This is a surprisingly large store given what it looks like when approaching from the street! Parking can be a little tight, but if you read the signage, you can see there is a little more available to one side of the store, in addition to the front parking that can be seen from the street. It covers the bases of what you'd expect to see in a garden center: plants and more plants, pots/containers, soil/sand/etc, and a lot of extremely fun decorative items, including wind chimes, fountains, gnomes, and more. There were also two cats roaming around the store, which were fun to see. There is so much to look at, both inside the store and out in the back garden area. It's a great selection. The staff was friendly and efficient - it's a busy time of year for gardening, of course! But they kept everyone moving and assisted. Large purchases of items like soil were sent around the side with vehicle, and they loaded it up for you. read more

This place has a great selection! I love the huge greenhouse full of houseplants. Almost any plant you could want can be found here, for a reasonable price. I'm an avid plant lover and I always enjoy browsing to find cool pots and plants to add to my collection. While I didn't end up getting any plants at Strader's, they do have a pretty big assortment of pots at extremely reasonable prices. They are basically arranged by color and the organization helps narrow your search down a bit based on what you're looking for. They also have sales every now and then on pots, which makes them even cheaper! I'll definitely continue to shop at Strader's and whenever I end of grabbing a plant I'll be sure to share with the Yelpiverse! read more

I am a little obsessed with this store. Their selection of house plants, and fairy garden plants is fantastic. I bought ten different highly unique small plants for $3 each. I also bought three cacti for three dollars each. They had a huge selection of succulents, and I ended up buying one that looked like lace--so pretty! Out of the 15 plants I bought, one died but it may have been a lighting or water issue, since all the others are doing really well. They had a nice selection of pots, both ceramic and plastic, that were fairly reasonably priced. I purchased a small pretty green pot for around $7. They also had a lot of figurines and pot hangers for your pots and fairy gardens. There was also a cat lurking about. On a return trip, I bought a tree for my office. I will say their selection of larger house plants was more limited than their other house plants. The staff was helpful when I asked about whether the tree would survive in my windowless office. They even repotted the plant for me and took it to my car. The tree is looking fantastic, not a brown leaf in sight. They had a large selection of outdoor plants. I wasn't in the market for outdoor plants being an apartment dweller, but I couldn't resist buying a pepper plant for my balcony (it had two tiny peppers on it!). Not a bad impulse buy for $2. My mother thought their prices were a little high compared to Home Depot or other stores, but I thought the prices were worth it for the large selection of unique plants. read more

This is a fun urban garden store that packs a lot in a small place. The houseplants selection is fantastic and looks super healthy. The staff is knowledgeable and really helpful. They will even pot your plants! There a cat who roams the store which is so cute. It's pretty nice to have a store so close in town and not have to go to one of the big nurseries to pick up plants. The only downside in that they parking can be tricky on a busy day. read more

I walked up to Straders a few minutes after they had closed this evening and needed a few small pumpkins for my children's school project. I ran into someone walking out the door who worked there on and he told me they had closed but he said let me see if we can help you. They opened the store, helped me by getting a cart, booted up the registers again and even allowed me to have a few free mums with my purchase. It is rare for someone to go out of their way and stay a couple extra minutes to help someone out. Three workers stayed and helped me. I can not be more grateful for their kindness. I seriously had such a great experience at this Strader's garden location today! I first called them to see if they carried the specific product I was looking for and they went totally out of their way to go back and check for me to save me from making an extra trip. The items I got were bulky so they provided me with a box for easy carrying. They have an adorable garden cat that hangs out at the shop all day, as well as a dog that comes to visit! Their prices are totally unbeatable and the shop is very well organized. If you are looking for anything that could even be remotely garden or outdoor related, this is your place. read more

This is a fairly pleasant but small location. But the plant selection is limited and the parking is even more limited. I almost got boxed into my parking space in the parking lot. I had a great experience here! I have no idea what to do when it comes to gardening, but there were multiple people to help me figure it out at Straders. I'm solely trying to grow veggies in pots and they helped to pick out the right seeds, containers, and soil to do this. They even carried the soil to the car for me so I wouldn't get dirty (and asked if I wanted plastic to protect my car from the dirt!). I love this location for 2 reasons: 1. I'm lazy and it is super close to me. 2. The staff is extremely helpful, kind, and knowledgeable. It is quite small so it isn't as overwhelming like the Lowe's Garden Center and given that I know nothing about plants- just wanted something low maintenance that looked pretty- they were able to successfully find my match. Opening the front door to Strader's Garden Center, which enters through the greenhouse section, I felt as though I'd stepped into a mythical jungle garden out of some book. Fountains gurgled as fairies sat coolly gazing into the pools and mermaids dipped their tales in them. Gnomes peeked out from behind spider plants. Gargoyles surveyed their land from atop shelves. Leaving my land of fantasy, I crossed the threshold into the main room and was immediately greeted by, first a human, then a calico cat named Jinx. The first thing I noticed was wind chimes gracing the front windows. Some of the wind chimes were made up of circular translucent shells. The brand of these shell wind chimes, as was many other gift items in the store, was New Creative and is out of Milford, Ohio. There was a huge Christmas sale going on of 50% off trees, ornaments and décor. Artificial Christmas trees were inside, while real ones were out back. Ornaments, which were also New Creative, were cheap priced even before the sale price. All of your possible gardening needs and wants (like décor) could be found, some lower priced, others perhaps about typical priced. Vegetable and flower seeds were available anywhere from $1.50 to $3.69, but most were under $2.00. Birdfeeders and birdhouses adorned shelves on the side walls. In the back could be found gardening books by Better Homes and Gardens, Ortho's, and individual authors. Strader's also has lots of pottery to put the many herbs and flowers they sell in. Organic items are also a popular selling thing, especially at the one in Grandview. Strader's has been around for about 50 years and was started by the Strader family, who are still quite active in their stores. The Grandview location was the first and there are now about six stores throughout Columbus. Mr. Strader is often at the main store on Riverside Drive, but he makes weekly visits to all of his stores. Near the checkout counter is a community board for your perusal while waiting in line. On the board are lists of activities, news and hopes of photos of what customers have done in their gardens with the items they bought. Living at the Grandview Strader's is Jinx and her brother Sam, both of whom belongs to the store manager, Andrea Maynard. Jinx and Sam are not allowed out the front door, though, and there are signs asking this. I am interested in seeing how everything changes once they're done with inventory, like everyone else at this time of year, and have brought in their spring stock, which hopefully should be within the next month or so. read more

I have ALWAYS gone to Strader's for all of our landscaping needs. We have many properties around Columbus and it was always a great place to go for one stop shopping. However, today I went to the King Avenue location and encountered a horribly unhappy woman at her job. She seemed unhappy that she had to answer any questions. Also, I overheard her say to someone, " I don't go to the grocery store and ask the butcher how to cook the food in my cart, do I?". Wow!!! I didn't catch her name but she's an older woman with a ponytail and glasses. A word of advice... Stay away from her!!! A tip for Strader's headquarters... Fire her! read more

Other reviews here are fairly polarized, and sadly my experience was a very negative one. My coworker and I were having an enjoyable time shopping and planning our purchases, and managed to ignore some apparent argument between employees during the trip. However, we did have a very strange exchange with an employee that approached us and all but scared us out of the store. I'm still scratching my head over the matter. I've never had a remotely similar experience, and came here to see if it was a reoccurring problem. I'd love to revisit the shop but it's hard to ignore the bad taste left in my mouth. read more

Customer service training is a need starting with managers and working the way down I'd love to be the trainer. So sad there so many so disrespectful in retail and customer service. The women that worked here were really helpful. I enjoyed the experience until I got to the register and the poor girl had a nosebleed. She was clearly in pain and asked the man working near her to help her use the register and he simply replied "I won't" as her nose was bleeding!! I was honestly baffled at how rude he was to her. I often drop by this store as it caters to the community of Upper Arlington as a convenient offshoot of the larger store on Riverside. Outside of the lawn products and accessories, the store, staff and service are underwhelming. With regard to the "super" store on Riverside, the product is good/not excellent. However, it is the overall lack of customer service that has consistently driven me to the always superior experience of Oakland Nursery. An additional 3-5 minute drive will provide you with excellent product, superior and above your expectation, customer service. The general attitude of the skilled and experienced staff at Straders is that of grumpy, burned out, resigned and afflicted individuals. It is as if they are selling the last of the earth's water and you are blessed to have the opportunity to purchase same. It is past time for the owner's to interject into their culture the fresh, whimsical and contentment sense that flowers and plants bring to all! Right now, all that is being cultivated at Straders is complacency and deterioration in staff and product. read more

Staff including the manager have been very helpful with not only informing me on what plants are best in what kind of areas, but what would work well in my specific garden space. And the prices are very affordable. My only complaint would be the parking (very limited). I would definitely recommend this Strader's and am in fact returning today for more plants!! read more

This place is massive. If you can't find your gardening needs/wants here . . . . they don't exist. Only complaint - we visited on a Friday around 5:00. The place was staffed with college-aged kids. Not great for asking advice on plants. I'm a semi-seasoned planter yet I have lots of questions. If you know what you want, it's a great place. Huge selection and well maintained and staffed. Just not enough knowledgeable staff available on site for my needs. I'll be looking for a smaller establishment for questions and advice. read more

Very unhappy that the fennel and dill I bought at the Riverside location was apparently soaked in insecticide. Used it to feed my butterfly caterpillars and they are dying from it. Since this is a food item sold for human consumption a warning label would have been nice. read more

We are new gardeners and needed some assistance in finding the right soil. The employees were less than enthusiastic about assisting us and couldn't get away from us fast enough. When we reached check out the girl at the counter looked and sounded annoyed that she had to ring us out instead of talking to one of the other employees. Horrible customer service! I walked in at 12:55 pm and walked out at 12:58 pm.. I went to ask Straders employee for help, however he abruptly walked in front of me , ignored me and then told a second employee to order twine.. neither employee offered me help.. In this day and age customer service is a lost art form and Straders seems to care less about a customer and care more about placing an order!! I will not be returning.. My wife and I are avid gardeners and have (4) main suppliers we go to for our plants (Oakland, Straders, Selly's and Bakers, we also patronize numerous other retailers). We have noticed recently a HUGE decline in the management of the Straders on 33. Today was the last straw. A week or so ago I purchased a new lawn mower and found the staff (except in the service dept.) totally unfamiliar with there stock (quantity, function, etc.) and left with the mower but only after tracking down the service man. Today though I found the depth of the management barrel. We purchased (2) Hybiscus that had a sign in front of them that they we on sale for $12.50 ea, all of the +/-200 plants in the area were marked $19.99. The pots had stickers noting the plants as 'multicolor hybiscus' as the description. When we got to the car, after loading the all of plants my wife noticed that we had been over charged for the hybiscus ($19.99 ea). She went back in to address the mistake and found the sign had been removed. She spoke to 'the manager (Sunday, 4/19/15 @ approx. 4:30pm) a short women with neck length wavey dark hair (whom we did not get her name) she was told that the sign was in the wrong place. Further she said those plants were 'hardy hybiscus' and the sale was for 'tropical hybiscus'. My wife raised the issue of the plants not being marked as either. The manager then informed that the plants were $19.99, she wasn't going to sell them for $12.50 and that if that wasn't sufficient then bring them back. OK, I'm sorry in this day and age 'customer service' and 'customer relations' is about all any retailer really has to offer. The money was not the point ($14+). To be generally 'abrupt', 'ill tempered' and 'RUDE' is un excusable. We enjoy gardening chose who we spend our money with. Even though we may spend $1000-2000 a year (annuals, perinnials and equipment) and may not be 'big spender' I don't appreciate such a cavalier attitude. The manager is right, we could have just taken the plants back, but, I have a better idea. I'll just stop purchasing my plants with Strader's. Instead I choose to purchase from Oakland Park Nursery, Selly's or Bakers, who both offer as good of plants/prices. In fact I feel that in the current competitive climate, it's just better to stop purchasing at Strader's all together. It's much nicer to go to a retailer that actually acts like they 'want' your business and money. I'm glad to see Strader's profits are so high that they no longer feel customer service is a requirement to be a good retailer. My $165 early spring purchase is the last one you'll see from me. Believe, I plan in also spreading the word, hopefully you'll get the point. If not, you'll just be another soul in the retail bone yard. WHAT A MAROON!!! read more

I never write into these things but after my visit to Strader's on Wednesday afternoon I am so appalled I needed to write. First off, I have been a customer of Strader's for almost five years and have found it very helpful with stocking my personal garden as well as managing the small but profitable landscaping business I own. Wednesday my mother and I visited Strader's to exchange two begonias purchased at Straders which had basically died within a week. Mind you these were two ten dollar plants and all we wanted was an exchange. What transpired in the next 20 minutes shocked both of us as we were escorted to a back corner of the planting section when an extremely rude woman told us she could not help us as she would be violating their return policy.I also explained that as usual we woulf be purchasing a few new items as well as exchanging the plants. The woman then became ballistic as she shouted for the third time that this was not their policy and if we did not care to "obey:(her words not mine) their policy we were free to leave the premises. Now I don't spend a fortune in this store but I would guess I average about $500-600 a year between Spring planting and their Christmas items. The woman has seen me in the store a multitude of times. I am planning to persue this issue as it was such a simple problem that could have been taken care of within five minutes. As we left, my mother asked me if I thought perhaps we were on that show that films people after pranking them in their store; that's how bad it was. So sad in this day and age a business would not care about a loyal and usually quite satisfied customer. read more
