Love what they have here. It looks bigger from the outside. Friendly staff willing to help. The reason I'm giving this two stars is because of the prices. $5.00 plants was a bit much. I spent just over $75. I really thought their prices would have been just a little better. This was my first time here and again loved their selections but the prices were a bit too high for me so because of this I won't be coming back. I've always been a big Strader's fan because of the amazing variety and fair pricing. This Strader's is quite big, but I felt like it still didn't have the biggest selection of pots & plants. They do have pretty much anything you could need, and I think the pricing is pretty fair, and sometimes on the cheaper end. I love all my plants from here and they do very well. I will be forever grateful to the staff here at this location of Strader's. My sister and I were on the hunt for a specific flower. My grandmother's favorite flower, a white amaryllis. She passed away and my mom couldn't find one in her hometown so we went on the hunt. After calling around to many nurseries in Columbus, the folks here answered and made our day. They had one and shared that it was in full bloom, tall as can be and absolutely beautiful. They offered to save it for us so we rushed over to pick it up. The staff had set it aside for us and once we saw it, it felt like it was meant to be. The universe was looking out for us. The flower was about $25 and they didn't exaggerate on the description. It was breathtaking. We browsed the rest of the nursery and were impressed at the large selection of indoor plants they offered. They also have a ton of pottery to choose from. It was hard for me to avoid taking a new pot home (I'm a bit of a collector). The staff here went above and beyond and I can't thank them enough. This flower was placed on my grandmother's casket and gave my entire family a reason to smile on such a difficult day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. read more

I want to register a complaint. We went to Riverside Drive Straders yesterday to buy 4 Barberry plants and mulch. We put the last four they had on our cart. The sign in front of the bushes said $39.99 (they only had one red barberry choice and the picture was on the sign also), but they were $49.99 on the containers. At the counter, they rang up 49.99 and I showed them the sign stating $39.99. The manager was not nice and said the sign must've been moved around. Clearly it hadn't since that's the only red barberry they had. She would not honor the $39.99 on the sign, so we left and bought ours at Oakland Park for $29.99. My husband and I will not go back to Strader's and they lost a good customer/sale. They should've honored the price on the sign. Very poor business! read more

I could not find a product to adjust soil pH. It seemed like something they might sell. I know Home Depot has related products. I just wish they had people to help. I wandered around for 15 minutes, searching and hoping for some assistance without luck and finally gave up and left. I've had similar experiences in the past. They may be conveniently located for me, but I doubt I'll be back. read more

I visit Straders a couple of times a year for indoor and outdoor plant purchases. They have a decent selection and I like that if you buy mulch, you pay inside then drive around back and have it loaded dire try into your trunk. The greenhouses can get busy, especially during spring and summer weekends, but are very large. They seem to have a large staff, but the staff are usually watering, restocking, or cashing customers out, so you're generally on your own to find plants and appropriate pots. I've definitely walked the greenhouses multiple times before I've been able to either find the plant I want or get pointed the right direction. That said, they have generally healthy plants at decent prices with a good selection of indoor and outdoor pots. read more

Straders is my happy place. The collection is amazing, especially in peak season. I will honestly go there if I need a boost in my spirit because plants make me really happy. I found everything I needed for my garden, and I'm excited to see them grow. I like that they have a section that is more or less native plants in their first greenhouse off the right of the entrance, although it's not labeled as such. I think the one thing I'd like to see more of is know-how and knowledge on plant identification and companion planting. A lot of things are still labeled "houseplant" or "foliage" and it would be an even more valuable experience if I could confer with a staff member or team who is well versed in the plants they sell. Straders management- consider staff-wide introductory courses in horticulture! Imagine the increased customer satisfaction and loyalty you could experience! Happy customers generally means = happy profit margins. All in all, still one of my favorite garden shops. I come in with a lot of my own research and experiential know how and that usually guides me to the right choices. Also, Google is a pal when you're stuck! read more

Honestly, there's a lot of stuff here! Landscaping stuff, bird feeder, plants, etc. Tbh I found a lot of the trendy plants. They're much smaller, so they were cheaper. That means they'll be harder to care for since they're still growing til maturity. I found a small monstera deliciosa and string of raindrops. Wow! My friends found small palm trees, a small bonsai, and more! Can't wait to come back! read more

We initially stopped into check out the Christmas tree selection. They still had several varieties available from which to select in a nice range of sizes and prices. The trees are kept off in the greenhouse to one side, and a friendly staff person approached us and made some fun Christmas-themed chat with the kid before offering assistance. Once we had the tree selected, they took care of the tree and sent us with the tag to the register and said pull the car around when ready, and they'd load it up. While there we also checked out the store, which offered plenty of holiday themed greenery, including wreaths and other decorative pieces. There is also a wide selection of artificial trees (including a white one that looked like a snowman!), plus ornaments, indoor/outdoor decorations, and treetoppers. The kid is a plant lover so we also ended up in the Houseplants section, which had a good selection divided up into sections based on how much light each type of plant needs. We ended up with a Hoya Kerrii heart shape (very cute). There is also a good selection of pots, ranging from arty to traditional to amusing (loved the ones with legs!). There are also traditional gardening supplies, plus some fun pet items like socks and ornaments with different breeds of cats and dogs on them. There is a good sized parking lot available. read more

Bought some garlic to plant this morning and later in the day when I finally had time to plant it- opened it up and it was all moldy. Called the store just to exchange it- it was $8.00- lady on the phone was super rude. Since I only bought soil and a bulb of garlic I threw out my receipt as I walked out of their door. They won't even do an exchange without a receipt. Spent over $130.00 here earlier this week but that will be the last time. read more

I stopped by today (late fall) to see if they had any plants I was interested in getting into the ground before winter. When I walked in their north green house, they had several plants for sale and a sign next to the berry plants that announced a fall sale and said 50% off. Some of the plants were a little hit, but this is typical when it is the end of the season and places may do a sale to unload inventory, so I suspected nothing other than what was advertised. To clarify, I approached a floor person and they said that they thought the sale was over and that greenhouse was just being used for storage. (This wasn't true because I have been in that greenhouse many times buying plants in the past.) I didn't want to address initially because I had another obligation I had to leave for and I suspicioned this might take awhile due to confusion. While heading to the other obligation, I called and asked for a manager to clarify because it didn't sound right. I talked to someone who took down my name and said they would call me back. No one called. I stopped in and asked for a manager on my way back from the other obligation (at this point still not upset) because I just wanted to clarify what was going on, b/c I was interested in some plants, and judging by the look of a few, they needed some attention. The manager wouldn't even come out to answer any questions. They had another employee come up and said she was the one who could help me. She said I could in fact buy the plants (as they were marked for sale and apparently the greenhouse wasn't just being used for storage), yet I knew she wasn't the manager I requested b/c she had to go to the back office to ask if the sale still applied. After being told the sale didn't apply, even though there were no dates and the sign said fall sale (and it is still fall), I let the employee know there was a sign right next to the plants advertising the sale. She dismissed me in a way and essentially told me just because there was a sign doesn't mean there was a sale. (What?) She then called someone on the walkie to remove the sign. Shame on that manager and the lady he used for cover for not handling correctly in any fashion, and for not having the professionalism to do their job and interface professionally with a customer who has legitimate questions for clarification. I was even told by the last employee that customers don't go out there at one point, which I know is false (and why would they have plants with price tags still on them and special sale signs next to them) unless I ran into the only garden center/nursery I have been to that doesn't want to sell plants. Pathetic customer service on multiple fronts! I work in management and have managers that work for me. Sad to see somewhere I used to love to go to handle this so poorly. Went to this Straders yesterday. Had a terrible experience. Went in at quarter till close to hopefully grab a plant for a gift. Walked in was greeted with only "girls we close in ten minutes" no hello or anything. Went out to the outdoor area to ask for a suggestion from an employee and we seemed to annoy her that we'd even ask. She was not engaging or helpful but both of us left the conversation choosing to go an alternate route. Left in under five minutes. Went out to the parking lot and were talking outside our car on where we should go next. At 6:03 an employee came out and clapped to get our attention and said they closed and we needed to get off the premises so they could close the gate. Meanwhile there were about 10 employees cars in the parking lot and only one gate remained open. All in all will not be returning to Straders. Service was unwelcoming and rude all the way around. read more

Stopped in here on the way home from an appointment in the Mill Run area. I had some extra time on my hands and wanted to stop in here to see what plants were available. The store was quiet for an early afternoon on a Saturday, which was different, but that's ok. I quickly found the area of houseplants and looked to see what they had. I always look around at everything before I decide on what plant(s) I want to buy. They always have a good selection. Prices are reasonable. read more

After writing a 5 star review for Strader's great selection, I'm sorry to demote them to 1 star. Of the 14 boxwoods we bought (close to $2k!), zero survived after a year, whereas plants of the same type planted nearby (from Oakland) did fine. Despite doing everything to save the ones from Strader's (and getting professional advice too), we had to rip them all out and replace. Strader's gave $0 towards new plants and came up with a ridiculous, evolving set of excuses for not standing behind their product. What a waste of time and money. If you're looking for cheap annuals, Strader's might be OK, but if you're putting in the time and money for perennials, I wouldn't risk going to Strader's. There are better choices. read more

I am an unpaid intern. I bought a hibiscus plant for $30 as a special treat two weeks ago. I posted how Straders was heaven on earth. I also bought a flat of inpatients reimbursed by my condo association, that also died. I have a green thumb. The clerk told me to keep the hibiscus in the pot. Come to find out, it was root bound and sick. I tried to return. The clerk was ugly and said no chance of a refund even if I had the receipt. Stick with Home Depot. I will not be back. I also asked for blooming perennials and catnip and the clerk said they didn't have those. People there hate customer service. I bought catnip seeds and they have yet to sprout. It's a weed for gods sake. read more

This place knows how to run a business because they have excellent customer service. We bought a Japanese maple (red dragon) in the early summer that did well in the summer and fall, but eventually died over winter. We waited for it to bloom in the spring but it never did. Brought it back approximately 1 year after we purchased it and Jared found a comparable maple (tamukeyama) to replace ours with. This place definitely has our business for years to come. read more

I was looking for houseplants, and they seem to have a great variety. However, I found mealy bugs on more than one plant while there. I recommend checking your plant thoroughly before purchasing and isolate when you get home until you're sure there are no bugs. read more

I've disliked this store for some time (lazy and unfriendly help, long check out lines) but this has put me over the top. This was my first experience at Strader's and I can't imagine that I'll be returning anytime soon. In the midst of the COVID 19 quarantine coming to a close, I was eager to get a snake plant for our condo. While they had a decent selection, it took a bit to locate them. Once I found the perfect choice, I needed some help regarding replanting. This is where the experience heads south. The first staff I saw was on the phone, so I asked someone else who told me it was their first day & redirected me back to the person who has on the phone (and clearly wanted to be left alone). I explained that in not a green thumb and had questions about appropriate planter size and soil. She glanced at what I showed her and said "that's too big & soil is over there" & walked off as quickly as she could. Far from welcoming or helpful. Not wanting to push it, I grabbed another planter and headed to check out. The cashier was the best part of my experience. She gave great insight on planters & waited while I got one that she recommended. She was so pleasant and helpful & I'm glad I didn't walk out prior. read more

I wish I were able to give the Straders on Riverside Drive negative -5 stars. I will never go back and I will never go to any other Straders locations. This year for Christmas my sister gave me a $25 gift certificate to Straders. Woo Hoo! I went to use my Gift receipt December 26th. (Side note: customers can purchase a straders gift card on the Straders website. Instead of sending out an actual gift card, the purchaser is supposed to print the reciept and give it to the person in place of Straders sending out an actual card. This detail is explained VERY CLEARLY right on the Straders website beside where one goes to purchase gift cards) I eagerly looked through the plant selection, picked 2 baby cacti, cactus soil and 4 little clay pots with clay water plates and took everything up to the register. The cashier rang me up, I presented my printed Gift receipt, she tried to cash me out a couple times and for some reason couldn't get the transaction to go through. The cashier then called the manager for help. The manager who literally looks like she just rolled out of bed, comes up to the counter, looks at the gift receipt,tells the cashier to punch in some numbers, doesn't even bother going to the register to try to get the transaction to go through herself. The cashier is still having trouble and the manager excuses herself and goes to the back. At this point it's 10 min til close, we wait for the manager to come back up , she appears at 7:04 and says, "this is something new we're doing and I don't know how to complete the transaction". "Here is the Straders customer service email, contact them". The closing manager did nothing to help the situation, fed me a line of bull, passed the buck to customer service email all because she was clearly ready to leave for the day. I wasn't understanding how this gift card purchase off their website was any different than any other gift cards they get any other day which is a common occurance these days with ANY and ALL businesses? The ONLY difference was, I had a printed gift receipt so Straders didn't have to send out a plastic gift card.. There is nothing new going on there, as far as I can see? If you're the closing manager you should be able to handle ANY and ALL situations at the nursery- in the greenhouse or the register. Instead, I was told there was nothing she could do (or "nothing she WOULD do") to help me. I had to leave without my purchase and come back again or email customer service. So Straders has my sisters money but nobody knows what to do with a $25 gift receipt. I left w/o my purchase. I spoke w my sister, explained the situation, my sister called and spoke to 2 or 3 people with zero help. Finally, after a week of my sister calling their store, she finally spoke w Julie and julie told my sister to have me come back up, ask for her and we'd be good to go. That evening, I went up to the Straders Riverside location, Penny was the evening manager on duty, I asked to speak w julie and was informed Julie went home sick. I proceeded to explain the situation to Penny, showed her my gift receipt and waited for the go ahead to go and find what I tried to purchase the week prior. Instead,Penny acts as if she's never seen ANYTHING like my gift receipt, because they use "gift cards" she says. Once again,I explain my sister spoke w Julie, my sister purchased the gift receipt on the Straders website and I pointed out how the Straders name was alll over the gift receipt/paperwork, showing a card transaction was done, showing last 4 digits of the card number as well as that the transaction was in the amount of $25. Finally, with a roll of the eye, she walked over to the cashier and told her to write my transaction off as a donation when I came back up w my $25 purchase. I said,"wait, this isn't a write off or donation, my sister paid for this gift receipt & his was the gift receipt which printed off and was given in place of an actual gift card". (At any time any of the employees or managers could've gone to the Straders website where it says EVERYTHING in BIG GREEN LETTERS) Instead, I'm being embarrassed treated as if I were a thief, coming up there w a fake $25 gift receipt , a week after Christmas to rip their store off. I have to say, I have never been treated so ridiculously in my entire life. I am a 45 year old woman, w a $25 gift receipt, trying to enjoy my Christmas gift. This is my 2nd time trying to make my purchase, this visit I was told by Julie another manager to come on up with no problems & everything would be worked out. Instead, Penny the 2nd rude, clueless manager who doesn't know how to do her job, straight up accuses me of breaking the law, forging a $25 gift receipt that she now has to instruct the cashier to key in as a "donation". Unfortunately, this situation is STILL NOT resolved , I even left out some of the story because ive already written a book here. What a total let down, embarassing, infuriating situation. Columbus, Ohio, is a weird place. It's the state capital, and it's surrounded by farmland, but the selection of indoor/outdoor plants is pretty limited. No matter where you go, it's always the same thing and not much of it. I've lived in different places, and I've not experienced anything as limited as here. And the condition is usually fair to poor, as though they unpack the plants and then don't do much to keep them alive. More than once, we've taken plants home only to find them diseased or infested (we always wash them carefully) or just withering no matter how much care we give. But with the prices, you'd think you were getting the cream of the crop. So, it's not really a matter of selection when shopping for plants here -- there's not that much -- but price and quality. Strader's is on the more pricey side, though no more than its major competitor here, Oakland Nurseries. For houseplants, Strader's is a little better than Oakland, though they'd both get a C+ or B- for quality. For outdoor plants, it's about the same. Where Strader's does a better job is on all the paraphernalia. If you want a weedwhacker or bird cage or some kind of seeds, they probably have it. In fact, when you walk in this store, the first thing you're hit with is that chemical grass seed smell, like in a feed store. At Christmas, they have an okay selection of trees and decorations -- nothing particularly charming, but then Columbus is like that, too. Where Strader's falls down -- and often falls down hard -- is in the quality of customer service. Each time I go in, it seems like there are different people working there, and most are rude or obnoxious. I guess if you're a pretty young girl, you can count on getting immediate service -- that seems true throughout Columbus -- but if you're anybody else, good luck. That's not to say there aren't some nice people at this Strader's. There are. But it's hit or miss finding them, and usually miss. But since their prices aren't cheap, they should be providing Cadillac and not Chevrolet service. It's not clear if it's high turnover -- customer service in Columbus in general is lacking -- or some weird fantasy the employees have that they are somehow a premier provider when the building looks like a former K Mart from circa 1960. But there are some serious attitude issues. read more

The last time I was there, a cashier with long stringy hair refusing an additional bag as "it was policy". My wife has problems with back and needs lighter bags I stopped this week and was greeted by a smiling long haired brunette, then asked what I was looking for and directions to the green house. I was pleased to find the plants I wanted and more pleased after she gave me more suggestions and asked if I needed the correct dirt. At checkout she was very outgoing until the stringy haired woman tried to tell her she was doing something wrong then chastised her being too slow and wasting our time. The cashier completed the transaction quickly, with a smile. If this is the new Straders I will be coming back!! read more

My experience with at this Strader's first started out with a call to them. I called and asked if they had lemon trees. They put me on hold, then come back and tell me that they do. I asked how much they were. The lady I was talking to said rudely and sarcastically, "Well, I don't know. We have to walk all the way to the back of the store again to find. Do you still want to know the price?" If they would have used common sense, they should have checked it in the first place. I said that I would like to know the price. She deeply sighed and said, "Ugh, hold on." Next, I came into the store. Not sure why I chose to do so since she was so rude on the phone. I was going to ask a worker a question, but she was already talking to another customer, so I politely waited until they were done talking. I was standing next to them, and once the other customer walked away, she didn't even look at me or greet me. She just ignored me until I said something to her first. Then, I went to walk up to two guys to ask them for help, they looked at me, and walked away as I was walking toward them. Terrible customer service. You would think that employees would be willing to help at a place like a garden center, where people are bound to have plenty of questions. I'm all about supporting local businesses, but this was ridiculous. I felt embarrassed to have questions, because no one was willing to help. I loved the atmosphere and feel of the place, but after my experiences with them, I'd rather go to big corporate stores like Walmart or Lowe's if it means I'd get better service and help. read more

I have been going to Strader's at the location on and off for a few years now. My usual go when Oakland nursery is out of something or I want to see if they have something that Oakland Nursery might not have. Each time I go there the staff is usually very rude and not very helpful. A couple times ago when I went my son and I both bought plants and the plants had white bugs on them. I quickly took care of the plant and nursed both plants back to health. I've never had this problem at Lowes or Home Depot. And I certainly did not have a problem at Oakland Nursery. The last time I went was it for me. Ruth staff and when I asked about a plant that didn't have a name label in it the lady said she didn't know what it was but the person who would was on the other side of the store. I can go find that person. Like I'm supposed to know what that person looks like? Then she said why don't you just download the app take a picture of it and look it up on your phone. She can tin you to turn around and shoot the breeze with another employee. I literally got the one thing that I went there for since Oakland Nursery was out of stock.Then I left the store. At this point the only time I will go there is what I'm desperate for horticulture charcoal or something that I really need that Oakland Nursery does not have at the moment. Most of my plant questions are not difficult or challenging ones. It wouldn't take an expert or a horticulturalist to answer them. read more

One of the employees was rude and singled me out today about not wearing a mask. I put the mask on right away to be respectful. Once I put on my mask, I started to look around... There were over a dozen customers within my view that were not wearing a mask. Then the kicker of was, there was several employees working and not wearing their mask. This morning I went to the Riverside Straders. Since I am a senior citizen I am in the "at risk" group during this COVID pandemic I am very cautious. I typically order just online and have purchases put in my trunk. This service is not available here. As I walked in the store several associates were wiping off carts and wagons so they would be clean. I thanked them for their great job. I rarely write negative reviews. I believe in being respectful, positive, and kind. I went in the store and wanted to know where I could find vincas so I could get "in and out" very quickly. I was shocked when the female associate working in the greenhouse (with an accent) was NOT wearing a mask. This is not a slight to her because she had an accent. It is so she can be identified! I am also foreign-born. I bought flowers, spending over $150.and went to check out, I am a good customer. Everyone in the line of about 18 people was wearing a mask and was socially distanced. Nice to see! When I was finally ready to be checked out at register #3 the older female associate was training a new worker (wearing a mask). The main associate was not. It was around her neck -- certainly not how one should be worn. While my purchase was underway I remarked that I was disappointed neither she nor the greenhouse associate were wearing masks. She then told me, "It is not required by Governor DeWine." I nicely and calmly told her that I knew it was not required, but that it was the "right thing to do for safety." She then tried to "educate" me by telling me that someone with asthma can't wear a mask. It could hurt them because they then couldn't breathe. As a retired high school science educator I always told my students to do the right thing. i now always wear a mask not for myself, but for the safety of others. As a left the store I wanted to again thank the workers for their kindness wiping off the shopping carts. There was now not a single person there -- and all the wagons were haphazardly scattered outside with no one cleaning! I will never again shop at any Straders Garden Center. I recommend all to stay away! Go to Oakland. They even give a senior discount and have a bigger and better selection. It is patently obvious some of the associates don't care about the safety and health of customers and even try to justify poor behavior! Yes, masks may not be REQUIRED, but Governor DeWine stated they should be part of the safety protocol for all retail stores. That includes garden centers. I will contact all my friends and acquaintances and tell them to avoid Straders. I am extremely disappointed in the terrible attitude I experienced about safety protocols in this challenging time. I went to Straders on Riverside today. It is not a safe place right now. Most employees did not have masks on and many customers were not wearing masks. One entrance and long checkout lines were restricting safe distance entrance and exit. Stay away - other garden centers are more compliant. read more
