Stonewall's is overall a pretty average barbecue restaurant, however, the smoked sausage is quite good. The workers are always nice and the service is usually quick but not quicker than you would expect from a barbecue restaurant. The dining room is typically pretty dead and dull inside at dinner time but I'm sure it's busy at lunch and I know they cater a lot too. The only reason I give it four stars is because the bread pudding is absolutely amazing and a local staple in its own right. I have gone a few times and have went out of my way several times to get there bake potato. It's a giant baked potato stuffed with pulled pork and shredded cheddar and comes with butter, sour cream, and stuff on the side. It is so simple but ummmm my mouth is watering thinking about it and after this review I am driving 45 min down the interstate to get me one. I find myself in the most unexpected places at times. Why was I in this area? Who knows. I'm just really glad I was close to Stonewall's BBQ. Stonewall's is a fairly conventional counter-service barbecue spot, but it's small enough to avoid the quality control issues that chains like City Barbecue often face. As far as I know, this is currently the only Stonewall's BBQ location. This time, I had to keep my meal on the smaller side, so I ordered half a smoked chicken with no sides. At under $10, this is what a reasonably affordable, healthy meal looks like nowadays. I can't say the chicken was the best I've tasted, nor was the barbecue sauce exceptional. But what sets Stonewall's apart is the quality of the service. Yes, even counter-service restaurants can distinguish themselves through great service. The young lady behind the counter was fantastic at connecting with customers, going beyond merely taking orders. Even though this isn't a sit-down restaurant, and she wasn't required to check in, she still asked if I was enjoying my meal. Honestly, I've had servers at full-service restaurants who don't even bother to check in. Stonewall's interior has the rustic charm you expect from a traditional barbecue place, but what makes it stand out is the cleanliness. I've grown somewhat used to sticky sauce bottles, but here, they clearly understand that these bottles need frequent wiping throughout the day. While the food didn't blow me away, it was still very good. The friendly service and clean sauce bottles make me want to return to try more menu items. While this seems like the bare minimum, most restaurants I've tried recently don't even get this right. read more

I work at a restaurant nearby and just saw this and thought I'd give it a try. I was looking for something tasty and didn't want fast food so pulled in and took a look. Neat place, clean, order and everything is to go but can eat in as well. Was in a rush so just got a 1/2 chicken, , potato casserole and beans and several sauces to try. I like spicy so I got a few and the service was fantastic, food came out quick, and I dove in sitting in my car. I didn't get the chicken wet so I doused it with spicy barbecue after putting on my gloves lol , ( it works great and I wear them all day anyway, ) and this was really good! The potatoes hit the spot and beans were good- but should have got greens , but all was good and hit the spot. Headed into Braselton for a joint I havnt had the opportunity to try yet. Very nice interior with some great decor. The lady who took our order was super nice. Got brunswick stew a pulled pork sandwhich coleslaw topped and their potato salad. Definitely the best brunswick stew in the area. Just barely beats the black pig and the rest of em. Barbecue however was on the sweeter side. I like vinegar based sauces, but this sauce to me was a little too sweet for my likings. However, it wasn't bad for a tomato based sauce. We stopped by after going to Athens for the day. We had the three meat combo with Mac and cheese and Brunswick stew. The brisket and ribs were great! Very moist and tender and tasty! However, the pulled pork was a disappointment. It was too dry and had a sweet taste not a pork taste. Also, like another reviewer mentioned before me there is only one sauce so another one or two is needed. The Brunswick stew was good luckily it wasn't the Lima bean soup variety. Stopped here on the way to Atlanta from Charlotte. Real easy access off I-85. The Brisket was on point, cut thinly and had lots of good smoke flavor. The Ribs were cooked perfectly, very moist with a good sweet taste, probably because they leave the silver skin on which protects the meat while keeping those fatty juices in. I normaly take off the silverskin, but can appreciate it on sometimes. No smoky flavor in the Ribs or the Pulled Pork, but definitely good BBQ (seasoned well and taste was great). The sauce was good, but not needed (a bit more tart then I normally make it). Don't miss side is the Cheesy Potato, that was a masterpiece. I showed up at 12:30 p.m. on a Thursday only to find them closed. There was a sign in the windows stating that they would be closed due to a catering gig. That's kind of messed up I think, to close the restaurant during regular posted business hours to do a catering gig. read more

I had the 2-meat, 2 side meal, with smoked turkey (ah-maz-ing), brisket (good, a little dry and fatty), green beans (nothing special), and baked beans (they tasted overly-sweet and saucy, just like the pulled pork that my date had.) He had 3-meat meal with smoked chicken (SO dry), brisket (same), and pulled pork (pre-sauced with what I guess is their "1994 award-winning BBQ sauce" advertised on the wall), cheesy potato casserole (not great, clumpy and too cheesy) and green beans. My biggest surprise was that they only had the one BBQ sauce offering on the table and not several varieties. While I'm always happy to splash Texas Pete all over everything, I want to have regional, different flavor choices of BBQ sauces when I eat meats/chickens. Theirs was just sweet and artificial tasting, which disappointed me because I'd like to have the option of sampling different sauces, either mustard-based, or spicier. I would go back alone for 1+ pounds of the smoked turkey just to bring home and turn into a meal with my own fixins. The turkey was just so moist and wonderful. I wasn't aware that they don't serve beer, but the nice gals behind the counter said that you're allowed to BYOB. First visit to this BBQ joint. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal & had to take part of it home. The brisket had a good flavor & was so tender it fell apart in my mouth. Baked beans were good & although the Brunswick stew was not the best I have had, it was good enough for me to want to come back for another visit. The sweet tea was perfect--just like southern sweet tea should be. Plus, they had lemonade so I made an Arnold Palmer. Sweet!!! They had the fans on & I think maybe the AC also since it was a warm day. But we came for dinner & the sun was down & so was the temperature so we were a little cold. We probably should have said something, but didn't. I forgot to take a photo before I started eating, but I did get a photo of their "pay it forward" wall. What a lovely idea. The wall was very full so wondering if more people are paying it forward than are actually using the free meal. Even so, it is so nice to see that there are still people who are kind enough to purchase a meal for a stranger. Stonewalls has been a hit in my family since they opened on the corner. Their cheesy potato casserole usually comes home by the pint! They have such fast, efficient and kind staff that never lets us leave without a smile. The service is truthfully so impeccable. They also have a pay it forward zone, in which was used on my cousin and I one time when we were short a few dollars, our whole meal was paid for by management and we were even given a sweet treat too ! Usually they have bones (their waste) set out to take home for your fur babies too ! Tried a local BBQ place, mind you we owned a 4/5 star BBQ place in chicago, and was disappointed. I'm giving it 2/5 stars because I liked only 2/5 of my meal. The place is rustic and smelled pretty good. Ordered the brisket plate with cole slaw and sweet potato casserole. Warning comes in a foam to go container dining in. The brisket was cut thin and had the full fat cap. So 1/2 of my protein was fat. There's only one sauce and if you don't like it you are SOL. I didn't like the sauce. The cole slaw was ok, sweet potatoes were very good like dessert. My hubby had the pork and sausage, with Mac &cheese and beans. The Mac & cheese inedible. Overcooked and coagulated. It sat for a while. The beans were ok. Pork looked like dog food. Overcooked and dry. So pulverized it was indistinguishable. Sausage was ok but salty and agin the sauce ruined it. The thing about many barbecue places is that most of their work takes place earlier so when I came in today, my sliced brisket sandwich only took a few moments to put together. And because it smelled so good, I forgot to take a picture of it before it was all gone. Bummer, because it was nice and tender and moist. A very small bit of the table sauce is all it took. The mac & cheese and cole slaw were also quite good. Stonewall's is so close to the Interstate and a short drive outside the Atlanta perimeter. In the days of this virus, we have been trying to stay safe but have to continue business in order to survive. We take proper precautions and we have been proactively ordering food from locally owned restaurants that we want to stay in business, knowing they may be struggling with the impacts of the virus. We will not be going back to this restaurant ever. We've eaten here on many occasions, whenever business brings us in to town Tuesday-Saturday. Five months into a global pandemic, this restaurant is choosing not to follow CDC guidelines. I walked in and not one employee had a mask on... even the ones serving the food. A bottle of hand sanitizer near the register was the only thing I saw. On basic principle, I will no longer dine here. Blatant disrespect for their patrons. You wear a mask to protect others, not to protect yourself. No wonder there was no one else in the restaurant on a Friday night. Their BBQ is fast casual quality bbq ... mediocre at best. The restaurant: The atmosphere is very "small BBQ joint" with the usual miscellaneous signs and such on the walls. It was clean and looked ok. They have benches etc. The Staff: The staff was congenial and willing to work with what you want. They were pleasant but not overly solicitous. For the food: The brisket was ok, not bad, but not something I will skip going to a closer BBQ place to get, and the same could be said of the ribs. The smoked sausage was excellent and it was one of the few items I would be willing to go out of my way to get. The green beans were ridiculously bland. They simply tasted like they had all the flavor boiled out and nothing added. The kids lived the bread pudding. Again, I thought it was fairly mediocre, not bad, but again, not something I would go out of my way to get. Overall, my last comment sums it up. Hate to say it but the sampler platter just did not cut it last week. Pork was dry and possibly a day old - brisket was just ok, which is a shame cuz I love brisket. Here's your red flag of any restaurant, folks. When you walk in and they are bragging about being "Award Winning BBQ" on multiple hung signs over their order station, their to-go boxes, menus, etc. - they are begging for you to like their food. Come on Stonewalls, just serve good BBQ, mmmkay? I actually have looked at every page of their website to see what awards they won, and I couldn't find them. I digress for a moment and move on with the review. Stonewall's is a chain of 6 restaurants located across MS (Poplarsville, Mississippi is where they started in 1995, according to their website) Louisiana, and this one in GA. The reviews on this place so far don't make any sense to me, so we 'gonna break it on down for ya' here. I travel all over eating BBQ and so my reviews are based on a very broad scope of styles of BBQ, so don't think that I'm just a style snob please commin in with my 2 star. First off, I really did almost have a love at first bite, because I ordered the half rib and started eating from the 'middle' and boy that first bite was darn near a 4.5 star. But, 30% of the rib easily was charred and the consistency of beef jerky - overall score of the rib, 3 stars, since it ranged from bite to bite a 4.5 to 2. Secondly I ordered a half chicken, and the chicken was fairly juicy but the marinade (or just sauce) that they cook it in is WAY too sweet and gives off a weird hint flavor to the chicken. 3 stars for the chicken. The brisket is about the worst brisket I've had, it was thin sliced (fine) but don't thin slice it if it's dry, folks. It's like eating bacon. It also is not a lean brisket, but more fatty - 1.5 stars on the brisket. The sauce, to me, was glorified ketchup. I don't feel it affects my overall rating too much because good BBQ should not require sauce, but, if you are only going to have one sauce, make it a little inventive. The cole slaw is more minced lettuce, I did like that, I'm on a 4 star - but I'm not sure it resounded as 'homemade' to me if you are concerned with that. The mac and cheese I took a couple bites but never connected, 2 star. The customer service here isn't terrible. The girl was nice, but when I asked her if they smoke their beans (because I'm not a fan of beans unless they are smoked) and she almost looked at me like I was insane. Folks, there are places that smoke their beans and even a guy like me that doesn't like beans, suddenly likes beans. The interior of the place is well lit and clean. To respond to the reviews that think this isn't BBQ because they couldn't find a smoker that lit their fancy... well tough @#$%. News flash some places smoke their meats off site to protect the process, and I've seen, even at this, a lot of places that will even put a fake smoker outside just to draw you in, and their ribs were not half bad at all. None of that affects my rating here - just the fact that even though I could tell the meats were smoked, they didn't completely deliver a greater than average experience. read more
