Review from my drafts of May 2019, so take my review with a grain of salt as hopefully they have changed and hopefully the stylist I had no longer works there: My experience was cool but the result was just so not worth it. My review is pretty much identical to another person who got her hair silk pressed by the same stylist as me. The curls were non-existent as soon as I stepped out the salon even though she sprayed hair spray per my request. I didn't even really see the results until I saw it in my reflection in a window when I left. It looks like a blow out or how my hair might look if I leave it straight for a whole month. It is ridiculously dull looking. It feels like I have a whole head of fly aways. My grdauation is tomorrow, so this was *perfect* timing. I wouldn't be surprised if it's heat damaged (it wasn't thankfully, though I had to advocate for myself to have her put in heat protectant. She was a bit annoyed since she said she has a lot of exerience, but she did do it). Luckily, I was able to get it touched up by my sister. She commented that it didn't look like she straightened the roots in the back. If you happen to only see the reviews of your stylist while you're sitting in the chair like I did, I recommend making sure that you can see what they are doing - don't let them have you turned away from the mirror for long. I would have given 5 stars but the professionalism of the receptionist really bothered me. The quality of the service and the product (hair) were exceptional. When I first walked in I was greeted by the male receptionist who called me Shante, I politely told him the pronunciation of my name and she proceeded to say, "Shante is in the book". So just because Shante is in the book, you are going to continue to call me Shante. Umm NO. I had an appointment at 11 am with Kim, the salon owner Ms. Liz who assured I was going to be in great hands..BUT Kim never showed up. I was waiting until 11:30 after the male receptionist stated "he thought she was parking". After speaking with several stylists the receptionist decided to pass me along to another stylist. Phanatasia (spelling?) who is daughter of salon owner was friendly and excited to take on new clients. She asked me about my regime, hair, preferences and she was receptive to concerns. I have not been to a salon since I went natural about 3 years ago. I was no longer apprehensive but comforted about her knowledge and concern for me. I received a shampoo, deep conditioner, trim and a press and curl totaling about $70 which was amazing for my wallet! I tipped her about $25. 5 stars for Tammy, Styling Time, Prices and my Finished Style! Yall...I couldn't wait to write this review!!! I just moved to the area from Florida and desperately needed my hair done, but I am a hair snob and knew that I needed to do some research because there are 3 things that will make me give a stylist the stank eye: 1. Long wait times and over booking. I don't play that game. Especially using the hair dryer to try to disguise it. 2. Scissor happy stylists 3. Hair that I have to rewash or restyle when I get home. So I came on yelp and Tamara's(Tammy) name appeared a few times and the reviewers pictures looked stylish so I trusted them. My appointment was for 4:30, but I showed up at 4. Tammy started on me immediately. She suggested I needed a clean up/trim, she gave me tips on how to protect my ends with castor oil because I wear it in a bun after about a week when my hair gets flat, and she gave me a conditioner to soften my hair. Usually I like a good scrub when being shampooed, but my hair was clean and not itchy when finished so I was fine that she didn't really scrub it more. She also told me that pressing my hair plus going back curling it was killing my hair and that she only passes through once and curls it at the same time. I was thankful that she was so concerned about healthy hair because the smell of burnt hair in the salon initially scared me lol (it was from another stylist I think). She was finished in less than 1.5 hours and my hair looked freakin AMAZING!!! This was the best my hair has looked in a while and her styling skills + trim gave my hair style, body and movement. I just want to reiterate that I appreciate that she didn't over book and worked with speed because when I was about 15 minutes away from home it began to snow. If she would've had me there all night or even 30min longer, I would've been one of the cars on the news stuck on the roads with an 8hr drive home. Conclusion: Go to Tammy! read more

Went here on a friends recommendation. -Open on Sunday's (+) -Kendall was my stylist. He was super comfortable working with my hair. (My hair texture is naturally curly) I got a color and cut. This being my first time at this salon, he put all my concerns at ease. I felt like he really listened when we initially talked before he got started on my hair. (Which was another plus... Natural Motions is the epitomy of unprofessional behavior. They sit and gossip about staff and customers. The hair service is just as bad. Please dont get the quick weave from Kendall where he dries out your hair with gel, an undercap and breaking your hair with a rubber band. Like some of the other stylists, hair health is not a priority. However, I will say he knows how to style a weave although its at the expense of losing your hair. Don't waste your time getting a deep conditioner. Its a rip off because hair still looks dry and brittle. Also staff will lie to customers about quality of service. Ive witnessed a customer get a bad deep conditioner, and two stylist insisting her hair looks hydrated when it was dry and brittle. The poor girl was outnumbered so had to take their word. The tools look dirty and dusty at times. Many of the stylist will use the same comb that still has left over hair in it. I had to ask for them to sterlize it or something. The stylist seemed offended and rolled her eyes. Silly. I have had some positive experience with City another hairstylist. She is so sweet, listens and knows how to do hair. Lastly, the prices are a rip off especially when your hair is still damaged or more damaged due to improper treatment. Im so glad I dont have to go to Natural Motions. They are a hot mess. read more

I was extremely disappointed in the finally product. I've passed this salon many times over the years, and since becoming pregnant wanted to do something nice for myself and make my hair a bit more manageable, as I'm getting tired of dealing with it in it's natural state. I thought I did my due diligence in salon research, and was so excited to get a texturizer. Upon walking in I should've known this wasn't the place for me, but I went ahead anyway. I won't comment on the service cause that wasn't my issue, but upon telling the stylist what I was looking to achieve, pictures of how my hair used to be when I did this look in the past, an that was pregnant, she appeared to know what I as talking about and what she was doing. She texturized my hair and left it on for what seemed like 1-2 minutes. My hair basically came out looking the exact same way as when walked in, if not worse and it was a poofy mess, and felt crispy and greasy. I sa in my car and cried for 30 minutes before deciding to put my wig back on and go to my work event, where everyone as anticipating my big reveal. I could've done better myself, as I have in the past, and felt even worse about spending the amount of money I did for nothing and having my hair chopped off beyond what I asked. I've learned my lesson and wouldn't ever return and this has unfortunately left a bad taste about salons in the DMV. read more

I am truly disappointed in the service I received when I went to this salon the day before my wedding. I was looking for a braided updo, and one of the other stylists that I see from time to time for a press and curl recommended that I see "the best braider in the shop!" I took the braider's number and exchanged texts with her to set an appointment and review styles. When I came to the salon for my appointment, the braider decided that she would do a style for me to make me look "unique" on my wedding day, a traditional Ethiopian style. When she was done with my hair (see photo), I was in disbelief! It looked a HOT MESS, despite the other stylists in the salon (including the one who recommended her) trying to ease the situation by lying to me how good I looked. I was in shock and did not know what to do, so I paid and left the salon. MY MISTAKE! I went home and showed the style to my fiance. We both spent the next 1.5 hours trying to dismantle the braids, threads, and curly tracks. Luckily, I found another braider who agreed to let me come to her home that evening (after my wedding rehearsal!) so that she could fix my hair emergency. We were done just before midnight, and I was grateful. The next day, I called the Natural Motions braider, explained what I had to go through the day before to fix the hair disaster, and asked for a partial refund - to which she agreed. But then she refused to take any more of my calls or respond to my texts. This is no way to do business. read more

Natural motions has been a god sent for my hair care needs while in college. I felt the price was right and everyone walks out of that salon with their hair looking AMAZING! I (as well as every other black girl at my school) go to Shenee. This woman has a magic hand when it comes to the flat iron. Your hair will be bone straight with beautiful flips and will be flowing in the wind. I have no clue how she does it but I always get compliments. My hair is natural, but I like to straighten it from time and I've never gotten heat damage from a visit. While going to natural motions my hair has been the healthiest it's ever been. I came to natural motions with my hair damaged from my first relaxer, practically falling out with trashy ends. Shenee cut out the damage the first day I met her (which made me cry but I trusted her) but as I continued going to her for the next three years, my hair was revitalized and grew at unprecedented lengths. That being said, I would definitely trust any other stylist in this salon too. The atmosphere is very friendly and everyone really is committed to making you look your best AND caring for the hair. I think students may also get a discount, especially Georgetown and Howard. read more

I LOVE Natural Motion by Liz!!! This is a full-service salon, with a nail technician, pedicure station and even D'Brows eyebrow, waxing, spa upstairs. The space itself is beautiful, two levels of stylists. Everyone is super friendly and professional including the owner. This is one of the best salons I've ever been too (White or Black). The stylists are well trained, and have no hesitation sending you to another stylists' station if they are not confident they can successfully style your hair the way you are requesting. Unlike the previous reviewer I find their prices to be a BIG relief on my wallet, especially for the quality of work they turn out. I was tired of Dominican salons that burn your scalp and turn you out with a clean, straight, and often damaged head of hair that lacks style which is why I began visiting Natural Motion by Liz over a year ago. And I've gotten plenty of my friends to convert as well, after 1 visit. My stylist is Shenee, but all the stylists are good, from what I've seen. Time has never been an issue as I mostly come during the week. They do have an efficient system in place where the wash girls/guys prep (wash/color/braid before weave/relax) your hair, which allows the stylist to finish another client and speed your process along. Of course if you visit ANY salon on a Friday or Saturday there will be waiting time, I mean let's be realistic here people. I visited Natural Motions for about 2-3 years and tried 2 different stylists, and it only became progressively worse! These people do not respect you, or your time. They will speak rudely to you, behind your back, and overcharge for it. I'm a natural, and I experienced so much breakage over the years by Natural Motions' lack of highly trained hair professionals. They claim to care for natural hair, however it's a lie. They use cheap products and do not apply them properly. They are messy when shampooing, and your makeup will be ruined! Tammy. That's all you need to remember when you come here. She's professional, efficient and does my hair in one hour (unheard of). I'm down right persnickety about me hair. So if I'm raving about a stylist, believe me they're amazing. For the record, I've been natural 12 years, have 3b/c curls, ridiculously thick hair past my shoulders (and heading down my back thanks to Tammys touch). I started coming to her because the water here is so harsh on my hair. Okay okay and maybe I'm a bit more stressed than I used to be and I noticed my hair shedding...everywhere. Clearly my locks needed love and attention from a professional. I wanted my long mid back length hair back. I explained my goal to Tammy in July and in March it's not only grown several inches but the shedding has stopped and the areas that were stressed have rebounded 100%. Most importantly she doesn't break my piggy bank. The salon takes credit cards (winning!) And she's open on Sundays (usually with Dunkin donuts too). I had the pleasure of frequenting this shop biweekly while living in the DMV. Tammy was my stylist for about 2 years. After moving to VA from OH and trying out a number of local stylists, I was ISO someone who would prioritize healthy hair while giving me a trendy style. When I first started going to Tammy, I had short hair and she rocked out cute cuts for me that showcased my healthy hair. After having a baby, I wanted a sew in that was easy to maintain. Tammy gave me long beautiful tresses that didn't ruin my natural hair. One of her most respected qualities, is the great rapport she builds with her loyal clientele. Tammy genuinely cares about her clients and their hair. Now, she is not only a stylist but a friend as well. It is without reservation that I recommend Tammy for your hair care needs. She is someone that you can trust with your hair. As for the shop, it's a welcoming environment with stylists that have worked together so long that they're almost like family. I hate to write such a low review because the receptionist and all the stylists were so nice to me. Unfortunately, I do not know where to start. I guess I will start with the actual style of my hair. I have natural hair and wanted it cut and styled naturally. The stylist did seem knowledgeable of natural hair, so I requested a heart shape fro. My hair was cut significantly, more than anticipated, but my hair will grow back, right? That is what I am telling myself and praying to God up above. The products she used in my hair last night left my hair, in particular the ends, VERY KNOTTY and BRITTLE-y. My hair had no shine to it either. It felt like my hair was not even steamed and cut. :/ I went straight home to use my aloe vera juice/oil/conditioner/water mix to treat my ends and Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter to give my hair moisture. Honestly, I do not think the salon will give me a refund and I am unsure if they would restyle it with my hair products. On to the pricing, the receptionist told me a certain price on the phone and the beautician charged me double the amount. I should have asked the beautician the cost of everything before I let her touch my hair, so that we were on the same page. However, she was willing to take $15 dollars off the price. It was not a lot being taken off, since I paid $35 over the amount I thought I was going to initially pay. Thinking positively, it was something? Yes, it was and I politely accepted the deal. Would I go there again? That I can not say. Most likely, no. At least not for my natural hair. Unless, I brought all my products for the stylist to use. :( read more

I got a full install. I came from VA to purchase the hair from Natural Motion. I told the person who sold me the hair that I'd just purchased bad weave last month and I was really looking for quality hair this time. She assured me if I purchased the hair from Natural Motion I would be happy and I would be able to reuse it at least 3 times. I came in to have the weave installed which looked great for exactly one week. After which time the hair tangled up and shredded horribly. I was so shocked. Hello ladies, jus background on my hair...I have been natural now 3 years with some of the thickest hair ever. I have about 6 different curl patterns. Hair type 4a/b & shoulder length. And I have been frustrated with my nappys kinda what a relaxer possibly. I was a walked in with the intention to merely check prices/make an appointment. It was hella empty because of the snow. But I was greeted with a warm welcome. Phantasia was my stylist. She was extremely nice. She examined my hair and resumed me that my natural hair was perfect& that she understood my issues with doing my hair my own. She gave me a great deep condition, an OK trim, and blew out my hair. But i don't remember if she put a heat protector :-/ she did a great two-strand twist on my hair. Her shampoo skills were great!!! She was accommodating to my schedule rush. And let me come back to finish (that's how much hair I have lol) I gave them a 4 star bc my trim wasn't has good as I would have wanted. A day of time wasted & definitely my money was wasted. I spend way too much money on a hairstyle that did not turn out right. So many times I just wanted to get up and walk out. I arrived for my appointment on time but had to sit and wait for almost an hour before even getting a wash. Most of my time was spent being put under A dryer. I missed all my prior engagements due to time wasted here. If I could help anyone believe the majority of reviews that you read on places and always trust your gut feelings!! I was told by a fellow customer that if you call the main number to make an appointment, once you get the individual stylist's contact info, make sure to follow up with them to ensure they know you're on their book. I will be completely honest, I never had a experience like this before. I have been trying to find a salon that can be my home. I was looking for a salon since I moved here. I had high hopes for Natural Motions because of what I heard and looking at the reviews, I thought I could make this salon my home. I came in very excited and left highly disappointed. 1. The wash girl (Karen) destroyed my scalp. She was very rough with the wash and then on top of it tangled my hair. 2. When blow drying my hair, my hair was knotted. I have natural hair and my curls are very small and curly especially at the root. Karen did not care at all whether or not she was pulling my hair and it hurt really bad. 3. Tammy at first was rude. (She probably wasn't trying to be intentionally rude so I didn't take it personal) She tried to claim that I did not detangle my hair before I got there but I definitely did. I just put my hair in a bun just so that I won't walk around with my hair crazy especially in class and clinical. Afterwards, Tammy noticed that I was really sad and actually was nice about it. 4. It seem like no one wanted to provide me any service. I was going back and forth between Karen and Reese to do my hair when original I set the appointment with Tammy. 5. I walked in wanting just a simple blowout and left with a headache, tears, and some braids. Honestly, it was a very long wait. I got there at 12:33PM (Appointment was 12:30PM) and left at almost 9PM. I know my hair needed some work and I notified Tammy before I went to the salon. But at the end of it all, I was disrespected and humiliated. On top of it, Tammy left the salon and didn't even check to see if I was ok. I didn't even notice when she left. The only people who checked on me was Donna and Kendel. Reese, Donna, and Kendel were the only people who actually made my experience matter at the end. Will I ever go back? Honestly, I don't know. But I do want to warn everyone who is reading this, do not let Karen touch your head WHATSOEVER! If you make an appointment with a hairstylist stick to that person, if they don't start and complete your hair leave the salon. I should have spoken up but I honestly didn't want any drama. Like every young black girl I have my fair share of horror stories at Black salons: waiting 2+ hours when I have an appointment, dirty salon in unsafe neighborhood, having 3 inches of hair cut off when I asked for a "slight trim," relaxers left on too long/not long enough, horrible weave jobs, etc. So I was relieved to find Natural Motion's was a pleasant experience. Pluses --------- High end hair products, very clean salon, open on Sundays, extremely knowledgeable staff, accepts credit cards Minuses ----------- *NOT* metro accessible, quality/professionalism varies by stylist, overpriced ($95 for a touch up and roller set!), a lot of stylists tend to overbook Overall, a good salon. I had two appointments with Grier and won't be back. The first time I wasn't impressed by the length of time it took first of all but I needed it done after being out of state. Second time... showed up 30 mins late, double booked and had me sit under the dryer for 2 hours. A wash and flat iron shouldn't take 10am-130pm and then she charges me $10 extra. I called the day before and asked how much and she said $65. So taking your own tip while being late and sitting someone under the dryer for two hours, is extremely Unprofessional and completely ignorant to people's time. Well, I decided I wanted to get my hair cut and I was kind of nervous but I finally built up the courage and called this Salon after seeing a girl's hair I thought looked really good. I made my way there (on Metro :-). The Salon was clean; I felt it was kind of dim for a Salon but hey I guess it works for them. The stylist who served me was Grier and she was "The Bomb" or as some would refer to as " AMAZING"! She was nice and most of all SHE LISTENED to me when I asked her not to chop off all my hair on the top. Now, I don't know how she did it because my hair is very thick and for a lack of a better word it's nappy lol (no seriously) but she not only got my hair to lay down she got it shiny and for a second I thought I felt a wind go through it :-) Now I feel all sexy ;-) I feel like the pricing was fine too! I had a wonderful experience at the salon. I found them on Yelp and was able to get an appointment the same day (although a weekday, they do take walk-ins). My stylist was Princess. She was professional, knowledgeable and did a great job with my hair. I'm 7 weeks from my last perm and was experiencing shedding and dryness. She gave me hope to try going natural. I started going to this salon at the beginning of 2012. They hooked me up with Ebony and I love the job she does. I recently had to go to another lady in the salon because Ebony couldn't make it and she also did a good job. I have been natural for about 7 years and I get my hair pressed every 12 weeks to get a trim. I'm originally from Atlanta and people from there gave DC salons a bad reputation for doing natural hair. The prices are extremely high. They don't have professional tools such as curling irons, etc. I would not recommend this place at all. They didn't give me a good relaxer at all. $95 for a relaxer is highway robbery. read more
