair and saw the highlights in my wet hair, they were so bright! I thought okay, maybe this is what they're supposed to look like and once my hair dries and is styled, it will look different. He then got on with the cut. I told him to take off the dead ends, which there were a lot of. He barely took anything off! My hair looked EXACTLY the same from when I walked in. Next came the blow dry, ugh. I've had a lot of amazing blow dries in my life and have never been more disappointed with my blow dry at XYZ. My hair at the end was pouffy, frizzy and not smooth at all. When he said he was done, I was like uhhh...can you make it a bit smoother? He goes "Well your hair is so damaged that it won't get any smoother. Also, I don't have time because I have another client." EXCUSE ME?! When I blow dry my hair at home, it looks 10x better! Also, I had to wait 15 minutes while you finished your previous client, so I think I deserve a bit more time. I was so annoyed that I didn't say anything and just left. After seeing the highlights in my hair after it was horribly styled, they were just so orange and brassy. They looked AWFUL. I had to tone them down with dark brown hair color. They look somewhat decent now, but I refuse to ever color/highlight my hair again so I'm just waiting for them to grow out. I don't know if the horrible service was because I used a voucher? I don't think that should have been an issue. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I was horrified, though. read more

I want to update my review because of my last visit. I came in to get a full highlight and wasn't as impressed as I was the last time I was there. I was again with the owner and made sure to request her, because of my last experience with her. The color was "just ok" and didn't last long either. Furthermore, I had some dye bleeding in different parts of my hair towards the scalp - definitely no acceptible for an experienced colorist. When he started cutting my hair, he did not rush the process and did a superb job. He then washed my hair and explained to me step by step what I had to do to take care of my curls. I'm interning in the area for the summer and had no idea where to go to get my hair cut and colored. I researched salons on Yelp and decided that I would try XYZ out. I have wavy, frizzy hair and am nervous to do much with it because I've had so many bad haircuts in the past. Within five minute of talking to Ken, I was trusted him with my hair. He asked what I wanted to do to it and he didn't try to push any new styles on me (I don't have layers), but he did tell me that I shouldn't be afraid of layers with the DevaCurl cut and that next time he would be happy to put in some good, curly-girl layers. I've been to this friendly, unpretentious salon twice and seen the owner, Geneva, both times. The first time I went (on a friend's recommdation (she loves XYZ but sees another stylist) geneva gave me a great cut & I felt like she really listened to me & 'got' what I wanted. The second time I went, she totally botched my highlights which I HATED. I was very explicit about what I wanted & ended up with something totally different. I did not go back to her to see if she could 'fix' it with a rinse, etc. While I may go back to XYZ since I liked the relaxed vibe, I won't give geneva another chance. Ok so I'll start off by saying that this was the very first time I took my 8 year old curly haired daughter for a professional haircut. Up until now, I would clip her ends (or at least I tried) at home out of fear that someone would ruin her hair and leave it looking like an afro (as my daughter would say). Needless to say, my daughter will no longer have to succumb to the torture of uneven haircuts, never again! We truly found the "Curly Hair God". Ken was absolutely amazing and took his time to show me and my daughter how to properly maintain her curls and the products to use to keep it well moisturised. After reading the mixed reviews about Geneva, I was a little apprehensive about letting her cut my hair. But I have to say, I LOVE my haircut. And let me assure you that I am *not* someone who generally gets excited about haircuts. That said, I was a bit annoyed that I had to wait at various points before and during the cut -- since she's the owner of the salon, she is keeping an eye on everything and dealing with any customer issues that come up. And since she seemed distracted by those things, I was more than a little concerned about how my hair was going to turn out. But again, my hair came out fantastic. I did notice that most of the negative reviews re Geneva had to do with coloring, whereas I only did the Bloomspot deal for the haircut and conditioning, so maybe that had something to do with it. As a new DC resident, I was surprised by how expensive hair salon prices start at! I found that cuts at Bubble or Partners could start at $70, so I decided to go to a non-chain salon instead. I saw Geneva, salon owner, and she was just all around great! For a wash, cut, and dry the cut cost $80, but it was totally worth it! From the moment I walked in, the front desk staff was very kind and courteous, even offered me a glass of wine or champagne. I sat down with Geneva before washing my hair, and she commented on the health and appearance of my hair. I had told her what I liked, and she offered insightful feedback about what will work and would look good on me without being too pushy. If you have curly hair that needs cutting, Ken is your answer. If you have no idea what you want other than "something different," Ken can help. I'm a guy who'd not had his curls cut in 15 years. No one (including me) knew what I looked like as an adult with any other hairstyle, but I knew it needed to happen. I had a few very vague preferences that I didn't know how to translate into useful directions. Ken sat and talked with me for a while, trying to sort out what I actually wanted and what my personality was to match. He talked me through everything, step by step, asking me for feedback as we went. At the end I was still in a bit of shock (my hair hadn't been above my shoulders in a decade) and couldn't give him useful feedback. Ken's answer was to give me time to adjust to the new looks; if I wasn't happy with it, to come back in and we'd sort it out. That visit never came. My friends and family have all given great reviews. And more importantly I love it. So much so I'm kicking myself for not getting it done sooner. I put the fate of my hair in the hands of a man I'd never met before, and he worked to understand me and make my new cut fit my face, my personality, my style, and the city. David is fantastic - it is that simple and you really need not read further, although I hope you do. David is a great stylist and truly special person - hair cuts should be fun beyond talent. My stylist moved from DC unexpectedly. I had a connection to David and had met one of the owners, Patrick. Both impressed me as human-beings. I had no idea on meeting David that my stylist was leaving DC - fate has it! I decided to make an appointment. Result: a very happy client. The atmosphere and location are a big plus. The cut, skilled and affordable. The people, David of course included, respectful, confident, charitable (ask anyone). XYZ has a significant charitable mission. As a person in the service industry, it is so wonderful to find like-minded, giving professionals who do excellent work and then take their talents to a better cause than my hair! Bravo!
