While I would not call Stromboli's the most authentic of Italian establishments, I must take in consideration that I have rarely found very good Italian in the southeastern United States. The service here is friendly oh, but I would rate the food possibly at mediocre. I am still giving it four stars with the consideration that it has a Cool vibe and the food compared to other places in the south is not terrible. read more

Every college town has a pizza place that is unique to that town. Starkville is unique because it is a big SEC school in a small Southern town. Stromboli's is Mississippi State's "pizza place". The Pizza: It is a sweet golden crust that has a little crunch on the outside and warm delicate dough on the inside. The red sauce is awesome a lot of flavor without being overly spicy. The pepperoni is awesome. I wonder if they buy it from a food vendor or if they get it from a local butcher. Very tasty. The Place: It is a hole in the wall and I mean that in the most loving of ways! It is a small place with a small parking lot. I must say that I went a couple of times before I finally got in the door. I finally went during an MSU basketball game. When everyone else was at the game. It is a homey place with lots of memorabilia that ranges from 80s music icons to MSU swag. It had a lovely man cave quality. Like most of Starkville, everyone knows everyone...but I was treated like family even though I didn't know a soul in the place. Advice: Don't miss this place. Ok, so I'll admit it, my Brooklyn was ok. Could've used a smidge of sauce inside the actual Calzone. Sure glad I ordered another cup of sauce, should've been 2. Dough was tasty. But the real problem was my wife's = the Monday special = Pepperoni & Cheese Stromboli. Our order took quite a while for take out, like 30 min after ordering in person, but hey, it's COVID-19, let's support the businesses. We had been recommended to Stromboli's when we took our daughter down to Starkeville on a college tour (Hail State!), and we found it easily. Plenty of folks inside and a cool and original atmosphere inside and out. We are outside because our group size was 7, and there were plenty of seats outside, and a nice shady area. I think their signature piece is the sourdough crust, and it is superb. However, I think I'm their efforts to keep the dough soft they undercook the pizza and the calzones. My calzone was tasty but lacked the crispiness I look for on the outside. They say they give all credit card tips to mission trip, but I don't care if they do or don't, this place is good. I don't care for calzones but they have good dough so that makes them bearable. I really enjoyed the pizza, but here are some insights that may help. I asked for a side of the sauce since I am the kind of person who thinks that pizza is mainly a medium for getting the red stuff inside. I tried the sauce alone a few times with a cracker, the crust and on a spoon and I swear it has a touch of chili powder in it. Stick with me here, because this works. The crust is very light and reminded me a lot of a simple yeast roll. It is easy to pull apart and a touch sweet with what seemed like some sort of garlic butter brushed on it. This is where the sauce with that hint of chili powder taste comes in, because it diminishes the sweetness of the dough. The touch of spice is just enough to even out the sweetness of the dough. If that hadn't have done it the pepperoni would have taken care of it with its full flavor and welcome lack of grease. All in all it was a really solid pie in a comfortable college pizza joint atmosphere. I will be back. read more

Yes. Always say yes to Stromboli's! I visited Starkville this weekend from out of town, and this is my go to restaurant hands down. The pizza is amazing - a sweet puffed up crust and just the right amount of sauce. The calzones are also a good choice! I love the speciality options like the chicken ranchero or the fav. The service is always great even when they are packed! Seating is extremely limited - only about 10 or so tables, so it can be tricky to dine in during prime times. But on pretty days outdoor seating is a great option, and they run a special on one topping carry out pizzas. I highly suggest saving room for dessert so you can place an order of cookie dough bites! Cookie dough wrapped up in the sweet pizza dough drizzled with powdered sugar and a chocolate sauce for dipping purposes. Wow! Coming to Stromboli's is like coming home to Starkville. read more

A-OK in my book! After seeing great reviews and craving a calzone, I stopped in to make my own custom calzone with ricotta, meatballs, and sausage. The flavors of the meat and cheese are killer, and that sweet dough kind of reminds me of a pretzel in a way. Yum! I will say that they were not filled that much though (mostly dough)- usually I love calzones because they are mostly filling so I can eat half of one and have the rest for another meal. Because it was small, it's pretty much the size of half a typical calzone (with a lot of excess dough). I was really sad at the skimpy marinera serving size to dip my calzone in, and even more shocked to find that it was cold! Who wants cold sauce on their warm food?? Big no-no. I ended the meal with a cannoli, which was good despite the minimal chocolate chips in the filling and the Americanized addition of a Hershey's chocolate sauce drizzle. This is a fun local place. My sister brought me here after her college graduation. The facility is very small. 10 small tables, maybe. It is a fun atmosphere that you can tell locals really enjoy. The best thing we ate were the cookie dough bites! Past that the food is ok. The real star is their dough. I could have just eaten crust and been super happy. The pizza itself is ok. Not bad but not amazing either. The price may seem a little big for pizza but when you consider that they make the dough fresh, the price seem fair. Finally got a chance to experience all the hoopla. Disappointed aside from hanging out outside on a warm spring day. Had a veggie calzone. Advertised as calzone stuffed with 5 veggies of my choice and cheese. Pretty much a small cheese pizza folded over flat with basically nothing inside. The place is very, very tiny, which in some ways is endearing--but is also frustrating given the MASSIVE demand for seats and tables. Turnover is not very quick at all, which doesn't help. I'm not a huge fan of the pizza; there's nothing inherently wrong with it but the pizza sauce is VERY sweet, which is just not my style. The highlights are the ravioli, which can be overcooked but usually aren't, and the cookie dough bites. If for nothing else, go for those. Except once I found a long, black hair on mine. Short Version: Great food, sweet dough, sweet sauce, and plenty of cheese. Long version: We eat at Stromboli's almost every time we are in Starkville. My daughter is a student and this is one of her favorite places to eat. I've had the Stromboli, the Calzones, a few different pizzas, and the fried ravioli. Everything was tasty. They use a fairly sweet sauce, while I generally prefer a savory sauce, but it is still quite good. The basic Stromboli is a unique offering, it has a mixture of ground beef mixed with marinara, then pepperoni, and cheese. The beef mixture is a bit like a very thick beefy spaghetti sauce. The Stromboli on its own is a bit dry, but it is served with a container of marinara to dip it in. The sweet pizza dough on top rises a bit and is more bready than the crust on the edge of a pizza. The half is fairly large and the full Stromboli is a sufficient meal for all but the heartiest diner! The calzones are great. I've had the Old Main and the Boli Calzone. They are what you would expect from a calzone. They are stuffed full and very good. The ricotta cheese in the Old Main is a nice change from the usual calzone. Sauce for dipping is also available. One note here, my daughter ordered the Rotel Calzone and did not notice that it included jalapenos. This is tasty, but too spicy for some. It looked delicious to me, but her husband ate it! I intend to try this next time. The pizza is a very thin crust making this a bit of a "New York style" pizza. Over several different orders I've found the toppings and cheese plentiful. I prefer a bit more sauce on mine, but they also provide sauce for dipping. It has a very small dining room decorated with writing on the walls and the typical college dive feel. They do have a few tables outside in the front and a large covered patio with ceiling fans out back. So, the food is great, service is good unless they're packed which they frequently are, and it's not a fancy place. All I can say is that I will be back. Probably many times! read more
