We drove over to The Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill, in Duluth. Because we have been there several times before, we knew we would face bad traffic and we did - bumper to bumper. But ,it was worth it. When we arrived, the parking lot was also packed so when we entered, we had a small wait. But soon, we were seated and we were given EXCELLENT service and given much attention. I had their meatloaf and mushrooms with a side of salad and mashed potatoes and my friend had their filet, also with a side of salad and mashed potatoes. Be sure to see the picture of the bread they bring out to you. It's the size of doughnut holes and SO gooey. I loved it so much that I asked for more to take home with me. If you will look at the picture I included of the bill (before tip) you can decide if it is worth the price but between the ambience of the restaurant, the flavor of the food and the attentive service, I felt that it was very much worth what we paid. I'm sad. This place used to be the cream of the crop. It was a go to spot for a special occasion. I was excited that we chose to make the 40 min drive here to celebrate my sister's birthday. We arrived at 7:15 on Sunday night. I was immediately shocked at how empty the parking lot was. It used to be packed on weekends. We were seated immediately. We started with an order of steak egg rolls. I did not enjoy. It felt like these are made to utilize scraps and maximize revenue. The meat had an old taste and had quite a bit of gristle and fat. I had the lobster bisque. It was TERRIBLE. It was so very bitter and the amidst the very small amount of lobster garnish was shell in every bite. I sent it back. We ordered steaks with a few different sides. Of the four steaks ordered, one was cooked to almost the correct. The others were literally raw. We sent them back to be cooked more. Came out still undercooked. When we said it still needed more, he was argumentative about how the steak was ordered. He blamed the server saying she entered the temperature as med rare. When the steak came the third time, the server said she did it correctly. They were pointing fingers at each other and felt it was overall unprofessional. I brought 2/3 of my steak home and never even ate the leftovers. We spent 400+ on this meal and no one enjoyed their food. We all agreed we would have enjoyed a steak at Longhorn (10 min from us all) more than we enjoyed this. After 2+ hours, and multiple issues, not type of adjustments were made. I think it's safe to say that Stoney River can be added to the growing list of failing restaurants. Restaurants that were once great but have traded in quality to make more money. read more

After two separate family birthday visits, I'm disappointed that Stoney River isn't going to make it into my regular rotation. While the food is really good, and the service is friendly (if a little clumsy), there are altogether too many mix-ups happening between front of house and kitchen, steaks not cooked to order, and too long a wait between wrong food brought, and right food brought to replace it. It's definitely a place in need of better staff training. Hopefully they'll be able to up their game and let the service live up to the level of food. read more

It was our anniversary so we were contemplating where to go for lunch/dinner. A friend of ours suggested Stoney River. It was my husband's first time here, so he didn't really know what to expect. I have been here twice and I've always had a great experience. When we arrived between 12 and 12:30, the parking lot was not full, but traffic was steady. As we walked in we were greeted and escorted to our seats. I do apologize for not remembering our waiter's name but he was very nice and attentive. He asked what the occasion was and I said it's our 22nd anniversary. He stated we would get a cake (2 slices of carrot cake) or some other dessert I can't remember. We chose the carrot cake and so happy we did. It was delicious. 2 large slices that honestly could have been shared by 2 additional people. We ordered Spinach dip for the appetizer. For our entrée, Bistro chicken. It comes with 2 large thinly sliced chicken breasts covered in Parmesan cheese, lemon caper sauce, and garlic whipped potatoes. The chicken was tender and juicy. I could have used more lemon capers sauce but it was perfect! The ambience was very cozy as the fireplace was lit. The lights were dimmed. Christmas decor on the tables and entryways. We were casually dressed - a blazer and jeans. Others were dressed as such Oh let me not forget the biscuits with strawberry jam and butter were out of this world! They're known for their hot buttery biscuits. Instead of a loaf of bread, you get biscuits (3) and if you want more it's available. We came for my Mom's birthday. My parents have been living in the area and wanted to try this place really bad! The ambiance was like a typical steakhouse vibe; classy and simple. The service was excellent, from the hosts to the waiters and waitresses. All the food was delicious. My drinks were good too and pretty strong. My Mom also enjoyed the desserts. This particular location is great. We always have good service. But the stars of this restaurant are: tuna tartare (one of the best we had at a great price) and the one and only ribeye cowboy cut! The best $50 spend on a steak! And I've tried so many steaks from all the fancy restaurants and no one beats this one. Stoney River is a great place for date night dinner. This restaurant has many options in each category: sides, mains, drinks, and desserts. The restaurant is located on the corner of a busy street corner that houses a Target, Hobby Lobby, Publix, and Home Depot - just to name a few. The interior screams "upscale," and the bar area is located directly in the epicenter which gives the restaurant amazing lighting and a different feel than other dinner spots. My husband and I were here for date night on this particular visit, and when I say this place fills you up.. it FILLS YOU UP! We were able to take home leftovers for just about three days. We each ordered a side salad which was HUGE. Honestly, I was filled up in the middle of eating my side Caesar, prior to my dinner. We each ordered the meatloaf which came with two sides (au gratin potatoes - we each ordered this, creamed spinach, and Gouda Mac and cheese). The sides here are WONDERFUL. The Gouda Mac and cheese is quite cheesy, and as someone who is lactose intolerant (and should NOT have cheese), I still do. I came here for my mom's birthday and it's a solid traditional steakhouse with good flavors and portions, prices seemed pretty on par with this kind of restaurant, around $40-60 per steak entree which comes with a side. It's a very indulgent place, and I did think that everything was quite heavy and salty so be prepared to just work slowly through your food. The complimentary biscuits are yummy but salty, very buttery, and come with butter and a berry compote looking sauce. My favorite things were the lobster bisque and french onion soup, parmesan fries, and NY strip. The coffee cured steak I was a little disappointed in as it seemed very over seasoned and salty. Overall, I thought the experience was nice but food too heavy. I'm not sure if I would come back unless it was with someone who really wanted the American steakhouse experience. read more

My husband and I ended up at Stoney River tonight after another restaurant refused us service because my husband was wearing sandals. It was our anniversary and one of our vehicles had been rear ended and we arrived frazzled and trying to salvage our celebration. Not only was the food excellent but the staff were all extremely warm and friendly from the time we walked through the doors. They even brought us complementary glasses of champagne and a generous slice of their delicious chocolate ganache cake. I loved the fire in the fireplace and the elegant but comfortable booths. I brought my wife and children here to celebrate an anniversary. The outside waiting area was comfortable, and the landscaping was serene. The staff seated us in a reasonable amount of time, within 15 minutes, after making reservations online less than an hour before. The inside atmosphere was fine. Honestly, I expected the interior to match the exterior. The flooring and decorations feel 20 years behind, especially the flat green carpet. I expected white tablecloths (did they used to have tablecloths?), but the wooden table and booths were comfortable. Our service, specifically, could have been better. Our waitress greeted us and took the drink orders. I ordered a beer, and the waitress returned with our waters and took our dinner orders. It was about 15 minutes until our salads/appetizers arrived and I assumed she forgot the beer. I was going to mention it to her when she came to check on us, but by the time she made her way to our table again the steaks had arrived. She popped back in and sort of apologized that it was taking a long time for the beer, that they had to open a new case. The manager brought the beer and poured it for me. That was a nice move. I hadn't complained or expressed frustration really, so it was proper for them to be ahead of any discontent. Now for the food! Our orders were: Cheeseburger with fries - $20 Steak Biscuits with fries - $26 Center Cut Filet Mignon with Au Gratin Potatoes - $53 + Caesar salad - $10 New York Strip with Au Gratin Potatoes - $49 + House salad - $10 Bread Rolls - complimentary Without a doubt, the bread was the most satisfying portion of the meal. That stands true for the rolls as well as the biscuits. The texture and flavor of the biscuits screams "home-made" (bonus on the meal price also). The rolls have a sweetness that is well paired with the slightly sweet butter provided. The salad was easy to appreciate. At my request the server provided balsamic vinegar and oil. The vegetables had a fresh feel. The salad was a large portion and I wanted to take some home, but, again, the server hadn't checked on us in time to box it up before the steak arrived. The filet mignon was OK. My first impression was that there was far too much salt used. My preference is to have a combinational flavor inherent in the meat with an appropriate amount of seasoning, but the salt overtook the flavor of the steak. I think deficiencies in quality can be masked with salt and so I typically associate highly salted food with lower quality. I requested medium-rare, and the steak was slightly overcooked to my liking as the center was only slightly pink. The edges were very gray with a grainy texture. There was a fine amount of fat content in the mignon. The next day I ate the remainder of the steak cold, and it was smooth enough to slice through and rarer on that part. It was satisfying as a small lunch. The Au Gratin potatoes were very tasty. They appeared to be made with fresh ingredients, melted cheese, herbs and spices, and potatoes. They were a bit too salty, but further into the dish the salt wasn't as strong. My kids loved the cheeseburger, steak biscuits, and fries. The price point on those menu items is great for families that want to have the steakhouse experience. Overall, the service was below expectation. At one point we were talking about sharing waters because the server had not been by to fill the glass. This was not the case for every table though, as the table behind us had an exceptional server that was checking on the party every 3-5 minutes. In fairness, our server had a full section. The steak did not really meet my expectations for the price. The quality was there, but the salt was a turn-off for me personally. The vegetables were great, fresh. The rolls and biscuits were the best I have ever tasted at a restaurant. The server brought complimentary 1/4 glasses of prosecco with the check for my wife and I to honor our anniversary. I may try Stoney River again, but most likely the Roswell location. read more

They also have dinner rolls that you must try! A restaurant that I used to love called Fatz used to have this kind of bread. So I was excited to see that Stoney River also serves this bread as well. We dined here last night, we had eight in our party, and arrived at 8:00 PM, I appreciated that we had a large round table that didn't feel crowded, our service was excellent. the food and cocktails were beyond our expectations.It was easy to carry a conversation with having to raise our voices. the only issue was that the gratuity was added to the bill and we felt that it wasn't enough for the service we received, that was easily remedied with an additional cash tip. This is our fist time to visit this beautiful place. It is a higher end steak house that is full of history. There is a beautiful stone fireplace and a big bar on the middle. The bathroom is clean and fresh towels. When we arrived, we were quickly checked in shortly there after we were seated. Our server is fabulous. Ryann is a Fantastic server! She is very patient, professional and quick to get what we needed. Uh, the steak. Filet with crab is cooked perfectly; it is to die for. Lastnight was our first time at this restaurant. My husband made reservations, we were seated within 8-10mins. When we got seated we had to wait about 10-12 minutes to be waited on. Our waiter got switched 3 times but our last waiter Meghan was amazing. She was very apologetic for our waiting and switching of waiters. Our appetizers & entrees came quickly though. The food was all good. Our appetizers were covered due to our wait which we appreciated. We were too full for dessert but Megan surprised us with a chocolate cake to go. It's really a testament that this place has been around for over a decade. It's really great!!! ***FOOD: DEVILED EGGS - very good appetizer and at $9 that's really good; TUNA STACK $18 - was good and had a zip; CABIN FILLET w/LOBSTER MAC - absolutely delicious and right portions $42; HK BLACK SEA BASS - utterly divine. Fish was cooked perfectly with crisp on top, the sauce was delicious over the rice and spinach. Just perfect meal; NY STRIP - cooked perfectly and seasoned very well. Nicely done. Creme brûlée - WOW Good. $12 dessert, largest creme brûlée I've seen, very shareable plate was amazing. ***COST (OUT OF 4$) $$$ I suppose it's relative now. 9yrs ago I said it was expensive but NOW looking at the prices it seems reasonable to spend $45 on a steak. All the prices seem very reasonable. ***DÉCOR: it's been 9yrs since I came here the first time. Nothing has changed inside the interior. AND, it's still a date night or celebration place. Bar is in the center of the place and every seat was taken by couples presumably on a date it looks like. ***SERVICE: server was good and attentive always filling our water. Food came out fast and hot, steaming hot in fact. The only issue was we had ordered wine to go with the steak at the time we ordered all our drinks initially. We asked a couple of times for the wine and the server said the bar was slammed. We ate through basically 1/2 our steak before we got our wine. Now it could be our server wasn't of age to serve us the wine and so had to wait for someone else. We have noticed at several restaurants that even though we order the wine when we order our meal either the server forgets to bring it with our meal or it comes much later after we have either eaten most or all of our meal. Service was quick and efficiently although I think the waitress could've cleared the table (empty plates/dishes) more often as we were running out of space. Since I'm a vegan, out of my entire party, I had to get creative with the side dishes (sautéed spinach, plain fries, seasonal vegetable--carrots, and asparagus). Luckily after I notified the waitress of my dietary restrictions, she was more than helpful to note this for the chef/cook when putting my order in. I really appreciate her helpfulness. Stoney River has been one of our favorite Places to eat. However on June 30th we went there with our son and daughter-in-law to celebrate our 63rd anniversary. I have never been so disappointed in a meal in my life. All four meals were disappointing in flavor, toughness, cold, and basically inedible. I paid the $200 tab and we left, never to return. The menu has a variety of options. The deviled eggs, steak and biscuits and sea bass were excellent. The portion sizes out match the price. I was looking forward to our night here. We made reservations ahead of time. The place was packed but we were seated on time. Basically we were there for 3 hours! Service was so slow. I can understand the staff shortages but every part of our order: drinks, appetizers, taking orders for the meal, just took forever to come out. They really lost extra drink sales because we would have ordered a second round. Most disappointing was two of our steaks were over cooked and dry. We had waited so long for the entree to come out that we didn't want to wait again for them to recook, but we did get half off our dinner and free dessert as compensation On top of that our waitress seemed to be having a bad night. She was very uncaring and moved at her own pace like she had given up trying to keep up with the night.
