Peppers Restaurant - Garlic Naan Perfection with excellent chutneys too

My newest food fixation is the Sesame Cauliflower from Peppers in Jamestown. I cannot stop thinking…read moreabout it. The perfectly cooked soft center, the crisp exterior, and the sticky ssssaaaaauce it's covered in... It's savory and heavy enough to be a meal but I was being generous and decided to share the appetizer with my spouse. They do offer a spice scale and they don't hold back. I foolishly tried the spice level 3 (out of 5 being the hottest) and should have chosen a 2 spice level. But the cauli was so good I fought through the pain. Worth it. I could have easily stopped there but we also ordered the garlic naan (also yessssss) as well as the Lamb Korma and Chicken Vindaloo. Both those entrees were delicious but the Korma really stood out to me. The rich and creamy sauce was very unique to my pallet and when I returned, I ordered the Chicken Korma. Clearly I love a good sauce. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, very spacious and would be great for groups or a romantic dinner for 2 (or 3 if you are into that sort of thing). The service was excellent and our server was patient when we ask questions about the menu. Fortunately, a lot of the dishes have descriptions on the menu so you have a good idea of what you are ordering. Looking forward to returning to Peppers again .... for the cauliflower... and the naan....

It…read moreis definitely my new favorite Indian restaurant, and even in my top 5 local restaurants in general! From the moment we walked in the door, the staff were kind, friendly, and attentive. We were seated immediately, and given time/space to look over the menu, but with our server still hovering nearby in case we had questions or were ready quickly. When we ordered, the server explained the 1-5 spice scale, gave recommendations, and even asked about allergies. After the food came out, he continued to check on us. This is definitely not one of those "abandoned in the corner and ignored" type of establishments. We started with an order of chili paneer, with spice level 2. It was perfectly crunchy and super flavorful. Level 2 has a nice kick to it if you sit for a minute between bites, but it doesn't necessarily light you up either. It is a great level if you're sharing something with someone a little more spice-hesitant. I love paneer, and this appetizer had a generous portion that could easily be a meal for 1 person. For my main, I got the Chana masala, spice level 3. This was absolutely delicious! Spicy, warm, flavorful. Chickpeas had the perfect texture -- not too hard nor too mushy. As a spicy food enjoyer, level 3 was a nice level that is hot and ~just~ starts to make my face flush, but isn't overpowering. A "conversational" level if you will. I could easily order this on a work lunch and could still eat with decorum. We also got garlic naan, which is always a hit, but done absolutely perfectly here. Pillowy, soft, fresh, and generous with the garlic.

The groups was hungry though and this caused many empty or near empty pans of food. And those with food were not hot. While the food was tasty, it would have been better if it was hot. I do enjoy their Sesame Chicken and get a little serving with each plate. The salad veggies were fresh and very tasty. I just wish they would turn up the heat on the various hot bars. Maybe next time I will try another Chinese restaurant.

The sushi also tasted old with the some of the rice crusty. I didn't see the usual sushi chef I was used to. A lot of the dishes I liked were hot but still tasted old. The second visit was at 2:30 and I expected some of the dishes to be old since it's an off hour. But it was worse than expected. Crusty sauces. Old and soggy fried foods. Just bad. Worse, the sushi was ancient. It had been made hours before and all the rice on the rolls hard. I would have enjoyed the nigiri, but he wasn't making any. The chef was just standing there looking around. I pointed out that helge plate was empty, but when I returned the plate was still empty. Every time I went here, about every other month, I always saw the same sushi chef and unbelievably he always remembered me. He kept all the sushi fresh and usually replaced stuff as fast as it was taken. Maybe I just missed him both of these times or maybe he no longer works there.

We started with the chargrilled patters - Smokey, herby, buttery, and insanely delicious. And the snow crab legs were perfectly seasoned and easy to crack. The salmon dinner was cooked to perfection - flaky, flavorful, and had the perfect crust. They bring out coleslaw and potatoes to eat while you wait on the rest and it's a perfect starter to the experience! A tasty little appetizer while you wait for the main event. The service is friendly and attentive, the vibe is open and beachy, making it perfect for a lunch or relaxed dinner. The inside seating is mostly bar seating, it does get packed, and does not take reservations. You can expect to wait if you come at dinner time but it's SO worth it.

The layout of the restaurant was interesting with large central bars. The menu is the star at this restaurant being a seafood lovers dream. Aw a walk in it took about 45 mins to get seated but with Adjacency to good local bars time flew past. The service you received was as good as could be expected with a busy bay. The shrimp cocktail was tasty but the shrimp are extremely small and only 6 so definitely not a shareable. I had the chargrilled oysters and they had great potential. All the flavors were there but they were left a bit too long to cook and half my order was burnt. The soup was phenomenal, as was the peel and eat shrimp. I would love to go back on a day that isn't as hectic and hope for better oyster. The potato salad did make up for a couple of the black shells.

While it's a relatively impressive looking storefront in a rundown and half empty shopping center, I have always had great experiences with the food. Items are prepared fast, fresh, and always taste great. From working here, I know that many of the items on the menu are made fresh in a house (eggrolls, chicken teriyaki appetizers, sauces, etc.) and you can tell from the fresh quality. Like many restaurants at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, China City closed their storefront and transitioned to a strictly takeout or delivery model. Granted, before that happened, it was extremely rare to see somebody dine in and there's has always really been a to-go establishment. I recall a time when there used to be a buffet, but it was never busy enough to maintain. Recently, they have reopened the storefront and put out a couple of tables for inside dining and you can actually walk inside to pick up your food from the counter again, and it's nice to have that interaction with the owners which has been missing for years! To get in line with modern times, it would be nice to have online ordering as an option, but I've never had difficulties placing a telephone order and the food is always prepared very quickly.

Within few minutes we. ordered and ended up waiting patiently. It took ~30 minutes for our order to arrive, one by one, but even at that time there weren't a lot of folks in the restaurant. And that surprised me that a restaurant with such nice ambiance & having a good name/reputation shouldn't be taking this much time on a Saturday evening. Food wasn't that bad, but not as good as I was expecting. I've had Chicken Karahi all over the world and came here after one of my friends told me that their karahi was good. I'll be honest: I wasn't! Charsi Tikka was good but a bit undercooked. Butter Chicken was good though. After we were done with our dinner, we had to wait for at least 15 minutes to have someone come to us and give us the boxes to take left over food. Even after that, no one came to check if we need anything or how we do have to pay. To summarize: experience was not as bad as it sounds like. But the owners must step up, be there by providing excellent customer service rather than relying everything on their staff. There wasn't even a manager who I could talk to - as it seems everyone was either taking orders or do stuff all around. Same folks were on the counter to get payments & serve drinks at the bar. I wish customer service becomes a priority, and with good ambience and sitting arrangement, they ensure food quality is also improved.
